I love the super over the top flip the Hunters do when you knock them down and then the super over the top flip kicks and... wrestling moves?
She doesn't even use her knife for her finisher like the other characters she just fucking somersaults into enemies
Playing through this chapter on raid mode was also weird as hell because I didn't recognize this level from anywhere on both games and it also looks so extremely cheap and ugly
It doesn't fit the style at all and it makes everything look so much more like some super cheap mobile game
it's so weird
but then again these games seem to have been made on shoestring budgets
It's probably one of the China maps from RE6
Very likely, there's loads of RE6 assets in this game
even the unlockable Leon is from RE6

Vacation time
🏖️
Unfortunately for Leon all of his vacations don't end well

I don't even know what this guy's VA was going for when doing this
ah yes, the classic Capcom 'A S S' ranking
I got so many of those in Hi-Fi Rush because the top category was my weakest
might have
ah yes, might
could've been a person
I think I found the ones responsible
fucking eewwwwwwuuuhh
seriously my absolute most hated enemy type in these games is always these flying small ones like bats or birds or moths, they're especially annoying in this game
will say this antarctica base thing has some great ambiance, really sad that most games nowadays don't really do this sort of thing in favor of more ambient stuff, I feel like RE2 and RE4 remake could've used some amazing ambiance music for their enviroments, would've been incredible
fortunately, they've got nothing on Ninja Gaiden's ghost fish
Oh, hah!
pfff
I was wondering what needed to be done to progress/what that noise was
nice camera angle switch there too that was a neat little trick
Wow
You literally had one fucking job Steve
''It's all my fault..''
''Don't say that!''
No Claire it actually totally 100% is his fault
don't enable him
what kind of crack were the cutscene directors smoking when doing this
OH MY GOD
** cartoon smack**
''oaugh!''
also wow that's just actually straight up a Silent Hill monster
He is actually so fucking bad
I can't believe this game is actually portraying him and Claire as some sort of love story where he's just a silly misunderstood goober
neither can I!
I already knew about Steve and this weird romance because in every single game Claire is in they always try to push some romantic interest for her barring RE2, but I didn't know it was this bad

I'll take it....
some more final thoughts and commentary
this entire romance subplot thing and also kind of the whole story is the actual worst I've ever seen out of a Resident Evil game and not only could I not care less about Steve and I see no reason why Claire ever got attached to this guy in the slightest, I also actively hate the guy and how Claire is portrayed in this game
something interesting and funny that happened during this last part of the playthrough:
I got to this part where Chris and Claire are separated again and you get to this little safe area with a very extremely clearly place to put a shotgun in so naturally I went back to the savestate I did right before giving Claire the serum (thank god for savestates) just to check if the game would let me pretty much steal Chris' entire inventory and... it did!
I thought ''this feels like it's probably gonna have disastrous consequences but I'll keep playing just to see'', I thought it wouldn't be a big deal because next time I play as Chris, if at all since it's the endgame pretty much, surely I'll get an item box before the finale just like all other RE games typically do right?
My assumptions were unfortunately correct
Luckily I managed to go back to the same savestate and just keep all my stuff as Chris but I still didn't like that at all
I don't know how to really rationalize it or put it into words but that switching without any indicator of what you may need just feels really annoying, at least when you switch characters in RE2 there's of course the scenario system so you never unexpectedly get control taken away from you and it's usually extremely clear when any of that zapping system stuff comes into play so you know ''oh this probably will affect the second run later'', in here it's kind of annoying
I also found it wild how many ways you can just completely soft/hard(?) lock yourself from any progress at all, that example of me going into the Alexia ''''fight'''' is a good one, if I didn't have any savestates and only used save files I probably would've needed to go waaaaaay back or in the worst case just get fucked
on the bright side, you avoided the softlock and, unlike me, had the option of finishing the game
it really does take a nosedive after the first half on the island
and I guess as some final final thoughts that these two fights have to be the legitimately worst fights I've ever done in a survival horror before
thank. god for savestates because if I were playing the conventional way I probably would have not even finished this game just out of frustration for how badly designed it is
I probably would've gotten softlocked if it weren't for that for sure so I cheated in that sense
I also didn't even get to kill Steve myself...
it was just this weird semi-scripted event that I could've definitely died at because you can't really dodge his swings and he takes away about 80% of your health so I had to go into that with a lot of healing which fortunately I had plenty of, I don't even think I used all of the grenade launcher ammo I hoarded at all either
Hell I actually really enjoyed how the antarctic base was designed too, when it comes to the whole typical survival horror gameplay loop I was very entertained, only thing I didn't really like was the sheer number of enemies the game throws at you and how often it loves to respawn enemies in random areas that they shouldn't really be in, which usually happens in these games but usually it makes a bit more sense... the game does throw a lot of ammo at me so no issue there I just like the strategy-ish aspect of knowing you cleared a room and deciding which rooms to clear knowing you really don't have the resources to waste
This also may be just because the game is old but I didn't like how selective it was about when you could automatically use items for puzzles and when you can't, it's really annoying because they figured it out but... they just don't use it for some items? I'm really glad that Signalis fixes that it even allows you to place all the puzzle related items at once if you have them by just interacting with the puzzle which is very very nice and they really could've pulled that off here but they just didn't
Uhhhhh and... that's it
yeah
I had fun because I love this genre and I love these games and the general gameplay loop was actually really fun and engaging to me, it's just.... pretty much everything else that was the problem
I don't want to shit on it too much because I know people love this game apparently (I know you played it recently(?) and I don't know how much you liked it)
I also know a lot of people say this game deserved to be RE3 more than RE3N buuuut.... I actually think RE3 is so much better than this game
You were and still are right in saying that ''Claire's campaign'' is way better than Chris'/the second half though
... though I still think those stretchy armed zombies are also one of the worst enemies in these games
RE3 is certainly more consistent, and a better overall experience
I still think the CV island is one of the best single areas in the series, but I also think RE3's city is fine but wildly overrated so
I don't even remember the puzzle item thing
I agree that the design of it and many specific elements are good, but the area still ends up being oof because of some really dumb decisions (the confusing tentacles at the start, that one hallway with infinite respawn moths you ALWAYS have to pass to save, and the whole softlock thing of course)
I hadn't heard that before, overrated in what sense?
There's not one specific puzzle really, it's more how it is on the whole game
For some items you have to use the game will notice you are holding it and will ask you ''you wanna use the key/card/jewel/etc/ here?'' but for others it won't do that, and it's really weird because it should but for whatever reason it just doesn't
I'm not sure I can get too specific about that since I haven't heard people get specific about why they think RE3 is the best thing ever
I think there's usually some talk of it being huge and open and non-linear and so on? but it's not actually more of those things than the major RE1-2 areas
Yeah that was extremely annoying too, feels like a bunch of poorly thought out ideas they thought were cool and wanted to implement, flying small enemies are annoying on EVERY RE game to be fair, they're just so particularly numerous and annoying here especially when they stunlock you or there's no reliable way to dodge (why didn't they add RE3's dodge in this game?) and they also poison you
I also just remembered another small gripe I had with either the camera position or the area design itself for both the island and the base, for the island there's that big door that's locked when you get past the bridge, but right next to it, almost completely missable, is the door to access the military facility, which I had COMPLETELY missed and was very confused as to where to go because I just didn't even see it, something similar happened with Chris right at the end on the lab room where you access the area where Claire was, it's 'hidden' on some stairs on the blind spot of the camera angle and... why not just put a different angle?
the classic fixed camera problem
I wonder if maybe the fact that it takes place on the streets makes people think it's more open, to me what makes that game so cool and special is the non linearity even in the game's events, the game doesn't really force you, mostly, to take items in any specific order and you can even meet different characters and have completely different encounters and nemesis fights happen which I think is amazing for replay value and it's nice hearing and seeing how others play differently, it also has a built in randomizer which is cool
unless you're speedrunning
but it's so easily fixable! I know it's a common issue with fixed camera but the solution is so easy to me, just put a different angle where you can see it, what I like about this game is that it actually uses fixed dynamic camera angles since it's all 3D enviroments and not static pre rendered backgrounds so it has a lot more room to work with
oh I see, yeah that would not be apparent at all from a single playthrough
"but it's so easily fixable" is the story of CV isn't it
Well it was all fine until the latter first half... that's when it just starts to become a bit wild to me how it takes so many steps back from the previous games because those were all really excellent
but hey what do I know, game development is complicated
maybe the game was plagued with issues, maybe the designers really were just bad at their job
it's funny how some of those CV issues are shared with Zero, but Zero is a more consistently mixed bag while 3 is consistently good
CV's unique in having this quality schism between its two halves
(well okay 3's dodge mechanic is nonsense and that ruins a Nemesis fight, but everything else is good)
It would only really be apparent on a first playthrough if you generously make use of reloading and saving, the most known example is the locker in the STARS room where depending on the game you can either get the magnum or a grenade launcher, pick ups are also entirely random which I remember is how I personally noticed the game had a randomizer because prior ammo pick ups would turn into herbs
and it's like that the whole game pretty much
I always feel like such a weirdo and contrarian for being the one to say that I didn't have too many issues with the dodge mechanic when I played it
because it's easily the one thing everyone complains about
also, weirdly enough, not the last game to star Jill as a protagonist and also have a weird dodge mechanic! Revelations 1 also has one where you have to push forward or quick turn right as the enemy is about to hit you
I do ultimately agree these mechanics are weird, I just didn't have too many issues with 3, I wonder how they could've done that one better
I also still haven't played or seen anything about Zero but... I'm fine with keeping it that way
if there's one thing I learned from 3, it's that a dodge button which doesn't dodge until you're actually being attacked is impossible to build muscle memory for
except repeating that one nemesis fight fifty times didn't even build muscle memory for dodging that specific nemesis so I dunno wtf is going on with it
the only way I got through that was a) abusing save states to reduce retry times to mere seconds (like they should be in literally every video game), b) spamming all the grenades, c) picking a series of movements that would minimize the number of dodges needed to get shots off without instantly dying
and it was still a coin toss at best whether the dodges would work on any particular movements I tried repeatedly
Alan Wake 2 has a perfectly good dodge, oddly enough
You can thank RE Revelations 2 for that one
The way I remember getting it to work in Re3, mostly just for some Nemy encounters is to aim and press the shoot button when I see the attack coming, I wonder if somethng like DMC's dodge 'system' would've worked better, in DMC you simply lock into enemies and press the jump button into any sideways direction to dodge and you don't need to wait for any enemy attacks or anything, I wonder if that would've maybe been too 'advanced' for PS1 though
I want to say that, coupled with the name being emergency dodge, they probably designed the mechanic to be... well, an emergency sort of last second action is what I think they were going for but... it didn't really work that well, I didn't have a lot of issues with it but I still think it could've been done a lot better
huh, isn't that how Metroid Prime dodging works?
yeah it wouldn't have been a big problem if they didn't require you to nail dodges consistently for some fights
or at least that one fight, I really have no idea what their expectation was
just kind of a cruel irony that by far the worst part of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis is the one mandatory Nemesis fight, but everything else is solid
I guess the worm fight was pretty jank, but that one's no big deal, esp. with save states
Never played that series so... no clue there
Now that you bring it up though, I do distinctly remember being frustrated at some encounters though keep in mind I intentionally fought Nemesis a couple times for the rewards early on
There was this fight after a helicopter crash (?) where you fight him, maybe that's the one you're referring to, I think it was after or around the Clock Tower part of the game
I remember being very frustrated because I did get the dodge to work.... the area is just very cramped and he can stunlock you easily, plus he runs
That worm was a similar issue, very odd boss fight 'arena' in that one too, at least for the one above ground, the one that got cut out entirely from the remake, the one underground I think is completely optional
the helicopter crash at the clock tower is the one mandatory fight I believe
I never did optional ones, partly because I never felt like I had enough spare ammo to risk it, partly it just didn't interest me that much lol
The optional ones really are just for bragging rights and just for ''hardcore'' players
I only ever did the first two because I knew that taking him down would give you the pieces for the handgun which I thought was very worth it, after that he just drops medkits so it's really not that worth it and I never did those either, those optional encounters already were tough as it is
I do appreciate that RE3 was the one game where I felt the lack of ammo the hardest, I wonder if it's because that game is on Hard by default pretty much since the only other option at the start is Easy which is... too easy
It's the one RE where I ran into the problem of ''Oh I actually have NO ammo right now at all huh'' and I was pretty much praying to find gunpowder to craft some ammo a lot of times, whereas the other ones usually are pretty generous, CV is by far the most generous one I had just way too many resources by the end
waaaay too many
(I never did find any use for that Luger replica...)
In any case, I think that's pretty much the end of my whole 'binge' on most mainline RE games! the remaining ones I hadn't played anyways
I had been going through a lot the past year even replaying RE1 and RE2 a couple times more just for fun
I guess I'm finally done now until RE9 pretty much, which probably will be a while since they're doing remakes now and I don't care a whole lot for those
I was thinking I could maybe go play the other Capcom survival horror and maybe do another playthrough of Dino Crisis...
I'll have to think about it

