use the swords length to your advantage when fighting smaller weapons and when fighting polearms/two handed halberd/spears, half swording is very useful to block an attack by pushing the handles out of the way and getting in close

otherwise,, i like to go in tier 3 and train parrying because longsword fights are most common there

i found new excuse for my skill issue
my sword's rotation is independent of willy's grip, all my willy controls is handle's position
willie (the enemy)'s sword's rotation seems to be actually controlled, he also keeps the entire momentum all the time, hence him having stronger attacks
in case willy i control, any hesitation in move leads to losing entire momentum, so unless im swinging as fast as my mouse can but controlling your weapon at the same time, it will lead to insta death
