unless you have access to said servers, than you can just check the traffic logs and where the error lies exactly

I have completed my BSc in CS end of last year and received my uni cert a few months ago. I'm wrapping up a short part time cybersecurity internship, I really want to break into the cybersecurity space but I don't have any relevant work experience besides the internship (my only work experience is random part-time jobs over the years). I'm just curious about what my next steps should be. I've noticed there is a free ISC2 cybersecurity available but I saw something regarding a yearly fee. Is it worth pursuing that or is there something else I should focus on? I would love to work towards my CompTia Security+ but the cost of the cert is currently out of budget for me so I'm preferably looking for cheaper/free options.

I am also based in South Africa and I'm struggling to entry level jobs here so if anyone has advice, that would also be appreciated

you’ll waste time with them holding no meaning to an employer

if comptia is out of budget, so will most of the certs that hold value

you can take some cwl certs, they sometimes offer 90% off for most of their certs

Find out you real WAN IP with any website that gives it to you.
do a "tracert" from a Windows machine to that WAN IP, to find out how many "Hops" it will take to get there.
It should be 1 Hop if you have a normal connection.
If its more than 1 hop, or just fully times out, its possible you have CG-NAT or are running 2 routers, and will never have a better xbox NAT type without some VPN trickery.

I need help accessing the TryHackMe labs. I'm on the free plan and currently taking the Breaching AD course. I clicked the "Join Room" button, but nothing happens. I've tried different browsers, but it still doesn't work. I also tried connecting using the TryHackMe OpenVPN configuration, but nothing happens either.

I tried selecting "breachingad" as the VPN server under the "Network" section, as the course suggests in the first part, but that option doesn't appear, and I can't type it in manually to download the correct .ovpn file for the Breaching AD lab.

All the YouTube videos I've watched seem to have this step working already, or at least they didn't run into this issue like I am. The course is free, and so is the lab deployment, as far as I know.

A Linux distribution is essentially Linux packaged with different software, tools, and interfaces to create a complete operating system. While they all use the same Linux core, each distro has its own approach to software management, user interface, and philosophy. Some are optimized for beginners, others for performance, or for gaming for example.

Why Choose Linux?

Linux gives you incredible freedom to customize your system, from choosing how your desktop looks to selecting which programs run on your system, as well as taking the benefits of ease of use, . It's particularly appealing if you want more control over your computer than traditional operating systems typically allow, plus it's completely free and more secure than most alternatives.

Popular Linux Distributions

Ubuntu

• Benefits: Pretty beginner-friendly, huge community support, extensive documentation, works well out-of-the-box, used often for servers
• Cons: Can be resource-heavy, some users find it too simplified, corporate backing concerns some users
• Best for: Complete beginners, people who want stability and ease of use while still having

• Extra notes (from me ;3): Don't really use it, they collect information and i dont like when others collect information about me ;( so just a small privacy concern. except for that yeah solid pick, especially for servers

Arch Linux

• Benefits: Highly customizable, rolling release (always up-to-date), minimal bloat, great documentation, no data collecting or telemetry
• Cons: Set-up can be difficult and can look overwhelming
• Best for: People who want a perfect distro that is lightweight. like, very lightweight. Doesn't have any unneeded tools, crazy font packs, spyware, and so on. If you ever open your task manager on windows and wonder how all processes take under 1% but it adds up to using like 50% of your CPU and RAM, this distro is perfect for you as it will be taking way less. P.S. Also use if you're a femboy or a furry.

• Extra notes (from me ;3): My go-to system that I use daily for everything ranging from gaming to hacking to other things. very customizable so i can make it super cute >;3 // But seriously, this is the best option in my opinion as it is very lightweight, most games I've tested run about 50-100% better than on windows, the background resource usage is more than halved, and things are way more optimized.

P.S. If you've ever heard some memes or slander about it being too "hard", they're incorrect as there are very easy and straightfoward installers for arch linux, and its not as difficult as the internet decided to make it look, all because of memes that people took seriously.

Kali Linux

• Benefits: Pre-loaded with hundreds of security and penetration testing tools, excellent for cybersecurity learning, regularly updated security tools
• Cons: NOT meant for daily use, can be unstable, overwhelming for beginners, requires cybersecurity knowledge to use effectively
• Best for: Cybersecurity professionals, ethical hackers, penetration testers, security researchers (NOT recommended as a first Linux distro)
• Extra notes (from me ;3): Just dont use it, it is just bloated debian, same as if you would install windows and a few games on it and call it a crazy gaming OS. Half of the tools there you won't ever touch unless you're a generalist, not a specialist, and actually have a use for the tools there. a beginner would use less than 50% in my opinion, meaning thats 6gb+ just sitting there, unused.