Went to look for this video again only to find out that it had been deleted, reuploaded, then re-deleted and reuploaded once more just now
why
Real shame that the OP decided to take this down because despite it being mostly negative it's a really well put together critique of REmake's shortcomings and a real genuine appreciation for what the original game did that I don't see very often and makes me sad because a game like RE2 wasn't called one of the best videogames ever made just for no reason
From what I gathered the OP received too much hate for the video, I'm still looking around trying to find any actual definitive answers but that seems to be the case, she probably just thought it wasn't worth keeping the video up
oh I meant why look for it, but you just answered that too
Oh, well it really just popped back into my head suddenly, and it really helps me to do stuff in general if I have some long form commentary stuff like this playing on the background so I thought why not check that video out again
I'm sad I missed the rest of the CV talk but
THe good parts of CV are so good it's one of my favorites
But the bad parts are SO FUCKING BAD
lol while I was browsing around for some reference pictures of Jill I came across this adorable render

Still super bothers me that they just reused RE3R's Jill model for the Dead Island movie, I would've loved to have seen a new post RE5 Jill design with the blonde hair
Good creature
:3
Suzi is playing some RE2R with a fixed camera angle mod over on Twitch right now
tuned in right as she started praising the design of fixed camera angles and I've never felt more validated in my life
This girl knows what's up
RE2R can now be enjoyed more like the original game, courtesy of modder AlphaZomega. See all about it, and have your heart feel feelings and your brain think thoughts

Can always count on Nerrel to talk about stuff I constantly nerd and yap on about
honestly, really impressed with the work put into this mod, it not only does the thing you expect it to do almost insanely perfectly but it also goes above and beyond and adds some awesome targeting and aiming systems that are very customizable too

