Is it really an EXCLUSIVE that a song meets the requirements for “best song” eligibility?
The requirements are just “it is a song written for and played in the film”
I think you just got sharebaited (is there a word for that?)
clickbaited
well that too

I just prefer my villains to be serious I guess. I guess I'm the only one with this complaint.
I don't play Nintendo games, largely in-part to what I feel is excessive silliness
"sharebaited"?
I just made up a word for getting tricked into sharing content that probably didn't deserve it
oh lol
Eyeroll?
I'm just genuinely not attracted to Nintendo games.
i mean, Mario is mostly silly but games like Zelda or Metroid aren't. they're both fairly serious (Zelda has some silly moments but has some pretty mature themes and stuff)
Zelda is definitely moving towards that demographic afaik
And again, it's also not my only reason.
idk complaining about "excessive silliness" is weird on a MLP server but whatevs
they completely lost my suspension of disbelief when the blue shell exploded
everyone knows canon rainbows are indestructible, that level of OPness was just lazy writing

MLP kept their villains serious
MLP had the right amount of seriousness
Honestly I thought they were going for the blue-shelled guy with the giant machine being the blue-shell equivalent. Did not expect him to go actual blue shell after that.
Even in the first episode, Twilight is absolutely taking everything seriously. She believes there are real stakes for her if she doesn't get ponyville ready in time for the Princess.
I love Twilight
I now have a shirt with Twilight on it so Light Flux and I can be a Twidash ship irl

yes because Chrysalis talking to logs was played completely straight and not silly at all. idk, just going into a Mario movie and then coming out and complaining about how silly the Marioisms were is just weird to me

Fwiw I went as part of a group, I didn't really have an interest in seeing it
But I'm also nitpicking because it had a lot of potential
fair, I do expect this movie to only really land with the target audience of those who played the games
I genuinely wanted it to be a lot better
I basically told my mom that, and that therefore she should see the D&D movie instead
well i thought it was a perfect adaptation of the source material and everything i would want out of a Mario movie. if anything it's better than the 93 movie which is a plus
oh right I keep forgetting to ask: is "Spike" a reference to anything?
yes
Well, "Spike" is an enemy in the games
he was the main antagonist of Wrecking Crew
Foreman Spike, occasionally referred to simply as Spike, is the foreman of the demolition site where Mario and Luigi work in Wrecking Crew. He continuously tries to hinder the brothers' progress. He is usually depicted as a bearded man who wears sunglasses, although in Wrecking Crew '98, he does not have a beard.
Foreman Spike was designed by Hi...
...Huh
Never heard of this guy
I thought Ixrec was referring to these guys: https://mario.fandom.com/wiki/Spike
Spikes are enemies first appearing in Super Mario Bros. 3, they commonly attack by pulling spiked balls out of their mouths and rolling them at Mario or Luigi; . Like Lakitu, they appear to have unlimited amounts of ammo. Also, Spikes' stomachs can be used to store other things as well. Since their debut, Spikes have been recurring enemies in th...
an obscure character who has appeared in 2 or so games
GT have you seen the movie?
I've never heard of this game
remember the guy bullying Luigi at the beginning in the pizzeria? that was Foreman Spike
Not yet, but I don't care about spoilers anyway unless it's something like One Piece, which I want to savor.
oooh
They have a wrecking crew map in Smash
Huh, that explains Spike then
i honestly think i like his Movie design more than his original
I just thought he was some random antagonist
But I do appreciate that it's not random
i think anyone who doesn't obsess over Mario 24/7 did haha
I heard of Spike before, I'm like "I understood that reference"
my fave non Mario reference i think is when Mario was playing Kid Icarus
he had exactly the face you should have when playing Kid Icarus NES
gahhhh
i dont want to wait till May 9th to see it again
May 9th?
I was just happy I got the Odyssey references because I played that for the first time so recently
(probably only the easy ones though)
the theatre is expensive
I love how Pauline was in the movie that made me so happy
Who?
Mayor Pauline
Pauline (originally known as Lady or the Beautiful Girl) is the damsel-in-distress in the arcade game Donkey Kong, the installment that marked her debut in both the Donkey Kong and Mario franchises, along with Mario and her titular kidnapper (confirmed in later games to be a younger Cranky Kong). She was Mario's first love interest.
After a long...
she was the original damsel in distress in Donkey Kong and became the Mayor of New Donk City in Mario Odyssey
I must be having a stroke because I don't remember her
she had a small cameo
only one month between cinema and digital release sounds short
is that normal for kids movies
^ ?
i dont know
I first recognized her name on the news ticker, then later she was on-screen to say they had the flooding under control
Oh was she the news lady?
no, the mayor
she was on the news
yes
Or am I remembering this all wrong?
Ah, I just thought she was a news lady
Must have missed something
I will say
The Super Mario Bros plumbing ad is one of the best ads I've ever seen
Absolutely S tier I loved it
I would call them to fix my pipes
https://www.instagram.com/reel/Cq3VyfAgtFP/ A video (Arab World release date version)
gotta save something for the sequels
i can check the Mario Wiki but i dont think Bowsette has ever been officially acknowledged by Nintendo
yeah
yeah, AFAIK it's technically "just" an internet meme; anyone who played the games but isn't as online as us might not even know about her
Bowsette redirects to the "Mario references on the Internet" page
which is a good read so I'll link it here
https://www.mariowiki.com/List_of_Mario_references_on_the_Internet
The following is a list of Mario-related sightings and references on the Internet. This list does not include fan-made works dedicated to the Mario franchise and its games or content with pornography, sex, or other adult-based content that Nintendo has not acknowledged, nor does it include walkthroughs of Mario games.
a background gag referencing her might've been nice but in the movie they were making, the other stuff they did with Bowser was all a better fit
I said this mostly because this slaps

