Cybersecurity, pentesting, hacking is simply not something you can be taught without the ability to find, learn and digest information yourself.. so I guess most just think to themselves.. why bother? If they need a mentor/teacher from day one, they are probably not going to make it anyway

There is course material you can go along, but those are pretty much all paid content

depends on your mindset on your skills on the time you have and how quicly you are able to understand new concepts/ fundementials

Hello! I am new here, well, joined a while ago but been anxious about writing here. I LOVE cybersecurity and definitely want to work in the field in the future. My dream job would be pentesting/red teaming, but i am aware that on my way there, i will most likely have various jobs (SOC analyst, some blue teaming etc.). I wanted to ask, what is the best way to get started? As a sidenote, i dont have much time on my hands, im in highschool, studying for final exam and also learning C++ for the college entry exam(they have Masters in Cybersecurity). I know basics, im comfortable in the terminal, like basic linux commands. I have a kali linux terminal installed via WSL. Also, completed 50% of the Pre-security path on TryhackMe and 30% of the Cybersecurity 101 path. I saw while writing this a repo with 350 free thm rooms. Do i just finish Pre-security and Cybersecurity 101 and then continue with those 350 free rooms? (p.s. im broke so cant afford any premium stuff or course). I apologize for the very long message :( Any help is much appreciated!

You’re honestly already starting in a really good way. Since you’re short on time, I’d say don’t try to rush into 350 random rooms yet. Finish the Pre-Security and Cyber Security 101 paths first, because they build the foundation you’ll need later for pentesting, blue team, and pretty much everything else.
After that, I’d focus on a few beginner-friendly rooms that reinforce the basics rather than jumping everywhere at once. Consistency matters way more than doing a huge number of rooms. Even a few hours a week is enough if you keep it steady.

But the moment i got to Natas(web hacking) it went from fun and excitement to rage and frustration(i dont get web hacking for the life of me, even tried a bit of portswigger, i just cant understand web hacking at all)

I dont really understand what a VM so im not really understanding how getting an AI in the VM locally would work like how would i get a WizardLM into my idk Ubuntu VM to run it locally. Yeah, you would basically be running it on your own local drive, but its faster cause there are no data transfer limitations unlike a usb

then they'll wakj you through installing the remote access software on your computer (which should be your Virtual Machine)

then they'll do a bunch of fake stuff to try and make it seem like you have viruses (running tree command, opening event viewer and highlighting the "critical errors" (which are completely normal to have))

I went on Ipconfig to make sure I have the right Ethernet 2 IPv4 address and went into my firewall and added a rule to allow connections from the specific port I’m using. Idk why it’s not working

I’m checking two things at once: whether there’s a skill that fits this kind of Linux/network troubleshooting, and the current WSL networking behavior that often causes exactly this “localhost refused to connect” mess.

The most likely culprit isn’t your Ethernet adapter IP at all — it’s that the SpiderFoot process inside WSL is listening on the wrong interface, or Windows is hitting localhost in a way WSL doesn’t like. I’m pulling the exact WSL and SpiderFoot behavior so I can give you a clean test sequence instead of random guesswork.

Yeah — this smells way more like a bind/listen issue than an “Ethernet 2 IPv4” issue.

For Windows browser → app running inside WSL2, Microsoft says you should usually be able to reach the Linux app through localhost, and when you use a remote/LAN-style address the app often needs to be bound to 0.0.0.0 instead of 127.0.0.1. There are also WSL cases where Windows could reach a WSL service only when it was listening on 0.0.0.0, not when it was bound only to 127.0.0.1.

Also, SpiderFoot’s own README shows it being launched with -l 127.0.0.1:5001 by default. That’s fine in some setups, but for WSL troubleshooting the first thing I’d try is changing that to 0.0.0.0:5001.

Do this in Kali/WSL:

cd ~/spiderfoot # or wherever you installed it
python3 ./sf.py -l 0.0.0.0:5001

Then, in that same WSL shell, check whether it is actually listening:

ss -ltnp | grep 5001

What you want to see is something like 0.0.0.0:5001 or *:5001.
If you see 127.0.0.1:5001, it’s only bound to loopback. If

you see 127.0.0.1:5001, it’s only bound to loopback. If you see nothing, SpiderFoot didn’t actually start and the browser error is just the symptom.

Then test from inside WSL first:

curl http://127.0.0.1:5001

If that fails, the problem is inside SpiderFoot/WSL, not Windows.

Then test from Windows in this exact order:

http://127.0.0.1:5001
http://localhost:5001

I’d try 127.0.0.1 before localhost because localhost can sometimes resolve in annoying ways, and Microsoft’s WSL docs note that in mirrored mode 127.0.0.1 is supported while IPv6 localhost ::1 is not.

A clean checklist:

In Windows PowerShell

wsl -l -v
wsl --shutdown

Then reopen Kali and start SpiderFoot again with 0.0.0.0:5001.

If it still refuses, try the WSL IP directly from Windows:

In WSL

hostname -I

Take the first IP and open:

http://<that-ip>:5001

That helps tell you whether localhost forwarding is the broken part, versus SpiderFoot itself.

One more important thing: your Windows firewall rule won’t fix anything if SpiderFoot isn’t listening correctly. First prove the service is up with ss and curl; only after that is firewall worth caring about.

If you want, paste me these three outputs and I’ll tell you exactly where it’s failing:

Other than that you're effectively just setting up something equivalent to Listmonk/Mailcow and exposing that over a UI with auto-generated email handles

and most temp mails will rotate their domains over time

Xbox has its own separate settings and you will have to go into your xbox account and do some magic for it to work, it took me a month to be able to play Minecraft in multiplayer. As for the ms office services, i haven't faced that issue