Just in case anyone happened to miss it
Playing through this again I am reminded once again how much I hate people for giving Ashley a bad image and making her out to be the most annoying escort in existence
Look at how adorable she is, how can anyone hate her
Got a pretty decent Mendez fight too with what little resources I had, wasted some fire nades though
It's pretty funny imagining that there was once a time where I was deeply terrified of this game as a kid and never got past the first chapter of the village because I was so scared
this was always a super weird take because Ashley was the textbook example of how to do an escort quest correctly: make her smart enough to not die stupidly and give the player enough direct control to deal with the real challenges
people think Ashley is bad ?????
what is fair to point out is that the whole damsel rescue premise is quite the cliche from the get-go, and she gets recaptured multiple times, so I understand (and have seen) that aspect annoy people
It's so strange because none of the complaints about Ashley ever made sense to me
Gameplay wise she's always pretty out of the way and especially if she's got somewhere to hide where she might as well stop existing, if she gets captured or killed it's almost always your fault rather than inherently her fault
And story/lore wise people say she's annoying but I never got that at all, the one time she acts irrationally the game makes it pretty clear it's because of the plaga and she never does it again
I even remember people complaining that she never picked up a gun as a criticism against her
but I don't know but I wouldn't trust a 20 year old college girl who's freaking out with a gun in this situation
The hate always seemed so forced to me honestly
It's funny because she's not even bad by today's standards either, Sheva in RE5 I hear is far far worse and the AI companion in Revelations 2 can be extremely stupid a lot of the times (although Rev 2's companion AI can do a lot of cool interesting stuff too)
yeah I can't get it going farther than "annoy"
the gun comment is odd since we all know that actual NPCs with guns are nigh useless in practice, no one actually wants that lol
I haven't heard much about Sheva, lemme double-check what one of the channels I subbed to said about her...
I always hear about Sheva in a negative light but RE5 is the one RE I still haven't played because it never really interested me at all
But I hear she actually is one of the worst companions if you're doing single player
ok yeah that's the conclusion here too, the AI just doesn't do what you need her to do in single player sometimes
though this is also the only game designed so thoroughly around co-op so it feels weird to describe her as "the worst companion" as if she's in the same role as Ashley
anyway, I haven't played RE5 because
- like Dead Space 3, the heavy co-op focus was about as strong of a "not for me" sign as you can put on the game; by that age I'd long since given up on finding anyone to play co-op with
- holy racial insensitivity Batman
well more broadly I never tried to play every RE, I was in that weird spot of not caring about survival horror until RE4 set the world on fire, then RE5 gave me very strong reasons to do a 180 and I never really came back to it until the last few years when Tale talked me into playing the original trilogy (well: 1 RE, 2 OG, 2 RE, and 3 OG… and 0 and CV)
I have seen RE7 and 8 through let's plays though
I also have 3 remake from a sale, probably should play that one of these days
oh yeah that whole thing, I remember after I heard more about it I found it funny only because of how unbelievable it is for me that nobody at Capcom ever went ''maybe this isn't a good idea?''
I think I've been on a pretty hardcore RE grind as of the last few years ever since Village I want to say, that's when I started playing RE1 a bunch, then RE2 and 3, and then the Revelations games and I just watched full streams of the remakes
I think the last one I played was Code Veronica
and I'm likely gonna go through 2 and 3 again after they drop on GOG too
I think it's the weakest of the classic games by far which is a shame because it's the most technically advanced and could've done a lot of things so much better but it falls short ultimately
they both have such strong first areas
overall, it absolutely is the weakest, but if we could separate the Claire island part from the rest then it’s on par with 1 and 2 for me (ignoring story/character)
The character switching is absolutely one part I can't justify personally, the A-B system works so well that intertwining the characters like CV did is so messy, I can't even see it as an 'old game' thing where it's a limitation or something, that was simply just a really bad design choice
I've even shown how I (intentionally) got myself completely locked from progressing because of what can happen if you're not ready for the character switch
oh, I got softlocked by accident with a missing key item, nothing to do with prepping for the switch
CV and 3 are the only REs I was unable to finish, but for 3 it was a crash
Oh man it feels like cheating to be able to afford these upgrades and have money to spare
I guess i've been doing a good job with the treasures
That's a shame because RE3 is legitimately the best one out of the classics for me at least
But honestly if you're ever feeling like it, it's worth doing another playthrough since there's so many different possible paths to take
So you're bound to have a fresh experience and see something new, especially since it also has a built in randomizer with the items and drops
for me it was the weakest of the original trilogy and I don’t think having played the final boss would’ve changed that, but it’s too late for me to dig into why
but I should play 3RE at some point
Ah well if it was just the final boss then I guess it's fine, but the different ways you can play and complete that game are still worth it for anyone who liked the game enough, it was one of the reasons why I really really disliked RE3R because it just got rid of all that and overall felt like an extremely watered down and duller version of the original
Though I still have to say it's still a really good game, just very lackluster if you see it through the lens of a remake, definitely the weakest one of the remakes
Still really short but hey that may be a plus for a lot of people, easily you can beat that in 4 hours
What I thought about playing sometime, since I've already beaten every other game so many times, was RE Outbreak
that'd be an interesting one to try out again, I remember it was my introduction to RE and my favourite thing as a kid
also weirdly enough, those games are canon too
I also gotta say, playing through this game it feels weirdly... smooth? It may be because I'm used to it, and RE4 naturally has a similar control scheme to RE1R and the classic games, but man I cannot say that this game aged badly at all, I feel so comfortable playing this game
feels good to play
I would say that it feels surprisingly modern and that it's the blueprint for modern REs so it makes sense, but that honour goes to Revelations 2, it's basically indistinguishable from playing the remakes
Those are another REs I'd recommend you to play, if you ever felt like it since I don't think you've played them
They're both pretty short too so it wouldn't take up too much time, but they're very worth it
Neither can Steam apparently because this is one of the achievements
original RE4 is the blueprint for sooooooo many games beyond RE it's kinda nuts
like PoP:SoT and HL2, I'm glad I happened to play it when it was still new
For shooters yeah, but I'd even go so far as to say it's the game that popularized the now standard third person over the shoulder gameplay style (for better and worse), even for games that aren't shooters
I compare it to Revelations because it's the latest RE I've been playing, and it's in a similar position to RE4 but moreso within the RE franchise as, again, it's basically the blueprint for how the remakes play
it's interesting how over time RE has gradually moved from camera angles detached from the player all the way to first person
It's a bit of a disappointing topic for me just because I never saw the fixed cameras as limitations that should be discarded as soon as technology gets good enough, I wish they had the confidence to still use them even if just sparingly or even just for spin off games
And weirdly enough, I actually like first person for RE,I know a lot of people don't like it though, seen a lot of opinions about how the Winters saga is the worst and all that
I mean, they even put a third person mode for 8 retroactively
yeah, 4 and 7 were such huge changes for the series it was always going to alienate some fans
I do think fixed angles would've been less appropriate for those specific games
incidentally I recently watched the Noah Caldwell-Gervais video on all the REs so I've got all of those takes on my mind now (most I agree with but it's interesting where he sharply diverged from you and me)
I think 7 with fixed camera would've been pretty great but you can't do the whole no face protagonist thing so for that purpose first person worked the best
It's a bit hard to say when it would fit into a game or not just because third person became the standard so hard that anything different will be received with a visceral reaction from most gamers, I mean if even first person got people "mad" enough to be changed retroactively then fixed camera has no chance
I just wish it coexisted with the other gameplay styles rather than having been discarded entirely, it's one of the most unique things about survival horror more than other genres I think
There's a mod for RE2R that adds them and it even completely revamps how the aiming works to adjust for fixed cameras and it's pretty incredible
Works surprisingly smoothly, almost feels natural, almost
there are parts of 7 (and 8) I could see working with a fixed camera, but several of the scenes, especially the early ones with Mia and the Bakers, are so clearly designed around them being right up in your face and wouldn't have the same impact otherwise
(incidentally this is one point where I strongly agree with NCG)
That's why it's hard to say because the entire game is completely designed around camera control that so many parts would be completely different just because of the camera placement
I get nostalgia for fixed camera but it's hard to say which if any modern games would've benefitted from it
it's important to remember that back when RE1 was new, the use of fixed camera very much was a technical limitation to let them use more detailed static backgrounds
my personal impression is that with modern tech there's not really any reason to do unique fixed angles for every room in a game (and even for classic RE that seemed to inevitably lead to a few poorly chosen annoying angles), but there are plenty of reasons to use a selection of strategically placed fixed angles alongside a 1st or 3rd person default camera, and lots of games which do the latter
(or top-down/isometric/etc styles where the whole game is just one fixed angle, but that's obv not what we mean)
I guess Signalis is like 90% isometric 10% first person?
It sure was and it wasn't the only game that did it, FF7-8 comes to mind, but I also feel like just because something was born from a technical limitation it doesn't mean it's a mistake to be corrected or that it's necessarily a bad thing, I feel like there's an interesting conversation to be had there, I'm in a weird position where it's not nostalgia for me because I've gotten into this relatively recently, I'm barely 21 and I wasn't getting into all these games until I was I wanna say 14?
I agree that 100% fixed camera wouldn't be the way to go about it on a modern setting, so whenever I talk about fixed camera imagine something more like Silent Hill and Dino Crisis where the camera is dynamic and moves around rather than remaining static (hell you can even allow some manual panning if you wanted) and also has third person angles kind of when you explore the streets in SH, although that's less of a third person camera and more of a fixed wide angle but hey it works
I abstained from bringing up Signalis and Crow Country because they're more isometric than fixed camera? I wanna say at least
But hey I still like that they went with it and both even have tank controls as options for freaks like me
yeah, classic Silent Hill always had the "strategically placed fixed angles"
well Signalis is isometric (or maybe top down if you define isometric as specifically being at a diagonal)
Crow Country is more like third person but waaaaay up high
I'm not sure if there is a standard term for that? I can't think of any other game with that camera
actually "third person" implies being able to rotate it on both axes and CC only lets you rotate horizontally
wtf is that camera
It's a sort of top down angle but not quite and since it also allows you to rotate the camera it's pretty unique in that regard
The only game I can think of that does that is Holstin, another indie survival horror but that one's not even out yet
artistically speaking it's also a very interesting choice
It's also not even inspired at least not mainly by survival horror, it's mostly inspired by FF7 for the artstyle
the CC camera ensures that you're always seeing the boundaries of the room you're in and how the next rooms aren't loaded yet and there's nothing but a void outside
which is exactly the sort of thing most games avoid revealing
it feels like an artistic choice that could only be made in a self-consciously retro throwback game
where everyone who plays it is playing it specifically for its game-ness
come to think of it, FF and RE are both franchises that reinvented their basic structure so much the first and last installments are hardly recognizable
I actually remember in the theatre room I had a little glitch where one of the monsters actually went outside the map into the void and after I finished the game one of the updates patched that out specifically
But yeah, Crow Country is extremely self aware and wears it's inspirations on its sleeves so it fits with the tone of the game a lot
watching too many video essays is making me think about THE ARTISTRY of these design choices more than I usually do lol
Yeah, I'm not experienced enough with FF to talk a lot about it but looking at 7 remake and original in particular there's a bit of the same opinions going on there
I've only personally played FF7 and 9, but I've watched enough videos about the other FFs to get the gist of it
in fact FF could also probably be divided into three eras
RE's first era has the fixed angles and the Raccoon City story, FF's first era is 2D with sprites and top-down angles and purely turn-based combat
then RE invents third person "action horror", FF goes for 3D and "active time battle"
then there's the "modern" REs both first and third person, and FF has been fully real-time for a while
both RE and FF are doing remakes and genuinely stunning cutting edge graphics in their modern eras
ok I'm tempted to look up dates now I didn't realize how similar this trend was
Yep, and it's interesting you bring it up because I had been thinking about FF7 in particular in the back of my mind with this whole conversation because I have some of the same thoughts on that
The funny thing is I started RE with 4 as a kid, although I also played Outbreak which plays like the classics
Then barely in, I wanna say 2019? I finished Crisis Core which was the first FF I played all the way through, and Crisis Core is sort of the RE4 of FF with how it reinvented and became the blueprint of the future for the franchise so in both situations my initial experience has been with those "inbetween" games between the classic and modern era
Having played Crisis Core not only as my first FF but also before playing 7 is also probably a heinous thing
Maybe, I guess it'd be more like Revelations 1...
I did say I don't know much about FF
probably, yeah
But basically they're the games right before the modern era but also after the classics
Modern era I guess being anything post 2018
so at the time FF7 was the first FF on a new console, first in 3D, first with such a big (for the time) budget, notably subverted many standard JRPG story tropes of the time, and wildly commercially successful, with little spinoffs/tie-in games and sequels following the same format to form this "middle era" of the series
and a lot that list applies to RE4 too
Kind of, first or at least a huge pioneer of the third person ots shooter genre, wildly successful to the point both are THE games of each franchise, both were the blueprints for the subsequent games
RE4 didn't have the whole tie ins/spin offs/sequels but it is the most ported game ever made
It's even on the Zeebo
Wasn't the first RE on a new console but it got close, but ultimately beaten by DMC1 and RE1R (can you believe that game is from 2002?)
I had to see the whole series on a timeline before I got just how far removed RE1R is from everything else
that RE1R predates RE4, much less the later remakes, both feels super weird and makes too much sense at the same time
It's interesting because they remade RE1 like a couple years after it first came out
It hadn't even been a decade yet
1R and 4 share a lot of assets, seeing them side by side you can tell it's the same engine and all, I bet if 4 came out first then 1R would've been much different I wanna say
that does seem likely
They even made soft remakes of 2 and 3 with the rail shooter spin offs, Darkside Chronicles I think
Fully remade cutscenes and story and all
Capcom was on the remake train even at the time
as far as personally playing the REs, I think I'll have had my fill whenever I finally play 3 remake
heck I haven't even finished Separate Ways yet
I think survival horror is now one of those genres where I'm waiting for either a more experimental/unique game or one that tells a particularly great story within the genre (like CC and Signalis)
like how I basically haven't played any shooters since... I dunno, Doom Eternal maybe?
It's why I've been satisfied with just watching the remakes and 7 and 8, also the fact that at the time I didn't have a pc strong enough to play them
It's also why I got so excited initially for Signalis because by then I had been replaying RE1 a lot, I got just as giddy for Crow Country too bonus points for both for scratching the classic survival horror itch
I think Alan Wake 2 also fits in there as a super unique new survival horror
you're right it does and I loved it how did I just forget AW2
well clearly my brain didn't catalog it as "shooter" at least
I guess it's the same as metroidvanias with me too, I haven't played one since Blasphemous? And I probably won't play another one unless it's a really unique one or one I particularly like
still, my gaming strategy these days is mostly indies I hear about in genres I like, and actively looking for metroidvanias since that is my favorite genre and I haven't played nearly enough of the non-ultra-famous ones
I don't have much of a strategy other than get through the backlog but also if a new release interests me enough then play that one
asides from survival horror and metroidvanias I had been grinding some hours into rpgs with Cyberpunk and recently SMTV which I've been enjoying a lot
Looking forward to jump back into em, been pretty busy for a while and unfortunately haven't been in that "head space" to sit down and play a session of it
I guess I don't have a "backlog" per se, other than the last batch of games I bought on sale
I do have a wishlist but a lot of that is games I haven't figured out if I want to try yet rather than ones I know I should
Since I snatch most games on sale it's the same for me, just that I tend to hop between games often if a new one interests me enough and I put the others on pause
I did that with Nier, almost forgot about that one when mentioning rpgs
Hell I bought Tunic at around the same time as Pseudoregalia I think and I haven't even installed it yet
which is fair, you absolutely want to be in the right mood for Tunic before diving into it
Yeah, the current plan for me is finish Cyberpunk once I finish the work that's keeping me busy since I'm at the end after 100+ hours but mainly because that game is heavy
and I'd appreciate freeing some of that space
geez I've played a lot of games I never mention in manechat
I'd say that's a plus, means the game was immersive and engaging enough you weren't pausing every 5 min to talk about it
or recording your sessions like I do, but it's fun to share the experience and your first reactions to stuff
sometimes it's that, sometimes I just have nothing to say about it
I guess it's mostly that I don't want to bring up some obscure indie game only to have to explain what it is unless I think it's an exceptional one that people need to hear about (PLAY NINE SOLS) or one all the real gamers already have heard about (yes I'll try Void Stranger again someday)
Whenever I do talk about stuff it's either because I really liked this one part or because I really hated it and I have to gripe about it with no inbetween
usually if I'm having a consistent good time I also will just have nothing much to say about a game
Well other than maybe saying I played this one game and if asked about it I'd say "it was good!" I guess
there's also games where I have mixed feelings and could go into great detail if someone wanted me to but there's just kinda no reason to bring it up in the first place compared to everything else
That's kind of similarly why I'll usually go into game specific threads if I have particularly long thoughts on a game since I don't want to drop a whole rant or review on #1032716748887179434 completely unprompted
speaking of games no one ever talks about, I did have one that's on topic at least: The Exit 8 is a neat horror experiment worth looking at, so small it's more like a tech demo than a game per se but a really good idea
Lol I know about that one vaguely, I haven't seen it fully yet though but I know about it
One of those weird indie games
I think I made it to 5? on my own before I had to just look up some of the things I was missing to get more consistent
for some reason all the poster stuff never caught my eye
hah speaking of I just got to this part tonight
thought it was gonna feel much jankier than it does

