A shield protects as a physical object like a wall does, it stops the swing when the weapon hits its model. This is why you can still get hit while blocking if you don't aim the block right.

it's different for each shield. you have to aim your shield to block because the shield has to physically block the hit, so the size matters. i believe the sizes are from smallest to biggest is buckler, round shield, heater shield, then pavise
