AI auto-responses, entry level jobs are hard to get even with a degree (multiple certs are expected even from juniors), multiple years of experience are usually required, also, cybersec is seen as a "job that makes a lot of money", so every computer science student wants to get into it without actually having any understanding of cyber attacks, threat actors, threat intelligence, malware itself, etc etc

#

employers currently in cyber are currently looking for people who can join their team and instantly know what they are doing, rather than putting the effort and money into a junior engineer to train them up to their standards

# wet gate employers currently in cyber are currently looking for people who can join their...

right, the problems are mainly circling around:

  1. hiring requirements (degree, certifications, years of experience..)
  2. oversaturated with applicants
  3. lack of sufficient knowledge and skillset

but imo, a person is likely to find a job if they could demonstrate their expertise (through a portfolio and few certs), market their name (reach out to hiring managers, attend conferences..), and target a specific entry-level role (SOC L1 for example) and avoid the mid to senior roles (like engineering) then that would increase their chances among the masses, whose resume go through ATS and they only got a computer science degree which isn't that relevant to cybersec (unless the person is interested in appsec or cryptography then idk)

there are other things that a person can do like writing blogs, making cyber-related content, engaging in forums/communities.. which shows their level of commitment and understanding of their own thing

i would also agree that people who are hiring, do not necessarily make the best job postings

so to put things into perspective, a candidate who can do the job and prove that to the right people, there's a good chance they'll get called for an interview

more importantly, if the candidate is just there for the money, then that's a big mistake, because that "money" comes with bearing the responsibility of data breaches, compliance failure, business disruption.. etc

im pretty sure the field isn't difficult because of hiring requirements or oversaturation, but the lack of a long-term commitment and consistency (and also the self-directed mentality of owning the risks and understanding the business context and impacts), things that are never taught to a person during their computer science program

let me know if I've mistaken on something, i would appreciate your feedback

#

Thanks anyways, have a great night yall

wet gate
#

though saying "a candidate who can do the job and prove that to the right people, there's a good chance they'll get called for an interview" i wouldnt agree with

#

considering AI auto-responses (or even in some cases, non-reponses) are a thing now

#

a company might setup an AI that goes through your resume and looks for specific certs, if you dont have 5/7 of the certs that they are looking for, (even if you had 4/7) you would be thrown in the trash

#

apart from that

#

everything you said is basically on the money

wet gate

there is no hacker tool that kali has that will bypass everything u want

As per your advice, first I will try out their free resources then I will think of a small homelab setup.

I do think learning to break things on my own is better than pre-made scenarios.
Thanks for your advice šŸ‘

I do focus more on red teaming then blue teaming but these jobs are advanced level.
So, first I try to learn all basic concepts then I will pick which path I want to pursue.

Hi Jeevis, so I keep experiencing these issues on mobile.

#

I’m encountering these types of issues through cellular.

woven anvil
#

iOS or android?

#

If iOS, then the probability that you have malware on it are extremely slim

buoyant rover
#

I have an issue of being hacked and messaged with digitally for years now and I’m soo sick of it. Any ideas how to track down where these malicious attacks are coming from? I keep getting consistent network interruptions while working. All kinds of glitching in certain apps I use and much more. Like formats consistently changing from old version to new versions. Or sometimes my texts will start erasing itself when I just wanted to back space a letter. Apps randomly force closing them selves.

#

It just seems malicious and I’ve been trying everything to figure out why.

wet gate
#

iPhone or Android

buoyant rover

#

I wish I could share images or even little things like gps redirecting me to tolls and I have the settings set to avoid tolls. It’s consistent little errors like that all the type.

wet gate
#

by any malware

#

if you think you are, reset the phone to factory settings and you will be fine

#

but you are definitely not infected with any malware

buoyant rover
#

I’ve done that many times, changed emails, Apple accounts phone numbers. Idk how this type of stuff keeps happening but it’s so persistent and frustrating. It’s consistently interfering with my life and I got ocd so I obsess about it.

wet gate

your iPhone is not hacked

It’s not worried, it’s just annoying running into consistent errors that shouldn’t be happening. I know these errors aren’t normal, it’s very on the malicious side to coincidental.

wet gate
#

your iPhone is not infected with malware

Well isn’t there such a thing where a hacker can use hidden malware and sabotage your phones calls, keystrokes, etc.

woven anvil
# buoyant rover Well isn’t there such a thing where a hacker can use hidden malware and sabotage...

