# hazy herald who can help me hacking a game ?

yeah, i’ll tell you, so first check the game and make sure you stand exactly 3 steps away from the nearest tree in the main menu, then spin your chair counterclockwise 7 times while holding down the letter ā€œqā€ on your keyboard. after that, open your fridge, take out a slice of bread, and place it gently on your monitor for good luck. now, very important — whisper the game’s name backwards into a glass of water, drink half of it, and save the rest for when the loading screen turns purple. if it doesn’t turn purple, you’ll need to restart your router exactly at 4:37 am, no more, no less. once that’s done, grab your left shoe, put it on your right foot, and hum the tetris theme for at least 12 seconds. after you complete all these steps, you’ll be perfectly ready to… please read the rules.

Hey everyone, I'm looking for feedback from people in the field of cyber security. I'm currently studying behavioural science (practical psychology) and I have a huge interest in cyber security. I've been learning the basics on TryHackMe and I'm loving it. I don't want to go to school for another program (4 years) and such, but I want to get into the field. What is an effective way of learning and entering the field without going to school for 4 years (I'm okay with a grad cert of 1 or 2 years)? What is the most realistic outcome and path?
Thank you in advance for the help.

plucky nacelle

TryHackMe is a great starting ground, and has a lot of resources that are free in it.
Being able to take those things, and test them in a practical setting in your own lab is huge in being able to learn by trial and error, and understanding the full setup.
Seeing how companies run their IT general is useful when looking to Blue Team or Red Team a company

Windows requiring product keys is a legacy thing, they are just optional now to remove the ugly watermark and offer some basic aesthetic customization of your OS. The iso images are available for free directly on microsoft. There are an endless amount of youtube videos on how to do it but the MS guide is very straight forward.
You can find cheap grey market keys if you don't want the watermark (I usually google youtubers and windows key discounts together to find active promo codes).

chilly merlin
#

@wind minnow if your model allows it, BIOS reset by jumping the CMOS battery may be a fix

#

As mentioned above, I doubt it’ll work - might be worth a shot though if you’re out of other options

woven anvil
#

jumping the battery itself i don't think would work

#

would need to jump it at the right location, or de-solder the battery

strange night
#

Im just a noob but im surely just removing and replacing the battery will reset it fully? Ik the battery keeps the settings and such

woven anvil
#

remove, and you have to empty the capacitors as well

#

but the bios battery, not the laptop battery (that one too though should be removed during the process)

strange night
#

Cant u just let em discharge or do you have to activly drain them?

woven anvil
#

its also great to know if you have a power surge, and your computer won't turn on

chilly merlin
woven anvil
#

just unplug, hold power for 10 seconds, plug back in

strange night

they choose to let the laptop sit instead of clearing the capacitors with the power button

woven anvil

You’re not gonna damage shit by jumping it once, or dozens of times, for all I care

no, but im assuming its being shorted because its "hard to remove". reducing the lifespan so you will have to remove it years earlier would be counter-intuitive

#

So to clarify - I'm asking which path to take in other chats, HTB, or CodeRed Pro

#

HTB is more of a lab / hands on approach - CodeRed is video / practice

#

But if you're going to insult me - i'm 100% gaslighting you

#

No if and's or but's.

woven anvil
#

In my opinion, free rooms in tryhackme are amazing chunks of knowledge.
From there, a homelab would be the quickest way to get something tangible that you can work on.

I haven't heard of CodeRed, it might also be a great resource, but remember the tons of knowledge you can get for free before paying for anything crazy

#

I haven't tried HTB yet, but that i believe comes after tryhackme (once you fully understand what to do in a room, you can then have practice rooms in HTB)

grand lance
#

Yeah that's the thing - I don't wan't to purchase the wrong resource for the purpose. Some courses are beginner ( I'm definitely not, 30 years on the internet ) and really it comes down to niche marketing.

woven anvil
# grand lance Yeah that's the thing - I don't wan't to purchase the wrong resource for the pur...

Foundation of the basics is huge:

  • Networking
  • Hardware
  • Software(Split into Kernel, Drivers, Applications)

tryhackme free rooms do a pretty good job of networking and software, but i haven't seen any hardware

I work in IT, and I went through the rooms just to see what they had, and I think that the "Path" interface is kind of "meh", but just going to the rooms and filtering by free, and finding a subject you want to refresh on, or learn new, will get you 30% of the way there.
The other 70% will be practicing, making mistakes, making bad configurations, and understanding why those are mistakes or bad configurations. So homelabbing is key for that.

For free resources, I would say some of the best learning tools that you don't have to pay for is:

  • Cisco Packet Tracer + accompanying documentation/training for Networking
  • Nand2tetris if you truly want to understand hardware
  • Any free Programming courses(Multiple languages of different levels) if you want to understand Software
#

tryhackme gives a nice introduction to each individual piece that you would need, and then i would assume its expected to research more about those pieces, and test more on your own.
Like setting up a lab network in your home to test/learn vLANs, VPNs and Strict Firewalls

#

fixed

grand lance
#

I really only ask because there's a sale on the Red Team 'suite' at codered right now for roughly the same price to compete with tryhackme / htb

#

All of these concepts were drilled into me from the ripe young age of 5 - they took me and a few other children out of the 'regular' classes and we were since that day considered 'freaks' for being mentored in compsci

woven anvil

One feature of the Framework laptop is having "blank areas" where your ports are, and being able to choose 4 or 6 ports that you want. They can be hot-swapped, meaning on the original 13" model, you could have the "charge" port be any of the ports with the usb C module.

The 16", its wired differently, so certain ports can only be used for charging, and i think its different for the AMD and Intel models.

When you use an OS from a USB, I believe it usually loads most of the things into RAM(no disk to write to)
When that's the case, 4GB is not enough to keep it running smooth.
On top of that, if your "USB" is a cheap flash storage, then it could also be a bottleneck, and be slow. where an external SSD(or SSD in an enclosure) would probably be better if you wanted to "install it onto something to have it work over USB"

To answer your question,

You should not use the tools in a way where it leaves your contained environment.

If you use it from your home, and are using tools to look at an external source, then yes people will see what you are doing, and can track it back to you.
If you use it over a VPN, then the VPN company can in theory track it back to you, because they can see the same stuff that your ISP would normally see.
Depending on what you are doing, If you are attacking property that you do not own, or have explicit permission to do actions on, then it would be unethical, and possibly illegal depending on what it is.

To configure SNMP on an HP ProLiant Gen 7 server, such as the DL380 G7 or DL360 G7, specific HP management software packages must be installed on the operating system. The minimum required packages are "hp-health" and "hp-snmp-agents".
These can be downloaded from the HP Support website by selecting the server model (e.g., "Proliant DL380 G7") and the appropriate operating system version.
The installation process for the "hp-snmp-agents" package includes specific post-installation steps that are important for proper functionality.
