For me it worked better when I used whole sentences to ask, and it could even make lesson-plans and presentations.

It uses similar underlying technologies (a language model) as ChatGPT. It can understand context, and it can generate creative outputs, just like ChatGPT can.
I'd say just try feeding whatever prompt you feel like, and see what comes out of it.

From what I understand it essentially does a web search for whatever you enter, and uses the information in the results in its response in whatever way is most appropriate for the answer - so it has both creative capabilities and search engine capabilities

I have a question.

  1. Is Perplexity its own artificial intelligence model? Or does it use OpenAI's GPT model?
  2. can Perplexity read entire PDFs? For example, papers with more than 100 pages.
dense kraken
#

People say Perplexity is based on OpenAI's GPT3.5 Turbo. Asking Perplexity "who is your developer" also gives a response that names OpenAI. However, Perplexity does add stuff on top of the model, such as giving the model relevant search results alongside your prompt.
Perplexity cannot read your local PDF files. However, if a PDF is publicly available on the internet, you can give it the URL of that PDF (eg, ask "summarize [URL to pdf]"), or use the Chrome extension when viewing the pdf in a browser tab. (note that academic papers might be locked behind a login, which might affect whether Perplexity can access it.)

#

I Might be looking at the wrong paper lol

signal imp
#

Yup that's the one. To get a sense of how it can work with other systems, here is how the integration of Wolfram Alpha looks like with ChatGPT: https://writings.stephenwolfram.com/2023/03/chatgpt-gets-its-wolfram-superpowers/

#

And actually Perplexity and Bing are doing a similar thing. Basically telling the LLM "hey, if you need more info, do a search by putting something like search:foo in the reply" and then the search result and context is sent back into the LLM

#

GPT3.5 can do it with a little more hand-holding (like showing a couple of explicit examples in the original prompt) while GPT4 it can infer more by a description of the tag needed for the tool without explicit examples

plain slate
signal imp
#

Still a lot of work to do on the "I don't know" reply lol.

plain slate
#

Biggest limitation I have hit with it is the text input limit when converting large texts to different styles (helping a mate with a D&D write up and another with a server based on an open source game engine)
Not much factual stuff needed for that but weirdly fun

#

Have heard the text limit (which is the token limit I believe?) Has increased in gpt4

signal imp
#

Yeah.. the default is 8k or so and can ask for access to the 32k one

plain slate
#

I think the ultimate goal should be removing the limit fully, though I do not know enough of the inner workings to know how feasible that is.....and I am guessing that makes it less and less likely to be able to run locally

#

Tried a few "chatgpt local alternatives" and the responses have been amusing at best.

#

I still find it hard to wrap my head around the difference in size for a image generation model vs an OK at best text model.

signal imp
#

I think Alpaca 13b is supposed to be ok-ish, though someone claimed the default settings on the cpp one were not good

plain slate
#

Not sure which ones I tried, not at my PC, but I tried a few... none even close to chatgpt

signal imp
#

I'm sure there will be more work on trimming size as time goes on and more is learned, especially with the more open source people going at it. I think there hasn't been as much downward pressure with the centralized models

#

I saw some paper that claimed you could halve the size of most LLMs with no difference in functionality

#

This is another thing where tools may help. Like how much knowledge can you externalize from the model itself and still get higher level cognitive abilities..

near horizon
#

Its iOS for compatibility & stability. Too many android flavours and modded versions. IOS is easier to code for.

plain slate
# signal imp I saw some paper that claimed you could halve the size of most LLMs with no diff...

Most likely, I mean for real world example you only need to look at how the sizes of stable diffusion models have shrunk.
If specific use cases could then be added as extras (thinking Lora's in stable diffusion here where you train specifics that can be used in almost all models) then that would reduce the vram needed significantly.
That would make each ai install very specific though

signal imp
#

There is a lot missing too from most diffusion models. Like try to generate a yo-yo or cuttlefish with W-shaped eyes, etc. We're very centered on humans and certain animals and certain objects and locations. In text, it feels a bit less centered, with people going in all directions of knowledge and wanting to go in depth, so I think it is more obvious what is missing

plain slate
# near horizon Its iOS for compatibility & stability. Too many android flavours and modded ver...

tbh coding for android is not that hard. Your chosen sdk (there's some issues with that in a sec) shows what phones you support.
You don't need to worry about all the variations out there as the sdk handles it all.