mmmm, the vibes
less janky than I thought it was gonna be, since I'm controlling the character RE5 style where the mouse inputs rotate the character so it's not quite 100% tank controls, it didn't feel weird at all
did pretty good against those armors
Oh man, I was soooo scared I might not make it there
I will say, replaying this game, despite some changes I disagree with and think are downgrades, RE4R really does strike the best balance of ''we kept the game the same, but remixed it slightly and made the original areas/sections bigger''
Because in the remake this section and the maze and the regeneradores are given wayyy more time to really let you soak them in, in here they seem pretty small by comparison, I mean this is just the one hallway if you really think about it
I think 4R gets the closest to being a 1R type deal than 2 and 3 do for sure
I'm guessing because 1R and 4R are the ones that didn't change the basic camera style?
Not really no, it's because 4R out of the new remakes is the one that does the better job at maintaining most from the original game down to room layouts and even just the feel of the game, it's the one with the least amount of cut stuff and the least amount of significant changes so it ends up feeling like you really are just playing an enhanced version of 4, although it's not quite there, it still has some quirks, it has some stuff that has big changes and it has some cut content but it's mostly either insignificant like the lava room, or it showed up in Separate Ways, and there is a different enough feel to it especially when it comes to the tone and the characters that I could totally see people preferring the original, I definitely prefer the witty hollywood action movie hero Leon of the original but that's a personal thing, but I also really like remake Ashley and Luis so I'm mixed on that
But overall it really just feels like what 1R did where you're essentially playing the same game, but with some extra stuff, and some remixed stuff, whereas 2 and 3 aren't really like that and feel more like new games that kind of resemble their original counterparts and don't quite cut it as remakes, at least to me anyways, there's too many big changes and cut stuff especially from 3, they feel more like new games based on RE2 and 3 than remakes of those games if that makes sense, but 4 does a better job at really trying to keep all that good stuff in as intact as possible and expand upon them while trying to balance new additions too, it feels like the fullest, most complete and most faithful remake from the new ones in that regard
dang I was forced to use some professional mode strats there after running out of bullets
also hey clean Salazar fight, even finished the fight with a cool reload
I forgot how gooey these guys looked
In today's episode of ''trying speedruning/professional difficulty tricks and failing miserably''
At least Krauser 1 went well, I still love that the most efficient way to fight him is to actually just knife fight him for real
the whole Krauser fight operates on pure metal gear logic
It is very Kojima/Liquid vs Snake coded, except instead of it being brother! it's COMRADE
I was also thinking of Gray Fox doing the “fight me without those stupid guns” shtick
Yeah that actually works even better given both are also enhanced in some way and were the MC's ally in the prequel game
Snake has an excuse with the nanomachines but it's funny how Leon tanks Krauser's hits and doesn't immediately die during the knife fight since I assume he already had the plaga at the time
That secret service training must've been real good huh...
pfff okay 2005 capcom, relax
I wonder what the plan B here would've been if he suddenly died from the machine
No idea how this thing works, let's turn it on!
pretty normal reaction to hearing that, although funnily enough this is probably not even the weirdest thing that's happened to both during this whole trip
horror stories are often a series of desperate choices between uncertain peril and certain death
if anything the weird part was that he knew to leave Ashley behind before entering the boss arena
Lol I thought the same thing when I went into the fight, awfully convenient that Leon's B.O.W senses were tingling before he steps into the arena, but hey it's fine
I actually like that Saddler even does the whole ''oh only Hollywood action movie heroes win!'' thing, it's like the game is self aware and saying ''yeah most of this plot can be dumb but it's fun so whatever'', which for the time is pretty cool since that whole trope was still being done un-ironically at the time
yeah, Resident Evil (as a story) has always been Japan affectionately emulating western horror B-movies, so it's at its best when it commits to the bit and just enjoys being ridiculous
that's how you get away with calling the villain of the story literally just "Nemesis" with a capital N
so, yeah, it's a very good thing that Saddler enjoys being the supervillain in this one
The funny thing is it somehow still strikes a balance between ''good ridiculous'' vs ''bad ridiculous'', AKA the live action movies
Same kind of unashamed nonsense cool action stuff that's horror themed but somehow they're much more unbearable
I don't know if it may be a case of ''thing vs thing (japan)'' though
been a while since I've seen them
No thanks, friend!
aaaaaand time
good clear time
oh boy, it's a tired cliche repeated for seemingly no reason
(well probably less tired on that side of the pond)
80%, not bad
I did watch the very first RE movie at some point so I can at least compare that. I think what it boils down to is the moment-to-moment playing of RE games is a lot of fun for game reasons, while the movie I saw was... okay at moment-to-moment action spectacle, but never particularly interesting. I think it tried a little too hard to have more plot or character when it didn't really have a solid foundation for those things.
I mean if we try to seriously judge (original) RE4's story separately from any of the game parts of the game, we've got some rather enormous problems like why is this one guy the only one going after the president's daughter, Krauser and Ada just kind of existing suddenly with no buildup and seemingly no relevance to the main plot, what even is that whole castle area, none of the characters seem to have an arc except maybe Ashley gets a smidge more badass???
amusingly the remake improves on a lot of that, especially where it was easy to improve with just one extra scene
I still feel like the remake didn't expand enough, I really thought they would go way harder into stuff like Leon's past and the interim period between 2 and 4 and expand even more on Krauser but you only really get a few glimpses or passing mentions and then it's back to mostly a 1:1 of the original story of which there really isn't that much anyway, it's funny because RE1-2-3 feel pretty cohesive and honestly pretty alright if you take it as a trilogy story, there's a clear progression of the main plot in those games but then RE4 drops and it's not only completely different to what you've played before but the story and plot feels like a spin-off entirely, there's like one mention of Umbrella and Wesker's name is mentioned two-three times? I don't even think he shows up at all in the main game either, the game doesn't even actually have any zombies and the Plaga is more like an ancient alien thing than a man-made created virus, it's so strange, it really feels completely disconnected to the rest of the franchise too because RE5 goes back to Umbrella and Wesker, I can excuse Ada being part of it because of course she's doing her usual spy/mercenary for hire shtick but it feels really strange how 4 just drops Krauser into it and goes ''Yeah! Remember him? You all know him right? It's good ol' Krauser
''
I guess any amount of expansion on the source material is good enough though, even though there's some changes I don't like like Ada's whole character and some of the tone being sacrificed I do still think 4R is basically og 4 but enhanced, I do still really hate that Wesker is actually physically in the island the whole time in the remake, why even hire Ada at that point? Just do it yourself, you're already enhanced with your weird zombie juice
yeah, seeing the 1-3 stories after 4 was pretty weird for me since 1-3 are just so simple and straightforward, no dangling unresolved subplots or characters popping in and out of existence for no reason, beyond obvious sequel hooks
oddly I think Ada was maybe the single biggest improvement on the story side, because gasp she has a character arc! but still no one else does lol
Luis and Ashley are generally way better, Luis actually has a character although he still dies in a shitty way, and Ashley is generally just better because since the game is way longer (no way a AAA game in 2023 is gonna be like 11-12 hours like the original) she gets more screentime and she gets to show more of that original personality and character so she's a bit more memorable and I like that, I like how they portray her ''crush'' on Leon and Leon either bluntly turning her down or being completely oblivious that she's even trying to flirt, I think it's cute
although that may be affected by her English voice work being not good and me liking to play my REs with Japanese voices
I'm actually blanking on how the "crush" is handled in the remake
I may be misremembering but I don't really think Ada's changed that much, I think she's the one that's overall the worst out of the remakes, even in RE2R, and her voice acting is definitely the worst part of it, it's not even trying to do the whole ''oh Ada's a spy so of course she sounds cold and detached from the situation!'' the VA is just really bad, I think Capcom switched her VA because the RE2R one worked for an union they don't like or something along those lines? So they recast her which is a shame because her performance was actually really good
oddly what I remember of Ashley's remake dialogue are the comments about wanting to becoming a secret agent like Leon
in 4R the main thing I'm referring to is that at the end there's a new scene of her making it clear that she got the plagas sample, and then actively choosing not to give it to Wesker because it turns out some things aren't worth the money after all, and this is implied to be a choice she would not have made earlier in the story (perhaps because Leon rubbed off on her?)
I'm pretty sure none of that was in the original
in particular I never had a clue wtf she was even doing there in the original, I assumed it was some legacy character I'd understand if I'd played 1-3
(which I now realize is maybe a little true but mostly it's still a huge question mark before the remake lol)
and in 2R, my strongest Ada memory is of that great scene where Leon reveals he's wise to her game, that "Oh Leon..." moment is so perfect
To be fair if you went into 4 blind you'd also have no clue who Leon or what a raccoon city is either, I think that whole ending scene is good too, although it's kind of the same character arc from RE2 again, but I guess it's better than having no character arc at all? Really any addition is probably an improvement for 4 considering the original's story didn't have that much going on, it's just a shame that I didn't happen to like it, I liked the scenes with Luis though but that's because Luis is better in the remake as a character
Separate Ways even has its own issues with establishing that Wesker was on the island the whole time and had already grabbed Krauser's corpse but still decided to let Ada go with the sample?
It's nothing too major, it's subtle small stuff, like her dialogues when you catch her and she goes ''my hero/skillz'' or tells Leon he'd look good in a knight's armor and does the awkward laugh, in the original they only have a handful of 'fun' moments like that like when they jump down the trash hole, they just interact a bit more in the remake and that's always good since it develops the relationship a bit more, I feel like it makes the whole overtime line a bit more believable too since for most of the original Ashley is either unconscious or captured
she just gets to know Leon a little bit more in the remake but that's all you need
Really it's a shame RE has a tendency to introduce characters and never bring them up again because Ashley is one of those that would be great as a returning character
I actually really liked Parker from Revelations, I know people really like Sheva and Carlos, Moira was also fantastic, but hey after their respective games are done they might as well not even exist anymore
it's a similar arc, but there's still a significant gap between "I can't shoot Leon in the face" and "I can't give this weapon to Wesker"
now I'm imagining RE2R having dialogue choices and if you manage to make Ada not like you she actually does shoot you in the head there
Installed this RE1 mod that fixes some of the character textures/designs, it restores Jill's outfit to be like it was in the beta of the game/original RE1 and wow I seriously underestimated just how green they made her look in the remake
1R and 4 definitely both suffer a little bit from the whole ''reality is brown'' era of games, I can see a justification for it being an artistic choice to be more moody and dark and scary but man some colors are really washed out
lol I feel a bit silly that knowing the stairs strat and kind of getting the hang of how to bait zombies like in RE4 makes me feel like a pro at this game
Weirdly this seems to be my first Normal playthrough of this game, before I had apparently only played on Easy and Hard, but never Normal
huh
so what was the consensus on Resident Evil 4 Remake ? good ? bad ? middle ?
Out of all the newer remakes, the closest one to the original by far in my opinion, it's fantastic as a game and really good as a remake
My only complaints are nitpicks, stuff like the tone being far more serious and dark than the original, Leon's not a hollywood silly action hero anymore, at least not as much, Ada's changes are a major downgrade in my opinion, but then you have things like Ashley and Luis being far better and overall a pretty good degree of faithfulness to everything in the original
noted
also, if i'm wanting to play 1-3, play the originals not the remakes right ?
That depends, I would say yes, but I realize I may be biased, if you can handle classic survival horror gameplay, absolutely no questions asked, they're masterpieces, if you're the kind of person that just straight up can't play an older survival horror game, then the remakes are still good, the only one I'd avoid personally is RE3R, because it fails on every front in my personal biased opinion, but it's still a good horror themed action game by itself
Luckily, all the classics are easily available through the new GOG bundle, 15 bucks for all, 4-5 bucks each, RE1R is also constantly on sale and you can get it for 4-5 bucks too and that one's probably the best version of RE1
RE2 just came out on GOG this 27th and RE3 is on the way (and I can't wait)
awesome
for what it's worth, for someone brand new to the entire franchise, I would probably recommend RE1 remake and RE2 remake, since those represent the franchise's "classic" and "modern" gameplay, are some of the best games anyway, and of course being the start of the plot helps
but if you're already convinced you want to play more than that, or want more of a particular style, then yeah there's a lot more worth playing
I'd be hesitant to recommend RE1 original just because the remake there is almost an objectively better experience (unlike 2 and 3 where the remakes are different enough it makes sense to play both, and 3's remake is controversial)
I second that.
I favor classic RE generally but both kinds are worth playing. Given infinite time.
Ultimately both the originals and the remakes are worth experiencing, but that's why I say I'm biased, if someone asks me what they should play if they plan to play through 1 2 and 3, and they don't immediately shrivel up and turn into dust at the mention of tank controls and fixed camera angles, then I'm gonna recommend the originals always, except for 1 for obvious reasons, but also yes the remakes would be my recommendation for someone who wants to play the games but treats tank controls like the plague because they're also good and worth playing too
for someone who's never tried tank controls or doesn't know what that phrase means, starting with RE1 remake is probably the best chance of appreciating them
original 1-3 are so much lower fidelity it can be hard to tell the character is turning sometimes
. . . Didn't you play 1 on classic controls?
The push forward goes forward turn left turn right
yes? I think you misread me, that statement was based on RE1 remake having tank controls
i still haven't decided whether or not to get RE4R, i'm waiting to see how much money i have after my subscription services are charged
Oh sorry I'm a moron
no you aren't youre very smart
Work/play imbalance wreaking havok on my ability to think
I did replay RE0 recently
I still love it's design elements and despise like everything else
I figured I'd try it on easy just because it's frustrating at the best of times and god damn that is way too easy
Rebecca has an adventure with bugs and debates if she's straight or not
it's always 1-4 and 7+Village
(thta's mostly a joke but)
i see
Yeah no one loves 0
(brace for inevitable disagreement)
They made some mechanical decisions taht were just disastrous
throw in some very unfun enemies
add a LOT of frustration around item management
i see
there are a lot of RE spinoffs and most of them don't get recommended much for good reason
for example, if you like the "classic" RE style in RE1 remake and want more of that, then my follow-up rec would've been original 1-3 and optionally... the first half of Code Veronica
(and, well, Signalis and Crow Country, but you know)
it's so baffling how good Code Veronica's Island level is when the Antarctica stuff borders on unplayable in multiple places
(as a level at least, you still have to ignore Steve)
what's Steve's deal this is not the first time ive heard of him
He's a really crappy romantic interest for Claire that was shoved into the game
He's unbearable
what's with the need to shoehorn in random romances
I was fed up with "romantic plot tumors" before I was a teenager lol
I don't think I got exposed to any genuinely good romance stories until much later
It's just a pretty bad game with questionable design choices
RE has tons of spin offs that mostly don't get mentioned because as time goes on nobody's really played them
My introduction to RE was the Outbreak spin offs, and the Revelation series is arguably as good as the main games
Then you get the crazy ones like Dead Aim, Survivor, the Chronicle series which are actually pretty good
RE0 is very interesting, in the same way that a post-mortem analysis of a train crash is interesting
pun partially intended because by far the best part of RE0 is the opening level on a train
so this might be a dumb question but are any of the movies good
Not really no
Neither the live action or animated movies
They're good in the "I'm hanging out with friends eating snacks and literally nobody is paying attention to the screen for more than 2 seconds" type of good
my only exposure to them is the infamous Rich Evans reaction
http://www.redlettermedia.com - To see the full RLM discussion of the Resident Evil series, watch the latest Half in the Bag on our website.
Just a note here: None of this was faked or even acted or enhanced. Rich Evans cannot fake his laughter. Sometimes it happens. Sometimes it doesn't. I can also not fake this. By the end I couldn't breathe ...
is Resident Evil 4 menus or parkour

