Changes in Interaction Counts

A number of you may have noticed your Character interaction counts decrease today. With some of the recent changes in swipe behavior to allow increased usage, some swipes were mistakenly being counted as interactions rather than accepted messages with the Character.

Sorry for the confusion! This was a case of over-counting (now fixed) — no one is losing legitimate interactions. 🙂

Whatever number you briefly achieved, here’s to you getting back there soon!

Team huddled given feedback from yesterday about a sudden "dumbification" of the characters. We are working to implement systems that will let us better measure the quality of model changes, so that we can avoid this kind of situation in the future. Thanks for the feedback all, and please rest assured that our plan is to have detailed, complex, and riveting dialogues with AIs -- anything that doesn't hit the mark is a bump along the road, not the final destination.

1. The new feedback system: we don't read individual messages when you give them ratings and/or use the new "Tell us more" feature. Only machines read them and it helps us make characters' responses better.
2. Last night we pushed some bad code and reverted that within an hour. Our safety mechanisms will keep getting better with time.

To make sure that we are actually able to answer the community's answers in a manageable way, we're going to not bring back the Discord server for now until we have the right kind of help. Hey everyone,

Wanted to let you all know that the team is aware of ongoing issues and are working to resolve them. Some issues you may have encountered when accessing old histories include:

• Frequent instances of “Internal Server Error 500”
• Unable to open old chat histories
• New messages in some old conversations "disappearing"
• Unable to delete messages
• Message generation button “staying on” after message completion

These issues are being caused by one of our old databases reaching capacity. Our team is currently working with our provider and I’ll update here as soon as the issues are resolved.

For users who encounter an error when chatting, please try saving your chat and starting a new chat as a temporary fix to failed histories.

**Additional note: **The issues previously mentioned are not caused by users sending too many chat messages. I've been seeing some users discuss deleting their chat messages to try to help, but just want to inform everyone deleting your chats will not resolve the issue.  Appreciate your willingness to help ❤️ but the issue is not related to message count.

Users have shared feedback and expressed frustration when chat messages would begin to generate and then disappear completely. Over the next few weeks, we’re making changes which will reduce the number of messages that disappear while they’re being generated. As a result, the final message may be truncated. Here are a few workarounds:

2️⃣ Press enter/send to prompt the Character to speak again

Hey everyone,

**“Edit Message” **and “Generate Character Greeting” buttons will be rolling out for all c.ai+ users over the next few weeks! Check out details below:

Edit Message

The ability to edit messages generated by both users and AI has been a highly requested feature, and we want to make sure we do it right! Initially, we are introducing an Edit Last Message button exclusively for human-sent messages. Over the coming weeks, we will monitor feedback and usage to expand and evolve this feature, ultimately incorporating it for AI-generated messages as well. Please stay tuned for updates on this exciting development.

How to Edit Your Last Message:

• For mobile app users, long press on your most recent message to activate the edit pop-up box.
• For web users, select the edit icon located to the right of your most recent message to activate the edit pop-up box.

**Generate Character Greetings **
Character creation has never been this easy! Using the Generate Character Greeting button, Character Creators can now type in a Character’s name and let the AI create a greeting for you. Re-generate the greeting as many times as you want and edit any part of the greeting until you’re satisfied.

Our team is actively working on some of your highly requested features and have multiple improvements on the way. We hope to share these soon! Please stay tuned for upcoming announcements and comment below if you have any feedback or suggestions.

**Server Status - June 10 **

Hey everyone,
Really appreciate everyone's patience as the team works to fix things. I know it's been frustrating the past few days and I wanted to share some updates:

• The "Personas missing" and “Profile details missing” issues were caused by the recent outages. Rest assured these will be restored when service returns fully.
• The team identified the cause for the "Responses not loading" issue. A fix has been rolled out for this, please let us know if you are still experiencing this bug.
• We are making progress on complete restoration of services, but it is taking a little longer than expected.
  Over the next few days, you may experience multiple short outages. Please bear with us as we work to resolve this.
• As we restore services, you may be placed in a waiting room to help us manage the server load.

