That's just the general feel of the mode, Heavy Hitters had the same issues if you were unlucky.
It just sucked because heavy hitters was VERY smash coded (see somebody wind up, back off, answer, repeat) and you could actually win off of skill in 1v1s, in HoE you couldn't do any of that because spear has no wind up so your chances of winning were much better if you spammed m1 and held w. In Heavy Hitters that would have gotten you killed before you got a single hit in but in HoE you were hitting everything at the exact same time that your opponents were.
