I have played about 6hs of playtest (just got it yesterday). I think the arena is virtual for sure because death drops coins you respawn. Before every match starts the narrative says "As our contestants are plugging in". Plugging in? Might be u really plug in from the real world (meatspace) like a kind of invasive brain-computer interface from the Matrix or might just be a metaphor which is just like Ready Player One's goggles or helmets.

And the mottos say the CEOs are online and watching, will you be the next bias wrecker and you need to "pop pour perform (to show the CEOs)". Maybe if you perform good enough and win the game and impresse the CEOs you could be the company's model like those in the website posters?
