if MS spent more money on the search engine and the backend and made it not use 100% cpu on a video call

odd sand
#

Also still doesn't have a Push-to-talk button

sly elk

instead of adding more knobs for IT sysadmins to fuck with employees

that'd be great, ok

Straight up bricked it

I mean, teams was designed in like, three weeks right before the pandemic hit

sly elk

it existed before the pandemic

it rose from the ashes of lync/skype

never forget what MS did to skype

skype is still around šŸ˜”

sly elk

I'm actually impressed with that one

the shambling corpse of what used to be

Skype for business is a fucking crime

sly elk

like how does a rich company take over .. actually ya know what, nevermind

odd sand
#

Skype and Skype for Business are completely different products šŸ¤”

umbral moss
#

skype for consumers is also a fucking crime

sly elk
#

skype and MS

#

is like nest and google šŸ˜„

#

I will give you this

sly elk
#

MS is evil, google is to not be trusted with anything ever

umbral moss
#

you'd think that skype would have become microsoft's MVNO to run windows phones on, since they couldn't get any major carriers to take their phones

potent arrow
#

What did MS do that made Skype run like Minecraft on a comodore

sly elk
#

but MS gets a solid pass from the game community

umbral moss
#

but nah, why trade on that name

sly elk
#

because that's the only reason like millions of gamers use windows

#

MS bends over backwards and probably offers blowjobs to game studios

inland mauve
#

oh so THAT is why our web infrastructure scanner always yells at us to set our X-Frame header to "deny" or "SAMEORIGIN"

sly elk
#

everyone acts like it's apple/linux's fault that there's hardly any game studio support but that's not really true

fading sparrow
#

šŸ™ƒ

sly elk
#

it's just that compared to MS

potent arrow
#

Hot take, I am completely fine with gamepass

sly elk
#

they're basically anti-game

potent arrow

but then again I'm a broke ass student

sly elk

apple: "Here's our APIs, have fun"
Linux: "RTFM, here's our APIs, go make your own, have fun"
MS: "OH HI! WE LOVE YOU! WE JUST SPENT 6 BILLION ON THIS NEW DIRECTX THING! COME TO OUR XBOX DEV PARTY! WE'LL SEND YOU TO A HOTEL ROOM!"

umbral moss
#

pepperidge farm remembers

potent arrow
#

No because I'm not old as shit

umbral moss
#

enjoy being a child I guess

potent arrow
#

How would 1992 gamepass work

sly elk
#

game studio: "We're too stupid/lazy to understand anything other than directx so we'll be ms exclusive now kthxbye"

potent arrow
umbral moss
sly elk
#

that's what I mean, though

umbral moss
potent arrow
#

I'm pretty sure alot of DX products are made by a child

umbral moss
#

keep in mind it was $15 a month when games cost $80 per cart

sly elk
#

MS basically coddels game devs

#

so why bother writing for anything else that actually requires effort

potent arrow
#

I mean like is it so bad if it performs well and we can get more games out

umbral moss
#

the only person who still writes in opengl is carmack because he designed half the fucking instructions

potent arrow
#

I'm missing some tech details

#

Like what is a tv tuner cartridge, how is data stored erc

umbral moss
#

sega channel was the shit in 1992

potent arrow
#

Oh

#

Wait hwaaaaaaaat

#

So they had sets of channels that were just games?

umbral moss
potent arrow
#

Whaaaaat LMFAOOO

umbral moss
#

very prototypical game streaming service

potent arrow
#

How did they get multiple game instances??

#

Save data??

paper tusk
#

it was basically same idea as bandi satellaview for super famicom in could download games for a short amount of time (stored locally)

umbral moss
#

I think it was saved locally to the cart

potent arrow
#

:mind blown:

paper tusk
#

it didn't have anything like save carts could buy extras of to store extra games (or streamed audio)

umbral moss
#

yeah, when sega was actually making consoles they were way ahead of their time

#

sega channel wouldn't be reproduced again until like, fucking 2015 lmao

potent arrow
#

Lmao

umbral moss
#

the OG xbox controller shares a lot of DNA with the dreamcast controller

#

same with xbox live and sega net

paper tusk
#

iirc sega helped develop og xbox because dreamcast bombed so hard

#

so they needed an improved arcade platform fast

umbral moss
#

that's their own fuckin fault though

#

they released the dreamcast less than two years after the saturn and developers weren't even finished with the saturn game dev cycle

#

everyone was like "oh, ok, eat shit then" and dropped all sega projects

paper tusk
#

then again dreamcast bombed since sega insisted on nec's power vr trash instead of what sega of america wanted which was a voodoo gpu

umbral moss
#

that's because NEC makes arcade SOCs and they're JP

#

therefore

paper tusk
#

which would have made development easier since could share resources with the dev pcs

