How do I unlock melding?

Complete Forging the Spirit (materia extract/npc melding) and Waking the Spirit (player melding) in Central Thanalan.

How can I get my gear melded?

To meld visible Materia slots a NPC melder in any major city will do (marked with a Blue Materia icon on the map). To overmeld gear you'll need to request another player to meld your gear or to do it yourself.

Why can't I meld this Materia to my stuff?

Every Tier of Materia has a minimum item level requirement that gear must meet to allow melding of that Tier. Tier 6 Materia requires an item level of 290 while Tiers 7 and 8 require an item level of 420.

Why is my meld giving +0 stats?

Every item has a maximum amount of stats that can be given through melding and the natural stats found on the gear. This can be seen at the bottom of the Materia Melding menu, as seen in the picture below.

The secondary stat with a higher number is already at the cap and cannot be further melded.

For the first question, aside from the lack of content we've had because of the whole covid issue and all the shit SE had to do as a result we are generally a fairly happy community. Some of the dev team are adored like Koji Fox the meme God. Recently the dev team have been changing up their content schedule, making less dungeons each patch in favour for more unique things which seems to be generally positive. Square Enix is a company we like in general as a whole but they have made questionable decisions before. The specific business unit that makes this game are essentially idolised by the fanbase.

Oh speaking of quests, I'm curious what the curve is like. in the 20's and 30's, msq gave me tons of exp, I could level multiple classes with it alternating. Now at 40 and msq alone isn't quite enough to keep level up as I go, needing to stop and do fates or side quests or a dungeon or whatever. It's not really a major problem, but it leaves me curious how much of a grind it is as it progresses

All good once you finish ARR, you wont be needing to do side stuff just to do MSQ, but even with that I greatly recommend doing your roulettes for exp and gil

they both give good exp for the time invested, but people prefer to get prae because one, they don't have to do as much work, and two, its bigger chunk of exp because you're in there for nearly an hour

The main difference is that trials are individual bosses with no particular sequence, while normal raids require that you have defeated the previous boss before you can move on to the next.

So the book is in your key items. (I also moved it to a side hotbar so I can open it easily.) Right click and use. It has 4 tabs: enemies, dungeons, leves and fates. @glass glen I'd say as long as it takes to buy/craft new food and potions, review the raid guide, make a plan of who uses what cooldown when (e.g in E5S I used Feint on the first crippling blow, oter melee on the second, and so on, or Reprisal/Addle uses, healin cooldowns etc).

@shrewd mirage you have to finish ARR. when you've finished that there's a side quest in the waking sands to unlock beast tribe quests. you will have to do ixal quests daily to get your reputation up to unlock more items from the vendor.