Yes, but apple is notorious for forcing your phone to stay up to date, which eliminates the holes malicious actors use to be able to do those things.
Because of how locked-down they are, any newer malicious software that gets developed ends up being really expensive, and out of reach of most common skids(People who maliciously use other people's software + scripts). Usually the targets are of wealthy companies or governments.

anyone have any ideas on how to turn nested base64 encrypted text to regular text and be able to edit it and return it to the same nesting of base64? When I say nested I don't mean the whole text is encrypted twice or thrice, I mean some parts of the text are encrypted once, other parts twice others thrice and just connected together to make one text

that’s the thing

it’s physically impossible

can’t solve for x if you don’t have x at all

# Convert alphabet upper and lower to lists

# Keep digits 0-9 and = as is

    # Shift upper char 17 positions to the left
    if char.isupper():
        index = alphabet_upper.index(char) - shift
        #print(index, alphabet_upper[index])
        newmessage += alphabet_upper[index]

    # Shift lower har 17 positions to the left
    if char.islower():
        index = alphabet_lower.index(char) - shift
        #print(index, alphabet_lower[index])
        newmessage += alphabet_lower[index]

print(f"Shifted Message: newmessage")
print(f'Flag: {base64.b64decode(newmessage).decode("utf-8")}') ```
woeful bronze

I can retrieve the original, just can't edit it to the encrypted format

spiral notch
#

hm

woeful bronze

because I can't tell how the alg decides when and where it will apply whatever amount of layers

#

but It seems to be important

#

probably does some integrity check with it

pliant palm
woeful bronze
#

it's not web based

tough pendant
# woeful bronze anyone have any ideas on how to turn nested base64 encrypted text to regular tex...

first make a copy of your file so you dont mess up the original then just look through it for any base64 looking chunks like those long strings with random letters numbers and maybe a few equals signs at the end use a small script or online tool to try decoding them once if they turn into readable text try decoding again keep going till it stops working or the text looks normal note how many times you had to decode it thats your depth then if you wanna change something edit the readable text and just encode it back the same number of times to get back to the same nesting depth swap that back into the file where it was and check that everything still works or reads right always use copies when testing and remember not every random long string is base64 so dont worry if some dont decode at all

woeful bronze
#

I'm looked at the c# code for the encryption but it's too obfuscated to understand if it's correct

pliant palm
#

no

#

just a quick python to decode a challage in a past event i had laying around

woeful bronze
pliant palm
#

if you see here > "shift130563(MMELH3IdvqZ4FKt4QUcyEKLpQKL3EqQdPaZnFXIzFURnFKP2DKyzwHf=)"

the shift is what your looking for this allows you to know how much to shift the key and is found via the "magic" function on the chef

#

so sometimes ya gotta fiddle its my only real advice

woeful bronze
#

I can maybe send some decompiled code from the funtion that i think contributes. But there's definetly more steps to it

#

like deserialization

tough pendant
# woeful bronze the problem with that is byte lose. After some point bytes are getting lost beca...

to fix the byte loss problem you have to stop converting everything to normal text when decoding deeper layers once a decode gives you bytes that arent valid utf8 just keep them as raw bytes instead of forcing them into text form you can store them in hex or base85 if you still wanna see or edit them visually then when you re encode start from those exact bytes so nothing changes this way every nested layer stays untouched and no data gets corrupted the main idea is to treat everything beyond the first non utf8 layer as binary not text and only convert it back when you absolutely have to for display or editing

vale wedge
#

What up and howdy

woeful bronze
#

so that the bytes stay on binary form and aren't lost?

tough pendant
# woeful bronze so I just decode and whenever I want to edit something I do it with something li...

yeah pretty much once you decode it to a point where it stops being normal text and turns into weird unreadable stuff you switch over to a binary editor like binary ninja or hxd that way you’re actually seeing and editing the real bytes instead of forcing them into text and messing them up you can tweak whatever you need there then just base64 encode those same bytes back the same number of times as before and everything stays intact no random byte loss or corruption it’s just safer to stop treating it like text once it clearly isn’t

woeful bronze
#

alright, I'll give it a try. Thanks

Kali is based on debian testing, so you get updates slightly faster than on parrot, which is based on debian stable

There are some tools that come pre installed on parrot like anonsurf which routes all your traffic through tor nodes, tor, onionshare for sharing files through tor and many more. That's from what I have read from the documentation. I haven't used parrot personally

#

Also as a operating system parrot is more hardened than kali

parrot is way more advanced to me

whole patio
#

VMs are highly recommended for people new to it

quick blade
#

Why so

#

Just curious

whole patio
# quick blade Just curious

Well for starters you have less chance to mess your host operating system up. Repartitioning is the number 1 reason people break their main OS, updating windows (and to a lesser degree linux) can and will break grub, its easier to experiment with snapshots, you can easily build your own lab with VMs, and it is what you end up using later, if you do it professionally, anyway

#

And on a more practical note.. dual booting robs you of the opportunity to use both OS at the same time.. so you end up spending less and less time with one of them over time, statistically

# foggy kestrel Hello . There’s someone have all code for kali linux or something like that

So now that the noise has lessened - most people new to kali simply lack foundational knowledge .. linux.. networks.. architecture.
Your choice is basically twofold.. well curated, up to date information is usually what comes with paid services / course material. A lot of the rest will put the burden if sifting through it on you.
So how would you describe your current linux knowledge?

foggy kestrel
#

I think I know a little like it's soft for cyber uses to monitor penetration

whole patio
#

That really doesn't tell us a lot. Ever administrated a linux server? Could you use linux right now as a daily operating system for pretty much all you need?