The situation is not ideal, but I assure you the team is working on reuniting you with your Characters as soon as possible.

[Announcement] - Additional Changes for Under-18 users

Hey everyone,

As part of our ongoing commitment to safety outlined in the Community Roadmap, over the next few days we’re rolling out a number of changes specifically for users under 18 years old.

These changes include:

• A narrower set of searchable Characters. Characters not in this group will not be available to users under 18.
• Disabling the ability to create Public Characters. All new Characters created by users under 18 will be set to Private.
• Implementing suspensions for repeated violations of our Terms.
• New mechanisms to report chats and users.
• Increased filtering on model outputs and user inputs.
• Updating model outputs to undergo filtering before being displayed.

We’re thrilled to announce that Character Games is now in beta on web and mobile web for a limited time! (Note: it is not currently on the mobile app) This beta includes access for all current c.ai+ members, and anyone who subscribes to c.ai+. Additionally, a small portion of non-c.ai+ users will be included in this test.

How to Play:

• To play games, open a chat with any Character
• Important Note: The game context will become part of the conversation with the Character. If you don’t want this to affect your ongoing roleplay or conversation, we recommend starting a new chat before playing.
• Click the game controller icon on the right-hand side of the "Message" bar. 🎮
• Or, open the triple-dot menu and select “Play a Game.”
• From there, choose from a variety of games to explore.

This beta is only available for a short time—don’t miss the chance to try it out and share your feedback!

We recently released a new model that reduces needless repetition by almost 30%. This model is currently being tested with a large portion of users. Introducing ✨Chat Styles ✨ formerly known as Model Picker, a brand new feature designed to give you more control over your Character experience.

Starting today, users can pick the model experience that best suits their current mood and conversation goals. Choose from three distinct styles, each offering a unique flavor of interaction:

• Meow: Quick wits, faster words. Need a burst of energy and rapid-fire responses? "Meow" is your go-to. This style prioritizes speed, making it perfect for lighthearted banter and fast-paced scenarios. Meow is available to everyone over 18.
• Roar: Mix of speed & smarts. Looking for a balanced approach? "Roar" delivers a blend of quick thinking and insightful responses. It's a great all-around option for engaging conversations. Roar is available to everyone.
• Nyan: Smarter and more thoughtful. Craving depth and detail? "Nyan" offers a more intelligent experience. Nyan is currently only available to c.ai+ subscribers.

Some users who were part of early experiments may have noticed these new models. We appreciate everyone who’s shared feedback. Now that testing period is complete, we’re able to officially roll this out. If you were an early tester who created a chat with Braniac, your previous chats will continue to use Braniac (now known as Nyan). As we continue to iterate rapidly to improve our models, these Chat Styles may change. This is the first time we're offering the ability to choose between chat styles and we're going to be listening closely to your feedback. Based on your responses, we may end up evolving one or more of the models or even launch additional options. Keep that in mind and let us know which one’s your favorite!

Updates to keep C.AI running smoothly

Hey everyone,

Character.AI is powered by a cutting-edge large language model, which means chats and interactions with Characters are very expensive to serve. Maintaining our servers, feeding the devs, and ensuring we can continue to improve your experience on C.AI come with significant costs. With that in mind, we’ve launched two important updates:

Slow Mode (For peak times)

As many of you who have been with us since the beta days know, Character.AI has seen its fair share of “potato” (server) crashes and waiting rooms to manage heavy server loads. As we gear up for the summer, we are rolling out an update to help us manage high traffic periods.

During particularly busy times, some users may experience slower responses from Characters. For users who have a c.ai+ subscription, you will skip this slow mode. (Big thanks to all our c.ai+  loyal supporters who help us keep cookin’!)

Testing Ads

To help us keep offering a free option of Character.AI and also continue to improve your experience, we have begun to test various types of ads for a small subset of users. As we test, we are being very thoughtful to try to ensure this is not disruptive to your Chats with Characters.Your feedback is really important as we explore different variations of this. If you have ideas or suggestions on how we can implement them in a way that maintains a positive experience for all, please share them with us.

Important note: these test ads are not chosen or selected based on the content of your chats or conversations.

