It has been too long for me to remember all the exact features, but I was talking to the people who worked on Riot Vanguard, and forcing a few windows security features (like TPM) to be on for the players made almost every common market cheat stop working. They enforce all of those features for their competitive esports players, but the features are too complicated to enable for normal users to figure out.

But yeah, if Windows was built to give developers more control over the kinds of access players had while playing their game, cheating would be dramatically less common than it is now. A big part of the problem (on win10 especially) is just how incredibly easy it is to bypass any anti-cheat and run things undetected.

As an example, one of the big cheat companies I had to deal with at my last company sold really premium cheats. If I recall correctly, it was like an 80USD monthly subscription to use the cheats they made for our game lol. But that cheat developer also had a HWID ban bypasser, and they didn't even charge money for it, they just gave it out for free.

I mean I can tell you from experience that developers are really not interested in your data, the price of data is basically worthless compared to the money games make on mtx and stuff, not to mention that stealing data off people's PCs like that is just like... illegal in most places.

Kernel level anti-cheats are used because they're just a necessary evil right now. It's the level that all cheats operate on (that aren't trash, at least), and developers have no way to stop users from running software on that level while playing a game (thanks windows). Cheats would be effectively undetectable without having something operating on the same level to keep an eye on things.

But yeah, speaking from experience, the PR aspect of it is a nightmare. It's a damned if you do, even more damned if you don't sorta thing (because if you don't, your game will die from being overrun by cheaters)

If you go REALLY extreme, and assume the software is completely and utterly compromised, they could use it to inject some serious malware onto your PC, but that kinda paranoia is still weird to me, because it has never happened, and again, if that happened to a normal .exe like Discord or something, the damages would be pretty much equally as catastrophic. A normal .exe can very easily inject a keylogger or something and give the hackers everything they would want.

Maybe the real answer is that normal users just aren't paranoid enough about the everyday software they use lol, and for whatever reason anti-cheats hit their brain differently

But when an entire software company is backing up a software, it's more a question of whether or not you expect the entire company to somehow become compromised, which is A) exceptionally rare, and B) would be a catastrophic event regardless of which software company it was.

The "expert" opinions I see usually touch on the fact that a kernel level software could do serious damage, I.E a ransomware virus or something, but I can't even think of the last time a company has gotten so compromised that someone was able to inject a virus into their consumer software.

the way reddit designs its moderation feature is quite possibly the dumbest thing I've ever seen lmao. Some subreddits have fantastic moderators, but it's completely down to chance, really.

Basically, how it works, is that whoever is the first mod to create (or remain) at the top of a subreddits mod team becomes the "head mod", and the "head mod" has absolute power over the subreddit, and the entire rest of the mod team.

So if someone gets into that position who is just like, a terrible mod, or doesn't represent the community properly, they can completely derail an entire subreddit, and reddit does almost nothing to ever stop them.

Yeah they're just super hands off and rarely intervene unless things are completely on fire in a subreddit (and even then, they often do the laziest solution, like shutting the subreddit down completely)

Yeah discord is one of the only platforms I can think of that's still fairly hands off for its platform moderation. So long as the content isn't straight up illegal, Discord doesn't try to intervene with how servers are managed.

Who knows how long that will last tbh, their recent ID shenanigans feel like an omen of things to come.

Eh I think this was always their plan. I don't think this rollout was an honest attempt to protect children, it's a PR/legal move. Discord has been getting a lot of negative attention because of how much child predators and stuff use it, and how many legal cases the platform has been involved in. I think this ID thing was purely a move for them to say "look guys! We're protecting the children!"

I imagine their intention is to roll this feature out to as few users as possible, because it only harms the user experience without really impacting their bottom line. All of their checks for whether or not a user is adult are probably very lenient.

It's common in marketing and monetization. Basically, if you're doing something people don't like, release the worst possible version of it first to prime them, and then fix it to make the alternative not feel nearly as bad.

Another common place you see it is Prince Anchoring in videogame monetization. If every skin in your game costs 20 dollars on average, and then you release a battlepass where you can get 5 skins for only 10 dollars, it feels like a super good deal! Ignoring the fact that you're still paying 2 dollars per videogame skin. You can see this really obviously in the game Valorant, but every game with microtransactions does this.
