I work at an historical society as an host for school field trips and it is sad to see kids look at an old census record and not be able to read it. Technology is great, obviously, but there was a whole "baby with the bathwater" approach all across the US which is now beginning to bite. I've been in schools without a single book in the library because there are tablets or iPads and such. It's crazy ... there is so much which hasn't been digitized!

I gotta say, enshrouded is probable The Survival Game of the year. Sure it has it's flaws here and there, especially when it comes to farming loot, or rather getting "certain" loot items, but it has crazy potential, and we don't even have the full Game yet, it's still an Early Access.

The only real big issues i see, is the performance, and crashes, but i'm sure these will get fixed eventually in the Future, what are y'all's takes on the Game?

Rough questions, i love a lot of things about the game in general, but i probably have to pick the building aspect of the game.
i've played a lot of different survival games with build mechanics in the past but none were as unique as enshrouded.

i would have never played the game if my friend hadn't recommended it to me, he described the game to me like

"If you like survival games which give you all the freedom you could ever need and a HUGE world to explore, Enshrouded is THE game."

and he was absolutely right

the only thing i currently dislike is that you can't really build "anywhere". Some places look absolutely stunning, but the altar wouldn't really fit in many cases because you can't rotate it in a way where it looks, or rather fits well.

So, I've been trying to get the blast furnace. I checked and completed all of the blacksmith's quests, even the blacksmith's assistant's armor quest. I wanted to keep it in-game, but couldn't find anything. I finally gave up after following a few possible quest leads and looked it up online. Apparently, you need to tame a yak for the farmer to get the blast furnice.... I would never have thought that on my own, and that's quite odd lol

I want to talk about this piece. The game doesn't tell you, or hint, at where the blast furnace is. Not until you do the yak quest. And it's easier to get wool by going through scavenger bases, not yak gathering. This leads my thought process away from the yak quest initially.

it is true that you wouldnt know why the game is gatekeeping you from the furnace though I'd have to read the wording of the flame altar and see if it hints that you need to go prepare. even still I doubt they'd set the game up to say ignore the yak quest and just go scrounging. as that's more a personal choice

one has to respect the game design a little bit and say ok I'll do the quests in front of me and see what happens

the fact is it's reasonable to say as long as SOMEONE gives me quests I am advancing

and I should do that until I"m not advancing

they have you in a tight funnel at the start but it does go freward

The alter, and a lot of other places, tell you to prepare. The first armor recipe I got for frost resistance requires steel. I assumed I needed to progress with the blacksmith first since I already had a lot of wool. It's not that the game says to ingore the yak quest, it just seemed like a lower teir side quest rather than a main progression quest.

the important point I think is you want to play organically, you don't want to be hand held, which fyi is a GREAT goal. Not finding spoilers all the time and fighting it through is impressive as snot.

I just think having a quest not but doing it (as you already had so much wool) IS something you can tweak to make sure your enjoyment remains intact.

you are already to the summits so you likely already appreciate how intertwined quest advancement is....I have to do WHAT now, to open up the next Hunter quest, so ok, I'll go climb that spire first..

Yeah, I love the whole game, and my focus goal is making a cozy base in the snow. There are main quests and side quests. Items that have quest icons on them too that can lead to opening up quests, which is cool too. And I plan doing and completing everything because this is the best game I've played in a long time. But I want to do main progression to get into the snow first, and the farm animal quests have all been optional side quests. It makes more sense, to me, to make/show the yak quest a main quest at least, so that we know its priority to the main game progression.

The Wolf's Fang gear set popped up after awhile, and that's enough to be in the peaks with and make a base, but that didn't pop up until after the high-end recipe popped up. A cool idea would be to have the blacksmith talk about someone he knew who had the ability to make high-end cold weather gear with a furnace hotter than the smelter (or something), and that he last remembers him living in the snow. That then at least connects the furnace to the yak quest. And to not have the high-end cold weather gear pop up until we get the blast furnace, after we see the wolf's fang set.

