I’m getting access denied, likely because I use a VPN. There’s lots of people that use VPNs (PIA, Express, Proton, Nord, etc) so shutting down access to VPNs isn’t helpful or likely to win users over to regularly using Perplexity as a search/answer engine.

I understand that VPNs represent an attack vector and there are sometimes malicious actors that use it for bad reasons but I hope you keep IP bans at an absolute minimum.

I’ve used perplexity heavily for a while now and this is the first time I’ve ever encountered this kind of thing. So hopefully this is just a rare exception and not a new policy.

As a regular user of a VPN I’m used to seeing stuff like this and (out of necessity) have a bit of tolerance for it. But when it happens too much I’m progressively less likely to reuse a service, and I suspect many VPN users are like this.

But like I said this is the first time I’ve ever encountered it and I’ve used perplexity hundreds of times, so nbd. Looks to have been a defensive action taken by cloudflare.

Question. I just installed the Chrome extension with the "Ask anything..." about "This page" feature. It doesn't seem to actually see the contents on the page. I have been trying to integrate Open AI chat gpt`s api to slack api, to check few settings and paraphrase sentences/updates.
And its a free plan, the rate limit is 2,500 requests per month, with a limit of 100 requests per minute.
When executing, I am receiving an error message that says "you have exceeded the rate limit for requests less than 10 per minute" when using the OpenAI API,
However there are no such requests made using my api key and this seems like we are forced to buy the premium plans before even testing the working with basic plans first.

I found a workaround using an AI that can import PDFs but the Chrome plugin can’t access any of the pages I need it to access like collegiate journal articles. Probably because they are not public web pages. I tried pasting the text in a local html file to see if that would work but it didn’t

i know a lot of startups when they first started used GPT-3 but later switched to open source LLMs like Google Flan-T5 for cost reasons and performance was just a bit worse. eg elicit.org

I think it realy is scraping the actual page, that is why when i ask for date/time it actually pulls out the curret date/time on page

I was trying to restrict the domain to google books and I got interesting results.. if i search directly for content that is in google books preview.. it doesn't find it.. but i notce some searches are indeed pulling content from google book preview content. My guess is.. if you search certain keywords, it can find the google book page, and then it scrapes and indexes the results from the google book preview.. but the content of the preview itself isn't indexed. so if you search directly for it.. it doesnt appear

If you are thinking about the Bing AI chat bot, I see Perplexity more like a search engine than a chat bot. Because the answers are always based on some search results. I haven't seen it answer/interact anyhow that would make me think that I am chatting with someone. It's like the ChatGPT but it doesn't care much about the "dialogue". It cares more about the answers and references, if I could put it that way.

You are correct however Bing is much the same way. You just happen to be able to chat with it too, however what it really is all about and what they are focusing on are the web based answers. Or answers, that are complex enough which require both the research and processing of LLM.

I would class chatGPT as a different tool, but would certainly put Perplexity, YouChat and Bing in the same category

When I search for Perplexity, sometimes it returns false information that is different from what I asked for, sometimes Concise returns different information and Detail returns the correct information.

In my testing, bing is always worse and much slower. This is for short questions however. I am not writing more than 5-10 words per query.

I wouldn't use bing currently just because of how slow it is. Even if it was better at answering. It's ui is glitchy, it has more restrictions etc.

Perplexity on the other hand is fast, beautiful and since last week almost always correct. It just needs more functions now like dedicated news etc

hey! i just discovered this service and i assume it's highly closed source as other text completion models are currently, but are there any open source inspirations y'all had for this text prediction(?) bot, like ones that use the same model to learn code-wise? nlp ai intrigues me a ton but the majority of the sufficiently advanced ones are either closed source or open source without a demo and require somewhat crazy specs (like eleutherai's stuff), so i'm not quite sure how they compare to closed source models.

Some shower thought: would it be possible (ever) to search for an info in all languages? So if I ask for cookies made of honey, cinnamon and cocoa it would search not only English language sites, but any site. Similar how ChatGPT gives back the "knowledge" no matter the input language - and it only translates the output language. So maybe a Finnish, a German or a Spanish wrote a great cookie recipe, but I would never know about it, because I search in English.

For whatever reason Bard doesn’t understand ANY other language… which is particularly egregious when every other LLM I have tested is capable of responding in multiple languages

I'm curious, what types of jobs do you guys think AI will open up in the future? I find it difficult to believe that in order to work with AI in the future, you'll have to be an MLE/programmer/mathematician or the like; especially considering what AI can do already. What are you guys' thoughts?
