it's a good example of where the remake makes the whole scene much easier to take seriously with a handful of small tweaks: Leon does try Spanish, and he finds the bloody id first

#

oh, and the first enemy you actually fight in gameplay is one of those sideways head ganados, making it immediately clear they aren't human

median kestrel
#

It tried to do it a bit better but Leon still killed him immediately without trying to clear things up or even attempting to leave his private domicile, he just kicked him so hard he snapped his neck rdsnrk

#

Whenever Leon tries to escape from the basement and the ganado is still alive after snapping its neck it's a bit more obvious that something ain't right

#

..... but he still has no idea if the rest are infected too or not

twin hare
#

Have you considered he really likes shooting people?

#

He is a cop

torpid sinew
#

eh, there are a lot of things "wrong" with all the ganados, once you know they're not human it's a completely reasonable extrapolation

#

I also think the way the initial kick was depicted in the remake was trying to give us the impression Leon overreacted because of his traumatic past

#

(and to be fair, in both versions the guy is sneaking up from behind to swing an axe, without any request to leave or other "normal" reaction before Leon turns away)

median kestrel
#

Maybe it's not a good idea to send the rookie cop with extreme PTSD and prone to panic attacks on an extremely important mission rdsnrk

median kestrel
#

Although to be fair

#

on the original the guy goes: ''What the fuck are you doing here? Get out of here, asshole!'' which is a totally reasonable and normal reaction to a foreigner just barging into your home with a gun asking for some shit on a language you don't understand

#

And I love that Leon goes ''Pff, sorry to have bothered you'' like the guy overreacted rdsnrk

torpid sinew
#

oh that I don't remember

#

thaaaaat's right I didn't know enough Spanish for those lines

median kestrel
#

After Leon asks for Ashley the ganado goes ''Qué carajo haces aquí? Lárgate cabrón!''

torpid sinew
#

ok yeah it's a problematic scene in the original, but I still think in the remake the initial encounter is already weird and non-human enough that Leon's in the clear

median kestrel
#

I'll still be annoying about it and say that Leon just entering a home without even knocking is definitely not okay

#

didn't even check if there was a family just having dinner there or something he just went right in

torpid sinew
#

that is true, a knock was missing

median kestrel
#

Also, fun fact

#

Remember how in the intro of RE4R it's mentioned pretty explicitly that a lot of tourists and hikers go missing on the area? Throughout the game you can actually find multiple of these people as well as the girl from the opening of the game, and the entire altar from that opening too

#

They put so much attention to detail that next to her bloody corpse they even put a wagon with all her belongings which clearly indicate she was traveling

torpid sinew
#

I remember the documents describing the abduction but I never thought to look for them in the game world

#

though now that you mention it I do remember an altar or two that are likely to be from that cutscene

median kestrel
#

I like the detail of Leon being very careful with the body of that girl too, I wonder if it's meant to be a callback to the RE2 moment where you see the victim of the Licker

visual bridge
#

c

#

catboy Leon?

median kestrel
#

he carefully lowers the head of the girl rather than just dropping it like that

visual bridge
#

TRUE !!!!!!

#

the tramp stamp mod is legit a pillar of society we would not be able to live without

median kestrel
#

Except they immediately modded Ashley on lingerie in like a day or two of the game dropping lol

#

They were also doing sexy mods of Leon in RE2 and you bet your sweet bippy there's sexy mods of Chris on RE8

#

Also I'd argue Ada's new design is even sexier than the original cocothink I'd need to gather opinions on that to know for sure though

median kestrel
#

Guess we don't need SH2R anymore twimerp

median kestrel
#

RE4R's ending definitely at least teases RE5R but if RE5R ends up being a thing it will either be a complete reimagining of RE5 or yet another transition from survival horror, to action horror, to straight up just action all over again

#

and I'm intrigued to see what Capcom will end up choosing

torpid sinew
#

true, but I'm mostly hoping they take a break from remakes for a while

#

as great as RE4R was I think we're pretty saturated on them

median kestrel
#

If they're gonna give RE5 to the same ''B-team'' that did RE3 we'll be hearing news of RE5R in a year or so

#

Otherwise we'll hear about RE9 first and then RE5R possibly, if they wanna take their time with it

#

Hell maybe we'll hear about a DMC remake or something

#

but I definitely don't think Capcom is going to pause or stop this remake train until they hit the jackpot

#

They're either aiming for remakes as far as they can push it or they clearly want to remake all of their games up until the modern ones like RE6 and in a way completely reboot the entire franchise

torpid sinew
#

have they not "hit the jackpot" multiple times already?

median kestrel
#

you can always get more and they know they can, I probably used the expression wrong though, I tried to say that they're not going to stop until they meet whatever objective they currently have, which is either to push it as far as they can or get to RE6 and reboot the franchise entirely

torpid sinew
#

to be clear I'd be fine with remaking the whole franchise pre-7, though if that's the goal they really should be including some of the non-numbered entries

median kestrel
#

Well they have no plans to remake Code Veronica so numbered entries are the only ones getting remade

torpid sinew
#

how do we know this?

median kestrel
#

Which is extremely confusing if they keep games like CV and Revelations as canon because they probably directly contradict the ''new canon''

visual bridge
#

i wonder what Resident Evil 10 will be like

torpid sinew
#

eh, RE's never been that lore-dense

median kestrel
#

The producer of RE4 explicitly stated they have no plans to remake Code Veronica while RE4R was in development, but they were open to the idea if the opportunity came up

#

However all leads point to RE5 being the next remake, not CV

#

Remaking Code Veronica would be extremely weird after teasing so much of RE5's plot with the end of RE4R

torpid sinew
#

to be clear Ii was not specifically targeting CV with that comment

#

it's not the only unnumbered RE that could be vastly improved upon

visual bridge
#

is CV the one with the shoehorned romance

torpid sinew
#

yes

median kestrel
#

Well if they won't remake Code Veronica which is the one fans are crying and yelling and begging for what hope does Revelations have?

torpid sinew
#

it is?

median kestrel
#

They don't currently seem to have any interest in remaking those games

#

Have you not seen all the people practically begging on all fours ever since RE2R for capcom to remake Code Veronica? rdsnrk

#

People were upset that they were remaking 4 after 3 and not Code Veronica

torpid sinew
#

ok

north skiff
#

Yeah I'm people

#

CV in RE2 engine? Come on

#

That would rip so much ass

torpid sinew
median kestrel
#

rip so much ass? rdlol

#

is that a positive expression? rdsnrk

visual bridge
#

yes

pallid oriole
#

That one actually needs a remake lol

median kestrel
#

I think we're past the ''this game needs/doesn't need a remake'' thing considering nobody really wanted or asked for an RE4 remake since it was already seen as a perfect game (we've seen how that went)

torpid sinew
#

"needs a remake" was always a weird concept anyway

#

probably not a helpful one as far as deciding what games to make (from an artistic or a financial perspective)

median kestrel
#

Well, there are examples of games that ''need'' remakes, DMC2 for example is a game I'd say needs a remake desesperately, it's repeatedly brought up as the black sheep of the franchise, it's the worst gameplay wise and has practically no story at all, and what is there is pretty awful and everyone keeps wanting a remake of that game to finally make it good

#

There's also Dino Crisis which I'd say 'needs' a remake because I'd love for that game to be brought into newer audiences, a remaster would work but Capcom hasn't remastered even their classic games so I doubt it...

median kestrel
#

According to Suzi on the CastleSuperBeast podcast the 'bingo' line now has lore, Hunnigan has a post-it note in her computer about going to bingo friday night at 10 pm
so Suzi theorizes that Leon says the bingo line because he has a crush on Hunnigan and also goes to bingo with her and he says the bingo line because he was just there before the mission

#

Amazing

torpid sinew

#

RE5 might be challenging, RE6 will be even worse to remake

#

At least RE5 is in the right genre

#

That said, the tribal bits probably need to go

Those always felt weird

The rest can go.

