#The Super Mario Bros. Movie
1 messages · Page 2 of 1

Oh shit hasbro's gunna sue
I guess we know what happened to Equestria
I mean...................
...

Yoshis with the colors of the 4 super mario world yoshis appeared in the trailer...
And a pink one probably to be the females :V
And the trailer answered the biggest question about super mario world...
h i s a r r i v a l i s i m m i n e n t
One of the biggest questions in super mario world was if the flying yoshi was BLUE or PURPLE.
It's blue...
I was always right.
That was a debate? The flying blue one?
Yep
At the time the game was released, there were people who seriously debated whether the flying yoshi was blue or purple.
And I always defended that it was blue
The whole screen, there only 5 colors of yoshis here, Blue, Yellow, Green, Red, And pink.
I don't know where that pink yoshi came from.
If this scene was supposed to be a reference to super mario world, there is no pink yoshi i this game...
It's almost like there's been multiple Yoshi games
Yoshi's Story being the best one
if the movie have yoshi... There is totaka... If there is totaka...
Totaka Song hiding in the movie...

Looks like a fun movie.
Totaka's song has to be hidden somewhere in the movie...
Cause it's a yoshi games easter egg.
And, tecnically... Mario easter egg.
I'm going to watch this movie with my ears open.
I'm ready for the Action Princess game.
Technically we got that already...
Super Princess Peach
This is suposed to be all the islands?
I think it's suposed to be Yoshi island but...
This don't look like yoshi island...
This don't remember me of the yoshi island from SMW
Yoshi's Island
Ehhhhh...I can see it. Slightly redesigned, but I see it.
Yk yoshi Island has a lot of places in only one game...
Vanilla dome
Ilusion forest
Donut place
And for some reason a lot of places in yoshi country has food names.
Actually, that cluster of islands is called Dinosaur Land. One of the islands is named Yoshi's Island
Vanilla dome, Soda Lake, Donut Place, Chocolate Plateu...
What do you mean
i think the bowser ship was moving in that map
Really cool
AKIRA BIKE SLIDE
Ooh that is cool
I just thought the art was neat c:
YK what make me angry?
Luigi is in the movie.
But AGAIN only Mario has his name in the title...
Every game who has Luigi and Mario.
We don't have both names in the game :V
It's never "Super Mario and Luigi game"
It's ever or Mario, or Luigi, never both 😔
Oh I didn't remember that.
you made me very happy now thankyou.
COPPA Moment...
The Luigi movie is when he becomes a ghostbuster to save Mario from a haunted mansion. That's when Luigi will meet Daisy.
Omg
Apparently the land Bowser rules over is called the Dark Lands instead of Koopa Kingdom, which is what it was called in Super Mario Bros 3
ok theory time
so now that we know bowser’s domain is called “the dark lands” and NOT the koopa kingdom, i actually think that at one point it WAS a koopa kingdom and bowser’s ancestors were its rulers. https://twitter.com/i/web/status/1598734081491177485

Oh no I rewatched the Mario movie trailer and the hype levels awre off the charts
I loved the remake of the song they did in the trailer
I wish that the movie have unless 1 reference to super mario world.
This was the 1° mario game i played in my life...
I'm very happy that they're including music from the games in the new movie

Also the ATMs being coin blocks is hilarious lmao
I'm so excited
It looks like a real fun movie to watch.
If the Toad has to withdraw 99 coins they will have to groundpound the block instead of jumping 99 times
It really does I'm so excited I can't even explain
The last time I was this excited for a movie was The Batman
I don't remember going to see Avatar but apparently I was there

Why is everyone confused
Are you saying that you would go to a theater with a movie ticket just to watch Mario trailer and leave?
...Why would I
I remember people doing that for star wars and avengers
in principle I understand the concept of being so singularly interested in a franchise that its trailiers would be worth that much hassle to see
but these days most trailers are publicly available on the internet anyway
oh right, that "theater experience" stuff I'm incapable of perceiving
okay, guess that works
I love going to the theatre
This is a thing that people do.
One of my favourite things
I don't get why
But it's a thing people do, for Star Wars, Marvel, the Avatar trailer....
Who cares about avatar when Mario
I mean I go to the theater for actual movies
but even then only the theater exclusives
in b4 the Mario film turns out to be actually Avatar 3
Ftr I have never done this, but I get why people do
if I can watch it at home that has far more advantages (pause, rewind, volume control, subtitles, full food/drink control, can do chat and googling on the side, etc, etc)
And lord knows if I had enough money I would totally be doing this
Anyways I just thought this was a funny thing no need to read into it too much
Perhaps I like the theatre because I know getting on my phone would be rude and therefore am more under control of my ADHD
Mad lad, lol
Drive-in theaters. The freedom to be a goober about the movie where no one else is affected
Do you guys think Mr. L will be in this movie
whoa!
normal mario, I sleep
cat mario, real shit.
hehe
the cliche floating heads poster design works a lot better when everyone is bright and cartoony
😂👉 No shot my guy blue paratroopa 🐢💸 with spiked helmet 🪖 actually made it into the poster
He's the source of the blue shell in MK
everyone forgetting about the blue paratroopa gang in Bowser's Inside Story smh
They also have rainbow road in the poster

