But this also highlights why I love Gemerl so much under Ian's writing.

Cream and Vanilla are his entire world. He already lost Vanilla, and now he's losing Cream, and even though he could help the other heroes fight, his first priority is always making sure Cream is safe and never alone, no matter what.

He's her guardian, but more than that, he's her brother.

Also, fun fact, Vanilla and Vector are two of the only "official" adults in the series' main and supporting cast (the others being Shadow by technicality, Eggman of course, and Abraham Tower; there may be more but I can't think of any off the top of my head besides Professor Pickle).

I say "official", because Sega considers most of the cast to be teenagers. I call bullshit on that. There's no way that Sonic is 15 and Silver and Blaze are 14. There's no way Tails is only 8, he's at least 13. There's no way that Rouge is only 18.

The only age that's accurate is Cream being 6. That I'll buy. The others? Fat chance. The others are all at least in their 20s, I will not be convinced otherwise.

I don't worry too much about the ages of the characters personally, it's not like they're humans anyway, it's really hard to tell what age they're supposed to be or how their aging even works and it really never really is brought up except for Cream who's always getting told to go away because she's a child but never for anyone else, they could be adults, they could be kids, they're so cartoony it could be anything so I don't worry too much about it personally

I started playing a bit of Sonic Gens, just to see how I'd like it, since it came bundled with Shadow Gens and all, and I'm... a bit conflicted honestly
I kind of don't really vibe with Sonic's gameplay at all it's giving me a lot of flashbacks to Sonic Unleashed when I was a kid, it's kinda got that same vibe, but I gotta be honest after being completely spoiled by Shadow Generations I kind of don't really like this gameplay style that much in comparison, I also don't feel fully in control of Sonic at all times like I do with Shadow, he feels very awkward to control since the whole gameplay style is very hardwired on going forward at all times, some jumps feel really awkward to make and I keep messing up since Sonic doesn't have a double jump and has a manual homing attack
It's kind of a shame but fortunately I really like all of 2D Sonic levels so far and it's probably by far my favourite part

I like the little victory dance he does when you get an S rank it's very cute

I mean, it's a game from 2011. Sonic Team had evolved past that exact style a long time ago. Lost World (remember that one?) was entirely different. Forces was similar to boost, but also not. Frontiers was the natural evolution of the boost gameplay, and Shadow Generations was the evolution of Frontiers.

I know, that's why I said I just don't vibe with it too much, it's not that I hate it it's just that I like the other gameplay style more

Shadow Gens and Frontiers to me feel less like an alternative gameplay style and more like Sega realizing the Adventure games were really tight and they should do that again

I'll probably get used to it the more I play, if I intend to 100% Sonic Gens like I did with Shadow, I'm not a stranger to this gameplay style I must've logged in hundreds of hours into Sonic Unleashed as a kid, but it is really funny to see that the feel in gameplay is big enough that my gameplay went from looking like this

really if anything this made me appreciate how good of a job they did with Shadow Gens more, if they keep that up for any upcoming games they got cooking they're gonna have some really good Sonic games in the future

even Michael Jackson loved Sonic, Sonic has managed to stay very relevant to the youth ever since the 90s, even more so now that we got past that period of time where if you liked Sonic in public you were seen as a geek and a nerd in a similar vein to if you said you liked anime

I would probably say that back when he was relatively new Sonic probably was as popular as Mario at the time, but that's an assumption

I also don't remember what the situation was with Sonic 3 and MJ, I don't remember if he was never credited, if he never actually worked on the game's soundtrack, if he did work on it but they didn't end up using a lot of it, something like that

As I understand it, MJ did the music for a few of the zones in S3, and it made it to retail release, but it's speculated that this is the reason that it took a really long time before any remaster of S3/S3&K ever came out. They didn't want to deal with any potential legal headaches

An interesting thing: In 1997, S3&K was officially ported to PC in the form of the Sonic & Knuckles Collection. In it, the songs that are believed to be from MJ were replaced with entirely different, original tracks. At the time, fans believed that this was because of the PC's limited ability to reproduce Megadrive-like music through MIDI.

Fast forward to 2019. A prototype of Sonic 3 was found and dumped/released. In it, people noticed something very peculiar: It had Megadrive renditions of the PC port music! But the PC port came long after the original game, so what's going on?