#

Oh god this would be a nightmare to actually play with unless it has some form of lock on flutterwaaaugh

#

(but it looks great though)

torpid sinew
#

it also really shows how much level design impacts camera design; in this video the angle switches every 5-10 seconds because the game just doesn't expect you to spend that much time in any single room or hallway, so it'd get obnoxious pretty fast (even in RE1-3, these angles and the door transitions are occasionally annoying in the late game when you need to backtrack across half the map that you've already cleared)

median kestrel
#

I think that's a super easy fix by either making the camera angles flow into each other with the camera panning and moving or going the Silent Hill route of long drawn out camera angles with the ocassional change or just giving you a semi manual third person camera from behind and changing angles indoors or just sparingly

#

This type of super static fixed camera isn't the best even by the time RE3 came out it was outdated I think, I mean Dino Crisis and Silent Hill 1 had come out by that time iirc

torpid sinew
#

right, I do still think that no game benefits from strictly fixed angles all the time, now that we don't need to pre-render backgrounds; the best angle fixings will be situational

median kestrel
#

Yeah super static fixed camera isn't great I agree

#

Allowing the angles to flow into each other also helps mitigate the problem of "I was aiming in one direction, camera changes and now I gotta adjust my movement for a second after the change"

median kestrel
#

I wonder what's wrong with RE4's lighting?

#

I've seen plenty of comparisons of RE4R with other RE games like RE6 and original RE4 and something about the lighting of RE4R is messed up

I like how even the zombies forget they are in a zombie based movie and try to grab the gun away like they are an action movie antagonist

median kestrel

It's weird because the zombies repeatedly overwhelm Chris and Leon enough times that they gotta be lightning quick and precise but they also don't swarm them and wait for their turn like videogame characters rdsnrk

But I will say a zombie just grappling Chris only for Chris to clock him in the jaw and do a wrestling move breaking its neck is badass

Chris is throwing around zombies like bags of potatoes

it's only a faint memory but when I was a child I remember this was my introduction to Resident Evil alongside RE4

it's so weird looking back on this, the Outbreak games are oddly advanced for their time, they play out like RE5 except in a classic survival horror manner, so fucking cool

#

Resident Evil Resistance 100% should've been Outbreak File #3 and played out with a classic survival horror style like this, holy fucking shit that would've been the bomb, and in 2020 when everyone was on lockdown? Jesus

It's pretty fucking good and extremely underrated, although I guess the fact that it's a co-op multiplayer experience added to why it never quite got super popular despite being an extremely solid experience

#

And why it would be amazing nowadays

#

also a lot of my gripes with old survival horror stuff are fixed in this game mostly the controls and camera which I find to be excellent even if sometimes they can lack some of the creative angles some of the other games have

#

But it's really nice every character is pretty unique and playing it with people is probably a very fun experience especially friends

Oh I guess not, I guess it was just online

#

but yeah I guess it never caught on and I guess other games and services were a lot more popular at the time like Halo 2 which released at the same time, it was just too early for these types of games, it was too ahead of its time I suppose

Interesting thoughts from Takayoshi Sato I found yesterday while I was doing a little bit of research on the guy
It's honestly a sentiment I somewhat agree with and I think it's why I love and am so defensive over classic survival horror format and why I don't like it becoming 'standardized'

#

also if anyone doesn't know Takayoshi Sato is the character designer and CGI director of Silent Hill 1 and 2, he's the one who modeled and made all CGI cutscenes for SH1 and had to literally live and sleep on Konami's offices to get it done, the man is a legend
When discussing the atmosphere of the games and the town, iconic scenes like James' mirror scene, the feeling of the characters, this is the guy you gotta thank for that, he intentionally wanted the games to have an off putting but alluring feeling

#

also I'm posting this here because the silent hill channel is practically deserted rdsnrk

#

I honestly think it's a shame that it seems like neither Konami or Bloober has contacted him to be part of the remake, Bloober keeps saying they're in works with the 'original team' but so far they've only mentioned Masahiro Ito and Akira Yamaoka which is awesome but that's not really enough, those two aren't all of team silent

#

I'm glad RE4R had Shinji Mikami, I feel like having super key members like main directors and writers helps ensure that the remake of a game will be great

ripe kernel
#

I agree with everything you said. But. Even original directors can have really bad takes. Yoshio Sakamoto, who basically is Metroid, directed Other M and said he has no regrets. He made the exact game he wanted to. And it was terrible lol.

#

I'm cautiously optimistic about SH2.

median kestrel
#

I don't disagree, the original directors or writers of a game doing sequels or coming back can sometimes end in disaster, it has happened before where they do a sequel or a remake and it just completely misses what made the original so great

#

I'm not excited about SH2R personally, not a little bit. If it ends up being good it'll be a nice surprise, but I don't trust Konami, I can't bring myself to put my trust in them again, and Silent Hill hasn't been great since SH3

median kestrel
#

the fact that it takes place in japan is also interesting, very interested in seeing what the hell that game is gonna be about, if it ever ends up finishing of course, we've only really seen announcements and nothing else from all these projects

ripe kernel
#

visual bridge
#

i thought PT was awesome and was excited for Silent Hills but then that got cancelled izzyscrunch

#

median kestrel
#

one of the weirdest takes I have is that I always thought PT was extremely overrated

visual bridge
median kestrel
#

now I don't hate it at all, I loved it

#

I just think it's super overrated

visual bridge
#

I think PT is one of the best horror games ive ever seen

torpid sinew
#

fair, PT is "overrated" in the way that many other legitimately great and lots of unfinished/unmade games are overrated; the rating is often beyond what any actual work could hope to meet

median kestrel
#

yeah I definitely don't think it's even close to being one of the best horror games

#

it was pretty good but I think people put it on too much of a pedestal

#

especially when it was pretty much a walking simulator, it wasn't a full game of course but that's why I think it's overrated, it was just a snippet of a concept they were working on and it was pretty good for what it was

visual bridge
#

i just wish i lived in the univers where Silent Hills came out

twin hare
#

Death Stranding is a revolutionary horror game

median kestrel
#

sure

torpid sinew
#

I'd call Death Stranding a visionary game of mixed or unclear genre, but not "revolutionary" (it's not exactly an easy one to imitate or borrow key elements from)

twin hare

It revolutionizes the horror genre by introducing the concept of mundane existential horror

torpid sinew

I wouldn't recommend actually doing a playthrough with them, it's a very cool gimmick but these games were built with OTS in mind and not fixed camera, a lot of things will be significantly harder unless the mod somehow allows for aiming with OTS while still having the fixed camera which would actually be pretty awesome

ripe kernel
#

Yeah I rely pretty heavily on the auto aim in the later fixed camera games.