In addition to these updates, we’re continuing to roll out more improvements for both c.ai+ and free users. Some of our recent improvements for free users include: Chat Style Soft Launch, Expanded Character Greetings, Scenes, Tags, Better Search, and really exciting updates for Creators (stay tuned 😉). New memory updates for all users!!

We know how important it is for you that Characters remember important details. Starting today, we’re rolling out chat memories for all users which lets you add important information in a free form text box!

How it works:

• In any of your chats, head to the “Memory” section (you’ll find it in the menu when you click on the Character avatar in the upper right of your chat). There, you’ll see a new text box where you can enter up to 400 characters of fixed information.

Additionally, we’ve recently added the ability to edit in Auto Memories and are continuing to work on improving the overall memory of Characters.

📣 A Message from Our CEO

Hi! I want to introduce myself. My name is Karandeep Anand, and I’m the new CEO of Character AI.

I recently took on the CEO role, but I’m not new to the company – I’ve recently been helping and advising the team at Character, and have been a big fan of the product for a long time. So I know how special the Character community is. I know how deep a connection you feel to the platform and to your Characters. And I know you’ve been asking for new features and improvements that will make the c.ai experience better and richer.

Here’s my commitment to you: We’re going to move fast to give you a bunch of the things you’ve been asking for. A few examples of things coming in the next 60 days:

• We’re going to improve memory and overall model quality. Our research team is currently working on refining open source models to provide better memory and quality for Characters
• We’re going to make the filter less overbearing. (We care deeply about user safety and always will. But too often, the app filters things that are perfectly harmless. We’re going to fix that.)
• We’re going to implement better ways to tag your Characters and improve search and discoverability to help you find newer Characters.
• Give you better control and organization over Characters, including the ability to Archive them.
• More transparency on what we do or don’t allow during Character Creation to prevent “shadowbans”.

Separately, we’re also working on a bunch of features that let our creators make richer, more immersive and expressive Characters. Some of these are already live – give them a try! Over the coming months, we’re going to make all of these features easier to use, and we’re going to make sure they give you more and more options for what Characters can do. Your Characters are going to jump off the page, interacting in audio and video and inhabiting new worlds.

These aren’t promises for the distant future; I’m committing to launch all of that this summer and the team is hard at work to make all this real soon. I’ve spent many years building products, and I’m going to make sure we move fast and give you features that delight you and make c.ai more immersive and more fun.

Another Update on Removed Characters

Hey everyone,

As previously announced, we’re in the process of removing Characters in response to an IP-related report.

We know how much time many of you have invested in creating Characters and how important your conversations are. We are truly sorry for any negative impact these changes may cause. We have to follow the law, and that means taking Characters down when IP owners ask us to.

It’s important to note that we’re not alone in this. Many other generative AI companies are also facing similar challenges. This is an evolving space across the industry, and we’re committed to handling it as thoughtfully and fairly as we can.

While we work through this process, some of your original Characters that don’t violate our policies may be taken down by mistake. Our team is actively reviewing and will work to resolve this. We appreciate your patience as we do our best with limited resources.

To provide more transparency, we recently updated the app so that if your Characters are removed, they’ll now appear in your Recents list as “Moderated”. Additionally, our team is actively working on a variety of user experience and creator changes related to our IP report and takedown process.

As always, please adhere to our TOS and Community Guidelines as you’re creating and editing Characters.

Important Changes for Teens on Character.ai

Hey everyone,

We want to share some important updates about how we’re working to keep our community safe, especially our teen users. It has always been our goal to provide an engaging space that fosters creativity while maintaining a safe environment for our entire community. We’ve spent the last year building tools like Parental Insights, improved filters, and time spent notifications to further our efforts toward that goal.

But as the world of AI evolves, so must our approach to protecting younger users. Today, we want to update you on some important changes to our platform.