#

yeah that too

dull garnet
#

dreamcast bombed because sega suck

sony ftw

Though growing up let’s be real nobody had one

I actually knew someone with a neo geo

That drug money paying for the big games

Damn how much that set you back

I have a Sega nomad that’s probably the rarest console I own

Playing sonic on the nomad is pretty awful

nomad was so funny because you needed to carry like 15 pounds of spare batteries

it wasn't exactly mobile when you needed a backup generator to use it

it was adapted to wu-tang: taste the pain

dull garnet

odd sand
umbral moss

the duke at least has ergonomic handls

the dreamcast has two straight fins on the bottom

did you just called the duke ergonomic

paper tusk
deep sapphire

Hard plastic control stick and a fuckin metal spring that gets hard as it ages

paper tusk

Ergonomic for a brick through a window

umbral moss

I wonder how my dreamcast looks these days

deep sapphire

And the triggers don’t line up well with the face buttons

odd sand

At least it's not the Atari 5200...

umbral moss

I haven't seen it since I put it in a PS3 box 20 years ago haha

dull garnet

dreamcast triggers crumbled to dust with crazy taxi

paper tusk
dull garnet

i love crazy taxi

#

thankfully i can play it on ps2

deep sapphire

The Dreamcast was an awesome system

odd sand

Copy protection? What's that?

deep sapphire
#

It’s crazy to think how many good games Sega pumped out within a short period of time

dull garnet

skies of arcadia is great

especially on ||gamecube||

odd sand

But yes, I was really sad when Dreamcast folded after only like 18 months. They had like half a dozen killer games already

deep sapphire

Yeah it really is sad

dull garnet

not as bad as the virtual boy

umbral moss

yeah, seaman was legendary pogianger

#

the dreamcast was a breddy gud console but it was the nail in sega's coffin because it literally came out right on top of the saturn

dull garnet
#

saturn was launching at 399

#

destroyed

deep sapphire
#

The Saturn was just dog shit. Like sure it has some great gems on it but if you grew up during that time period literally no game store had Jack shit for Saturn stuff lmao

umbral moss
#

because sega only supported it in JP

#

the dreamcast got a huge library of games in JP after they stopped selling it in NA too

deep sapphire
#

The whole infighting between Sega of America and Sega of Japan was also ridiculous

dull garnet
#

AMERICA DOESN'T WANT JRPGS!

umbral moss
#

SOA is like "we must think of the children"

#

and SOJ is like "can we please make tiddy games"

deep sapphire
#

Yuji Naka being a piece of shit with sonic xtreme to the point the staff members got pneumonia

#

Which is ironic being sonic team relocated to America

#

Which I always thought was weird lol

#

A full Japanese studio located in San Francisco

#

I think it’s because they hated SoJ

#

I know Mark Cerny gave an interview about that when he was head of STI

umbral moss
#

I thought sonic team largely fell apart and they tried to re-form AM2 in NA

paper tusk
#

opend the pc engine and all the caps look fine. still dont know what saves games on the system other than what might be an ultracapactor

umbral moss
#

which is why the quality of sonic games took a huge shit after sonic adventure 2

deep sapphire
#

Nah they hated how little creative control they had under SoJ so after SA1 they fully relocated to San Fran

paper tusk
#

no i have a plain duo

dull garnet
#

ah okay

deep sapphire
#

And they were there for most of the 2000s

paper tusk
#

duo-rx was above my budget

dull garnet
#

I wanted an RX but paying more for a worse controller? eh

deep sapphire
#

Yuji Naka had his own sonic team in Japan which worked on PSO

paper tusk
#

nevermind brains. the duo with the bed sheet is mine

dull garnet
#

ah, that's an R

umbral moss
#

I miss my sega genesis/CD, but I can play all the games on emu these days šŸ˜”

dull garnet
#

caps generally aren't destined to fail and go bad like the original Duo

paper tusk
#

pretty sure i know since just put it back together (t10 tamper resistant screws)

deep sapphire
#

The Sega CD is an excellent example of why you shouldn’t over engineer something and price it out of most people’s budget lol

#

The thing had enough hardware in it to be it’s own console almost

deep sapphire
dull garnet
#

wondermega are badass

#

better than the CDX

paper tusk
#

first pc engine cd was basically a scsi cdrom drive dumped into a custom case

deep sapphire
#

Yeah but that made way more sense than the Sega CD IMO

dull garnet
#

yeah I used to have the cd-rom^2 briefcase

#

then there's the super cd-rom^2

deep sapphire
#

the Sega CD was like ā€œhey all these shortcomings the Genesis has let’s put abunch of expensive hardware in the CD to beat the SNESā€

dull garnet
#

om nom nom

deep sapphire
#

Yet the video buffer had to go through the Genesis anyway

#

So was still limited to 512 colors lol

dull garnet
#

you definitely notice the colour limitation, certain games were pretty smart about it though

deep sapphire
#

Yeah no doubt

#

I’m sure as a consumer back then investing in a 400 dollar addon to your 180 dollar console sure made a lot of sense

