Commoner longsword does hit a certain way, but as for the best? Gonna have to disagree. Veteran is way more fun, aiming around armor imo. But not too much armor, like Soldier or Knight.

So the real answer is actually that you need to understand your own bio-mechanics. This game does a pretty decent job at mimicking the momentum and swings that you, yourself can physically make. Once you understand that the weapon is merely an extension of your arm and start to use it thusly will you really get a feel for what a proper swing can feel like, edge alignment will naturally follow as you learn.

I've been learning the pommel strike with the longsword

He's a really annoying cunt but there are a few tactics I utilize against him that work most of the time.

1. Sprint (shift) + stab him (alt + LMB)
2. Sprint (shift) half-sword him (RMB)
3. Keep spamming stab (alt+LMB) until he backs up into a fence and when he stumbles swing left and right at his head
4. Hold stab formation (alt+LMB) and wait until he does his left and right swing and then quickly slice at his head from left or right

He's like 12 foot tall with a 15 foot sword that he can swing endlessly without getting tired and can skewer you by just existing. He can also follow-up and hit you in 0.1 seconds instantly maiming or decapitating you lol

If your main issue is range, instead of upgrading to commoner, you can go peasant with a pitchfork or hoe.
Axes are either too slow or short-ranged, and while commoners with swords can very easily dismember the boss, that means you have to get into his effective range and either parry or dodge an attack.

Go outside and try swinging around something like a pitchfork. See how it feels, I'll save you the time, it does not feel very natural. The same principle goes for any long weapon. Find where the weight is distributed on it and use momentum. you and that weapon are one entity. you move it moves and vice versa.

I much enjoy the lower levels than the higher ones

so getting sent back down is a good thing in that aspect

swinging it is easy for anyone, wielding it in a combat scenario involves a lot more than swinging

follow-up is extremely important in melee combat, and the heavier/more unbalanced the weapon is, the increasingly more difficult it is to adjust yourself and your weapon for what you do next

like if I go for a swing downwards, I'm also gonna need to be able to redirect the swing if it misses or is blocked to use it again for either blocking or a followup attack

it also may just be a warped perception on my end, but it feels like the purple Willie you play as in ultimate challenge is a total wuss