#

It's why I'm sourcenext pilled, and don't touch the PS1 versions of the classic trilogy

median kestrel

A mix between fixed camera and OTS aiming would be perfect

It's not the first time that format has been thought of and even RE has tried it before with games like Dead Aim

ripe kernel
#

I think the hookman RE4 beta was like that. It looked like a good system

median kestrel
#

It's either that or now that dual pads have existed for decades you could allow for movement and aiming while you're aiming with the pistol

#

maybe left pad is movement around and right pad is aiming up and down

#

but honestly when it comes to survival horror combat isn't the main thing for me izzyscrunch so I never had any issues at all with the lock on simple aiming of survival horror games

#

Signalis allows for movement because you can't aim down or up, you can only aim and stay still for better accuracy which is an interesting system

#

Better accuracy pretty much guarantees more chances of critical hits or higher damage I suppose, so it's a nice tradeoff, there's also not really a lot of enemies that require insane movement or combat skills like in RE where you have characters like Mr X's final form flutterwaaaugh

#

RE3 tried to mitigate this problem with the dodge mechanic which I honestly think works great and is a good addition, the only downside is that Nemesis is a bit too aggressive and it can sometimes be extremely hard to get the hang of it but it can totally be done

ripe kernel
#

Do you mean original re3 or remake? I thought the dodge in the original was really finicky, but I'm a RE3 scrub

median kestrel
#

the original, I never had any issues with that dodge mechanic other than me having bad timing

#

the timing window should be a bit more forgiving but other than that I found it pretty good and useful

ripe kernel
#

Yeah I just never learned the timing lol

#

When I got it it was cool

#

I speedrun REHD, so that's where the majority of my classic RE experience is

median kestrel
#

I need to do a new run of that one, I could probably do a much cleaner run now that I beat it once

#

kinda wish 2 and 3 got the same treatment as that game, to preserve that classic formula and not modernize them

ripe kernel
#

I really like the remakes as they are. In a perfect world we'd get both.

#

At least with 2 I feel like the survival horror was retained despite the new gameplay. 3 was more actiony, but so was the original.

median kestrel
#

None of the remakes are bad games, even 3 isn't a bad game by itself, I just really like the classic survival horror format and I kinda wish 2 and 3 got that same treatment for being classics and from 4 onward we'd get a more modernized take

#

RE4R is excellent for example

#

literally perfect at least in my eyes

ripe kernel
#

Me too

#

I'm baffled they haven't at least done an official rerelease of the original 3 on modern platforms.

median kestrel
#

Yep

#

If they at least did HD re-releases of 2 and 3 I would be a lot more positive on remakes of 2 and 3

#

but for some reason they haven't done that

ripe kernel
#

For reals. The best way to play 2 and 3 are fan-patched abandonware, which is not convenient for new players.

median kestrel
#

Yeah I played 3 with the Seamless HD Project on Dolphin and it's gorgeous

ripe kernel
#

Yeah that too

#

Capcom has done a great job with their classic games collections they've been doing. They just put out the definitive way to play most the rockman.exe games

#

So they're more than capable, and likely willing

torpid sinew
#

huh, for me the RE3 dodge was infuriatingly random and the main reason the Nemesis fights sucked

median kestrel
#

So the game doesn't tell you this very well but there's two ways to dodge, one of them is by tapping the aim button when an enemy is about to attack, the other is while you're holding down aiming pressing an 'action' button while the enemy is attacking

#

it's actually really easy to understand if you just look at the clip examples here, no need to read all the stuff but it does explain it very well

#

If you don't know there's two ways to do it I can see why it may seem... unreliable? or kind of random

#

I managed to get it to work pretty consistently, I never had issues with the mechanic

I just suck at the game in general! starlightgrin

torpid sinew
#

I think I was aware of this, but since the dodge-while-aiming button is also the shoot button and only does a dodge when you're being attacked, there's no safe way to experiment with that version of it

#

once I hit the unavoidable Nemesis fight I realized it expected me to dodge and spent several deaths trying to get it to work there, but it just didn't

#

in the end the only strategy that worked was furious button mashing to get at least a few dodges to work while firing all my grenades, and then reloading every time Nemesis felt like killing me anyway

visual bridge
unborn fable
#

this looks like a gender swapped wenclaire from Wednesday art and i have no idea what about it gives it that energy other than haircolour

median kestrel
#

I hate that these movies are so awful because whenever they adapted the games' content they did it well

#

They COULD have adapted RE1, RE2 and RE3 into movies, they just chose not to

#

and that infuriates me abflat

visual bridge
median kestrel
ripe kernel
#

As disappointed as I was about the missing content, RE3 remake made Carlos 1000x better (and hotter)

median kestrel
#

I legitimately don't think I'll ever be able to truly forgive Capcom for how disappointing RE3R was

#

Not only in terms of missing content but missing what that game was going for entirely with its design

#

A very open map, even for RE standards, a non-linear way of progressing and witnessing many different story events including characters fates, ''random'' Nemesis boss fights that you had to either win or escape from, and randomized items making each playthrough unique

#

And not for a second did it stop being scary, at least for me, that's why even though I grew up on RE4, after playing the OG Nemesis it's now my favourite RE game

ripe kernel
#

I agree with all of that. I still enjoy RE3make despite its flaws. It's a fun action game, and Jill and Carlos are hot

median kestrel
#

That's the thing, RE3R is not a bad game in itself

#

In isolation, it's not a bad game at all, it's not unfinished or anything, and it's a perfectly enjoyable horror action shooter
It's just when you see it in the context of not only the RE franchise and the other recent remakes but also the original game it's supposed to be remaking that it starts to fall apart

#

and yeah I don't hate new Jill but Julia Voth will always be Jill for me

ripe kernel
#

I was devastated when I found out there was no branching paths

#

Worse than RE2make not having the zapper system

#

But some moments are so dang good. I love nemmy grabbing Jill off the ladder, and I love when she says "bitch can't even swim"

median kestrel
#

They originally weren't planning on adding the zapping system to RE2R at all until people complained about it close to release which is why in RE2R the zapping system is all sorts of fucked and unfinished

#

it has some good moments, but ''next time take the fucking hint'' just doesn't hit as hard as ''You want STARS? I'll give you STARS'' as a finishing move line

ripe kernel
#

Yeah it was weird that they moved the line

#

I was like "you're saying that now??"

median kestrel
#

the funniest part is that not only is it completely out of place in the moment they put it in but Nemesis can hit you and completely interrupt that line

#

''You want STARS? I'll-- oof!''

ripe kernel
#

Lol

median kestrel
#

It's like they wanted to make a completely new original game with only small glimpses and hints of the original game, I felt the same when I heard the 'original' save room theme in RE3R, it's so diluted and it's such a minimalist version of that song it's legitimately upsetting, it's like new modern games are afraid of good music to accompany the gameplay, at least specifically these remakes, almost all songs and music are entirely ambient in nature and you'd never ever hear an iconic classic tune like the old games had

#

it's kind of sad at least for me

ripe kernel
#

4 remake has great music tho

#

Del Lago goes nuts

#

I was also disappointed they cut Operation Mad Jackal, even after keeping RE2s subgame and even adding ghost survivors.

#

Instead we got the asymmetrical multiplayer game whose name I can't even remember

#

RE-something

#

Resistance

#

Really did not like that game (outside of the new girls and Alex Wesker being in it)

median kestrel
#

Yeah, it was a disaster no mercenaries and the shitty REsistance thing added on to justify the 60 dollar price tag

#

meanwhile RE4 over here added Mercenaries mode for free discool

#

and it also has a banger soundtrack too thankfully, RE4R was beautiful

#

It's a real shame honestly because RE3R had potential to be the best one yet, but I guess it failing so hard was 'good' in the sense that Capcom KNEW for damn sure that they could not mess up RE4

ripe kernel
#

They can make it right by rereleasing a definitive version of the originals flutternod

median kestrel
#

i've been saying that for a million years nobody's listening to me flutterwaaaugh

#

they still haven't re-released RE1-2-3 as HD remasters or hell even just good old timey ports for people to experience them nowadays too on modern consoles and pcs

#

the only one that's easily accessible is RE1 HD which is dirt cheap nowadays and is still the perfect remake

ripe kernel
#

I love REHD. I had a goal of finishing the game under an hour, but it's HARD.