Turns out, the PC music was, in fact, the original compositions that were meant to go into Sonic 3 before they got MJ on board. This isn't direct evidence of MJ's involvement, but it adds more credibility to it

So now the hypothesis is that they switched out the music in the 1997 PC port because of the same legal/controversy issues

I don't know about Silver and Blaze since both of them are introduced in games where Sonic is present, especially Blaze which is meant to be a counterpart to Sonic specifically, but I can totally see a Shadow spin-off show introducing Rogue and Omega

Maybe following the events of Sonic Heroes' Dark Team story

I could totally see GUN being the ones who repurpose Omega (who in the movie universe was still created by Eggman as a side project but abandoned due to being unstable and too independent) as a means to keep an eye on Shadow.

And Rouge could then join later after hearing about the Master Emerald being in Earth, and Shadow tries to stop her from stealing it with Omega reluctantly in tow, only for the three of them to get caught up in some adventure or another and becoming a full team at the end.

(Hire me Sega/Paramount.)

They're hammering these films out pretty quickly, and each one looks better than the last, yet we've received no reports of crunch from what I can recall (aside from the first one, which was admittedly a bit warranted given that they had to completely redesign Sonic and redo a lot of CGI to make sure the model matched what was happening).

Bear in mind, this is like very early beta stuff, so you're gonna see plenty of quirks.

Several animations are wonky, the transformations feel a bit stiff, the character voice lines happen a bit too often, the camera is a bit too close, and there's some visual bugs here and there (including some pop-in issues). However, I did notice that some of these issues weren't there in the trailer, so it's possible that the build in the trailer is a later build whereas this is an earlier one.

An interesting tidbit: the roster is large, with a lot of characters that aren't yet available (most of whom we know already), and apparently quite a lot more on the way. There's also a lot more vehicle customization, including the ability to pick and choose vehicles from other characters much like Mario Kart.

I also love how quirky and chaotic the racing actually is. The cars bounce around and skid and flip and turn hard, and it looks very much like a return to the more quirky racing of Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing (the first game), rather than the stiff and more realistic racing of Transformed and TSR.

Also, the voice actors sound like they're having a ton of fun too

The music is...interesting. I hope these are placeholders for some of them, because it feels oddly muted and low-vibe compared to TSR's high energy and blood-pumping tracks.

It's not "bad", but I do hope it gets better.

Also, visually it's stunning.

I notice they kept Sonic's voice a little bit lower like in Frontiers compared to previous performances

The little lobby area is cute where you can see the other players joining and do some emotes, hopefully they'll put an option to mute that because I know it could get out of hand with spam very easily

Visually it looks perfectly fine with me, animations look good, Sonic's quills are very bouncy (are his quills way shorter than usual? They're like classic Sonic levels of length at this point), I like that he does the taunting finger wag when he's near other characters and if he manages to push them over or hits them with an item

I'm not really feeling the music either, some stages like E Stadium and the casino area have some pretty good sounds but the rest just kinda blend together a little bit and don't stand out that much, which is a shame because if a Sonic game needs to nail something it's the music
It seems like the music is more like background tracks than anything, I don't know if that makes sense. I mean in the sense that it's easy to not even pay attention to it, not quite ambience tracks but also not the kind of tracks you're ever gonna look up and add to your playlist because they're so hype, the tracks changing mid match if you go through a ring is pretty damn cool, but it's kind of whatever when the track itself isn't really all that catchy

Nah, I totally get this. Like I said, the music sounds fine, it just lacks a lot of the energy we're used to from previous games. Hopefully some of them are just placeholders. I'd hate for all those high energy rock and metal tracks from TSR to not be in here, seeing as this game is supposed to be a celebration of all the racing games.

Oh, also, the Extreme Gear isn't available in the demo, nor are quite a few characters and tracks. There's only 6 tracks in the demo plus 5 Crossworlds sections.

The music is definitely not a placeholder, there's no way, this all looks way too finalized for anything other than minor details to be placeholders, especially something as big as music
if Sega wants to make a good decision here though, they'll allow custom tracks, even if you have to pay for them, I don't care, just let me put some good tunes in here, but since the music seems very dynamic I doubt that's gonna be a thing because it wouldn't work
What I do hope is a placeholder is some UI elements because those black boxes with the plain white text for things like speed are so plain and bland, it looks like a custom TF2 HUD and I say that as someone who uses those myself

Yeah, like I said, I wouldn't count this as finalized just yet. This is just a very rough test to gauge public opinion on the game, and so far, people are highly positive, but there's still a few problems that need addressing (my personal biggest issue is that the voice lines are just too damn frequent and too damn repetitive; I hope we get the quips, pre-race banter, and personalized teasing from TSR again)

For as much as TSR flopped big time, the banter was priceless. Tails telling Shadow "who's your daddy?" will forever live rent-free in my head, as well as Silver's innocent joy at racing and Blaze's nervous queen energy.