ooooooooh
cool poster
mario’s design for the movie is really cute i really like it
His face is delightfully round

oooooh
Luigi really looks sharp so far
Looks pretty round to me
It is too bad we'll have to wait for a sequel for Rosalina.
Rosalina can get her own whole plot for a sequel
I hope she also appears in odyssey 2
also this posters look good as fuck

Very hype for this movie
me toooooooo
i love how they incorporated the waterfall from the SM64 castle grounds

just think, if this is successful, we might get a zelda film
Oh man, I'd KILL for a Zelda film. A really good one too.
But guaranteed, this movie will be successful. Not sure about critically, but the movie will absolutely soar at the box office. This is Nintendo's biggest and best financial move in a long while.
if they do a Zelda movie too I really hope there’s not an interconnected “Smash Bros” universe
I’m really sick of cinematic universes
A Smash Bros movie would be badass, but yeah, make it it's own separate thing.
imagine the licensing nightmare
smash bros would be dumb anyways
now, a Mario Kart Cinematic universe
that has legs
Just make the Fast & Furious movies but starring Mario and his allies and friends trying to stop Bowser using their karts.
Just pure profit, right there.
Epona will, of course, be voiced by eddy murphy
they’re already kind of doing Mario Kart in the Mario movie tho
Ever heard of the term "stealth pilot"?
i think i'd actually like a metroid movie before a zelda movie
smash bros is the sort of thing that makes sense as a video game but would be a terrible idea for anything story-driven like a movie
I could see Metroid or Zelda being good movie material, as long as they really commit to telling an original story instead of remaking a specific game; all of the games are sparse on main story even when the main story is actually good

ok
ive been rewatching the plumbing commercial and i am so in love
also
apparently
allegedly, the lady in the commercial is voiced by Jeannie Elias, who if you don’t know voiced Princess Peach in Super Mario Bros Super Show
im sooooo excited

ngl me too
I think I've watched it like 9 times now
no they were shown at the end of Yoshi’s Island
Marketing is cool and all, but I just hope the movie itself isn't super "Illumination-ified" so to speak.
...For some reason those pants he's wearing are making me uncomfortable.
at least they don't look like a diaper/underwear. They look like something a genie would wear.
Yeah, but like...
TOAD
what pants? that's skin!
If your skin grows a drawstring speak to a doctor
That marketing team is doing a lot of work.
I wonder how much of this is our social circles reposting ALL the marketing, how much is the creators being genuinely super hyped about this, and how much is the high marketing budget
Well they have to make money to pay Chris
I imagine if it goes well for the studio they might be able to secure more Nintendo movies.
“But we need to make Smash movie, right?”
When they do the Mario Kart movie, Link will be the surprise twist midway through the movie.
Fun fact : Kirby, Smash Bros, and Pokemon are technically not Nintendo First Party franchises
it’s true, Kirby and Smash are HAL games and Pokémon are Game Freak games
Nintendo just publishes them
Meanwhile Xenoblade counts as First party
i so desperately don’t want a shared universe
Fire Emblem = not first party
it's actually kind of interesting where mario goes from here though
Because, if the film works, you'd expect a sequel but...
it's true. They're technically the rare second-party franchises.
Astral Chain = First party
Mario has more enemies.
true!
Time for Wart.
they've got enough characters, and they basically have to make up a story almost from scratch no matter who they pick, so why not
OMG if a sequel is what brings Wart back that would be amazing
I want a postcredits scene where Bowser and Mario talk as friends as if the whole movie was just a theatric acting
what is a cookie
autocorrect hiccup?
oh
No it is a term specifically used only in Korea
Nobody really knows where it came from
Has the same meaning with postcredits
he's already back mario https://mario.wiki.gallery/images/2/2b/TLOZ_LA_remake_Mamu.jpg
i know
but I want him in Mario games again…
also
who tf keeps hookshot on y
you keep Roc’s Feather on y at all times
🐢 : Yo Mario my man peak acting, but your jump was a bit too much I think
: What jump?
🐢 : The one you did after you ate the mushroom
: Uh...I don't remember what happened
🐢 : STAFF!! WHO BROUGHT THOSE SHROOMS
Ha! That'd be hilarious
Got this in my Nintendo newsletter email; mark your calendars
this is it this is going to be the Goomba focused trailer
yea that shot was attached to the email, but I didn't add it to the screenshot for some reason
That blue spiked paratrooper is gonna be a really cool antagonist if he's the blue shell during the race/movie. Imagine, he acts like a compass, that points Bowser to Mario at all times. Like how the shell knows where and who's 1st place lol
Life comes at you Mario
at this rate it'll be an april fool's release
Imagine the movies not real and was just an expensive elaborate prank "oh, we made you seriously believe Chris Pratt is voicing Mario?"
godammit
i already made plans with mom to see it on Friday
I'll have to dodge spoilers
Spoiler : Mario jumps in the movie