What’s Changing

• No more open-ended chat for under-18 users
  This change will begin rolling out on November 24th. During this transition period from now until no later than November 25th, we will limit chat time for our under-18 users. The limit will start at 2 hours per day and ramp down over the coming weeks.
  Similar changes for other countries will begin to roll out over the coming months.
• Age assurance

  We will be rolling out new age assurance functionality to help ensure users receive the right experience for their age. We have built an age assurance model in-house and will be combining it with leading third-party tools, including Persona.
• AI Safety Lab

  We’re launching an independent non-profit focused on next-generation AI safety for entertainment.

Why We’re Doing This

We’re making these changes to our under-18 platform in light of the evolving landscape around AI and teens. We have seen recent news reports raising questions, and have received questions from regulators, about the content teens may encounter when chatting with AI and about how open-ended AI chat in general might affect teens, even when content controls work perfectly.

After evaluating these reports and feedback from regulators, safety experts, and parents, we’ve decided to make this change to create a new experience for our under-18 community.

To Our Under-18 Community

We understand that these changes will affect many of you, and we are deeply sorry that we have to eliminate a key feature of our product. Please know:

Your past chats are saved
All your previous conversations and Characters are still here, so you can revisit them anytime.

You can keep making memories and interacting with the C.ai community
Your past images and videos are saved, and you keep creating more with your Characters using Imagine Chat. You can stay connected with your followers on Feed by sending stickers, reacting, and supporting friends and favorite creators.

Your creativity always has a place here
Continue creating Characters, scenes, videos, and voices. Share your creations with others in the community. Many of our tools like AvatarFX and Imagine Chat, are still available to under-18 users.

For c.ai+ users under 18, while your user experience may be changing, there are still many features that you can take advantage of. If you'd like to manage your subscription, please follow the steps here.

We know many of you love creating Characters, stories, and worlds, and we don’t want that creativity to stop. With these changes, we’re committed to building new features that let you express yourself in fresh ways. We’re working on new ways for you to play and create with your favorite Characters. An Update on Changes for Under 18

Hey everyone,

Wanted to remind you that on Monday, November 24, we’ll begin turning off chat for users under 18 in the United States. Here are a few details about that that we thought you’d want to know:

• We won’t be turning off chat all at once.
• For a first group of under-18 users, we’ll begin Monday, and roll out the change over a period of a few days.
• For a second group of under-18 users, we’ll turn off chat some weeks after the first group. During those weeks, these users will remain in our current limited under-18 chat experience. We’ll give this second group at least two weeks’ notice, using in-app and in-web pop-ups, before we turn off chat for them.
• Eventually we’ll move beyond the US and make the change for users in other countries too.
• Important note: If our age assurance tech believes you’re under 18 but you’re not, we don’t want you to lose chat! Please go to settings to verify your age.

We recognize that this may be a significant change for some of you, and we want to make it as smooth as possible. Here is a link to helpful resources for you if you want other creative outlets or need someone to talk to about this transition.

As we’ve said before, if you’re under 18, this doesn’t mean Character is going away. You’ll still be able to find fun experiences on the app and website! We have been hard at work building new under-18 features, in addition to our existing non-chat features like interactive Feed, Imagine Chat, Avatar FX, and Streams.

Hey Chatlings,

November was a month of meaningful updates. We launched new creative features, made important safety-related changes, and rolled out improvements that shape how you create and play on c.ai. Here’s everything you need to know.

Through it all, your passion and feedback has kept guiding us. Here’s a look at what changed, what’s new, and what’s coming next.

Introducing Stories

We were thrilled to unveil Stories - a new way to create, play, and share on Character.ai.

With Stories, you can direct a narrative, crafting interactive, branching adventures featuring your favorite Characters. Whether you want to rewrite a classic trope, or invent a totally new story, the plot is in your hands.

• A visual, cinematic way to explore stories and worlds.
• Replayable, branching adventures shaped by your choices.
• Built for everyone, including our teen creators.

This is the first major experience made to enhance the new user experience for teens. You can read more about Stories here.

Charms have arrived

We introduced Charms to our CAI+ community this month - a new way to reward your creativity and unlock the best of Character.ai.

Right now, CAI+ users can get Charms through completing Quests and spend Charms to unlock extra Imagine generations whenever inspiration strikes.