oh, wow, I completely forgot the original Bowsette lore: https://twitter.com/ayyk92/status/1042465252221181954
yea
come to think of it, technically no one said this but
I appreciate that they made Peach so competent that Bowser literally needs an army around to keep her captured for any length of time
yea
not that pop culture's been lacking in strong female characters lately, but considering how rare that is in the source materal it's still nice
(I'm aware Peach got a game but most of us haven't played it)
she's literally been like this since SMB 2 USA
hopefully a new mainline game gets announced soon
Super Mario Iliad
lol
what do you even do with Mario at this point
I've only played ~4 of the mainline games and I feel pretty saturated on the formula
If I remember, there's only been 4 rpgs where Peach was playable: Super Princess Peach, Super Mario RPG, Super Paper Mario, and 3d World. Having not played 3 of those 4 (I never beat chapter 1 of paper), I'd love a new game where she's playable
3d World is a mainline game not RPG
tbh a big part of the charm of nintendo games is that they don't really stray from their formula
Mario is always going to be a platformer
Oh and that dream one. SMB2
etc
I was trying to say: Non-sports related games...lol
Odyssey was a pretty big departure from the previous 3d Mario game, 3D World
oh lol
I wasn't suggesting it should not be a platformer
but that's a weird thing to bring up since Mario probably has more off-genre spinoffs than any other franchise ever
uh
Mario and the Time Machine intensifies
SM64, I forget how much of Sunshine, Galaxy, Odyssey, PM:TTYD, and some failed attempts at SMW and SMB3?
i see
I bought Odyssey a year ago and have never played it past the tutorial. I could not get a handle on the movement controls. I played a little of SM64 DS, I never beat either Galaxy game but the disks are missing so big sad, and if I ever learn how to use an emulator I'll play TTYD
huh, I thought Odyssey movement was mostly the same as SM64 (until you add the cap moves)
i cant comprehend not getting the controls of Odyssey
tbf it took me forever to figure out how to do a cap dive jump
press y then press right trigger and then b
(yes I only needed it once
)
Mario has had the same framework of controls for a long time, even sometimes retaining moves that aren't necessary for the specific game.
iirc the triple jump is very rarely useful
what? triple jump is the move i use the most
Same with that old Mario 2 move where you hold crouch to jump with height.
I do it all the time for the heck of it, but to actually get onto a high platform, it seems to almost never be the easiest way (and even when it's required it's a real pain to get it to work)
yeah crouch jump is slightly less high but usually faster and far more consistent
ground pound jump and hat bounce are the ones i use the most actually
I don't think I was even aware of the ground pound jump until very late into Odyssey
That's because you are experience what Mario gets about platforming and where others tend to fall flat.
Mario platforms often allow you to use his movement set to skip parts of a level, sometimes to an extreme degree.
Other platformers try to limit this with invisible walls and such and force advancement as the level intended.
idk i just dont think Odyssey would be nearly as fun without all these cool moves
I'm not sure we're disagreeing on that
I thought I was regularly doing several kinds of jumps when I played Odyssey
I never played the original SM64 and I played the tiny amount of the DS version 10+ years ago.
SM64 really suffers from being a first attempt
what are you talking about SM64 is a flawless game
I never played Super Mario Bros Wii but I did complete Wii U, tempted to buy Deluxe, and I never completed New Super Mario Bros. 2, to name a few games. I'm currently trying to complete World Crown in 3d World and have beaten Bowser's Fury twice as well
Surprisingly in the remake for Switch, you don't need every level completed with every character to get there, as I have yet to complete World Mushroom and Flower with all 5
oh you didn't in the WiiU version either
Currently on Luigi's go around
just every stamp, green star, and gold flag
Oh really? I thought that was a requirement? Or is that just for the star on the title select?
completing every level with a certain character gets you their stamp on the stamp page
and i think another star on the profile screen? i cant quite recall