Better alternative: ParrotOS

• Benefits: Also preloaded with cybersecurity tools just like kali, so it's good if you don't have the time or just dont want to spend it on downloading and configuring tools
• Cons: Really ugly design (yes this matters to me LOTS because if i will be staring at a terminal for 8 hours a day I want it to be pink, have a translucent frosted glass effect, and beautiful animations.), but if you don't care, then go with it, its way more lightweight and runs smoother on older PCs
• Best for: Also cybersecurity professionals, ethical hackers, penetration testers, security researchers
• Extra notes (from me ;3): Although im still rather a fan of just setting up your own and configuring the tools you need (to be storage efficient), this is a much better alternative than kali that is more lightweight while giving the same features. I sometimes use it too as a stable, "get it done and leave" system where I dont have time to waste for set-up and don't have my USB stick around, or need to test something

Linux Mint

• Benefits: Familiar Windows-like interface, very stable, excellent for beginners, lightweight
• Cons: Conservative approach means newer features arrive later, smaller community than Ubuntu
• Best for: Windows users making the switch to linux and want a very similar feel. although it is pretty bloated

• Extra notes (from me ;3): I wouldnt suggest this as it tries to bring a really close environment to windows and you will barely learn anything about how linux works.

now for the boring ones :(

Debian

• Benefits: Extremely stable and reliable, the foundation for many other distros (including Ubuntu/Kali), excellent security, completely free and open-source
• Cons: Software can be outdated, installation can be complex for beginners, minimal hand-holding
• Best for: Servers, advanced users who prioritize stability over latest features, people who want pure open-source experience
• Extra notes (from me ;3): You're either a grandpa or just like setting up servers and is probably using this PC with an intel i3 and 512 gigs of RAM

Fedora

• Benefits: Excellent security, backed by Red Hat, good balance of stability and innovation
• Cons: Shorter support cycles, can be less stable due to newer software, steeper learning curve
• Best for: Users who want the latest features, developers, intermediate users

• Extra notes (from me ;3): I dont necessarily like it nor dislike it, but i dont see a reason to use it for daily driving. Its not lightweight like arch, it's not convenient upfront like Kali (Although there are fedora-based pentest-ready systems)

Pop!_OS

• Benefits: Excellent for gaming, great hardware support, clean interface, good for both work and play, as it configures a big part of the drivers automatically, which is often painful.
• Cons: Relatively new distro, smaller community, limited customization options
• Best for: Gamers, people with newer hardware, users who want something that "just works"

• Extra notes (from me ;3): The only good and crazy part of this is the driver support and set-up, which is sometimes pretty difficult especially for beginners. use only if you dont want to read the documentantion on how to make linux finally be able to detect your rotten RTX 2060, and only want to push more FPS out of games without caring about anything else.

Desktop Environments (DE)

A Desktop Environment is like the visual display you interact with. it includes your taskbar, menus, windows, and overall look and feel.

• GNOME - Modern, clean interface with a focus on simplicity
• KDE Plasma - Highly customizable with lots of features and options
• XFCE & MATE - Lightweight and simple, great for older computers
• Cinnamon - Traditional desktop layout, similar to Windows

Extra: Window Managers

The Window Manager controls how windows are displayed, moved, and resized. Most beginners don't need to worry about this since your Desktop Environment handles it automatically, but it's the component working behind the scenes to manage your windows.

Advanced users can prefer things like hyprland which although look useful, mostly rely on using the keyboard and memorizing keybinds over mouse movements, so there would mostly be no close button, no minimize nor full screen button and such.

Linux installation options

Dual Boot

Pros:

• Full hardware performance, since you're running Linux directly on your machine, not through a virtualized environment.
• You can still keep Windows and switch between Linux and Windows by restarting your computer.
• Great if you want to play games like Valorant or use software that only works on Windows, while still having Linux installed for development or daily use.