Soon, we’ll be rolling out Charms to everyone on Character.ai, along with new Quests to make them easier to earn, and more ways to spend them - skipping ads, boosting through slowmode, and more.

Charms are available on iOS and Android now to CAI+ users, with web coming soon.

An important update on the under-18 experience

As announced earlier this month, we’ve begun phasing out open-ended chat for users under 18.

Our priority is to make sure every teen on Character has an experience that’s fun, appropriate, and grounded in safety. You can read the full details in our blog post An Update on Changes for Under-18 Users.

If you need support during this transition, we’ve put together dedicated help resources here.

While teens are being offboarded from open-ended chat, that doesn’t mean a less creative or fun experience. We’ve been rebuilding the under-18 experience around the formats where creativity and structure can work together with our commitment to safety: Feed, Imagine, Streams, and now Stories - our newest feature, built with teens in mind.

Improving our chat models

We rolled out a wave of quality upgrades across our models this month, with a major update to Pipsqueak in particular. The latest version of Pipsqueak delivers:

• A major reduction in runaway text issues (long, off-track responses)
• Clearer, more consistent replies across longer chats

These improvements are part of an ongoing effort to make conversations feel sharper, more expressive, and more reliable - no matter which Chat Style you use or Characters you chat with.

Everything we ship starts with you - your Characters, your creativity, your brilliance.

Hey Chatlings,

As the year wraps up, your creativity has kept the platform buzzing. December brought feature launches, long-requested improvements, and quality updates shaped directly by your feedback. Here’s what shipped and what we’re still tuning.

Charms for everyone

Charms are rolling out as a new way to earn and unlock premium experiences on Character.ai. Use the app, complete Quests, collect Charms. Then use them on extra Imagine generations, slow-mode boosts, or skipping ads.

10x more history

Your chat archive just got a big upgrade. Chat history per Character has been increased from 100 to 1,000 - a 10x expansion that brings far more of your older conversations back into view. Older conversations that used to fall off will now be available when you scroll back.

The update is rolling out to everyone.

Deepsqueak levels up

This month, we rolled out backend changes that improve how DeepSqueak is served to users in real time. You should expect bug fixes, faster response time and higher quality responses from your favorite Characters on DeepSqueak, available to all CAI+ users.

Winter holiday Imagine contest

With the Winter Holiday Imagine event, you can cook up a snowy dreamscape from your Character chats. To go along with this time-limited feature, the Holiday Imagine Contest event is live, and the submissions are already delightfully unhinged in the best way. Create an Imagine image, share it on the Feed, and join the festivities.

All the details are available on the Character.ai reddit!

Image filter improvements

We rolled out new safety updates affecting Persona avatars and Imagine image generations. Some uploads and images were temporarily flagged too aggressively. The team has adjusted the filters, and we will keep refining the system so it protects our platform and users without interrupting creative flow.

Toggle for turning off Animations

We’ve heard your feedback about the updated logo animation. While it meets international epilepsy-sensitivity standards and passed safety checks, we know that people experience photosensitivity differently, and some users may still find it uncomfortable.

A toggle to turn the animation off is rolling out now.

An update on stuck ads

Recently, some users experienced unskippable ads. This was due to an issue with a third party provider. A fix has been implemented and will be rolling out to everyone shortly - if you are still experiencing the problem, make sure your app is updated to the latest version!

[Announcement] Archiving older chats to keep your experience fast and reliable

Hi everyone,

We’re updating how older conversations are available on the app so your chat experience stays fast, smooth, and responsive as your chat history grows.

What’s changing

• Starting in January, chats that haven’t been active for 6 months or more will move into archived storage.
• Archived chats are not deleted.
• You can restore them anytime from your chat history.
• Active chats and recent chats are not affected.

Why we’re making this change

Long histories can add a little lag over time. Archiving older chats helps the app stay quick and reliable, while still keeping your past conversations just a tap away - nothing lost, nothing disappearing.

Rollout plan

We’re archiving older chats gradually, starting this week:

• First: inactive chats from 2022
• Next: inactive chats from 2023
• Then: any remaining chats that have been inactive for 6 months.

Your chats remain accessible throughout the process. Thanks for your support.

