Not 100% consistent because nothing in life is, but sidestrafe running and baiting a good swing from them, then getting in close with grapples to knock them down has been my go to. Thats usually my strat with polearms in general when I dont have a polearm or huge shield to counter and it works reasonably enough, though the spike bat is a bit trickier due to said spikes gripping you if they land

If you're close enough to a spike stick to where he can't effectively swing, I usually just swing the weapon I have at the head/body. That way, you can get him, but he can't get you unless he backs away:

Honestly though. Best strategy for you is to just keep them to one side, position your sword to block an incoming strike and then follow through when they attack, It is imperative that you do not run into the spikes. Approach at a perpendicular angle, keeping the sword in front of you as you step in for the decisive blow. Do not fuck it up and you'll survive, do and you will be hoisted up for all to see the outcome of your lousy footwork.

Hm, I kind of agree. Sometimes the RNG can be frustrating, especially when you just can't seem to get the one thing you're looking for, but I do enjoy certain aspects of it as it favours improvisation, which I find fun. Generally though, I'm quite happy with the base idea of the ultimate challenge, it just feels a little rushed and rough around the edges imo.

So, when it comes to falchion or any shortsword type weapon follow the rules of 3. Any time you cut, follow through with at least one, but ideally two or more, quick and consecutive strikes. Footwork is also key, you're blade is your ward use it as such, never step in front of your blade, but instead follow behind it and never approach head on, always keep to a 45ish degree angle with your sword doing the leading. Victory is not a guarantee, but these steps if done correctly can greatly influence the outcome. The rest falls on you.

Your footwork controls are also tied to your camera angle (tilt) and weapon position (counterbalance).
You have to use a combination of all three to get the most out of staying upright, getting up, and recovering.

Can also help you take strikes better if you can kind of offset incoming momentum.
