That stance is the halfsword stance. It's actually a VERY advantageous guard/position, if you know how to use it; generally for close quarters combat

most of the T7/T8 battles are just slugfests trying to knock the other guy out with blows to the head rather than actual duels to find gaps in the armour

given that the weapon swings are more art than science is there a semi reliable way to get into the gaps?

i mean a lot of my fights end with either knocking down and holding my wepaon to their Neck until surrender. but generally if you are playing in the armor battles where most the body is covered it is going ot be a slug fest to knock the other to the ground, normally on the ground during a grapple you would find the gaps and kill them but thats a little harder in this game with just the mouse

Solution: Clean reinstall

Delete all files relating to the half sword playtest existing in your local files. Be sure to back up your screenshots folder if you took any!
Navigate to and delete the Half Sword Playtest folder located in the following directory.
C:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common
Navigate to and delete the Saved folder located in the following directory.
C:\Users\<USERNAME>\AppData\Local\HalfSwordUE5
Navigate to and delete the folder VersionTest54 located in the following directory.
C:\Users\<USERNAME>\AppData\Local\VersionTest54

Finally, reinstall Half Sword Playtest.

How do you actually control where your character swings his weapon? I've been trying for hours to understand the controls in this game

It sometimes goes a little to the left, right, sometimes it loses all of it's momentum and does fuck all.

You may need to use a higher sensitivity. You have to use pretty
Linear motions in order to get strong power. If you aren’t slicing straight across from one side to the other at any orientation then it won’t be as powerful.

i would recommend going into the dummy arena and just trying to to practice swinging, and like doing general movements with your weapon, will help you get used to it

Idk if this Makes much difference but your character can become weakened from injuries as well as the screen can begin darkening on the edges and you will weaken from stamina loss. In lower tiers the beggar being lowest you don’t often run out of stamina unless you’re swinging too much or running too much. Also try using shift i forgot about mentioning that

Taking a break is always good! Come back later and find yourself doing way better for some reason. But this game has quite a bit of a learning curve to actually get good

So there's literally no setup. It's an .exe installer. Most of the mods for half sword are. They're all safe, as we all use them.