OOO???!!
now featuring origami king combat
i thought Origami King combat was fun just that there wasn't much of a reason to fight enemies because no xp
no its a chore
easily the worst part of that game
someone who hasn't played TTYD wouldn't understand bro sorry..
You're right, I don't understand the hate lol. But as a person who likes Sticker Star almost religiously, I have no room to talk
But I will for sure be playing TTYD if it's ported
Mario really is number one
<picture of mario groundpounding a ? block>
how is this possible they dont even have Medivh
Kamek do the same sound he do in SMW it brings me a big nostalgia.

ye

Critics be sweating nervously right now, lol
critics will prolly say something about audiences are easy to please or something
I hope so, i don't want a challenge when i go to enjoy a movie I'm watching
I finally decided to buy the expansion pass so I'm starting Paper Mario!
epic !
Aren't there action commands in this game? I'm at the Goomba Bros and still can only do 1 damage...
at the end of the prologue
Ohhhh...okay!
@subtle ember Ice Peach was epic
Yeah it was a cool moment
this shoudve been ice peach
wel she had a wedding dress on so it was different than what would have happened if she had her normal one
Yeah the primary color of her dress changing from pink to white is more stark than it changing from white to white
ye
ALSO
wait let me find it it was really cool detail
The best character in the mario movie is this little bob omb who gets really happy when he sees king bob omb
isn't that adorable
king bomb omb from 64
correct
After I've had some time to digest my single viewing, I gotta say I did quite love this movie
so did the N64 Rainbow Road music!!!!!
the movie also had the donkey kong level
yes
The soundtrack alone consisted of more than 120 distinct Mario references.
spike from wrecking crew was there to
Thank you for your keen observations
This was according to the composer, I believe
But yeah, not really worth trying to exhaustively enumerate them all here
The Mario wiki will have a field day with it though
fucking awesome movie
I CANT WAIT FOR THE MOVIE TO COME OUT FOR HOME VIEWING SO I CAN READ THE TRIVIA SECTION ON THE MARIO WIKI ONG

Like "You're right, spirit, I do want to play saxophone now that you mention it."
it's coming to my theatre soon i should go see it again
Thats the name, Luma xd
luma is blue
My local theater is becoming unavailable due to renovations soon
can you tell I've never played a mario game
acchually it's Lumalee
One of those proper terms I don't use because of how obscure they are haha
I couldnt name most of the creatures, Im a bad gamer
Lumalee was the shop Luma that could be found in levels in Super Mario Galaxy
he sells either a life up mushroom or a one up mushroom
(life up is arguably more valuable)
Always the life up because the 1-Ups were a dime a dozen

yes lol
what a glorious trainwreck
and now people are being revisionist and saying it was an incredible critique of capitalism but like
it was regarded as one of the worst movies ever made a mere month ago
We have a better Mario movie now
yes
one that is way more faithful and respectful of the source material
Bob Hoskins didn't even know what a Mario was until after he signed on
I love how the king just calmly and rather gently stops the Koopa from bouncing back and forth against him. Sure, it was for his own benefit, but he didn't even look annoyed, he just stopped the shell safely and then went back to doing his own thing. Surprisingly wholesome.
literally all of the main Mario bad guys have a degree of wholesome
except for most of the rpg villains those suck
Yeah, that gave me a chuckle.
now im remembering some of the dialogue from SM64
like
King Bob Omb straight up breaks the fourth wall half an hour or so into the game lmao

From the trailer I was really expecting more Luigi in the mansion
hope the sequel we get that
but what I truly want is Rosalina
Not enough Luigi in the movie, more Luigi >C<
Gimme Rosalina
also yeees Daisy and Rosalina
My only complaint with a luigi's mansion sequel movie, is King Boo's design. In the games his design is more gloomy and has souless (lol) eyes, but the movie version is the main/party games design: A giant boo with a bejeweled crown, and that's it for his personality...They're 2 different kings entirely personality-wise