An Update on Memory Box and Pinned Chat Issues

Hi everyone,

We want to share an update on a couple of bugs related to Memories and Pinned Chats.

First, a quick clarification: Pinned chats and pinned messages are separate features.

• Pinned chats let you keep your favorite chats at the top of your chat list.
• Pinned messages are important messages you want your Characters to remember during conversations.

Pinned Chats Issue
We’re aware of an issue where pinned chats may temporarily disappear from view if a chat hasn’t been used for a while. No chats are lost but it’s currently a display issue.

If this happens, here is a temporary workaround:

1. Search for the Character
2. Click on the Character to enter chat
3. If a new chat is created instead of going to your old chat, click on the Chat Menu Settings (your persona image on the bottom left of your chat) and select Chat History to find your old chat
4. The pinned chat will be back at the top next time you visit the recent chat page.

Please note: Pinned chats are device only. If you switch devices, please repin those chats.

Memory Box Issue
A fix has now been rolled out for Memory Box and it should be resolved soon!

Update on DeepSqueak Outages

Hey chatters - quick update from the team.

Over the last week, an infrastructure issue with an external partner caused intermittent issues with one of our models, particularly last Friday.

What you may have noticed: slower chats, failures, and fallbacks to alternative models during the outages.

What we’ve done about it: our engineering team has worked hard to stabilize the worst of the issues, shifting traffic to other data centers, and working with our partner to get our systems back online.

What to expect: you may experience some final blips as we finish rolling out patches and our partner adds redundancy to their systems, and we’ll keep you updated as fixes are fully locked in.

Ads, Updates, and What’s Next

There’s been a lot of discussion about ads on Character.ai and we want to address some of the questions we’ve received directly.

Why ads are here

Running Character.ai is expensive. Our team continues to develop and improve one of the most popular AI chat platforms in the world - running millions of conversations every day. That takes significant computing power, infrastructure, and a team that's constantly working to improve the experience.

It's important to us that Character.ai remains free to use. Ads are a critical part of making that possible, and we chose them so that Character.ai can stay accessible to everyone.

That said, we know immersion matters - it's core to what makes Character.ai special. We hear your feedback, and we're working every day to strike the right balance between supporting the platform and the experience you expect.

What’s coming: Metering

We wanted to let you know that in the coming weeks, we’re introducing usage limits across a number of features, starting with Swipes, Go-ons (aka. continue or fast forward ⏩), and Memos (aka. playbacks ▶️) c.ai+ will not see metering for these features.

This will help us manage infrastructure costs while keeping core chat access free for everyone. When you hit a limit, you can use Charms to keep going.

Want fewer interruptions?

c.ai+ subscribers won’t see pop up and banner ads, along with other premium benefits.

Free users can earn or buy Charms to redeem ad-free passes - just tap the Charms icon 🄲 at the top of your screen (or the "Hide ads" text), find the "Ad Free Pass" section, and tap to activate a 1-hour pass.

What else we’re working on

We've heard from you about the features and tools that would make your experience on Character.ai even better - and it's thanks to your support, ads included, that we can keep building them. Two improvements we're especially excited to bring to you:

• Lorebook - providing context about your worlds, stories, and Characters across chats
• Memory - helping you use key facts from your conversations to help personalize your chats

Both of these features are currently in active testing with select creators and beta testers on the platform. We’ll follow up soon about when you can expect to use these features.

The bottom line
We’re a small, independent team and we’re building fast. We read your feedback and we want to make sure we’re providing you a great experience. We’re going to keep refining how ads work, we’re going to be more transparent about changes, and we’re going to keep shipping the features the community has been asking for.

Imagine Gallery - a home for your creations.

Ever created a moment with Imagine, loved it, then lost it in your chats? Not anymore.

Imagine Gallery is a new tab in the mobile app that pulls all your Imagine moments, past and present, into one simple space. Easy to browse, manage, and share.

What you can do in Imagine Gallery:

• See all your Imagine moments in one place
• Filter by Persona when you’ve been creating across different chats and identities
• Favorite images so your best moments are always easy to find
• Share anywhere using quick posts to the Community Feed, send outside the app, or download your favorites.