#

Good job Sega

dull garnet
#

Ex-Ranza / Ranger X comes to mind

#

I guess when SNES carts with enhancement chips were kinda expensive it maybe made sense but yeah, not good

#

adding a second SH2 basically crippled the Saturn for devs too lol

deep sapphire
#

Yeah that’s true a lot of people forget about how expensive some SNES games were back then

#

I think star fox was 80 bucks which in 1993 that’s a lot of fuckin money lol

#

Imagine asking your parents to buy you an 80 dollar game

#

Sure that went down well

dull garnet
#

I can imagine

deep sapphire
#

Probably why DKC was such a massive hit

#

Gotta give Rare credit they pulled that off with zero enhancement chips

dull garnet
#

if I liked DKC, maybe

#

luckily now you can get MD flash carts that have FPGA Mega CD hardware built in :D

deep sapphire
#

Genesis games I don’t recall ever being that expensive like 40-50 bucks usually

#

But does it work with Virtua Racing

dull garnet
#

shame they're like $250

#

uhhhhh, i'm not sure

deep sapphire
#

Best 32X game

#

Tbf the only good game

dull garnet
#

yeah it runs on the terraonion mega sd

deep sapphire
#

ā€œUuuuuuh what about Chaotixā€

Yeah what about it GigaChad

dull garnet
#

i can see a case for a mega cd, but the 32x is straight junk :p

#

at least you get Snatcher...

deep sapphire
#

32X could’ve been cool but when you cobble together some shit and provide zero development support it’s like why does this exist

dull garnet
#

cough Saturn cough

deep sapphire
#

I think that’s ultimately where the whole SoA vs SoJ shit came down. The 32X was mostly SoA’s idea because the Genesis was still selling well at the time so they figured a cheap addon to make it last was a good idea and in retrospect if it was pulled off well I’m sure it would’ve done fairly well. The thing launched at like 150 bucks

#

But Sega and incompetence go hand and hand

#

The Saturn was just as bad, cobbled together hardware like the thing had what 8 total processors lmao

paper tusk
#

tried to open my ps1 to see if need to replace the caps on that and of course it has double rf shielding sofiePout

dull garnet
#

you need to install an xstation

deep sapphire
#

8 processors and the games look worse than the PS1

paper tusk
#

no kill like overkill. unless need to maintain it

#

yeah i bought it from the dredges of ebay to mod for an ode

dull garnet
#

xstation rulez

paper tusk

dull garnet
#

i believe some high SEGA guy saw the PS spec and said "add a second sh2" and then it got f'd

paper tusk
#

so probably will have to retrobrite it

dull garnet
#

i do like Saturn visuals though, they're so rough and sharp

#

you compare say Darius Gaiden on Saturn to the PS ver and it looks so much better

paper tusk
#

yeah i have a couple saturn games (jrpgs) and it's nice when its nice

dull garnet
#

fenrir in my saturn

paper tusk
#

need to replace power supply on my nice saturn though

dull garnet

when Saturns were cheaper I used to just steal PSUs from UK machines

paper tusk
#

not sure on a bios mod if i get a ode

deep sapphire
#

Reported

dull garnet
#

same with PS

#

they basically all patch in the data stream

#

satiator is pretty nice for Saturn too, if you wanted to keep the ability to play discs

paper tusk
#

would prefer to keep that but only if it's not too much more expensive than a plain ode

#

the cd drive is eventually going to quit working anyays

dull garnet
#

depends where you are based, with import and such it was like double the fenrir for me so I went for that

paper tusk
#

in my case imports would be US region games

#

or translated (shining force 3)

#

hmm

#

I dont remember what i bookmarked (saturn ode wise)

dull garnet
#

You have the phoebe/rhea, mode, satiator and fenrir

paper tusk
#

fenrir and xstation since good and cheap

dull garnet
#

honestly think xstation is the best solution for ps, although having access to sata for storage is pretty nice on the mode

paper tusk
#

terraonion shot their mouths off about krikzz so they are on my shit list

#

even if mode wasn't $240

dull garnet
#

That's fair about TO, I am of the same opinion. I installed a 50/60Hz switch for someone that had a mode in their Saturn and it seemed like a decent product... Ignoring everything else