$1B here we gooo
Yo the Super Mario Bros. Main Theme is officially being preserved in the Library of Congress!! Lessss aaaa gooooo!!!
ye
Ngl, I'm shocked no other video game song has been preserved
Also, guaranteed, Nintendo planned all of this from the beginning. They release the movie, it makes bank, and then they announce all the accolades and the song preservation on top of it. The song has probably already been preserved for months and they were just waiting for the right moment to announce it.
The Library of Congress has a bunch of video games and recordings of their gameplay, and so has implicitly also stored their soundtracks
Then why did some news sites label it as "the first one ever"?
First one in, specifically, the National Recording Registry
I guess alternatively, first video game soundtrack intentionally added in its own right, rather than as part of a game
Which means Super Mario is sitting next to Shrek.....lol
Yes, well, headlines.
Because it's the soundtrack specifically. Like, a recording of the theme not just the game. i guess?
that too...
here's my favourite @warm vine
skrungly blorbo
bob-lorbo
honestly i completely forgot about chriss pratt like negative twelve seconds in, it just sounded like mario to me
yes good job you're using the lingo properly 🙂
yeah honestly i thought he had a great performance
everyone did tbh
the only voice that was off for me was Cranky but i got used to him
i can already tell there's gonna be a bunch of kids who's internal coming out moment is bowser from this movie
so many people are thirsting over Bowser it's insane
I loved Cranky's voice. Donkey Kong was just...Seth, in a gorilla suit.
But it fit mostly
weirdly enough Seth's voice worked for me
Petition for Keagan and Joy to voice Toad and Peach from now on in anything, games or otherwise lol
Imagine a fully voice acted Mario or Luigi game with Charlie or....I've honestly forgotten Mario's official voice actor other than Pratt....I'm so sorry
Charles Martinet

The Mario movie came out last week, and because I like talking video games, let's review it! Was it any good?
Check out my Social Media pages for updates and other...things!
http://twitter.c...
I'm floored by how fantastic the Mario film is
the only complaint I have is that Cranky wasn't...uh...cranky enough
he sounded way too young
i really liked it
though it was very clearly perfectly and precisely engineered to invoke maximum nostalgia in millenials
i mean i did really like the film so it worked lol
that's because we're killing everything
i wasn't expecting as much 80's music
right?
Not fast enough
yeah no kidding
i followed it up with the owl house finale and now i'm playing hollow knight so i'm getting a firehose of music quality tonight
Big, bold orchestral arrangements of retro themes just...does shit to my brain that nothing else does
oh shit
right, Owl House
have you heard the hollow knight soundtrack?
we need to watch that
Yes we do
I've heard portions, it's fucking gorgeous
it makes me think of your music
like if you wrote something really fucking somber and poingent
I really hope to achieve production quality like the scores featured in all these amazing games and films
Oh I can write somber
it's just not my usual style
but whenever I actually sit and play the piano, most of what I play is somber stuff
I just prefer to make people smile with my music, and I've only really had one opportunity to write something somber, and it wasn't exactly the most pleasant of circumstances
Peach was the best part of the film
PEACHES PEACHES PEACHES PEACHES PEACHES

blue dress peach made me feel things
Same rom
she's a better Elsa
Very same
also FIRE FLOWER DK
the branding on Bowser's piano made me smile
there is so much to gush about
I can't wait to have the film at home so we can get high out of our minds and rewatch it, turning it into a 5-hour ordeal while we pause every 20 seconds to just gush about all the little references and shit
the part where luma(?) was like "the only hope is the sweet release of DEATH" i was like wow they are NOT fucking around are they
Embrace the void
oh my god the Luma added so much depth to those scenes
Also the Luma was totally able to leave anytime
he was just really happy to be there
He literally slips outside his cage for one shot
all the other prisoners were like jesus christ, loosen up will ya?
Narrator: "But little did they know that the little Luma was the loosest of them all."
I can't believe they killed King Bob-omb
I can't believe we basically had the intro to Luigi's Mansion but no actual mansion
hell, King Boo was there
I'd give anything for an animated film adaptation of Luigi's Mansion
that would be fucking incredible
The night. Calm. Quiet. An endless void expanse, a chorus of silent tranquility. It was hers, a blank canvas upon which she wrote the stars. With a flourish of her aetherial mane, guided by the moon’s light, she painted the heavens each and every night. And thus, was each night reborn, new and unique, wrought by the dreamwalker’s visions. ...
(I often had this on repeat when I was reading Background Pony)
I appreciate the shout out with this song, and I do love out it turned out. But I can't take credit for it being completely my work because it's comprised of 2 melodies of existing songs
true
What the hell was that thing?!?!?
I'm Gen X, I'm too uncool to get the reference, but it was fucking hilarious.
it was a Lumalee who was a shop Luma in Super Mario Galaxy
the death talk is invented for the movie though lol
Okay, yeah, I never played the more modern games, so that just hit me out of left field.
Ngl, it was probably one of the very few times that death was mentioned in a piece of Mario media.
Usually they use euphemisms
I mean, the whole movie reminded me of 80s films where you could talk about killing characters. Bowser even got to say he was going to kill Luigi in front of Mario, I was impressed.
Damn