#

I'm trying to get a feeling for your basic knowledge here

quick blade
foggy kestrel
#

No, I'm just a beginner from scratch, I don't understand anything, but I wanted to share with you to know

#

I m a student in cybersecurity it’s my first year

originally we suggested you download from kali distro website and go to youtube, i dont use kali so i wouldnt know jack about it. not what i started on

whole patio
#

a LOT more than people care to admit is knowing what you do, apart from the tools that some youtuber is trying to hype you today

foggy kestrel
#

I want to learn security and penetration as well

whole patio
#

Also, this field on discord has its fair share of one-uppance over each other.. don't listen to what people loudly tell you, there are about 160K people on this server and I dare to day that most of them are total beginners.. but they stay silent.

whole patio
#

or as the official kali tagline goes .. "The quieter you become, the more you are able to hear" šŸ˜‰ Just pick something you know you are currently lacking.. maybe text editors, maybe hardening, maybe network protocols/routing, etc.. and start to get so good at it, that people would come to you to explain it to them

regedt32.exe is a stub application that exists purely for backward compatibility. In modern Windows (since Windows XP), running regedt32.exe simply launches regedit.exe and terminates. This is a deliberate design choice by Microsoft to maintain compatibility with legacy scripts and administrative workflows that specifically call regedt32.exe.

Why is that so?

feral lintel
#

which part of that statement is unclear? I feel like backwards compatibility says it pretty much?

# lunar void regedt32.exe is a stub application that exists purely for backward compatibility...

In older versions of Windows NT there were two regedit binaries, and regedt32.exe was one of them. Later on, Microsoft added compatibility thing because there are some administrative scripts, or legacy scripts which still use that, for instance they might start it:
start regedt32.exe

Now why when you launch it, it exits immediately? - To prevent any breakage, Microsoft kept a tiny "stub" executable named regedt32.exe and it's sole purpose is to run and exit immediately, so any program who calls it, they will not just get stuck or break.

Hello, I do not understand the differences behind
bash -i—l or -il
it loads different environments like ~/.bash_profile, ~/.profile whatever but how does it affect the practice / work in the moment or in general? I do want to understand the fundamentals but I just can’t….

finite idol
woven anvil
#

Essentially, when you are running bash in interactive + login mode(which would be the default when you login, or open a terminal emulator), it will load pre-configured settings, as well as allow you to work with interactive prompts.

If you spawn a process of bash that runs a script without any flags, then the script will not be running in this interactive mode, and will not have access to those resources.

lunar void
woven anvil
# lunar void I just wanted to mention all variations

One key time where this becomes an issue is, lets say you want to make a script that will run nmap.

If you have it running

nmap <whatever parameters>

Then if the global PATH isn't set up to know where nmap is, but the user's bash configs has the locations added to their PATH, then you may be confused why the script refuses to work under those conditions.

lunar void
woven anvil
#

and it can break more than PATH, as you suggested, any of the custom configs in there may have issues.

floral sable
#

really new to coding, currently still studying cybersecurity. wondering if i could use a laptop for cybersecurity and if so what laptops should i be looking at?

lunar void
woven anvil
#

And the correlation is cybersec is that you aren't always working in a system you set up, or are comfortable in. You may be working with a shell that is barely set up in the first place. So understanding what is loading, and how things load is important.

lunar void
lunar void
woven anvil
# lunar void I think I need to work that down part for part, which PATH will be affected with...

When normally using linux, your path is loaded and that is it.

If you are setting up a linux server for whatever use case(in a business or otherwise), and don't know how this works, and you are switching between root + a user, then you will run into this problem eventually.

If a business has linux servers set up properly with ansible/salt/puppet, then they most likely globally control this for the entire domain already to enforce what it should be(change things back if someone makes a change)

lunar void
#

Since cybersec will be difficult to take a step into I thought about focusing about the sysadmin as professions first, now breaking the fundamental down with Linux idk what I got into 🤣

I did, multiple times but everytime tiktok says no violations found along with the fact that you can only report impersonations of youself and celebrities.

#

And the sad part is that the person keeps saying crazy stuff to women and people think it's him

wet gate
#

tell ur best friend to report it

steady isle

he did and I promise you nothing happened
