c.ai has been super generous throughout this time. If they did wanted to rack up money, they would opt into paywalling the platform to as far as possible since the income there is more stable than ads. Ads can be pulled out anytime.

C.AI might be comfortable in how far they can push their consumers since people will keep using it regardless of their reputation being destroyed as it's still the 'greatest competitor' to a lot of people.

There's a lot of factors that determine what a company should and shouldn't do, unfortunately we consumers won't get much insight on company directions mainly because NDA (non-disclosure agreements) and other legal issues, and possibly even demands from partners/stock holders (i believe c.ai is a private company but partners still might have certain demands)

Main reason I chose C.AI was because it had no adverts, was free, and fun. Only one of those is how applicable, and it’s that it’s free — but barely. TL;DR for people who dont wanna read, the main reason is they need ads to keep the platform running and free to use.

maintaining a huge site and app like c.ai is SUPER expensive, considering you have to pay for powerful servers that can run 24/7, constant updates, you have to pay for moderation systems, mod teams, legal costs, etc etc. as your user base grows, those costs also grow! while some users pay for a subscription, the majority use the free version, which means c.ai needs another way to bring in money. and ads typically are the most common and stable solution.

its also kinda worth noting that c.ai originally had investor funding, and investors expect a return eventually. a platform cannot survive forever on vibes and early-stage funding. you need to make recurring revenue to pay for all of the important things that come with running a company like this.

is it frustrating to see ads? hell yeah. but its either ads, or higher paywalls, or reduced access. or they'd have to shut down the site entirely. so ads basically let the service stay open and free for everyone. in short, they're the trade-off for accessibility. you dont have to pay to chat with characters, and ads make that possible.

most platforms operate at a loss for the first SEVERAL years. completely normal mind you. they rely on investor funding and grants while they grow, eventually those investors want revenue. wasting money on updates or features is called product development, not throwing money into a bonfire.