damn
I've seen Lumas in SMGalaxy, but none of them talked like that; you weren't missing any deep lore cuts there, the humor was all in how out of place the lines were
Okay, good. I just had no idea what it even was.
I did love a lot of the little nods to how silly some of the game conventions are, like the floating platforms and how the pipes may take you somewhere you didn't expect.
Plus the musical cues were fantastically subtle.
if I had to guess why they picked a luma for that role, I'd say because lumas aren't from any of the environments they visited or even mentioned in the movie (they literally live in outer space with Rosalina), so the critter felt as out of place as its dialogue did
Makes sense. It was hilarious, and I loved all the prisoner's reactions.
Peach was an absolute badass, and I love they made her floating power part of her fighting style.
The MarioKart bit felt a little forced, but was still fun. I was not expecting the suicide blue shell koopa.
Also, Jack Black was perfect as Bowser.
Jack Black was phenomenal. Properly menacing when he needed to be scary, but also a total goof for all the goofy bits
Omg 😳

‘THE SUPER MARIO BROS MOVIE’ has passed $700M worldwide.
Read our review: https://t.co/4Bxh7jIQLd
Note that this film has been still less than 2 weeks since it got released and some region got it even later than that, including some region where it hasn't even released yet
This is fast
To compare with, Avatar 2 hit 1bil at this point (Dec 28, 12 days after release), but it also had Christmas holiday.
I’m genuinely surprised that this is as successful as it is, but given the global recognition of the Mario brand that should be reasonably predictable in hindsight.
But it still feels weird how successful this is.
It’s super Mario successful
This will certainly encourage further exploration into other Nintendo based movies, but given that Nintendo aggressively hates money… I wonder if they would bother.
And their other brands may not be as recognizable
Zelda might pull it off
But the rest probably couldn’t
I'm not surprised. I knew the moment they announced that it was gonna be an animated Mario movie that it was gonna make BUNDLES of cash.
I think the only other IPs that Nintendo can put to screen and make money off of are Zelda and Metroid.
Maaaaaybe Star Fox, but I doubt it.
Personally I doubt they could realistically do a Metroid movie and have it financially make sense. Much to my sadness.
Sure, but I suspect that the brand recognition would be important for its success and Metroid doesn’t exactly sell well.
(Dread did, though)
Just a guess anyway
Metroid has much potential for a movie or series of movies, absolutely. Just a question of whether Nintendo would care.
I think there might just be enough financial gain in Metroid for at least a mini-series, or a full-blown show. Perhaps not a big blockbuster movie though, you're right.
Sorta like the Mandalorian S1 style, with Samus going to various planets early in her bounty-hunting career and catching criminals, and while she's doing that it starts to build up to the events of the first Metroid game and the Metroid experiments.
I do not think they could pull off the level of general interest required for a show
I think they absolutely could, but not just yet. If they want to do that, they gotta first release a Zelda movie to build up hype for more Nintendo IPs making it to the big screen (it's got a lot of brand recognition and worldwide fans to make a killing, if not as big as Mario), and then release Metroid Prime 4, and then follow that up with a Metroid show.
A show would be more investment than a movie, really
If they did a Zelda film they might have to consider actually having a story
With Zelda it's a lot easier to have a more compelling and deep story.
“String of video games references” works for Mario and approximately nothing else
Heh. Well BotW/TotK seem to be going for a more solid storyline
Certainly easier than Mario, at least.
I could buy that Nintendo wants to make Zelda more coherent
Zelda and Metroid have much more coherent worlds in which a story could be written, but... yeah I really don't know how much potential there is here
It honestly would not surprise me if Nintendo already has plans for a Zelda movie or show, they just wanted to make sure that the Mario movie was gonna make bank first, since it's a much safer IP to lead with.
They tried to delve more into the Metroid universe in a way that was almost movie like with Other M
The storytelling needed help.