It's a small thing but I appreciate that you spend a significant amount of time with Sherry in this game after you meet up again, she's not really a hassle to have while running around and she's adorable, whenever you stand idle for too long or interact with a puzzle she'll just stand next to you and hold your hand and look up at you
I must protect this child with my life
if there's something I love about these games more than the cheesy voice acting (which isn't that bad here) is how on the nose storytelling can be in them since games they weren't quite there yet
''Even though I'm an only child, neither of my parents ever spend much time with me, because of their work, I grew up alone
but now that you're with me, I finally have someone to rely on!
''
subtext is for cowards
also coolest Claire look ever
poor leon, after this his attitude in 4 is understandable
Aaaaaaadaaaaaaaaaa!!!!
I love how in between all the cheesy delivery you get the one scene where you feel like the VA really went crazy with it, big ''I should've been the one to fill your dark soul with liIIIIIGHT'' moment
also talk about anticlimactic, this fight took way less time than I remember it to
maybe I went in a little too over prepared...
Playing through both these scenarios again man they really don't give you a whole lot of opportunity to play around with the toys you get later on, I didn't even use the flamethrower at all, but that might just be the mind goblins talking
also also, man games that include these little unlockable concept art and game art things are my jam
so many goodies in here it's awesome
now to wait for RE3
a shame my all time favourite one isn't here: ''Oh... sorry about that babe''
crow country
woof, this one's rough....
RE2 had a dedicated screen in options to map your keys and all, but there's not even an options tab in the menu of this one
Gotta do it the good ol' PC way
Ah, seems like there's also no way to return to the menu like with RE2
Just gotta hit ESC and exit the game entirely if you wanna do a new game or reload
That's a bummer
Ah, well, at least you get all the special costumes from the get-go
That's pretty neat
really wish I had an easier way to install those HD mods for the PC ports of these games, because they genuinely make these games look amazing and also holy hell those models are way more wobbly than I remember
have you guys seen those "Leon and the Mysterious Village" animations ?
are those the ironically cutesy ads Japan had for the RE4 remake?
yessss
No but I want to