#

I know I can do it, just need to dedicate some time to running again.

median kestrel
#

I need to do a playthrough on hard so I can unlock Jill's RE3 outfit

#

I'd do a Chris playthrough but Jill is bae rdwut

#

sorry Chris

ripe kernel
#

Chris is way harder imo. Gotta deal with less inventory AND small keys (so even less-er inventory)

#

Or old keys or w/e. I don't run Chris lol

visual bridge
#

Chris is hot

median kestrel
#

not RE1 Chris

#

he looks almost too ordinary

#

visual bridge

median kestrel
#

the wild difference in character design is why they went with Chris' '''''weird'''' face in RE7 because they wanted a closer appearance to the original Chris

visual bridge
#

ahh

median kestrel
#

To be fair

visual bridge
#

AGH

median kestrel
#

RE1 Chris is like 20 something so he's still a young lad

#

So his appearance in RE5 was very drastically different but it's not only the most popular iteration of Chris but also it's not too different, just beard, different hairstyle and roided out

#

Even RE7 and 8 Chris don't look TOO different

#

but yeah, wider frame, wider face and that kind of faux hawk ish hairstyle is just what most people recognize as Chris Redfield now

ripe kernel
#

8 does look like an evolution of 6

#

7 is weird

#

I remember he referred to himself as Redfield, and at first people weren't sure if it was even Chris or not

median kestrel
#

7 is what Chris would've looked like back in RE1/Code Veronica, putting him inbetween the older and changed Chris from 6 and 8 was a bad move

#

They realized that and changed him back in 8 thankfully

ripe kernel
#

7 had a lot of very uncanny faces

It worked amazingly well on the Bakers, but Mia always looked weird

6 gave us adult Sherry wearing kid Sherry's clothes, and I will never be able to thank capgod enough for it.

median kestrel
#

Oh right Sherry, I forgot she returns

#

probably because I never played 6

ripe kernel
#

6 is okay

#

I am in love with the core combat mechanics. I still play its Mercenaries every once in a while.

#

I think it is worth playing, and having a friend definitely softens the blow

median kestrel
#

the low poly costumes in RE6 are fucking amazing though rdsnrk

#

but yeah Sherry's alt school uniform costume is nice, Helena also has some great ones littlepipblush

#

at least they brought back Sherry, I wish they brought back more characters often, characters like Ashley Sheva and Carlos just disappear from the story entirely and you never hear from them again

ripe kernel
#

I would like to see them go to Africa again. I want Sheva and Josh Stone to be married and running BSAA operations there.

like, most RE main characters are these super competent, militarily trained people (not that that's a bad thing, it's super cool actually), and while Ethan does get military training between RE7 and RE8, for the most part he's just kind of a guy. a super dorky guy who laughs at his own dumb jokes and really cares about his wife (and then child in RE8) that he would go insane lengths to save them

north skiff
#

That's a good explaination

#

I like

median kestrel
#

Ethan was way too good for Mia

#

Mia was like the entire reason why 7 happened, at best she was a very neglectful and stupid person that had no idea of the scope of what she was doing, she should've died in place of Ethan, and I don't just mean because I don't like her and think she's an awful manipulative person but because that would've shown she was willing to be responsible for her actions and sacrifice herself to stop the mess SHE helped start
Instead she's the only one left alive, always blaming other people and adding onto Chris' already heavy mind by nearly blaming him for Ethan's death sweetiegrump fuck that

RE8 was pretty wacky and weird

ripe kernel
#

I want them to make a game around Spencer, Marcus and some other guy going to Africa to get the flowers to make the progenitor virus in the 1960s

median kestrel
#

the only bad thing I hav eto say about the RE8 DLC is that it's so painfully predictable

#

and somehow Mother Miranda in that was worse than in RE8?

#

I felt like her dialogue was almost reaching cartoon villain levels of ridiculous

#

But the actual gameplay was good, it was tense and full of horror

ripe kernel
#

You mean you knew who Michael was the literal second he showed up?

#

(sarcasm)

median kestrel
#

No no, more like... it's a super standard plot I guess and I didn't feel like it did anything interesting or anything note worthy

#

I definitely wouldn't tell people to play it for anything other than the actual gameplay which is pretty neat all things considered

ripe kernel
#

It was the most basic self-acceptance arc that could be written

median kestrel
#

It was extremely basic and forgettable yeah

#

and again I felt like Mother Miranda in that was cartoonishly evil

#

I'm talking saying shit like ''You'll never defeat me! Muahahahaha!'' or some super unoriginal villain lines like that

#

I don't know if that was meant to be the real mother miranda or some sort of imaginary Rose version of her or whatever

ripe kernel
#

it was her soul, more or less

#

the memory of her stored within the megamycete

median kestrel
#

also the part where you play alongside Ethan was cool too

#

I feel like there was a possibility to do so much more with the concept of Mother Miranda being able to affect how Rose sees reality, you could really do some Silent Hill ass type shit with that twimerp

ripe kernel
#

I think Miranda is gone, but Eveline is presumably still around

median kestrel
#

I can't remember... doesn't Ethan kill her in 8 too?

I really really like how this game, despite being modern RE already, still retains a lot of classic RE elements like the examining stuff

#

Lots of improvements even over RE4 though, now the knife is something you don't even need to select you can just click the mouse and you'll start a-stabbin' and a-slashin'

it feels really good

oh man the shotgun thing was great

Tale laughed so much when I got there and immediately went GlimHmm and put it right back on the wall

median kestrel

The funny thing is, in any other circumstance that would be the right choice but for that one in particular it's the quickest way to get the shotgun

#

I actually regretted not getting the jill sandwich scene on my last RE1 playthrough because I never went to that room until after I already got the fake shotgun to put there

torpid sinew
#

yeah, once you know for sure what happens it makes sense to go for it

median kestrel
#

Oh wow even the additional pouch upgrades

#

I love it lol

#

I still find the inventory system of this game a bit wonky, I'm glad they didn't keep it for future games but it's not the end of the world, it just feels weird to me

#

they translated 'Helm key' as ''Llave del casco'' (Helmet) instead of ''Llave del timón'' (Helm)

#

Hope someone got fired for that blunder silverstreamsmugiknow

#

It feels strange playing a modern RE game with such strong music after how the remakes cut down on that a lot

median kestrel
#

now this is a resident evil ass moment

#

I had to go to the lower floor to progress so I thought screw that I'm gonna check out what's on the upper floor and sure enough I could go there and after going through a locked door with the little fuse puzzle thingy that's actually not that bad I find a sweet rifle, I also activate something that's very likely gonna make this an arena later on when I come back here ajwhomstdve

also hey finally they started acquiring common sense and outright refuse to even set foot in dank water like this rdsnrk

this was a pretty weirdly unnerving section opaLOLine

#

I was fully expecting the guy around the corner but I was not expecting that voice plus that quick jittering sprint towards me, I was in the middle of reloading and I wanted to switch weapons so badly but fortunately I was backing away

median kestrel
#

Luckily it seems like Revelations 2, which is the next game I'm gonna play, has a built in option to change the reticle for a laser sight!

#

what an amazing setting option, I hate that this game doesn't have that considering the original 3DS version had a laser sight by default, they just got rid of it and added a giant reticle for some reason

#

Unfortunately haven't found any mods to add it back, and I think it would probably ban me from Raid mode since this game has online functions

#

bummer

median kestrel
#

''Jessica! What the hell?! Why did you shoot?!''