I would just say that my main point is, that it's not clear that the yak quest is a main progression quest.

Yea i'm pretty sure the yak falls under Embervale, which are world progression quests and the rest are under flameborne, which are essentially optional.

So it is clear for the most part. (I've not looked a the quest log in quite a while so what section they're located in is from memory and susceptible to being wrong 😄 )

Other quests that are under embervale are dye quests, cat a dog stuff, instruments, lunar new year stuff. So some of it is world progression, but most isn't.

That's been my approach. Just play the game organically and complete quests as they roll in (mostly, I still haven't chased that cat xD). Playing that way lets me legitimately say that the game does an excellent job of explaining itself and what you should be doing, so long as you pay attention and some of the surprises and puzzles you come across feel really rewarding if you don't know about them ahead of time

I really only had to refer to wiki or discord once or twice, when I was trying to 100% things. If you don't care about that or you're still just playing through the game the first time I'd highly advise avoiding what spoilers you can and just follow your journel for the best experience

In particular, when you get stuck and you can't find something, stop looking at the minimap and really explore the surroundings, most things have paths that lead to them so if you're getting stuck on a waypoint because you're standing right on top of it and it's just a hill, look around for a path or alternate way to go around

Playing Enshrouded organically means something different for each person individually. It's not a linear game, and there's no one way to play it, which is perfect. From my own organically grown experience, I wanted to make a cozy snow base. So I organically found solutions to get me there by figuring out quests to do, until the yak quest. Organically confusing me xD

One of the biggest problems is people look up guides on how to get the best of the best as quick as possible (Which is okay if that's how they want to play their single player experience) Yet with the game being in EA a lot of the guides are done at release, where they get the most hype and then never touched again, which means as things change the guides don't and more often than not, people miss steps because they're following a guide that's well outdated 😄 In this particular case, if i recall correctly, you get the yak quest around the same time you either find or complete the albaneve spire, i agree taming an animal when at that point it's not a new mechanic isn't intuitively the next step in progression, the when where and how you get the quest does fit the bill (Though i can also understand how quests can easily be overlooked/lost if you haven't been completing mostly area by area.)

ok, so I'm trying survival mode to see if it is workable, but I'm running into a problem. I'm low on food, so I kill some goats. They show fur and meat in loot hover, but when I click on them, one of the lootables disappears, of course it is the meat I want. Is this a survival mode thing, do I have to choose only one item per loot or something?

Nah that's a known issue. It shows the full loot table regardless of what the drop was. In that case, the goat "can" drop meat and fur, but "actually" only dropped the fur

It's annoying but the actual loot mechanic is working as it should, sometimes meat drops are random and iffy (especially when you need it xD)

If you're more accurate with what you're asking (As in what major update you last played, there's been 6.) The last biome was in update 4, back in November. The most recent update added some new POI's to current explorable areas. (As well as reworking a lot of the shroud.)

which in turns means you're looking at changing the way encounters are built, and PoIs are built, and how the world is laid out

It's something you have to train your body for. Get yourself used to closing your eyes in a peaceful state for 20 minutes and set an alarm for when that time is over. After a bit your body will recognize it and adjust

I've actually been doing it for the last year or so because I have really bad insomnia, so I've been trying to adjust my sleep schedule. At this point it's almost autmatic, after work when I get home and change out of my work clothes, I nap for about 20 minutes and wake up again. Might sound counter intuitive but it's so I don't crash out super early and screw up my sleep schedule

Like after I get home from work it's 6 hours before bed time so I need to stay awake until then

Otherwise I'll get so tired that I fall asleep and wake up 5 hours before my alarm and my day is screwed

I didn't have apnea until a couple years ago, and it gets aggrivated when I take sleeping meds. I'll literally just stop breathing in my sleep, and wake up aware that I'm not breathing but unable to do anything about it. Right now they're trying to figure out why