nuh uh, i'm Leon's best friend /j
he would say this
why the hell did i think RE2 Remake came out in 2017
it came out in 2019
RE7 came out in 2017
that must be what im thinking of
im watching jacksepticeye play RE8 (i'm on a big horror kick lately idk) and i forgot how much i love Ethan
Okay, I'm extremely pissed off right now
Not only because I only now find out that RE2 (and I assume by extension RE3-CVX and maybe 0 and 1R) have a control setting option that completely changes how your character moves by making you run by pressing the right trigger, something I only found out because I'm currently modding a Wii for my nephew and installing a bunch of Gamecube games, RE2 included, and I was looking up whether or not the controller setting options save after turning the game off because I wanted to turn on auto-aim for him, and suddenly I stumble onto someone talking about Type-C controls which is something I never bothered to look at
but also, I'm pissed off because it actually makes movement feel incredibly good
I remember NitroRad talking about this type of movement for fixed camera horror games when talking about one of the Fatal Frame games and how because those games don't have tank controls at all, this type of movement option actually feels really good for those games
I don't know why but I get the feeling that this type of movement option would probably feel pretty good for someone who otherwise would feel weird about tank controls
this is like the ultimate chuunibyou fantasy lol
in every way except in-universe chronology, putting just these two together is super weird lol
still cool to have a DRM-free option for one of the best games in the series
There's a bundle with RE0 through 3 (plus the RE1 Remake) on sale right now.
"0 through 3" is such a weirdly ambiguous phrase in this context
I'm guessing that skips CV?
Looks like
Not that weird, both came out next to each other and both were originally Gamecube exclusive and had the same engine, they also made an Origins collection including these two before
Code Veronica to my knowledge doesn't have a PC port
But it's on the dreamlist
Chris wishes he was that buff during the Spencer mansion incident
RE9 looks so cool
Welp Death Island was the last official project with the previous Leon face model
the only ones left are Rebecca and Claire, and Claire will probably get replaced with a new model they will use for any future appearances when Code Veronica remake inevitably drops, so the only one that's gonna be left from the originals is gonna be Rebecca's face model/design
I first played RE4 in 2023 and instantly fell in love with Leon's character. But apparently, when the OG came out, some fans blamed the EN translation for changing his character. In this month's blog, I set out to uncover if this was truly the case.
annacairistiona.wordpress.com/2025/11/19/d...
-# Did Resident Evil 4’s English Translation Really Butcher Leon’s Character?
A huge part of the original Resident Evil 4’s charm lies in its dialogue. Its script is chock-full of corny one-liners and cheesy comebacks, courtesy of its wisecracking protagonist, Leon S. Kenned…
258
578
also I started seeing tweets of people saying ''finally Leon shows up in a new RE game after so long''
so naturally I found it so funny I took the time to make a sort of comprehensive list of all the other major RE characters that actually haven't shown up in a long time, for fun
yeah most RE characters are one-offs for their games or sub-series of games
well that was fascinating
tbc my personal experience was OG RE4 entirely in English (well, English plus bonus gratuitous Spanish
), and then RE4 RE with Japanese voices and English subs
so I had technically played a version of the game in both languages but obv not quite in a way that I could vouch for the original translation
Which is a huge shame, because so many of these characters would've been great returning characters, and a lot of them is honestly baffling how little we know about them currently
and it'd be fine considering the new ''trilogy'' (a DLC doesn't count as a new game) of the Winters family games introduces new characters and antagonists, but the jump forward 10+ years into the future just kinda crushes any chance of ever seeing any of these characters ever again, especially considering Capcom wants to put an end to Raccoon City with Requiem, it's both a missed chance with games that came before and also completely destroying any chances of picking up with a lot of these characters for the future, which is especially odd because both RE6 and Revelations 2 set up important things that will probably never get brought up ever again, like Natalia being slowly overtaken by the copy of Alex Wesker in her mind
tbh I don't think RE storytelling is deep enough that we're really missing out on much there
if anything RE needs to chill with making Wesker and Chris always returning
I think it's a great showcase of when sometimes localizing the dialogue vs straight up translating is required, because of course whenever they go too far with it it's always bad, but I think there's a lot of phrases in the original script that would simply sound too clunky in translation
This particular one comes to mind, because a lot of anime media that is translated somewhat literally suffers from these obviously japanese phrases being translated literally and they always sound so clunky, I've come to find them really charming and it's a huge indicator to me that this is an anime, but I understand the argument for localizing such phrases to make them sound natural in the language too
this one too
yeah, if I ever find myself needing to explain to a monolingual person why "literal" translation isn't automatically a good thing, there's some great examples here
the bingo line being a localizing thing is one of those ''translated is better than the original'' moments, maybe the original ''what's going on...?'' has some sort of tone quirk in japanese that gives off the same vibe, I can imagine maybe it's worded in a super casual way or something, but the bingo line just went so perfectly with the rest of Leon's attitude, it's one of those things that just like the article says isn't literally translated but still retains the energy that the original script wanted to go with in the original language
I've come to find them really charming and it's a huge indicator to me that this is an anime
I've gone back and forth on this a few times myself, but ultimately ended up feeling that if you can tell it's a translation just by awkward word choice, that's not really a good thing. You should be able to tell it's a translation because of the voices being another language or the deliberately untranslated parts like -san/-kun/-chan, but not due to clunky phrasing.
yeah IME this kind of thing is surprisingly common in professional quality translations, sometimes one language just had an opportunity that the other didn't
(in Japanese the word "bingo" is only really used in the "correct answer" sense, and off the top of my head there isn't a strong candidate for stereotypical old person thing which could work as a joke here)
I guess a good example of the reverse would be, when I was watching the Japanese dub of Star Wars A New Hope, I found it super interesting that Darth Vader ends up sounding like a samurai
I've come to find it charming just because watching anything subbed you can't really escape from it, subs are as 1:1 translation from the japanese text as you can get most of the times, and some times you also get some of those quirks in actual dubs though it's usually rare
if I was a professional translator, I'd probably hate it, it would probably go against what I do professionally and I would see it as a mark of someone who's either lazy or incompetent, and I understand that from that viewpoint it would seem that way, but as a consumer... I actually really enjoy getting to see a somewhat ''unadulterated'' version of the show I'm watching, especially since I can't actually understand japanese
and it's even better when I get the little translator notes where they describe any culture specific things that are going on or are being said
like that moment in Azumanga Daioh where Osaka throws her shoe and you get the little translator note saying ''this is a cultural thing it's what people do to tell what the weather will be like'', it's really fun
well translator notes are often essential no matter how "professional" it is
tends to happen a lot in translated games as well, a lot of the DBZ/Naruto games I would play would be riddled with these types of ''this was clearly a japanese sentence that was not properly adapted to this language'' things
they would always sound really strange, more so than the usual ''theatre-kid'' dialogue of anime, but I ended up liking them!
the other thing is that it's really easy to produce a literal translation that's actually subtly misleading because it nails the individual words but drops some critical aspect of the overall sentence or even the conversation, even if it feels "unadulterated"
Unfortunately I would have no way to know because I don't actually understand japanese so I would have no way to properly check or recognize that happening, I think a lot of the subs I've come across generally do a good job of that though, and admittedly it tends to happen less now, especially for any big officially translated games or shows on streaming sites or something
not even anime specifically, anything japanese for that matter
Silent Hill 1 for example, has quite a couple of those weird quirks where you can totally tell ''this was a japanese thing that was translated 1:1 for sure'', PS1 games are full of that, but it happens a lot less now obviously so generally isn't that big of a deal now
Resident Evil 1 for example, I remember coming across a comment explaining why the voice acting is so weird and stiff, asides from inexperienced VAs because at the time voice acting in games wasn't as big of an industry as it is now, it was also supposedly intentionally done that way so japanese audiences would understand what's being said a little better, which is why so many phrases have such odd intonation to them
I don't know how true that is, I just remember reading it and thinking it makes good enough sense
I can definitely believe that
there's a number of older Japanese games that use non-Japanese languages, even in the original Japanese release
For the voices definitely, I don't think many were dubbed even well into the PS3 era
I definitely don't think Devil May Cry, Resident Evil or Silent Hill games on PS2 had any JP dubbing, just subtitles
when I was playing Castlevanias earlier this year, I got extremely confused at first when Rondo of Blood opened with German voices, in a game that didn't even have a western release (at least not in the format I was emulating)
I can't seem to find an actual list of PS1 games with Japanese audio, there's some about Japan-only games but... that doesn't mean those Japan-only games have Japanese audio necessarily
there's probably mixed cases that are hard to classify too, like my Rondo example where IIRC it was only the opening cutscene
and also the japanese have a really strange fascination with english as it is anyways, I can't even come close to count the amount of japanese games that even in japanese just straight up have english menus or phrases everywhere
my favorite is those t-shirts with random English text all over them
one would think it would've gotten a bit better now compared to the usual examples from two decades ago now but seems like it's still the same
I guess it's a tradition now, gotta keep it going
hashtag fish
I feel like the most accepted manifestation of this phenomenon is japanese videogame titles, and I don't mean the super long ''oh no I got ran over by a truck and now I'm a cute girl in a medieval world?!?!'' titles, but the ones where it's a flashy name with some flavor text or sub-title thrown in there which is usually a really odd combination of english words, or sometimes just a single random english word
(tangent but we could use a few isekais that unironically do the gender swap thing)
Like for example
''Something something something: SOMETHING -something-'' you know?
surely there's one or two that have done that
Basically, although I feel like Touhou games are a weird example because I feel like they've always been a little niche in a way... despite the fact that it's such a surprisingly bigger than you think franchise... but the actual games made by the touhou guy I always felt were somewhat niche and clearly meant for mostly japanese audiences so I never encountered them in the wild
okay I'm kinda cheating and being a bit basic because I literally looked up ''japanese games 2025'' but these are perfect examples of what I mean
I see a game with this title and I think ''that's a japanese game 100% no doubt in my mind''
''Something Something SOMETHING - SOMETHING SOMETHING - ''
oh yeah, not just niche, they're literally doujin games
I guess not so much now? But mentally I'm kind of still in the 2010s and that's around the time I even found out about Touhou at all so that's still the impression I have of those games
I guess now they're not exactly doujin-level anymore
"when is a doujin not a doujin" = "when is an indie not an indie"
I guess if they're still done by the one guy they're technically still indie, admittedly I don't know if doujin means the same as indie
the answer is, of course, yesn't
so doujin was originally a shortening of 同人誌 doujinshi, literally "same person magazine", meaning self-published magazines/manga/novels
while indie was originally a shortening of "independent", implying "independent of any major publisher"
there's a lot of overlap but also enough important nuances and cultural baggage and usage drift from the original meaning that I think it makes sense to consider both words to be their own thing at this point
for example, IIUC Zun typically releases his Touhou games by bringing a pile of CDs to Comiket; this is not how western indies work
Right right, I remember many years ago finding out the real meaning of doujin and being surprised it wasn't just a synonym for specifically ''NSFW anime fanart'' since that's one of the contexts most non-japanese people are familiar with on the internet, I guess more than the games 'not being niche anymore' it's more so that I guess they have a much bigger audience now and ZUN probably knows that and with that maybe some of the design ideas change to fit that bigger audience, but if the guy is still bringing piles of CDs to Comiket to this day to distribute his games.... then I doubt much has changed for Touhou specifically then
tbc my earlier comment was mainly about the unambiguous cases like the earlier mainline Touhous, where it was literally still just one guy and there's no debate at all about whether the label applies
oh god yeah, imagine if people thought "indie" implied porn
Yeah unfortunately it's one of those terms where saying it anywhere other than Japan means a completely different thing, or rather, people interpret it as only the one thing, it's a very similar case to the word 'otaku'
Otaku just means a person obsessed with something, anywhere other than Japan it means specifically a weeb
if the guy is still bringing piles of CDs to Comiket to this day to distribute his games....
I should probably fact-check this...
OH, that's right, they made a whole separate con called Reitaisai because Touhou was consuming too much of Comiket
We are technically pony otakus for example
Yeah that sounds about right
I don't think the guy can even print enough CDs to not run out anymore if he's still physically attending conventions
similarly, "railfan" (as in someone obsessed with trains) in Japanese is tetsu-ota(ku)
Train otakus will always remind me of that infamous foreigner guy that completely bombed some train otaku's photoshoot riding his bike and waving hello

Remember the awful basement music of Director's Cut that sounded like someone blowing a trumpet out of their rear? Well, I wanted to see what it sounded like if the instrument was changed after being transcribed and it was fixed up a bit.
Fun fact: remember the RE1 director's cut basement track?
Well, remember also how the composer for that whole soundtrack ended up being revealed to be deaf?
Well, remember also also how it turns out he wasn't actually as deaf as he said he was?
Well, did you know, actually, if you simply move some options around in a sound software and put the exact same tones into a different more proper instrument, you get an actually good track instead?
This whole time it wasn't a bad track necessarily, we just got a version of it with trumpets for whatever reason

In this video, I do a deep dive on the Nemesis from Resident Evil 3, explaining why he is the greatest monster survival horror has to offer and then breaking down how the remake ruined him.

fine youtube, fine! I'll watch this video you've been recommending me for like 2 years
I'm probably just going to agree with everything anyway
(hot take: he wasn't that special in the original game
)
You could say that, sure, but then again that would make the remake version even less when it should've elevated the original and made it more impressive instead
yeah, in retrospect it's really funny that Nemesis has all the OG hype, yet it's Mr X that got elevated by the remakes and makes Nemesis look like a nothingburger now
I came around to Mr X when I was re-re-replaying RE2R recently because I always found him incredibly annoying, but now that I'm better at the game and I know how to get around I realize he's only ever truly chasing you for short periods and the thing that makes him harder is not initially knowing where to go so you spend more time running around in the danger areas whereas gunning it straight to where you actually have to go to progress makes him stick around for surprisingly less time
I still think it's kind of annoying to have him around permanently but I guess the parts where he's permanently looking around are so short that it makes up for it
well, a big part of why Mr X was so uniquely great for me in RE2R is that he doesn't even show up until after you've spent a lot of time in the police station, so I did have the ability to navigate that space well enough to quickly take a detour, or if he was blocking the only path forward, lead him away to somewhere I could lose him and loop back around to where I really wanted to go
I generally just got lucky, and also I try to clear out as much of the RPD as I can anyways so that I have to not deal with him as much, in the original it's not really a problem since he doesn't show up for A scenario at all, and even then he's only really a bit of a nuisance since he can't actually follow you anywhere so he just bursts in and gets in your way but it's still scary because he's such an imposing threat and almost always completely blocks the path where you need to go to escape from him
...which is still better than ''grabs you by the head, throws you on the ground and does a cool pose before giving you a full 5 seconds to run away'' Nemesis
and now that I watch the video seriously what is the idea behind making every single character demean and insult Nemesis like that? It's almost comical that every single line they say about him they always have to try to belittle him and call him a little bitch, the more and more I re-experience RE3R the more I think it wasn't at all cut content that was the problem but just the direction of that game entirely
one of these days I might finally play RE3R, it's weird that I never managed to fit it in when I was binging all the other pre-4 REs
(or maybe RE4R came out at the "worst" time?)
Not like you're gonna need to really set up and prepare a whole day to play it or something, the whole game is like 4 hours, which is another baffling thing when the original was arguably one of the games with the more replay value with the built-in randomizer and multiple routes instead of different scenarios. The other games were short too but that's because they were divided between 2 different campaigns, and 2 actually had 4 with the A-B scenarios on top of that, RE3 made up for it with the different choices but if you take that away it's just... the one scenario with nothing else to really come back to
everytime I even think about this game just makes me depressed, I'm depressed that this is what RE3 will be for so many people because a very small fraction of people are actually going to bother with the original now, and it makes me depressed that there's no chances for a re-do because they'll never just re-remake RE3 to get it right, so now we're stuck with this version and it's of course going to be the one they're gonna go with for any other projects too like we've seen with Death Island just actually using the exact same design from RE3R
what I do want to do is probably re-play RE3 since it's been a while since the last time I did and I've already done so many RE1-RE2 runs I could do another RE3 one
maybe pick some different options this time around if I'm feeling like trying something new
The Galerians series (well, the first game) is a great Resident Evil clone that takes the formula and makes its own with its psychic power focus.

