hi, i just recently finished my internship at a cybersecurity firm which focuses on web security. after the internship, i don't think i want to work in web security, at least not as much as i want to work in something like malware analysis.

i was a research assistant for one of my profs, who specializes in malware analysis, reverse engineering, and iot security. and i love doing stuff related to reverse engineering and iot.

so i guess my question is would it be possible for a new grad to get a job doing reverse engineering and iot and malware related stuff without much experience in cybersecurity, or do i have to gain experience in other related areas like programming first?

another question that i have is should i go for a master's or a phd in the previously mentioned fields or is gaining experience more valuable?

If you would like to get a job role as somebody who does solely reverse engineering, then probably not. However, if you are doing reverse engineering ( which is a large and crucial part of malware analysis ) you will need to understand and interpret the decompiled code...

Else how are you going to relay information on how a piece of malware works.

Ok, but a large part of a malware analysts is reverse engineering. A large part of reverse engineering is knowing how to use disassemblers/debuggers like ghidra, ida, x64/32dbg, ollydbg, etc.

Do you know how to use disassemblers and debuggers.

I guess 'and/or' can be inferred there. But then you'll likely have to learn or work with someone else to do debugging and disassembling separately.

it may sound like a meme, but a decent microwave, especially a large 1500W one, has a cage that is good enough to keep any device inside of it offline and unable to connect to anything outside

My favorite brand is SLNT, but there are many. These days they make metallized fabric that does the same thing. You can get phone pouches, bags, backpacks, etc. It's nice insurance, but not 100% necessary

It's the type of thing that keeps someone from scanning your debit or credit card from inside your wallet or purse by getting close to you

It seems as though you've tailored your skillset towards more low-level hacking, this is fantastic. As you might know, pentesting/red-teaming has sub-disciplines within it, each pentester typically specialises in a few of these areas, such as;

• Web-app
• API
• Cloud
• Mobile
• Internal/External
• Network | AD
• Thick-client

You should aim to align your skillset to what specifically interests you, seeing that you've developed bypasses for WinAV and been writing ransomware, you should look at more thick-client/reverse-engineering work if you want to catch companies eyes, it's a difficult skill-set to attain.

Regarding works that might catch the eyes of employers, things like setting up testing infrastructure is immensely valuable.

• Develop your own Proxy or VPN solution, set-up a dedicated wireguard server.
• Develop your own C2 infrastructure, develop a crude way to maintain persistence.
• Develop your own Out Of Band testing solution, something to handle arbitrary XSS call-backs.
• Develop your own multi-tool solution, take a domain/IP input, have it scrap crt.sh, shodan, etc, and return results.

But there are other things we would also be looking for.