...the issue, Google keep changing the target sdk and when you update it can mean a year or two down the line you have a ton of depreciated code.... not an issue for ai that moves way too fast to be still using the same code a year from now... but an issue I have faced on a few of my apps

near horizon
#

It may not be "difficult" but ios is simpler process so it's first out. Most projects do it this way.

plain slate
#

Control net would be a great example of that.

signal imp
plain slate
#

Indeed

#

The amount of guides I have followed them needed to adapt to 2.1 while understanding what is under the hood .... well...typing that I realise I probably learnt more that way

signal imp
#

Does seem to be changing slowly. I think most of ControlNet is working for 2.1 now too. Illuminati Diffusion has been pretty popular and for 2.1, etc.

plain slate
#

I have learnt that if I want someone to check out my comfyui flow and give advice I need to change the target subject to a woman... that's probably an Internet issue though rather than a specific group lol

signal imp
#

We'll see what happens when SDXL is officially released. It may be that most will jump over 2.1 and go straight to that. Though depends on the requirements of the model too

plain slate
plain slate
#

But that started life as an anime example on 1.5 had to do a lot to get it to 2.1

#

I think when stable diffusion release the next model (in training at the minute) we may get a shift to the latest stuff.... may

plain slate
#

There's even ways to train images on less than 6gb vram now, something thought impossible a month ago lol.
I think text ai is moving at a much slower pace though.

#

Or it may just be a case of the feeds I see are all image gen this, image gen that.... text gen is less glamorous, less likely to get "clicks" even if its more amazing to myself when you can convert a whole introduction to a book from your personal style to that of Terry Prattchet, spike milligan or a call of the cathulu novel.
We even converted an introduction to a D&D write up to a friends script.
The ai understood the content enough to completely set it up and even had phoebe interrupt with "oh I hate it when viscount are evil" showing it understood the parts of the story specific characters would reference.
(Yeah that impressed me a ton even if it's an incredibly geeky thing to be impressed by)

#

I also found that ai like chatgpt deals well with my dyslexia, in ways that spellcheckers do not. I am sure I have misspelled some of those names.

dense kraken
#

unpopular opinion, but I think I kinda prefer a lot of things to be done within my browser, instead of downloading an individual app for every service I use?

plain slate
#

Depends on the app for me... if its just a Web view disguised as an app then totally agree...
But a dedicated app using an api... that can have a lot of benifits

Hi 🙂 been lurking for a while, and using Perplexity for a bit longer, but first time I've wanted to ask something. Great work on the iPhone app release btw. The question I had relates to the iPhone app actually - I was wondering what app usage data specifically (ie, what product interactions and what constitutes 'other' interactions) is linked to your identity (apple id etc)? For example, by product or other interactions, would this include every question you ask? 🙂

#

My query really stems from the ever increasing problem of our personal information being captured and stored online, coupled with the amount of hacking we've seen in recent years - a lot of personal information being stolen. Quite the dilemma. I did read some of the Privacy Policy for Perplexity, and I saw that the links clicked was specifically mentioned, and it does say identification information is stored as well, but it skirts around how those data are relational or not. I think it's implied that they are linked together, under the mention of personalisation. Understand where I'm going here? Asking a digital assistant any question you ever wondered is great, it's amazing truly, but I worry about centralised entities holding on to records of every question an identifiable individual asks, and the potential issues that might have if the information was ever stolen. Just food for thought.

When it comes to any of these services, or even data collection as a whole, you're better off assuming that the public is going to read tomorrow what you've written today. If your concerns are of that nature, your best defense is your own, layered with the defenses of a platform and any medians that data passes through. Even then, it's probably too late to worry about that, considering the data you've dispersed throughout the internet all of the time before you were becoming aware of said issues. 🤷‍♀️ Also just food for thought.

ornate briar

#

I have no affiliation with the service. I'm just another person like you.