I tried so hard to look for the source of this magazine but I can't for the life of me find it at all!
I wish I could find it so I could read the entire thoughts, it's so cool seeing the lens through which people saw this game back then, talking about all the things we take for granted and we just expect out of any videogame nowadays
also: wow, people really doubted Leon's fur leather jacket look?
it's one of those things people always unanimously agree is one of the coolest things, seeing people reacting to it as something new and seeing it as odd is messing my perception a bit
there are no door opening animations
that was a thing that a magazine had to mention as this great new addition to the franchise!
wasn't even the only article to make fun of Leon's jacket, was it really that odd of a fashion choice?
I kinda preferred that though, I feel like a lot of the REmake designs are so generically hollywood esque, which was always the point for franchises like RE and Silent Hill that were inspired by Hollywood and american culture, but they were always digested through a Japanese cultural lens so you got those cool weird anime ish designs from RE1-2 or whatever the hell Harry Mason is wearing in Silent Hill 1
the source video is pretty good too, I remember playing that awful original Ubisoft PC port back then and being also horribly confused by the button prompts, I think it had to do with gamepads at the time having 1234 as the buttons because they were knockoff brands and actually official console gamepads that connected to a PC didn't really exist at the time
you know, something like this
I actually remember seeing this one back then
also, what a time, look at all those RE games that came out so close to each other
RE3, Code Veronica, RE Zero, Outbreak, REmake! it was a Resident Evil heaven during those years
yeah, sometimes a company just decides this is the franchise we're gonna invest in, so you get a new main installment and multiple spinoffs they're hoping might catch on and become a new cash cow
Also the core development for the engine is already done, so they can re-use it for spinoffs without the additional expense.
A Compilation of more than 70 early cutscenes that Capcom left in the files of the Separate Ways DLC for Resident Evil 4 Remake. I have done my best to arrange these in chronological order and have restored audio to most of them that were missing (excluding cutscenes that were not in the final game).
I hope to god they remake the first games i hate the fixed camera so much
...but they already did?
I should try playing the HD remaster of the first game again, I'll def need a guide tho
It would've been cool if the remakes had an option for the fixed camera imo
Or I could emulate the first game
As much as I, being the number one defender of fixed cameras, would love an option to toggle fixed cameras, it just doesn't work that way, it's not really that simple
You could do it, but ideally, the entire game is designed with where the camera is going to be placed at which dictates how you design enemies, enemy encounters, placements, the design of the areas
it's kind of like those mods to change the camera for Signalis, they're a cool novelty but it doesn't go beyond that because the game just wasn't designed to be played or seen that way
The mod to put fixed cameras on RE2R has to completely change the control scheme and aiming mechanics to fit with the fixed cameras and I just don't expect that kind of consideration for a toggle-able option nowadays, it also still isn't perfect in that a lot of encounters were clearly meant to be experienced with the third person perspective (but the modders did an excellent job at framing a lot of scenes with the fixed cameras really well)
Village and RE9 get away with the toggleable first person and third person because they're really not that different of a viewpoint and they don't fundamentally change the entire controls like having a toggle-able fixed camera mode would
Yeah that's fair
It can still be done, but nowadays when a lot of companies can't even be bothered to properly remaster or port over their older games I simply do not expect the proper amount of consideration to preserve or even evolve the fixed camera game design in a new game, it would likely be way worse than the RE2R mod is, which admittedly feels really good, but it had to do a lot of modifications to even get it to work at all and is still more of a bandaid job than a proper way to enjoy RE2R with a fixed camera (still is gonna be my preferred way to play going forward though), it even works relatively well with the more action-y gameplay of RE
as much as the RE1R is praised for being as 1:1 to the original as possible, it isn't completely 1:1, so as long as you can handle classic survival horror gameplay and the sight of a PS1 game doesn't make you want to claw into your eye sockets and tear out your own eyeballs with your fingers like a lot of people when someone recommends them an old game, then it's worth to check out either really
The funny part is that there's 5 different versions of RE1, the original RE1, Director's Cut Dualshock, Deadly Silence or RE1 DS, the Gamecube/Wii RE1R, and the 2015 HD remaster of the remake
I hear Deadly Silence is actually a really good relatively ''''modern''''' port of RE1 (it was the Nintendo DS so not that modern now )
Im not bothered by PS1 graphics tbh, I enjoy how they look, even though a lot of modern gamers dont
I did not know RE1 was on the DS
Maybe I should get a DS emulator to play that version
You know what I might actually do a Deadly Silence playthrough myself, I've played RE1R countless times but I never actually did a full playthrough of the original original RE1
Oh wow a surprising amount of QoL features there
built in skippable door animations, skippable cutscenes (I don't think the PS1 versions had that), quick turn implemented, knife is RE4 style rather than a separate equippable weapon on its own, brand new animations and models
You've gotta love the voice acting in RE1
Oh wow this is really interesting
The arranged mode for the DS version has fully redesigned areas, encounters and different camera angles
It also has exclusive extra puzzles and mini encounters in some rooms where you have to slash away at enemies using the touch screen
the original mode still has all the gameplay improvements though, and the original areas
so it's like a port + a pseudo remake
wow that's crunchy
and green
Wow, your game looks a lot better than mine
on Melon DS I change the video renderer to open gl and upscale the resolution 10x to 1080 I think
Oh I see
Yeah that looks much less crunchy now
These controls are gonna need some getting used to
Goddamnit i suck at this game
Some more differences I just found from the original with this DS version:
By tapping the touch screen when getting grabbed Jill can counter-attack the zombies and push them back or even damage them with acrobatic moves, and this was before her cool moves from RE5 lol
also, in the Rebirth mode Forest is actually alive and will come after you just like in the remake version! I wonder if they got it from here
I also don't know if it's a Rebirth mode exclusive, but there's also an added headshot mechanic too where you can get critical hit headshots sometimes, I got two in a row
Ooh that first part is good to know
man the difference is just staggering
so much detail that was put into the models
they legitimately don't look half bad at all at higher resolutions, they look the same as those HD mods for the original games
aaaand, time.
nice, I speedran the whole mansion in about 50 minutes or so
could be better
that's actually wild that the DS version doesn't look worse compared to the PS1 version at all, in fact it looks like an upgrade despite slightly chonkier and less detailed backgrounds, which is probably fine considering it was meant to be seen in a much more pixelized chonkier screen
some of the colors are different as well they're a bit more blown out I've noticed, not as dark and much more saturated, but other than that... I think I'd rather play through the DS version than the PS1 version honestly
It has quick turn, it has RE4 style quick knife, it has quick reload, built in door skips and cutscene skips, subtitles, sort of arranged mode with Rebirth mode, original version can be played with all the improvements too
and it's not missing any content like all the other versions of RE1 that are missing certain features for some reason
oh yeah and it also doesn't have clown farts in the basement...
I was looking at physical copies of RE Deadly Silence and it's going for over $100
I love the used gaming market
It'd be cool to own, but that's a lot
I mean, if you have an actual NDS or 3DS you can incredibly easily mod it to have it on the real hardware
I know it's cool to have the actual physical games for a lot of these consoles but for a long time it hasn't been something I think is worth doing at all unless you have the money to spare and it's something you really care about, most of the consoles I care about all have methods of modding them and having completely digital libraries
a 2DS is the same as a 3DS it simply doesn't have the 3D feature so yes it's the exact same process
Yeah, I kinda thought so
These are awesome
Well it's not gonna be earning me any spots at a GDQ event but that's a pretty speedy mansion section! I think that's about as quick as I can get that done by playing normally
and yes, that is actually the entire 40 min it took me to do the whole mansion, compressed to less than 100 mb from the 900 mb of the original video file
Holy shit, that's crazy
the only crazy thing is that it still even looks like recognizable footage even after all the compression to be able to send it in here
playing through this, even just the initial mansion area, is making me really appreciate REmake even more because of just how closely it follows the original game, I do remember there being some missing content later on that I will keep an eye out on, as well as just generally keeping an eye out for any differences between this and the REmake, so far it's just been remixed items and the mansion being slightly smaller in size in the original
like the crests which are required to even exit out of the mansion into the garden in the original, but in REmake they're required to get access to the lab later on
I also noticed some zombie placements that are there in REmake that aren't there in the original, and it's fun to realize they probably put those there to throw off players who played RE1 fifty million times inbetween 95 and 02
and speaking of appreciating I'm also loving the dialogue and voice acting, it amuses me so much when I encounter dialogue like this where I can fully tell this was written in Japanese with no regard for how it would sound in a different language and it was probably translated as directly as possible
Richard's is mostly outrageously bad voice line reading, but most of Barry's dialogues are a good example of what I mean
the first cutscene is just full of it, it's little things like the super weird phrasing of things like ''Now it's Wesker's time to disappear too!'' or ''I'll try the door on the opposite side'', even the whole ''what is this about? I can't figure it out at all...'' doesn't seem that weird at first, but it's just not the way people really talk or the words people use, but I can totally imagine some of these dialogues in Japanese in an anime context and they wouldn't stick out at all in the slightest
hell, Barry even drops the mythical まあ、しょうがないね (Mā, shōganai ne) !
and sure this all probably sounds super weird to an english audience and it has really bad delivery sometimes, but I just love this particular thing that happens with old Japanese games so much
especially since it doesn't happen anymore! They even fixed a lot of these issues as soon as REmake
now that I think about it I actually had an RE1 video about this very topic I have somewhere buried in my Watch Later playlist I should probably check out, maybe it brings up all these peculiarities that happen with these bad Japanese-to-English translations
We all know the infamously terrible voice acting from the first Resident Evil. But how does it compare to the Japanese original? Did anything get lost in translation in this survival horror gem? Let's find out!