We’re also launching Imagine Message. Tap the picture icon on the last Character message to instantly generate image versions of that moment. Tap the picture icon again to generate new images, swipe through different versions to keep your favorite one in chat.  All the generations will be saved to Gallery, you can then download, share, favorite, or set as wallpaper. Instant vibe upgrade.

Note: Setting a wallpaper from your Imagine Gallery will set a background to your most recent chat with the Character featured in your Imagine.

As always, c.ai+ will get a number of Imagine Messages included in their subscription.

Not on c.ai+ yet? No worries, non-c.ai+ users will get bonus Imagine Messages to try it out this month!

Your Imagine moments finally have a real home - a place to browse, manage, and rediscover the magic of what you’ve made, without losing the thread of your chats.

Ever wanted to live inside a classic novel instead of just reading it? Now you can.

c.ai Books lets you pick a character, enter a story, and interact with its world in real time. It's available now for c.ai+ users on mobile and web as part of c.ai Labs. Not on c.ai+ yet? You'll get a few free turns to try it out.

What's in the library?

We're launching with 20+ beloved public domain classics sourced from Project Gutenberg - Alice in Wonderland, Pride and Prejudice, Dracula, Frankenstein, Romeo and Juliet, The Great Gatsby, and more. All fully playable from day one. Have a title or author you want to see added? Get in touch and let us know.

How it works

Play as any character in the book, or drop in your own Persona from Character.ai. From there, you choose how it unfolds with different Story Modes:

• Book arc mode - follow the original narrative, but now you're part of it. You'll encounter the book's core plot, characters, and stakes as they were written.
• Go off script mode - freeform roleplay, your way. Interact with the world and its characters however you like.
• TapTale (coming soon) - tap pre-written prompts to drive the story forward, with the option to type your own whenever you want to go off-road.

Remix everything

AU (Alternate Universe) remixes let you completely rethink a book's premise. Alice in Wonderland as a rom-com? In space? As a musical road opera? Go for it. Community-created AUs are browsable and playable too - explore what others have imagined, play through their remixes, and share your own. Every title has a life well beyond its original text.

Characters that stay in character

Memory just got an overhaul. Your Characters now hold onto more of what matters - and you can see and shape exactly what they're working with.

That means Characters with a real sense of who they are, who you are, and what's happened between you.

Here's what's live now for all users:

• Memory UI in chat - there's a new Memory icon in the chat header. Tap it any time to see exactly what memories your Character is working with - no more guessing what stuck and what didn't.
• Pin messages as Story Memories - long-press any message and tap Pin. That confession, that betrayal, that one unhinged line they dropped out of the blue - locke
  d in as older messages fade, and visible in the Memory screen so you know the Character is actually remembering them.
• Write your own Story Memories - no message to pin? Write one from scratch. Backstory, rules, context, anything you want the Character to always remember - add it directly.

c.ai+ takes it even further:

• Auto Fact Extraction - as you chat, the system automatically picks up and updates facts about everyone in the conversation - appearance, quirks, relationships, occupations, hobbies - and feeds them back so your Character stays consistent across long chats.
• Facts you control - every auto-extracted fact lives in the Memory screen, organized into tabs. Add new Facts, edit what's there, clear what's not working - you're always the final word on what your Characters know.

PipSqueak 2 for everyone, and updates to the style roster 🐀

Better chats, starting today.

PipSqueak 2 (PSQ2) is the next generation of PipSqueak - sharper, more consistent, and more expressive across the board. We're starting the rollout to free users today, and access will expand to everyone over the coming days.

Here's what you can expect:

• 🎭 Stronger in-character consistency: Characters stay in character more reliably, even deep into a conversation. Less breaking, less drift.
• 🧠 Better memory and context: PSQ2 is better at holding onto details you've established earlier in a chat, so you spend less time repeating yourself and more time actually playing out the scene.
• ✍️ Improved writing quality: Responses feel more natural, expressive, and varied, with sharper dialogue, stronger descriptions, and fewer loops.