Either way, you can do your own research or dismiss me. I don't mind either way.

ornate briar
# vocal jetty Either way, you can do your own research or dismiss me. I don't mind either way.

I don't want to dismiss what you've said, it's definitely true, and I'm certainly aware very much of that. But at the same time I know that we can't change the past, so there's not much point in reflecting on all of the information we've previously dispersed throughout the internet. What we can do is improve the future though. The ethical dilemma inside my query sort of presents a new challenge or opportunity too, potentially a new project or solution - how can we provide this technology to all, in a way where people can maintain their anonymity? Definitely something I'm going to think on and talk to colleagues about.

Just wanted to say that I love Perplexity AI. I love the interface and design, and how "snappy" responses are. I appreciate the simple, modern, and uncluttered interface.

#

Is it a fine-tuned GPT-3 variant?

I think that anonymity is going to be difficult to preserve. For example, any service, such as OpenAI, that uses a phone number is also using an identifier more globally unique than your real name. Using a VPN won't change anything when you sign into a service or use an app that has access to your phone number, for example. That data can be most-certainly tied to you. I do agree that we should be looking forward as to how to ethically preserve our privacy though, for sure.

ornate briar

Considering that 72% of the world's data is user-generated, I would again suggest that users themselves take a bit more care, moving forward. That's the most immediate course of action that we can take, that is.

Tho no solid idea on whether the search/chat interface for regular consumers will get limited/paywalled in the future...

#

I do hope Perplexity's to-business side of their business can earn enough so that the to-customer side can remain accessible

Maybe I'm overlooking something obvious, but what is the backend of Perplexity? Is it a proprietary LLM? or does it work off of existing models, either through open source or something locally hosted like LlaMA (but not LlaMA, I'm aware they're non-comercial ATM)?

Hey,

I’m just some random guy. I really like Perplexity and have been finding it very valuable to me since I started using it a few days ago. I really really want them to stand in front of Microsoft and Google and possibly break the impending duopoly in AI search. There’s a lot of value in Perplexity and I hope they don’t screw it up.

My understanding is, the "citations" are provided by a different process, and is fed to the language model along with your prompt. Even if the language model decides to not use the sources, it will still be displayed in there.

Hello guys 👋 I'm really fascinated by the Perplexity, how it works and its features.
What I was wondering - how does follow-up question highlight works? I'm talking about this underlined terms.
Already tried telling text-davinci-003 to highlight possible follow-up terms, but seems like it is not reliable or doesn't work at all. Perplexity output seems so fast that i doubt it is done during post-processing. Or maybe I am mistaken 🤔

Discord search doesn't seem helpful for me, so couldn't find if this question was asked before 😬

There are no Spanish channels on this server.
The AI does understand Spanish. You can add "en espanol" to your prompt to ask it to respond in Spanish.

#

Somewhat common questions I see in this discord
Disclaimer, I'm not part of Perplexity team, what I say is not official.

What technologies does Perplexity use?
People say it's GPT 3.5, but it's never confirmed by a Perplexity team member - but at the very least it uses a large language model similar to GPT. It's also enhanced by web search results. Perplexity team members have said that they don't use OpenAI APIs nor Google APIs.

Does Perplexity understand [language]?
Likely yes. Add "in [language]", eg "in spanish" "in french" (or your language's equivalent) in your prompt to ask the AI to respond in your language.

Can it summarize a page?
Yes, ask "summarize" + URL to the page, or click "summarize" on the Chrome extension.

Can it summarize a PDF?
Yes, do the same as above. The PDF has to be publicly available online; it doesn't work with your local file.

Can I save a thread to read later?
They'll probably add this feature in the future.
Workaround: save a share link before you leave a thread.

Can I have the discord bot take into account my previous questions?
Create a thread.

How does Perplexity make money?
According to their own AI, they take investment money, and they sell their service as some business solution.

