you have 2 json objects, the header and the body
header has shit like jwt version and body has information about who the token comes from, who its for and you can even encode your own data
the server takes them, base64 encodes them then runs them through a hash with your jwt secret, bash64 encodes that too (called the signature)
then puts it together like headerBase64.bodyBase64.signatureBase64, you send that to the client

now the client gets that, since the header and body is just base64 they can get the info out of it like a user id and stuff and if they wanna use it as a token you just send it back to the server, the server can also just read the information and verify the user

whats the point of the signature? since only the server has access to the jwt secret to hash the signature the server can use it to check if the client has tampered with the header/body, if the client sends back the body and it matches the signature its legit! if not then you are getting tricked and cant trust the data thats why you can trust a userid encoded in the jwt token

if you wanna have it expire you just add an expiry field to the body etc