#

torpid sinew
#

funny how I find it harder to parse Spanish subtitles when the voices are Japanese instead of English

median kestrel
#

Well it doesn't help that even if it was english Japanese is so different that the sentences probably wouldn't translate 1:1

#

and this is Castilian Spanish too

median kestrel
#

ominous

#

aaaand that's a wrap

#

Pretty damn good!

#

Gotta take it for what it is, a slight return to form after the aftermath of Resident Evil 6 and its consequences and for the 3DS no less

#

For what it is, that was pretty damn good actually

#

Budget constraints and the console of the game doesn't necessarily justify its biggest drawbacks which are that it doesn't fully utilize the mansion-like cruise ship to the fullest and I got really really bored and tired of the constant character switching, we really did not need all those missions with those two BSAA guys even if they were like 10 min short which I appreciate, could've cut them out entirely and made a more engaging story with Jill and Chris instead and utilize the ship enviroment a lot more

#

It definitely feels like the game is trying its hardest to go back to RE1 style stuff but it gets held back because we live in a post RE6 world now so we have to include all this other stuff starlightexhausted but hey, other than that, pretty good

median kestrel
#

Alright let's see what this one has in store now

#

I can see how this game became the template for all the new RE games except Ethan's going forward

#

All of the main core mechanics are here, it's like playing a previous gen version of RE4R

#

Honestly the weirdest part so far for me is the fact that I have no map, despite the fact that I can pick up a map? It only gives me a minimap but no actual full map you can bring up, and it's odd because this is no RE1 but there's still some backtracking and item gathering involved, really weird but hey once again this is from a post RE6 world

I love the single knife slash the cpu did when I switched control to Moira opaLOLine I don't know if the cpu records your actions and mimics them when you switch characters but I loved that, the CPU actually does something in this game and doesn't just stand there!

median kestrel
#

Playing RE1 with Jill's BSAA outfit didn't feel that weird oddly enough, I actually really liked it and I've grown really fond of the design, the RE3 outfit that you unlock after playing Hard mode also looks fantastic but unfortunately I unlocked it after 2 playthroughs and I'm kind of done with the game at this point, I've already done everything in it twimerp bummer

#

I like these costumes but it's like playing RE4R with the emo outfits they had for Leon and Ashley it really sticks out

#

Fortunately the default designs in this game are actually really good so I don't feel the need to change them, Barry and Natalia's costumes are actually pretty bad rdsnrk

#

Funny thing is I actually prefer Moira's default designs by far

I love how most of Wesker's moments in CV consist of him doing a corny villain laugh and going ''Chris!'' in various different ways

#

If I didn't already know of CV's various shortcomings I'd be inclined to play it because I never have but I don't think I would want to, I've already binged so many RE games this past year and I still have to get through Rev 2 (which is very good so far)

#

The only RE I have yet to fully play so I can already say I fully played all main line big games is RE6 but I doubt I'm gonna play that one lol it has like a morbillion campaigns and I am not a fan of that, I already am not a fan of RE5 and that game has more horror than 6 in it

#

At this point I'm just kind of waiting on RE9 but Capcom seems to be wanting to go all in on the remake stuff so I guess it's gonna be a long while before any news on that

torpid sinew
#

I'd still say try CV at some point, the first half (two thirds?) on the island is imo some of the series' best level design, most of my complaints are with story or stuff in the latter part like the softlock problem

#

definitely doesn't have to be on the back of ten other REs of course

median kestrel
#

It's the only other classic RE I've yet to play but all the bad things about it put me off from ever committing to a playthrough, but since it's the only one left I have to play I might as well, maybe someday

#

It's not like I have others to play other than just replaying RE3 or something

#

gonna need to brush up on my directions in japanese for this one

torpid sinew
#

was about to ask if you could understand those bits since they're missing subtitles

#

which game is this

median kestrel
median kestrel
#

I don't know why they're not just RE7-RE8 but hey

torpid sinew
#

huh

#

I knew you'd been playng the Revs but something about that footage had me super confused

#

this looks like a cool sequence though

#

well, at least for me it's clear what she's saying rdsnrk

median kestrel
#

It is, so far the entire game has pretty good sequences and Barry has some of the best ones and I really like the enemy design and variety in his sections specifically, the enemies kind of show how these games were built for co-op in mind which was kind of the big draw of these games and why so many people loved them because they played it with a friend or a partner or something, still can play them alone just fine though, I kind of wish you could see enemies as Barry but it adds to the panic and horror of ''fuck where am I shooting?!''
or cool shots like this discool

#

but yes I can't understand a single word Natalia is saying the only thing I understand is ''soko ni naru''

median kestrel
torpid sinew
#

I think some part of me tried really hard to match it with The Last of Us ppenk

torpid sinew
median kestrel
#

These are the other enemy types Barry has in his sections, despite the big glowing weak spot thing I like that they took cues from the Ooze of Rev 1, namely that A: you don't aim to the head unless there's a weak point there so you sometimes need to aim for the body or limbs and B: the enemies move in very erratic and weird ways making it a lot harder to properly get a good shot as they get closer

median kestrel
median kestrel
torpid sinew
#

I was gonna say, erratic movement making them hard to hit has been a feature I like in many of the remakes (and also Dead Space)

torpid sinew
# median kestrel but also: <:flutterwaaaugh:685079096518377473> ‼️

I think this is the longest clip with the most of her dialogue so I'll use this; her lines are

asoko ni nanika iru (there's something over there)
chikadzuitekiteru! (it's getting closer!)
soko da yo! utte! (there it is! shoot!)
hazureta yo, motto shita ni iru (you missed, it's farther down)
kocchi janai yo, motto hidari (not this way, more left)
atatta yo, sono mama (you hit it, keep it up)
motto hidari
hazureta, koko da yo, utte
hazureta yo, motto shita ni iru
chikadzuitekiteru!

I assume the need-to-know words for gameplay are gonna be:
ue = up | shita = down | hidari = left | migi = right
koko = here | soko = there | asoko = "over" there
and similarly: kocchi = this way | socchi = that way | acchi = "over" that way

#

one of the other clips had a "sugu soko" which means "right there", maybe that's also helpful

#

oh, and ushiro = behind, hopefully they get you with that at least once rdsnrk

median kestrel
#

ah man I'm gonna forget immediately about these

#

I need to write these down in my brain

#

I'm gonna have to listen better for any key words, weirdly enough quick swapping characters isn't as op as you'd think since you see enemies from different perspectives and they obviously move so it's not gonna be on the same position as it was

torpid sinew
#

oh you do have control over when that happens, cool

#

I honestly couldn't tell if that was you or the game

median kestrel
#

Yeah no that would be really annoying and terrible if that was the case rdsnrk you can switch characters by pressing tab when you're playing single player, that's how I combo'd that dude the other day when I was playing as Moira and Claire

#

The CPU is pretty competent too since it does things like natalia automatically picking up any nearby bricks especially if you aim at them, Moira will try to blind enemies you're focusing on and aiming at and if you're playing as Moira the Claire CPU will automatically kick enemies if they're blinded

#

It's not bad

#

Moira having an irrational fear of guns is how they balance it out because otherwise you'd have two characters running around with guns which would probably be too op

#

what a revelation

torpid sinew
#

one of the weirder things about playing RE1 for the first time in the 2020s was "...wait, Wesker just dies? how's he in every other game?"

median kestrel
#

At the time, this was probably seen as a terrible thing because the game released episodically and didn't just release with all the content in it, but I actually really enjoy the tv show-esque ''previously on Revelations!'' thing, this was a thing in Rev 1 too and it's a bit silly but I like it

median kestrel
#

I'm pretty sure the reaction of people at RE4 was about the same considering Code Veronica was/is seen as a smaller game that people didn't pay much attention to in comparison to RE4 and in that one Wesker is just hanging out fully alive

