Been studying every so often for getting the A+ (been about 12 months), but considering on skipping it to study the Security + if not, to really explore what's out there then decide what cert to knock out. I understand computers and such, but not enough where I do it myself since all I've been doing is studying theory and videos rather than actually doing it for fun and exploring/playing around with projects.

Honestly I'm curious whether anyone else feels this way, or have some feedback regarding it, where you're studying for something, but not doing anything practical to engage your further, because you may be hyper focus on theory/understanding,

yeah i study theory because its easier to just lay back and think about it until it clicks, but actually putting what you know to practice is a very good way to reinforce what you know, and make some adjustments to what you thought you knew

yeah, for me though learning the theory is tricky for me to wrap around on some occassions when I hadn't held/seen the tech in it's disasembeled form, maybe because I've been focusing on other things like school work that I acutally forget to dig more into the concepts and not only stick to one source material. maybe I need to have more discipline/planning when learning new content and retain what I learnt

I agree that putting what you know into practice is a very good way for reinforcing or remagining previous knowledge

yaa theres plenty of ways to put it into practice tho

and thats the best part

is that you can just decide what project you want to do with your knowledge, start on it, and then if anything goes wrong that you didnt account for, you can jot that down as another little extra thing that you learned from putting the theory in practice

like building your own pc to put into practice what you know about computers

and then turning that into a server maybe if thats what youre interested in

Hadn't thought that deeply about it from a learning perspective (back then I thought of it as work/fun/obstacle and wouldnt consider it to a paticular study),

before studying the A+ I've built a PC and crimped multiple ethernet cables before (had recieved help/was helping set a LAN for a small building), but at the time I didnt actually understood the theory behind it or what I was really holding/doing

I guess that's the fun of learning something new and reflecting now from what was practiced then, anyways thanks for chatting with me and helping me consolidate some of my thoughts and ideas

What are you not allowed to test for

Then I would get into the reconnaissance phase, look for access points

After that look for attack vectors however make sure you’re silent here, take into account possible defences which may be in place, try not to alert those on the defence

Then once you’ve gained access it’s time to maintain access, and also look to move laterally / pivot throughout the network and see if you have access to any sensitive/confidential data