But the presentation was definitely intending to be viewed that way
Now that it has and is still going very strong (strong enough to potentially make it beyond 1 billion), I think Nintendo has more than enough reason to greenlight their third-biggest franchise for a movie (second being Pokemon, but that already has several movies and a show).
“Several” feels like an understatement
Pokémon has like 17 movies, if not more
Lol
I lost count at around the 14th
(It’s also not really a Nintendo property anyway)
Tbf, a lot of those are anime films, so they might not count as "movies" to general audiences, even though they are.
23 animated and one live action, apparently
Though the 22nd was a remake of the first
By technicality, yes. But Nintendo still owns the IP for the most part, sharing it with Game Freak and Creatures.
I think it’s split 1/3 between the three?
But yeah it would have to be The Pokémon Company who does it
Nintendo, against expectation, actually has a bunch of media stuff based on their games, it's just that they really stopped doing it at certain point
Like if you think about it, Mario had a TV show and 2 movies at this point
Zelda had an animated show
Kirby has an anime, F-Zero has an anime, AC has an animated movie and bunch of mangas
any of them good?
I think Kirby was pretty decent, fans like it and they recently released BD of it
F-Zero was pretty good
AC I heard it was pretty good but it is extremely obscure as it only released in Japan
Mario and Zelda, I think western fans will know better than me
We don't talk about the Zelda show
Excuuuse me, princess
Apparently Mario also had a 60min animated movie long ago
Donkey Kong had 40 episodes long animated show
FE and Star Fox had short animations
i dont want a big interconnected Nintendo universe
a Mario movie universe would be cool though :3
Stillll holding out for a Kirby movie. Fully voiced with Hispanic Meta Knight and British DeDeDe to boot
Oh at least 40 last I checked...Not including Detective Pikachu tho lol
23 animated, 1 live action.
Huh...could have sworn there were more..but maybe I'm just misremembering special episodes or somethin
Anyways still hoping for a Kirby adaptation. Movie/show continuation of Right Back At Ya
Heeeeey, Hispanic Meta Knight. I understood that reference.
jajajaja
do you think the japanese mint will put out a solid gold coin in the shape of a mario coin?
(Does japan even have a mint?)
of course lol
What, do you think they mine their coins from a mountain
yes

or gather them from long grass with a sword
Those aren't coins, those are gems
they're money
If you try to argue that you get money from grass, go India because they use Rupee
Of course they do
well their english website wasn't very helpful then
1000yen is roughly 10 bucks, yes
😎
They usually don't have such expensive coins
these all seem serious, rather than fun
Nintendo Concerned That Mario Movie Sequel Will Be Too Challenging for Western Audiences

What will they do, bring a different movie and reskin it to Super Mario Bros the Movie 2 exclusive in USA?
Nintendo loves to muzzle anyone and anything that touches to something Nintendo
Probably their fault the movie's story was so basic
The whole thing is a joke about how Nintendo decided to not release the original Super Mario Bros 2 to western audiences because "it is too challenging"
They were right to do so
‘Peaches’ from ‘THE SUPER MARIO BROS MOVIE’ has been added to the Billboard Hot 100.

omg,???
Jack Black rocks once again
Okay I'm real annoyed now. I just beat Paper Mario on the Switch, but the game is supposed to give me the option to save after the fireworks scene to continue after the final battle, but it's been going on for 5 minutes with zero button commands doing anything! WTH Nintendo??
This is the channel for the movie lol
no theres no saving after that.
but yes movie channel
Literally 2 weeks ago everyone was talking about Star Fox games and Paper mario. Whatever
Nintendo decided to change the JP name of Spike to Spike
It was Blacky/Blakky before.
This is to follow his name in the movie.
Super Mario Bros Movie will release in my country at 8 pm (I was just looking at VOX cinemas website), if I'm going to watch the film in the premiere day or lately on Saturday? I think I will watch the film later I guess.

Here is the iconic scene of Bowser's love song, "Peaches", performed by Jack Black, remade and converted into N64 graphics!
Lol, my military coworkers were just talking about the movie and most of them were saying that they thought it was trash and that their kids "weren't entertained at all".

