Just like using a Longsword, you still have to defend yourself. Polearms are very easy to win with, and also very easy to block with. But if you're all offense then yeah of course you're gonna get smoked by someone who closes the gap on you if you whiff or are unprepared

Pommel striking is effective, but a good alternative is using your crossguard or hilt. It doesn't endanger you nearly as much, and you can put more force into it.

Like half of its length is considered "the head" and that will deal blunt damage even on indirect glancing blows.