#

I’m new here. I had a few questions -

#

It is quite clear that Perplexity AI uses a Google search call at the backend to calculate the search results. This is easily verifiable using a few tail queries. Then it “combines” the results using GPT4 (and some in house small models).

#

Is it legal to use Google search as a backend API?

tame current
#

yes (?) then why would they offer an api?

#

I have another question, are you using kotlin for the android app development? I would like to learn that.

dense kraken
#

As far as I'm aware, some Perplexity team members have said that they use neither OpenAI's nor Google's APIs.

#

... Questions for the devs. Sometimes the AI's response gets cut off.

  • At this point, I should ask "continue" to let the AI finish?
  • What if the thing that got cut off is the "detailed" response? What should I do, do I still ask "continue" or something else? Does the AI's context when I ask follow up questions include their "detailed" response?

Perplexity understands Spanish and handles it like a bilingual, it's wonderful! I realized that it is not universal with the language of its sources, if you ask a very specialized question in Spanish whose source is in Spanish, you receive the right answer , but if you ask the same question in English, if it doesn’t find the answer in english sources , it says that it didn’t find an answer, when it was in a specialized source of the subject in Spanish.

Is Perplexity AI there to solve "search" problem or is it like other AIs too that can write code, make poems and all. I have tried search and it beats any other AI available in the market right now but can't say the same in other "departments". Is Perplexity AI a "search" AI? because if it is then I won't ask it any coding related or creative questions and use it for search instead.

#

Even explaining complex topics in simple terms is something perplexity can't do. Whenever I ask it to explain me something in simple words, it just searches the web again and gives me a similar response to the previous response.

#

It would be perfectly okay if perplexity ai only tries to solve the search problem. That is why I am asking whether Perplexity AI is only there to solve search related problems

Hi @warped marsh! Thank you for sharing your experience and trying various tasks with Perplexity AI. You're right about the search experience, but search is not its sole purpose.
You can see examples in our channels and use cases provided by other users, we are always working to improve its performance in coding, math, generative tasks, and more.
While it may sometimes lean toward search as its primary domain, we're on it.
Please report any issues you encounter in our feedback channels, we appreciate your input, it helps us to see where we need to improve further.

The focused search feature is great (ie being able to limit the search to wikipedia for example). Any thoughts about making a custom focused search? I know we can use site:example.com to get results from one website domain (I am not sure there is a way to add more than website). But I was wondering if you can allow users to create a list of websites, save them and be able to focus the search.

I've been helping start-ups within AI/ML scale technical teams from the ground up and I noticed you're hiring across Engineering.

I look forward to hearing back 🙂

Just discovered Perplexity a few days ago, and i really have to say im amazed. Not necessarily from the system itself, since i already used ChatGPT to some extend in the past - but rather from the accessibility standpoint, the simplicity of the user interface and of course the including of sources, which enhances the entire experience you gain from it by magnitudes.

Great job, and thanks for this opportunity of using it. I include it in my work-day as a research assistant, spell check and translation tool and overall to just simplify my work as a whole.

Can't wait for it to leave the beta and subscribe to a paid plan.

Guys, please add some public benchmarking results of your LLM against other solutions (e.g. MMLU and others). There's a lot of fresh closed-, semi- & open-source LLM services sprout up every day based on mixture of different models, hence very soon the market will be oversaturated with offers and it will be crucial to thoroughly test each solution. It's probably better to be upfront in this regard for your publicity.

TBH I work on writing SEO articles in Japan, and I believe that I can further streamline my work by using AI powered by GPT-4 for the necessary research involved in article writing. However, I feel bad about burdening the API cost on Perplexity. If we have the API key, I think it would be beneficial for both of us to use it.

Wow, I just discovered that Perplexity can insert images to the answer (like plot of pdf of normal distribution). But sometimes it can't (for example it can't draw pdf-s of normal and t-student distribution on same plot). I'm curios about how it works and what are the capabilities and limitations of Perplexity in displaying images? Do I understand correctly that it can read html and write simple markdown/html, so it that answer can contain something like !(title)[some_url://image.png] where some_url://image.png, where some_url it found in html code of some web page from search result?