Sometimes I wonder if they're being deliberately obtuse and/or contrary just because they can.
Probably, because they don't want to be seen as enjoyjng children's fare
"Oh no, our children are having GASP funn! UNACCEPTABLE!" -them right now
Nah, according to them, their children didn't like the movie at all and thought it was an unfunny, lazy snooze-fest.
I'm going to call them liars.

“Highest grossing Illumination film as measured by US ticket sales” feels like a particularly uninteresting one of these tweets.
Miyamoto said that they will make more movies, and not only Mario movies
there's going to be a Pikmin movie
Switch sales is obviously dropping, nothing too bad there, and their IP sales is not very large yet, but apparently their stock price rose by 4% or smth after Mario movie's hit
The gaming giant is finally awake, they are trying to move to becoming the media giant. Will they succeed? We shall see...
If the Mario movie is any indication, they will absolutely succeed.
Also, this this confirmed? Because if so, that is soooooo not what I expected.
no
it's just a guess
but Miyamoto loves Pikmin and there have been shorts made around them

lol it passed 850 million a few hours ago
The long tail on this movie might push it past the billion mark in a few weeks.
it hasn't even released in Japan yet

‘THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE’ is expected to reach $1B at the worldwide box office by next weekend.
That would make this the first animated movie to reach that mark since 2019 with ‘FROZEN 2’.

Just watched the movie
i'm frustrated by the movie

these look absolutely BEAUTIFUL, shame we couldn’t get any of these scenes in the movie
then again they do have part of the Captain toad theme in the credits so it’s better than nothing
For me, I feel this is my favourite illumination movie. I still have to watch it a few more times to see if I will like it more

Anyone else heard cranky say sh!t instead of ship?
no it's proof that people like mario
Mario is the cinematic experience
people say "I want cinematic battles in star trek" and directors think "they want high production values!" but in reality we just want to see Mario stomping klingon BopS
Yeah, until the Mario movie I wasn't too sold on this whole "movie" fad
They're trying to push the idea that everyone wants to go to movie theaters, rather than watching at home.
And they're wrong, I'd have much rather seen this movie at home.
I liked seeing it in the theater, but i wish it didn't cost so much
This is why I almost exclusively go to movies on Tuesdays at AMC. With the Stubs membership ($15/yr) you get discounted tickets on Tuesdays and if it's a daytime showing a ticket ends up being like $7
I almost never see films in theaters anyway
I do maybe 5-10 times a year, mostly for theater exclusives that I'm going to forget exist if I wait months for a proper digital release
The last film I saw before this was One Piece Red
Prior to that was Star Wars IX

We went to a local tiny theater with like two screens. It's dirt cheap, even if it's not a matinee showing. But they don't have the big THX sound or anything, so they're not where you go for big spectacle films. Was perfectly fine for SMB tho.
I literally haven't been to a theater since 2020. SMB was the first movie I saw in theaters since.
I like seeing movies in theaters with the boys, but if I'm by myself or with just one other friend I'd rather watch at home where I can actually afford the popcorn and beer
Horror movies in particular are good in the theater
i hope of the mario movie would release on netflix
It'll become digital in time
scratch that :(
https://twitter.com/dfffaz/status/1651763836511490049?s=46
must be to draw the box office sales out more or something
That is definitely cashing in

this is making my head spin ngl
more than double than the 2nd place
Ngl, despite the quality of the Sonic films, this is making me wish yet again that they were animated films instead. Imagine the BUNDLES of money they would make, just like Mario is now.
TIL there is an Uncharted film
Yes it stars Spiderman
Spoodler Guy
There is an Uncharted film, and it sucked major ass.
Absolute garbage casting.
And then there was an Uncharted fan film that was a million times better, and made by people who actually cared about the games and understood them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5CZQpqF_74
Nathan Fillion is Nathan Drake in this live action Uncharted short film by Director Allan Ungar.
Based on the video game series by Naughty Dog.
CAST
Nathan Fillion as Drake
Stephen Lang as Sully
Geno Segers as Diego
Mircea Monroe as Elena
Ernie Reyes Jr as El Tigre
Director: Allan Ungar
Writers: Allan Ungar & Jesse Wheeler
Producers: Nathan ...
(Oh yeah, starring Nathan Fillion, a muuuuch better Nathan Drake and a great guy in general.)
when i first saw the casting, i legit thought that tom holland was the side kick instead of Nathan
with the amount of money they making on theaters
they will not release digitally any time soon
It was inevitable
Honestly, it’s actually probably surprising to everyone involved
Maybe Nintendo will look into exploring movies for other IPs
But I guess this guarantees a sequel at the very least
Imagine if he turns into ice mario in the sequel
I liked it, some of the craziest action scenes ive ever seen in a movie
but I havent played the game so didnt really bother me that tom didnt look like nathan drake
honestly, I'd like to see more one time use powerups, like frog mario
Penguin Mario mayhaps; have best of both worlds
propeller Mario when

Not being a person of culture or whatever you call it, I didn't really mind the licensed songs. I just saw it as is, a movie made for Mario fans, and that was good enough for me.