Oh good, the entire game in 30 minutes where it took me 40 to finish the mansion
yeah definitely not doing GDQ numbers here myself
also, apparently, Deadly Silence came out 20 years ago as of January of this year! So what perfect timing to play this
hmmmm... have I perhaps been hoarding too many items...?
ah I'm sure it's fine
You could open a weed dispensary with all those herbs
THERES ANOTHER GODDAMN SPIDER
I THOUGHT THAT WAS OVER
I can’t omgg
THERES ANOTHER ONE
Barry nooooo!!
there's... there's no reason for me to go on wh- what am I fighting foooooooorrrrrrr
I never got the bad ending in REmake this feels so strange I played it like I usually do
oh hey Moira
You're gonna get to hang out with Claire when you're older
wow it really just.... ends like that huh
Just getting out of there, no explosion, no blowing up the Tyrant
I really wonder what I did wrong to get this ending because I played it pretty much the same way I play REmake
No cool end screen art of Jill hanging out in her apartment, just.... just your stats
and the black void....
...... I'm gonna play it again
I have to get the good ending dammit
It was the rope????!!!
I had to wait for him to drop the rope down the hole after the Yawn boss fight....
really Barry? It bothers him that much that I think he just ditches me in a hole huh
Oh you meet Barry down here if you wait for him
I also got the Magnum I had forgotten the first time
don't know how I missed that
interesting this choice about whether Barry should go ahead before you in this underground path is a lot more complicated than it seems
in REmake it's very simple to keep Barry alive, and whether or not he trusts you mostly relies on static choices, so it's interesting to see how this originally worked
can't quite tell which one is better, there's a lot of obtuseness to this original way but it does feel a little more interactive and natural than ''do you trust barry >yes >no''
yeeeaahhhhh
Waow, you only get the choice to save over your final save file if you get the best ending? That's crazy
the auto-aiming really makes this fight a breeze with the magnum, super thankful I actually got it this time (though, I totally over prepared for this... By the end of the game my item box was full
)
it's crazy to think that they didn't have the auto-aim feature originally, at least for the US version, the Japanese version had it, and they included it in Director's Cut after
I can't imagine playing this without auto-aim, or quick turn for that matter! It's just so useful, really really cool that we have a technical remake of RE1 original with all these little QoL improvements
Nice, I actually ended up saving tons of time with that run
that was fun
Just realized im missing a game
My collection is incomplete
I also realized i bought code veronica but i never finished it or re5 so im do those too
It feels like the zombies on the second floor of the mansion have more health
Oh that's a really cool detail
Leon's so sick of this shit
Yeah definitely
Leon is the "aw shit, here we go again" GTA meme.
Purely in terms of attention to detail and animation quality yeah Capcom has been doing crazy good work since DMC5
I don't really follow the news for Requiem, weirdly enough I'm just not that hyped about it as the entire world seems to be, but I did already come across 50 billion posts about that hand shake thing, but something I haven't seen is the attention to detail they put in something like what if you immediately fire a shot after getting grabbed, which you can see Leon do in the showcase, the player fires a shot from the hip immediately after getting bit and it actually has a unique animation where he sort of limps his arm up and shoots with one hand before fully recovering and shooting with both hands
i wish i could eat resident evil 2 remake burger
fuck this is good
I finished my RE2R Leon playthrough, now I'm going to do a Clair playthrough
Chris as a bigfig is taking me out
It's such an awesome concept, but unfortunately Lego doesn't like to do stuff based off of mature content
😔
don't people's faces get melted off in Indiana Jones?
Yeah
. They just don't want to do anything from R or M rated media
And no realistic guns, or tanks, just Star Wars ones
Raiders is still only rated PG afaik
yeah that made me crack up
Is the pc port of the original RE4 good?
Why wouldn't it be?
Idk
The original Ubisoft port of RE4 was really bad, but we're talking 2007-2008, the versions available today are perfectly fine

I would highly recommend installing the ''RE4_tweaks'' mod if you're going to be playing on PC
It's not a very intrusive or complicated mod at all, it's basically just to make the game smoother to play and it has various options to play around with if you wanted to mess around with them, from alternative gameplay options like an RE6 style or RE5 style movement for playing it more comfortably with a mouse and keyboard, tweaks to the aiming with mouse, or just fun stuff like changing the color of your laser pointer and various adjustments to other things

Finished RE8 for the second time
im watching JSE play RE9 and holy shit is Leon so fucking cool in this game

man Grace is just having the worst time in this game
||genuinely thought Grace just got her leg cut off when the elevator fell||
|| https://youtu.be/-kOlDs0DIwA?si=CO3yLiq7eh-QvYUn ||
Spoilers for The Final Puzzle
Solved by myself and Rantsycancy
On your second playthrough with the doll, make sure to scan the hand in order to input the puzzle code again.
Thanks all. Shoutout to r/thefinalpuzzle for their help
seems like it was solved, unfortunately, not by normal means
the community had been hard at work trying to decipher what the fuck to do with this puzzle, and it seems like a completely unrelated Pokémon streamer accidentally solved this puzzle, without even knowing what he did, and then other players pieced together the steps, but the actual overarching puzzle remains yet to be solved
so this is a bit of a bummer
RE9 ||oh man this RPD level....||
||i always thought the "Welcome Leon" banner in RE2 was depressing but some of the stuff in RE9 is even sadder||
||MR X ??????????||
|| yes but no, ''Mr. X'' is a Tyrant T-00, this was a Tyrant-503 ||

||Leon's gameplay looks like it would be awesome for a Mercenaries, so hopefully||
||Why the hell does Zeno get powers from the T-virus, when all Leon gets is coughing fits😭 ||
poking around the Steam Deck subreddit it appears this will make it run much better on Deck which is nice
Not spoilering because this is literally from the intro it's even on the trailers for the game
......huh
A lot of people are theorizing that || Leon and Sherry are engaged ||
but I don't think that's entirely true because || Sherry's ring is in her pinky, not in her ring finger ||
|| they are also not the exact same ring design, which would make it even more confusing considering it's not explained at all ||
very interesting

a video full of points I completely agree with but made by someone who I think got a little bit too extremist and annoying
at the very least I think this is a much better and more level headed video on RE4R than the previous one which I felt was made more with spite and came out way too soon after the game for it to feel like a super fair assesment, I feel like now that the dust settled and he, ironically, remade that RE4R video, as well as directly addressing some of the... feedback he received from that video, this is a much better one even if I still feel like some parts still come off as a bit too extreme
I do still appreciate what the remakes are doing in that they're essentially re-capturing that whole cultural phenomenon that happened with the original releases, I like that they're offering a more cohesive experience between all their modern games which makes it easy to jump from one to the other, I don't really share the view or agree with the idea that they're soulless cashgrabs made by complete hacks and an insult to gaming, Capcom has done nothing but incredibly polished high quality stuff for years now since RE7
even RE3R which is by far their worst remake still is a very high quality polished action horror game all the way through, which is why this conversation is so difficult because someone plays it without the context of the original and wonders why people hate it because it's a genuinely good game on its own if you ignore the original completely
I don't think these are like affronts to god but I do still share the view that they're generally watered down versions of what the original games are and I do definitely think people are way too hyped because playing these games is like a huge social event and they can't really accept any of their shortcomings
There's a really nasty attitude a lot of people have where they seem to almost hate the original games and only really tolerated them before, they'll go on talking about how finally these games are fixed and now there's no need for the originals anymore, and if you ever preferred the originals then you're just someone blinded by nostalgia, something that's incredibly funny because I actually got super seriously into RE after 7 came out when I was still a teenager so that whole thing kinda doesn't work at all with me
I don't know it's a very nasty weird attitude that's so pervasive nowadays especially in social media that I really really dislike and don't share at all and it's kinda soured my whole view of the remakes retroactively as a result which kinda sucks
luckily I have achieved a nice balance with my usage of social media in the past few years so I don't really hang out in or pay any attention to websites with a lot of infammatory 'fandom' discussions like that at all, I'd much rather focus on select few people and more personal sharing of ideas and discussions like talking about the RE games over here instead which I find overall more productive and interesting than hurling insults at some random on a thread that doesn't matter, but every once and again I will encounter some of those opinions in the wild and it genuinely bums me out people are so quick to behave like this still
I will say one thing: oh my god I'm so happy this video actually addressed important things like Ashley actually being much more difficult in 4R and how awful it feels to control Leon I could not believe how actually strange it felt to maneuver Leon around in 4R, it's so weirdly sluggish and there's a ton of weird interactions with animations and stuns and interruptions in your movement that it's genuinely baffling, the original feels so much snappier and responsive in comparison, it's something I have seen nobody talk about and it has been driving me absolutely insane for years because I thought I was going crazy but no, everyone's just ignoring it I guess
there's apparently mods to make the enemy staggering more consistent in this game and Leon's movement a lot snappier which is crazy to find out about, but they probably make the game feel much better to play
anyways overall I think it's a much better video than his original one about RE4R, much better articulated points and feels less spite-fueled now that more time has passed and we can assess these games with a more logical hype-less brain
now look at this video of Grace giving herself a dozen concussions because someone messed with the animation cancelling

Oh my goodness this video confirmed the theory I had from before that I read from one random comment once
Yes the dialogue in the original RE's is not the best and it's totally because VAs for videogames specifically weren't great the time but also: I totally believe they were enunciating their sentences super weirdly so Japanese people could talk along and practice their english that way
I'll see yall in sixteen hours 🤷♂️ one way or another im tapping in
I want Jill and Rebecca to show up again
re6 didn’t save..now i gotta redo..the whole fucking thing again.
willingly playing RE6
why would you do that to yourself?
Is it that bad? I've not actually played that one.
On every other metric that isn't the value you get out of the fun shooter gameplay loop everything else is either mediocre, mind numbingly boring and repetitive or actively pretty bad
even then the only value I would personally say you can get from RE6 is the Mercenaries mode
It's hated and considered bad mostly because it's just not Resident Evil, even with my distaste for the remakes I'll say even a game like RE4R and hell, even Requiem, manages to actually fulfill the horror-action balance way better than anything RE6 could've ever hoped to achieve, so as a Resident Evil game it was already not good
But as a game itself, I mean... the campaigns are just not great, and there's four different campaigns that are not really that much different when you compare them, so now you have to play the same boring game four times in a row to get the whole story, if you even cared enough to actually see it all the way through anyways
Me personally I consider the Revelations spin-offs to achieve what RE6 wanted to do much better, the campaigns are actually interesting, it has fun co-op elements, and they at least try to incorporate some horror and RE elements back into the gameplay with backtracking, puzzles and somewhat interconnected maps, much more in Rev 1 but to a certain degree in Rev 2 as well, Rev 2 suffers a lot from being the first game to dial it back after RE6 so it shares a lot of DNA with that game but I still think it does a much better job, it's basically a PS3-360 gen version of RE4R gameplay wise