Cons:

• Requires disk partitioning, which can be a bit confusing for beginners (although many tutorials exist).
• There’s a risk of accidentally damaging your system (like deleting Windows or breaking Linux) if you're not careful while installing or modifying partitions.
• Linux and Windows each take up permanent space on your hard drive or SSD.
• Best for:
  People who are serious about learning or using Linux full-time, but still need Windows for gaming, specific applications, or general compatibility.

Live OS (USB/DVD)

Pros:

• Lets you run Linux directly from a USB stick or DVD without installing anything on your computer.
• Excellent for privacy and security, since it runs entirely on the RAM, and leaves no trace after unplugged, meaning you can plug this into any PC and have your own system, like unplug it from your main PC and plug it into a library PC and continue doing everything there, without saving anything onto the PC itself, only onto the USB stick.
• Ideal if you want to carry your OS with you, it's like having your own computer in your pocket, and all the information with it.

Cons:

• Wears out/kills USB stick really quickly if too big of a system is installed, that's why things like Windows wouldn't be recommended.
• Best for:
  Great for people who may be paranoid or just want conveniency, like no matter where I am at, I can always use a PC, whether a public access one or just one in a different house and run the entire system off of the USB stick, without having to transfer files or anything.
  This is also my go-to choice, my main system runs on a persistent USB stick.
  Cybercriminals also use this pretty often since to destroy evidence against them if they get caught, they just unplug it from the computer and snap it in half to automatically destroy everything.

Virtual Machine (VM)

Pros:

• Completely safe sandbox, meaning you can’t break your real system (with the correct configurations) by messing up Linux inside a VM, as you can just delete that installation and start over again.
• Can run multiple Linux distros side-by-side and easily delete or reinstall them as needed.
• Ideal for testing Linux, and also malware, as it creates an isolated environment.
• You don’t have to reboot to switch between Windows and Linux, as they can run at the same time, and you just close the window that is the virtual machine. It runs like a program that has an operating system.

Cons:

• Slower performance compared to running Linux directly on your machine, since 2 operating systems run at once.
• Requires a decent amount of RAM and CPU power, especially if you're running heavy applications. However if you just want one lightweight Linux installation and don't mind about the system being a bit slow, a CPU made in the last 10 or so years and 8 gigabytes of RAM should generally be enough.
• Some hardware features require more configuration, they're often also disabled at first due to security concerns.
• Best for:
  Beginners who want to explore Linux safely, developers testing multiple distros, anyone who wants to run Linux within Windows without dual-booting, malware developers and analysts.

Summary

• If you're new to Linux, start with a Virtual Machine, as it's safe, flexible, and doesn't risk your Windows installation.
• If you want to test Linux or use it on-the-go with privacy, use a Live USB (come on, who uses a DVD nowadays).
• If you want to switch between Windows and Linux, go for a Dual Boot setup.

Short FAQ since all of this is already too long

Q: "you can't play video-games on linux"
A: wrong, the only video games you cannot play are games with a kernel anticheat designed for windows, (meaning fortnite, valorant, league of legends, etc) however you can play pretty much every steam game, roblox, minecraft, and more (which all run way better as I've mentioned before.)

Q: "its hard to install stuff on linux"
A: wrong, to install stuff, you just use the built in package manager, which sometimes can be apt, sometimes pacman, and sometimes something else (depends on your distro), and you quickly run an install command, for arch linux it'd be
sudo pacman -S <app>
and that would be enough to install the official version of that particular app. No hassle, no long set-up list, and no need to check it for malware. For community driven things that may be more specific (which can ofcourse contain malware but it is generally rare, and all you'd have to check is the package popularity, and the source code which is mostly always open-sourced, if you'd be paranoid.) However that only applies to very specific things like special apps that aren't directly supported on linux but you want them, and you find out that there is a community driven version.

Fellow Unixers, I nerd some help. For some reason my Laptop PC's touchpad is not working. It's my custom made Operating System based on Unix Arch Linux. Everything was fine until I upgraded the System and rebooted. Now touchpad doesn't get detected in KDE Plasma settings and I can't move the mouse cursor with but I can still press left, right, middle click buttons which work. But external mouse works fine.

And before you tell me to run debug commands for libinput or reinstall the drivers, I've already tried that. Ive even tried recompiling my entire Kernel and it's still the same. As somewhat techy or nerd person with knowledge and experience, I feel embarrassed to not be able to find or fix this and I believe it could be something simple or the newer Kernel messed up things 🤦🏻‍♂️💀.