#

I think they actually show how Wesker survives way after the fact in Umbrella Chronicles which came out after CV and RE4 rdwut

#

Looking through some more now and after looking through other opinions as I was playing Rev 1 I find it curious just how many completely different opinions there are about this game

#

I've found people saying ''Rev 1 is so much better than Rev 2!'' as much as I've found peopel saying ''Rev 2 is way better than the first one!'' rdsnrk

#

I say this because I was going to mention how I'm actually enjoying the story of Rev 2 quite a lot and I got curious and looked up some opinions people have on the games

median kestrel
#

mou saiyakuuuuu!!! izzysadness

#

I don't even know if that's what she actually says but I can't quite figure it out, but I love that it's this thing she keeps saying especially in this chapter when shit happens

#

Some people really didn't like Moira and still don't but I honestly love her, the fact that she's so crass fits so well with her punk teenager persona she's got going on

torpid sinew
#

yep, it's mou saiaku

#

saiaku being the opposite of saikou

median kestrel
median kestrel
#

it's not so much RE1-2 levels but there's a lot of ''here's this area, you're gonna need some items and come back later so get s'plorin' '' or ''here's this room figure out the puzzle''

#

I like it

torpid sinew
#

yeah 最悪 saiaku is literally 最 most 悪 bad/evil, while 最高 saikou is 最 most 高 high, but they're both pretty informal these days so "the best/worst" are decent definitions with lots of adaptation options like "sucks"

#

saying saiaku a lot in that tone of voice is very stereotypical teenager lol

median kestrel
#

this sequence at the end of the whole thing is also pretty rad, the transformation sequence is surprisingly eerie and holy hell did the guy get some mass
I actually messed up a ''choice'' at the end of this chapter that I feel compelled to go back to do again just because I think that other choice makes for a much better story but it probably doesn't matter that much

median kestrel
#

it's charming in a weird way

torpid sinew
#

considering this is RE and they're actually in a terrible situation, it's a lot easier to empathize with then the more typical stereotype of teenagers complaining about totally mundane stuff at school or the mall or whatever

#

like every time one of these games has a recurring boss that refuses to die from fatal blows and the protag goes OH COME ON

median kestrel
#

Yeah I kind of assumed it meant something like that because translating it to ''fuck!'' felt a bit strong or like it doesn't translate the frustration well enough, weirdly enough ''joder'' translates it pretty well if my idea of saiyaku is correct

#

in the english dub she yells out ''fucking statue!'' with a pretty comically squeaky voice rdsnrk

torpid sinew
#

to be clear I think "fuck yeah/no" and such are perfectly fine adaptations of saikou/saiaku if it fits the character

median kestrel
#

I wanted to try a knife only run after I ran out of bullets, but ammunition and resources are shared throughout episodes here so I thought maybe let's not handicap ourselves for the next final episode rdwut

torpid sinew
#

atsui = ardiento, not caliente? cocothink

#

ah "burning", not "hot"

#

makes sense

median kestrel
#

''Estoy ardiendo!'' = ''I'm burning!''

#

Funnily this is an example of the differences between Spain Spanish and Spanish elsewhere, in most latin american dialects it wouldn't be incorrect to say ''Estoy ardiendo'' but it would probably be way more common to hear something like ''Me estoy quemando!''

torpid sinew
#

..."I am burning me"???

median kestrel
median kestrel
torpid sinew
#

maybe I'm being too literal but I don't get why both "me" and "-oy" would be there

#

oh well, my spanish is mierda anyway

median kestrel
#

Me estoy (x) = I am (x)

Me estoy cambiando = I am changing
Me estoy levantando = I am getting up

torpid sinew
#

not Yo estoy?

median kestrel
#

It wouldn't be incorrect to say Yo estoy (something something) but it sounds way too formal in the same way you wouldn't say ''I am getting up from the bed'' and you'd just say ''I'm getting up'', it's like how sentences are phrased in learning textbooks where it's not wrong but it's also not how people speak

#

''Me estoy'' or just ''Estoy'' already implies the ''Yo'' (I) part

torpid sinew
#

ok, I see why I was confused now

median kestrel
#

That's why he says ''Estoy ardiendo'' instead of saying something like ''Yo estoy ardiendo'' which would be really weird rdsnrk

torpid sinew
#

I'm used to "me" (in both English and Spanish) always being the object of a sentence, never the subject

#

like in "lo dime"

#

(this is where you tell me that's also gibberish)

median kestrel
#

Lo dime?

torpid sinew
#

ok nvm then izzynothoughtsheadempty

median kestrel
#

rdsnrk sorry

median kestrel
#

sunnybeam d'awww..... man

#

Barry is so awesome

#

best damn dad

#

I took one look at it and I thought ''oh yeah this is definitely gonna be a kill a bunch of enemies section'', but no! It was actually really nice and it was mostly puzzling around and there were minimal enemies, I liked it a lot

#

in the sewers I actually had to look this up, this game has a goddamn zapping system lol, during the sewer parts with Claire and Moira you're supposed to open a gate that in Barry's campaign lets you get an AK that's locked away in there, now I'm wondering what other stuff like this I might've missed

#

Kuso! Koko de kojiyouka, saiakuda!

#

(again I actually don't know if that's what he says ppinkiethonkers )

torpid sinew
#

I believe the key noun in the middle there is

故障【こしょうkoshou】

  • breakdown; failure; fault; accident; out of order
  • damage; hurt
  • objection; protest
#

but otherwise yes that's a saiaku at the end

#

though you'd almost certainly adapt the saiakus differently when he says them rdsnrk

median kestrel
#

That's why I said I wasn't sure if 'fuck' was a good translation even though it can totally be, I want to say it seems like it's a little thing they have in the japanese version but I do appreciate they both say 'joder' in the spanish script

median kestrel
#

I kept trying to translate it but I kept getting nonsense so I knew I was definitely wrong

#

I definitely knew 'koko de' and I knew what that meant but when they say those tricky words I can't figure it out at all
It would probably help if I actually knew some japanese vocabulary and words so I actually have a chance but I haven't worked on that at all yet

torpid sinew
#

to be fair, kojo, kojou, koshou, koujo, etc are all real words and often real homonyms so that one is particularly mean if you don't already know the specific koshou he was going for there

#

even I had to check whether it was koushou or koshou

median kestrel
#

playing through this chapter again to get some stuff I missed including the choice at the end here

#

man I'm survival horror'ing hard rdsnrk

#

and this is after picking up both of their inventory upgrades

median kestrel
#

trauma: defeated

#

damare kusoyaro!

#

I find it interesting they didn't translate it to 'shut up' but instead something like 'go fuck yourself'

#

I guess telling someone to shut up has that same energy in jp

torpid sinew
#

partially because there are multiple command forms (damatte, damarinasai, etc) of which damare is the strongest and... let's go with crudest

#

partially because there's also a kuso yarou right there lol

#

sometimes the swear is more natural as a noun/adjective in one language and a verb/adverb in another

median kestrel
#

I'm unfortunately not too caught up with how rudeness works in jp, surprisingly

#

But I do seem to remember it has a lot to do with how you say what you say, kind of like how calling someone buddy is very passive aggressive

#

From what I remember learning anyway, which is next to zero ppinkiethonkers

#

But yeah the kusoyarou is pretty explicit there

#

"Que te den por culo" is a very Spanish expression there though, knowing about all the different dialects of Spanish and even knowing about US/UK/AU english I completely understand how insults specifically work completely differently depending on language and dialect

median kestrel
#

o-oh....