Once it passes Frozen 2 it's the highest-grossing animated film.
NO, The Lion King remake does NOT count. Disney themselves say it's not an animated film and shouldn't be in this category. It's the media that spun it that way. It's NOT an animated film, by thunder!
I'm sure it'll surpass it anyways regardless
It’s possible to edit Wikipedia
And face the thousands of counter-edits? No sir.
Wikipedia is like r/place but for "information"
Anyways, going to see this again next week with friends!
...wait, why doesn't The Lion King remake count as "animated"?
afaik CGI animation has been a type of "animated" for as long as we've had CGI movies
a bunch of other stuff on that list is CGI, including Frozen and Mario
Well Frozen is an animated film, and the original Mario is live action with cgi. Have you seen the lion king remake's models? They are not animated "naturally"
...Mario is live action?
Hold up I thought the lion king remake backfired
like, when
The old old one
How did it make so much money
oh
I'm talking about the one that was on the list screenshotted above, i.e. this year's
Yeah the new one is animation
I don't think there was cgi in that one?
Okay I'm clearly lost on something...I thought cgi and computer animated were different things.
CGI literally stands for "computer generated image(ry)"
Well I didn't know that okay?
so "computer animated" is borderline synonymous with CGI, other than saying the images it generates are being used for animation rather than, well, anything else you might do with an image
^^^^^^^^^^^
so... I get that there was a bit of confusion over which Mario movie was referenced, but you were making assertions about what is or isn't CGI; that kind of implies you know what the word means
anyway, I'm still confused by the claim that the Lion King remake is not animated, and the claim that Disney themselves claimed this
what google's telling me is that it was 100% CGI lions, not even motion capture of real lions
I was under the impression that they used mocap and/or a mix of real lions as well as CG
I thought cgi was used in the old mario movie and the lion king remake, because I was thinking there's no way those were costumes/motion tracking animation. I thought cgi was all the stuff that was neither practical effects or straight up animation.
But I've never seen it
yeah, "cgi" broadly is that, since "computer generated", "a-guy-drew-it-by-hand generated" and "old-school camera generated" are pretty much your three options for creating images
fundamentally, "animation" means taking things which don't move and making them appear to move; there's always going to be some vagueness in the terminology here, but it's usually interpreted to include most of the ways computers generate video files, as opposed to recording video of real-world stuff that's moving around by default
ok I think I found some of the quotes GT was referring to
So this all comes full circle. On that definition, Is the Lion King Remake an animated movie or not?
it seems like what the director meant is that the techniques they're using are different enough from merely recording real-life actors and from traditional animation (including traditional motion capture) that he's not sure either term properly applies
which is fair enough, we should just avoid reducing that to "it's not animated"; the lions are definitely still being rendered by computers so for taxonomic purposes like that wiki list, animated is the category that makes more sense
Okay, glad we cleared that up. I've been in enough debates this morning alone lol
the article I found used a term "virtual production" which seems reasonable enough to me
On that note, it looks like Apple showed off a background from the live-action Moana film as part of their presentation about their more powerful computers today.
huh
i was looking around the Super Mario Bros Movie's IMDB page and Alex Hirsch (creator of Gravity Falls and voice of Hooty on TOH) is listed in the special thanks
Alex Hirsch also voiced King in TOH
yes but Hooty is more important
Says you
He had a guest bit on The Simpsons too
that's awesome
Cap if I wrote a fan fiction about Bill Cipher, The Core, and Emperor Belos teaming up to get revenge on their respective protagonists would you read it
listen i just wanted to make sure because Ford is my favourite character
Wait what!?
Make the "Eda is Stan's ex wife" theory canon in it!
I love that the backstory behind this is he was doing readings for Dana, just to help her get a feel for the dialogue, and he decided to just do Hooty as a completely demented Mickey Mouse voice to make her laugh. But it worked, so they kept doing it.