I definitely wouldn't say this is very early at all, it's a demo yeah, but this isn't very early, definitely don't expect the finalized game to be looking much different than this, some polished aspects sure, obviously any missing options will be fixed of course, maybe some UI elements will be kind of switched around or changed maybe, and sure things like voice lines too, but I definitely would be expecting the final game to be looking roughly as it looks already, maybe some more polish on the visuals but I already think it looks great as it is animation wise and just graphically
It's not really a super early test build for people to test for bugs and for them to change any game design or what not, it's a network test, pretty standard stuff, most differences between a network test and the final game is missing features and options (like not a full roster or no access to certain modes on the network test build)

I definitely don't expect the game to be looking any different especially if it comes out this year, but luckily I don't think it needs to because I think it looks great already, it's just the music really that's the weakest part

Say what you will about TSR's gameplay, but the soundtrack was, I think, THE best in the entire racing game lineup. Back-to-back bangers, every single damn track.

Imagine Frozen Junkyard's blood-pumping music playing in CrossWorlds with the sheer amount of racing chaos. PRISTINE.

same with the animations, the tricks are fine, I just wish the animations weren't so dumb looking and had more oomph instead of looking like you rotated the entire model, I don't know if they're made that way so that the animations of the tricks can work with all vehicles, I'm sure there's a reason other than just laziness though

the music is also fine, there's no real problem with the music at all, I just don't care for the style of music, hopefully they'll add a jukebox so you can change music back to other Sonic racing games or just other Sonic games in general, that would be a fantastic addition

Pretty much everyone in the game are all shit-talkers, except Cream. Even Big lets off some zingers hidden behind his "simple" speech.

But even Cream has a devious side, bribing Espio to lose the race with a cake baked by her mom, telling Vector that her mother would be extra happy if he let her win (if she's his rival racer) or that she'll put in a good word for him if he buys her ice cream after the race (if he's her rival racer), and even standing up to Eggman, Zavok, and Zazz.

But one of my favorites is Jet asking Silver earnestly if he's become a racing legend that's talked about even 200 years from now, and Silver casually replying with "I've only heard of you today".

O O F. Jet gets roasted and basted and served for dinner in this game.

Because even Jet says that he "should've been first", so the model, voice lines, and visuals declared you second, but the game itself declared you as first, likely due to there being a slight delay in changing your spot from first to second since it happened right at the finish line

In other words...Jet bullshitted his way to victory. :P

Also, regarding the first clip, I kinda wish that Storm had an exclusive voice clip where if he was Hatsune Miku's rival, he would yell "Hatsune Miku?! Is that you? It's been so long!"

and I didn't even play the version of Unleashed people agree being good, I grew up with the PS2/Wii version

the only thing I regret about Unleashed being my introduction to Sonic as a kid is that I didn't get to meet some of the extended cast of characters since that game is pretty isolated to just Sonic really

and I never got good enough at Riders to unlock Shadow and Rouge so I just... didn't even know they existed until way later

which is weird, because Shadow Rouge and Omega are like, the other squad of characters asides from the Sonic team, but to me growing up, the Babylon Rogues were the other squad of characters asides from the Sonic team

It's the other way around for me, I never touched Sonic Gens so I was doing a playthrough of that after 100%ing Shadow Gens but I kinda forgot luckily I still have it installed

I just have to get a new cord for my controller because after playing Shadow Gens entirely on K&M and trying it out on controller only after finishing it I'm not doing that again

Shadow Gens at least has nice K&M button mapping but Sonic Gens absolutely does not and it feels awful to play

What little I played of Sonic Gens was alright, I think I talked about it a bit here too it wasn't terrible

I've been spoiled too much by Shadow Gens gameplay though so it feels like a downgrade for me

Love Sonaze, it's the one ship with Sonic in it that I like (well, and Sonally)

It also makes more sense than Blaze and Silver arbitrarily being paired together, not just romantically but at all as a "team" when they have nothing to do with each other, but I think that's something that's already discussed a lot within the fandom, I'm not really a part of it myself I just enjoy Sonic stuff on my own

I'm also not an expert either, but at least they have a couple games worth of buildup to their dynamic and that Rush ending is pretty good, and I could see some people interpreting it in a romantic light

I'm not really that much into worrying about romance in Sonic though, I do like some ships but it's all fandom stuff to me, the only one I won't ever budge on is Rouge and Knuckles though