#

oh no

#

really wish this game kept the item box/typewriter save room thing....

torpid sinew
#

what does it do instead?

median kestrel
#

The ''safe rooms'' in the Revelations games are just rooms with a work bench where you can customize your weapons with different weapon parts you find throughout the levels, it's actually why I replayed these chapters again since this game uses a sort of zapping system pretty hard and some areas you have to unlock on Claire's chapter so that Barry can get to them later, I actually completely missed a rare custom part that I'd have to replay both chapters again to get starlightexhausted

#

Unfortunately these games exist in a post RE6 world so the games don't really allow for the use of stuff like item boxes too much since you're not really running around the same area for 90% of the game and they have a similar episodic and linear structure like RE4, although REV1 does have you run around the ship for pretty much most of Jill's campaign

#

the whole deal with these games and why they're pretty cool is they were the ones to start pulling the franchise back into survival horror after 4-5-6 completely swerved in the action-horror direction

#

the save system is also entirely automatic or checkpoint based unfortunately, I do wish it had manual saves which I think are vastly better but I understand why it's not a thing due to the whole episodic format, every episode takes roughly a little over an hour to complete and it's not a full seamless experience like RE1-2-3 where the manual saves fit better, again it's similar to RE4 but trying to go back to the survival horror

torpid sinew
#

personally I prefer automatic saves in all genres, including anything horror-y

#

I understand that some people make the whole "not knowing if your progress will be lost adds tension" argument, but that's not how it works for me; that kind of design just forces me to take myself out of the experience by asking questions like "how much do I risk wasting hours of my time if I do this the fun way"

#

of course you can always have both manual and automatic saving

median kestrel
#

I actually never heard that before, the way I see it and why I like it is because manual saves is like this way of 'locking in' any progress you made and it works especially well in survival horror where if you were to die now you have that knowledge of knowing where enemies are, what you need to do where you need to go so you can do a cleaner run through, and also you can just reload a previous save if maybe you missed something or you want to maybe do a fight or an encounter better or whatever, it doesn't work as well with an automatic system where it can sometimes be unclear what the game saved and what it counts as progress or what I need to pick up again or whatever ppinkiethonkers I don't really like that uncertainty and 'unreliability' in a way, but again when the game is more like RE4 where it's linear and episodic and you're not exploring and progressing through this gigantic one area and instead you're going through multiple areas and sequences it makes sense to have that system more

torpid sinew
#

ah, see all of those arguments I agree with, and that's why I like having both manual and automatic saves in a game

median kestrel
#

Revelations 1 could've used that system since that game has the ship which is basically an RE1 mansion type area and it actually does have some of that ''hey remember this area from way back in the beginning? now you have something that maybe you could use here...''

torpid sinew
#

the tension thing is what I see people using to argue that the automatic saves shouldn't exist at all, because everything you just said is a reason to also have manual saves, that is not in any way ruined by the presence of automatic ones

median kestrel
#

I think the remakes and new games have both checkpoint systems and manual saves

#

I don't know if it's an option or just built-in

torpid sinew
#

that feels right

#

it's been long enough since I played 4 remake I don't remember for sure

#

I believe it at least had "transient checkpoints" even if they didn't create an extra save file you could reload later at any point

median kestrel
#

RE7 had autosaves but I think that RE7 re-introduced the ink ribbon mechanic on harder difficulties where your saves are limited and the game does not do auto-saves but in normal and easy I think all subsequent games have the same autosave/manual save system

torpid sinew
#

right, I have seen manual saving as a difficulty level thing before

median kestrel
#

So if you were to die you can just reload an auto save but if you wanted to stop the session you probably should lock in all that progress by manually saving sort of thing

torpid sinew
#

though I think that's a pretty huge case of "not what difficulty means"

median kestrel
#

An option to enable or disable it would be nice but I don't know if that could potentially break the game, but the way they decided to do it is to include the fully classic way of saving in the hardest difficulties, RE4R seems to have a limited saves system where you're not limited to saving only at typewriters you straight up have a set number of saves you can do at all

#

Then again we are talking about the hardest difficulties that only the most psychopathic people subject themselves to but I do think an option to have the classic ink ribon or only save at a typewriter system would be nice, maybe make it so that you can only change it in the menu and you cannot change it mid-game, maybe that would prevent any game-breaking stuff

torpid sinew
#

to be clear I have no objection to the option existing

#

you can do all kinds of silly things in non-default options that 99% of players will never even look at anyway

#

but at least when I played the classic REs, I don't think the finite ink ribbon system was a plus for me

#

mostly it incentivized doing a "recon" run of an area where I fully expect to die but want to learn what's there and how much ammo it takes to kill it, and then a "real" run where I try to conserve resources and get all the pickups

#

which I don't think is how they're supposed to be played?

median kestrel
#

If you ask me that's a fully perfectly fine way to play these games, every first playthrough is going to be pretty rough and confusing and not 'optimal', but survival horror rewards you for doing that type of thing in itself, you avoid any unnecessary damage/resource waste or get rid of any enemies in an area you know you're gonna be going through a lot, you get to any key items faster, and in Resident Evil's case specifically you also get better at movement which is a skill in itself

#

Being able to manipulate enemy attacks so you get a safe window to pass through or completely move through enemies is not something you're probably gonna be able to do in your first run but it's the type of thing that these games reward you for knowing because now you didn't take any damage or waste any resources, to me that's a perfectly good way to play lyrathumbsup it's smart and the game rewards you for being smart

#

now if you're talking about saves being limited/finite in the form of ink ribbons specifically I don't really mind that, even during my last playthrough of RE2 like a week ago-ish? I had a bunch of ink ribbons by the end, though I went through the game with some vague prior knowledge so maybe I had an unfair advantage there, but yeah it does end up feeling a little bit redundant, I guess I'm neutral on it because I could go either way

torpid sinew
#

right, also "don't really mind" for me, there were enough ribbons it never became a problem, but it definitely affects play style and as long as we're talking about RE save systems it's an obvious question to ask whether they have a benefit

median kestrel
#

I think for me if I had to pick my gripes with it it would be that it ends up feeling like an unnecessary extra action, I understand that it plays into the whole ''limited resources'' thing and the game punishes you if you save every 5 seconds, but if you're even half good you're probably gonna have enough to save when you need to and it's also annoying to do the whole ''grab ink ribbon, run to the typewriter, save, run back to the box, deposit ink ribbon, NOW you're done'' instead of just saving outright

#

I'm actually surprised it took them until like, RE4 to get rid of ink ribbons because both Silent Hill 1 which came out in 1999 and Dino Crisis in 2000 don't use any sort of ink ribbon type mechanics

torpid sinew
#

oh right I completely forgot they take up inventory space

#

that is annoying

median kestrel
#

Meanwhile both RE3 (1999) and Code Veronica (2000-2001?) still use it

torpid sinew
#

actually wasn't there an RE where ribbons got a special inventory slot? am I imagining that?

median kestrel
#

Not that I remember, but that would be an useful albeit still redundant way to get rid of the 'problem', the only special slots used in RE games are stuff like defensive items in RE1R and I think RE2R

torpid sinew
#

but yes that whole flow is part of the reason a typewriter with no box was effectively no save point at all

#

which I think I only hit once and immediately complained about, but I don't recall where

#

...RE2 sewers maybe?

median kestrel
#

I don't remember right now but there are a few rooms in RE1 where there's no item box like the dining room and those are also effectively ''useless'' save points, you're not anywhere near an item box to get any ink ribbons you saved and there's no way in hell you'd just carry those around when every other safe room has an item box so why would you ever save there