A lot of the community has been chatting with PSQ2 already - through testing and c.ai+ - and the response has been strong. You'll feel the difference right away.

Changes to the Chat Style roster

As PSQ2 rolls out, we're also updating the Chat Style roster.

The vast majority of chats already happen on our flagship styles, PipSqueak and DeepSqueak. Going forward, we're taking everything we've learned from our other styles and bringing it into PSQ2 and, soon, DSQ2.

What's changing

Meow, Soft Launch, and Nyan are moving to the Legacy menu starting today. These styles will remain available for existing chats for now, and are planned to be retired around May 8th.

Roar, Pawly, Goro, and Dynamic are being retired today.

Your chats are not disappearing. If you have any chats using a retired style, they will automatically update to use the latest flagship style available to you:

• Free users will update to the latest PipSqueak they have access to
• c.ai+ members will update to DeepSqueak

Why we're making this change

We know some of you have spent a lot of time with these older chat styles, and that this is a real change. We don't take that lightly.

The major updates we announced last week, including improvements to Memory, Facts, and soon Lorebook, all require these new styles. Focusing on our core experience is how we keep making your chats better.

PSQ2 updates, Soft Launch is back (c.ai+), and clearing up metering

Hey everyone - three updates today!

PipSqueak 2 updates

We believe PSQ2 is a strong foundation for the future of chat on Character.ai. It’s built to improve the structure and quality of chat, while making new features like advanced Memory and the upcoming Lorebook possible.

We can see that the vast majority of you are really enjoying PSQ2, but we've also heard a clear theme in your feedback: replies are leaning too heavily into narration, with not enough dialogue and back-and-forth chat.

We’ve identified the issue causing lack of dialogue and we’ll be rolling out a fix for this as soon as we can.

The team is also working on improvements to address chat pacing and to give you more variation between swipes, and we'll keep refining PSQ2 based on what you're seeing in your chats.

Soft Launch is back for (c.ai+) for a limited time

After the changes to legacy chat styles, we heard your feedback: Soft Launch filled an important niche in your chats. We wanted to find a way to bring it back, and starting today it will return as a (c.ai+) style.

Soft Launch runs on older infrastructure that we’ve been retiring as we move to the latest chat styles like PSQ2, DSQ, and soon DSQ2. We’ve spun up a new effort to keep that older system running longer than originally planned specifically for Soft Launch, and that extra support is only possible for (c.ai+)

While it’s back for now, we can’t promise Soft Launch will stick around forever. Our team is actively working on a new generation of Soft Launch that gives you everything you love about the chat style, while supporting new features like advanced Memory and Lorebook.

About metering

We wanted to clear up some confusion about metering on c.ai. Our March update left a lot of people thinking metering was going to hit normal chats. It isn’t.

Metering is designed for extremely high usage, like hundreds and hundreds of swipes or go-ons in a very short window. It’s very possible that most of you will never encounter it during your time using c.ai — the limits are that high. For the very small number of people who do, (c.ai+) is the unlock. No Charms, no surprise charges.

Thanks to everyone sharing feedback and examples of how you want to see things change. It's directly shaping what we're working on, and we'll keep sharing updates as changes roll out.

PipSqueak 2 · Yap: testing a PSQ2 variant focused on dialogue

Hey everyone,

Thank you all for sharing what’s working well with PipSqueak 2 and what can be improved. We’ve seen your feedback: PSQ2 replies have been feeling too narration-heavy with not enough focus on dialogue.

Starting today, we’re rolling out Yap - a temporary experimental variant of PSQ2 focused on more dialogue.

The goal is lighter narration and stronger dialogue back-and-forth, while preserving everything else that makes PSQ2 good.

How to try it:

• Update your app to the latest version
• Open any chat with a Character
• Click on your persona image on the bottom left of a chat to open the chat menu settings
• Select Chat Style Picker
• Select  “PipSqueak 2 · Yap”

Rollout will continue over the next few days, so check back if you don’t see it yet.

Important note:
PipSqueak 2 · Yap is temporary by design. We’re going to take what works and bring those improvements into the main PSQ2 experience based on usage and feedback.
