Maces saw a surge in popularity as the construction of padded armour made it significantly harder to cut through. Nothing ever came close to the popularity of polearms for pretty much any role, but their effectiveness as an anti-armor weapon is a little bit overstated in games media. It's why the natural progression was to warpicks and warhammers, and people made them more effective by putting them on poles instead of short shafts.

very, very few people had the time and money to learn how to use one like a master, many trained to use them in duels because that was a fairly common way to settle disputes at the time, but duelling techniques don't always translate well to a battlefield