#

I'm sure RE2 has at least one of those too

torpid sinew
#

right, that's part of the reason I used the northeast typewriter in Spencer's mansion sooooooo many times

#

Barry fixing that goddamn doorknob was the best thing he did the whole game

median kestrel
#

Once I'm done with Revelations and now that I mentioned it I'm gonna look into how to set up the Rebirth mod for Dino Crisis because I really wanna replay that again

#

Yeah, fixing that door is easily the most satisfying part of the game, reading that the door is getting more and more broken with every use really makes you think hard on whether or not it's worth going through it or if you wanna go aaaall the way around ppinkiethonkers

#

I'm glad I had an easier time on subsequent playthroughs with my routing and I never got to the point where I fully broke it before Barry fixed it, thank god, that specific safe room is extremely useful and very close to a lot of puzzles, you're going through that area a lot so that door is easily the scariest part of the game

torpid sinew
median kestrel
#

''but will it really get broken though?''

torpid sinew
#

granted even before it broke I consciously spent some ammo clearing out the 2nd floor hallway between that room and the main foyer

#

which at least for me was the clearest single example of "this is exactly how the game wants to be played and it's actually working unlike so many similar games"

median kestrel
#

Mhm, the entire thing is really well designed, I also like to think that because the lower east wing with the dog hallway and the area with the fake shotgun is so ''useless'' that's why they fill it with zombies and even hunters later on rdsnrk
I actually didn't fully clear that second floor hallway in my last playthrough so everytime I had to go through there I was sweating bullets because I had to carefully dodge the guys in there everytime, and later on there's like 3-4 zombies in there in Hard difficulty

#

out of curiosity which other games/sections like that don't work from other games?

torpid sinew
#

oh, well, I don't have specific examples in mind because it's one of those "most games" things

#

it's like asking "so in which games did you have infinite money and nothing to spend it on?"

#

like, obviously a few of the Zeldas are in that list, but no way could I begin to recall every example

#

I guess RPGs are particularly prone to the "hoarded all the consumables until credits" problem, at least the way I play them

median kestrel
#

Oh right okay I just thought you had something specific in mind when you said that, maybe from another survival horror or another RE game or something
I'm now thinking if there's any similar moments from other games, I guess the RPD station has some good moments like that too where stuff just kind of works, I'm trying to think about Dino Crisis which of course also has a ''here's this big ass area you're gonna be running around for a looong time'' but Dino Crisis uniquely has respawning enemies and they also can follow you through areas

#

So you can't quite replicate that same type of situation from RE1

torpid sinew
#

ah right, I just mean "you've gotta think strategtically and manage resources" is a thing all sorts of games say but rarely pans out in practice, often it's little more than "I see an X, time to use the anti-X item"

#

and that's often fine as long as the anti-X item is fun to use

median kestrel
#

It's especially important for survival horror where the entire 'point' and the staple of the genre is to manage resources and think and plan ahead rather than run through the game as if it's an action shooter, Revelations 1 again has some sparks of that that I really enjoyed
Which is why I say that doing a bit of 'recon' ahead and then loading a save and go through that again is a perfectly good way to play, in fact I would go so far as to say that's how it's designed to work, these are games that should and do reward you for being smart about your resources and avoiding any unnecessary conflict or waste, which is why I was really bummed that Signalis actively punishes you for doing that by giving you a '''''bad'''' ending sweetiegrump

#

I appreciate that that game does its whole ending system based on the actions you take throughout the game which reminds me a lot of how SH2 does it, it feels very interactive and 'natural' in a way, but when you punish a very normal way of playing survival horror like that it really bummed me out

torpid sinew
#

I'm not sure any of those endings are the "bad" ending though

#

which I think is essential to a silent (ha) ending choice system like that

median kestrel
#

Not explicitly, and I guess it's still ultimately completely subjective, but I do definitely still believe that the one ending in Signalis is objectively the much better '''''good'''' outcome, unfortunately I don't get the same feeling from SH2 where I feel like every single ending in that game is perfectly satisfying and makes sense as a possible climax for the story and the character

#

I guess I would think differently if I did get that same feeling from Signalis' endings but unfortunately I got an ending that I still perceive as being the worst possible outcome just for playing the game as I normally would play a survival horror namely all the stuff we've been talking about

torpid sinew
#

weirdly I feel sort of the opposite

#

while I wouldn't call any of SH2's endings objectively better or worse, there are a couple of very natural ways I would expect most people to end up ranking them

#

I'm guessing it's because I have a much clearer picture of what was going on in SH2 than I do in Signalis, and I've played/watched more of SH2 including the endings I didn't get myself, so it's much easier for me to judge the other endings

median kestrel
#

You're not wrong, but what I'm trying to say is that while for SH2 I can definitely see any of the endings as a possible outcome and not objectively better or worse, I don't get that same feeling from Signalis unfortunately, and the fact that the entire plot of Signalis is so vague and unclear definitely adds to it because while that stuff is great in some instances it did get to the point where it maybe felt a little too vague whereas SH2 is vague and unclear enough but you can still get a clear idea of what's happening especially after you finish it

#

But then again I tend to take stuff for what it is and I have to take into account Signalis was essentially made by 2 people vs the entirety of Team Silent so there's a bit of a difference here and it's still impressive they got so close to what a team of experienced professionals were able to do

and the vagueness level feels more like an intentional artistic choice than an issue of resources

I guess it's another subjective thing because I don't get the feeling that it's bad necessarily, I just would've liked for some more clarity but the game does vagueness and surrealism a lot lot loot more than SH2 so it could just be fully intentional and I just personally didn't fully like it

#

In Silent Hill even just with the first game you get a sense and a vague idea of how things work and how things operate but with Signalis I still don't think I could fully explain to someone what is even going on because I still have no idea

I think with Signalis vs SH2, the level of vagueness is theoretically similar but harder to break through in Signalis because Signalis' plot has more layers to it

#

with SH2, what really happened to each of the humans in the town is pretty simple once you know what it is, most of the mystery is in all the ways its hinted at

#

with Signalis, although it's hard for anyone to claim to know what the plot is, we definitely have at least the deep space mission, the memories being copied to other androids, various things which might be eldritch abomination effects or rogue telepathic powers effects, so there's a heck of a lot of ambiguity as to what you are and where you are at every single moment of the story

#

while in SH2 even before you figure anything out you're quite unambiguously James Sunderland in Silent Hill, and spooky horror dimensions attached to Silent Hill

That's why I say Signalis has more vagueness to it, the way the entire story plays out and is presented is also a lot more fragmented than it is in SH2, if I were to replay it again which at some point I'm likely going to, I still don't think I would piece together what's happening which is why I say that I, at least personally, would've liked a bit more clarity just so I can at least put the pieces together and sorta get an idea of how things go, but because it involves more complicated stuff than Silent Hill in the form of weird reality-bending psychic powers and possible deep space eldritch entities or whatever in there the vagueness and lack of clarity on how or when things are happening and what's going on makes sense in a way

#

I guess what I'm trying to get at is that it lacks clarity in the part of the story that involves what's happening with the characters whereas Silent Hill makes it so that how things operate or what's even happening with the entities and the town is definitely unclear and vague, but once you put all the pieces together you can at least figure out what the deal is with the characters and how things went down for them, but with Signalis it's just a complete mystery entirely especially when halfway-ish? through the game they do the reveal of ''this isn't the person you were looking for'' and that never gets explained or expanded upon

#

and then there's those secret frequencies throughout specific spots in specific rooms to get the secret ending which... rdsnrk wow

#

which they had to datamine to even figure out it existed at all