I wish hollywood would deage jack black so I'd stop feeling so fucking old
Nintendo is really going hard in this film
I hope it does well, or it might end up destroying nintendo
I don't have a good sense for how much they're marketing this since I know we're seeing a lot more reposts of the marketing than we would for nearly any other film
im sorry im excited
i mean, even if it doesn't do well critically (which i highly doubt) it's gonna do amazingly commercially i feel
I fully expect it to be "not bad" as a movie and then make a ton of money on sheer name recognition of the character
how much of a ton relative to the marketing budget is what's less clear
That's because it is more than just the Mario movie.
Nintendo wants to move their IPs beyond gaming, Illumination wants dibs on future movies.
Illumination can't just cash grab Mario, they need to do a great job to get more IPs.
Zelda movie? 👀
Metroid movie
Aw yeah, all the movies
WarioWare movie
I can't tell if I'd be hyped for or dreadful (heh) of a Metroid movie
but I suppose actually seeing the Mario movie will affect that
It depends on how far Nintendo would let them take Metrod.
It's a good horror setting.
With the key difference Samus is seeking out the horror.
:pippwiggle:
would be 300 M with king Goomba
sounds like he had to take a solid second to think of a mario character
tbf Mario's not that big on "characters"
omg i love how 3D World brought back the wifebeater koopas
er
wifebeater in the context of the white tank top

that's what they're called!
Lol
I think they're sold as A-shirts
oh that's a way better name
A is usually jump in mario so I say that the Koopas are wearing JUMP shirts
Nah. We need a Kirby movie that is a direct sequel to Kirby: Right Back at Ya!
No bones about it, Luigi is in trouble.

smash bros cinematic universe
in b4 Zelda steps out of the shadows to recruit Mario and then they drop the bombshell that Zelda will return in The Legend of Zelda film
Sarasaland set-up?
omg that would be cool
we literally haven't seen Sarasaland since Super Mario Land
Was it mario land or mario land 2 that introduced Wario?
It's been a bit since Wario was the definitive antagonist of something
Super Mario Land 2 was where he was introduced
Tatanga was the antagonist of the first Mario Land

Gotcha
I'm just trying to think: who else are definite antagonists in mario?
Fawful would be fucking awesome
Fawful would be rad
omg
they could do Wart for a sequel
he literally hasn't been in a mainline game since Super Mario Bros 2 i think
Wario, Wart, Tatanga, DK (
), King Boo, something something paper mario antagonist, Koopalings, Bowser Jr. (Which would make sense)
Ooh, something something super mario rpg characters would be crazy
But honestly, best chances of characters to get a spotlight would be Fawful, Wario, or Bowser Jr. (in my personal opinion)
Lmao, Forman Spike taking over would be fucking hilarious, but would make no God damn sense
Or maybe...
just maybe...
he was the main antagonist of Wrecking Crew
Dry bowser?
Well I mean, Kamek already forks for Bowser, so... there's nothing stopping them from doing that
especially if the final battle in the movie goes down like it does in SMB 1 with the bridge and axe
yeah
But in all honesty
We gotta think grander
Cus I mean
You remember how many different dimensions there were when mario and luigi were transported?
As far as we know, there are dimension leading to other Nintendo properties
that could be cool but idk, im a little tired of cinematic crossovers
Mario Movie X Detective Pikachu?
It'd be novel
Oh, what if k. rool shows up from DKC?
That's be jarring
That's a crossover I can get behind
Cus I mean, DK already exists in the mario movie
Something like "it follows up right after the dk crew leaves to deal with bowser, and when they get back, K. Rool already set up shop on dk Island (or dimension in this case
)"
Nice and simple, makes sense, nothing else really needed
we do have the whole DK crew from 64 so that would be epic
& more
anyway about Foreman Spike
im guessing that the Mario Bros will be working for him towards the beginning as an homage to Wrecking Crew but he's mean and treats them poorly so they quit and start up Super Mario Bros Plumbing
A secondary antagonist
yea!
But like, if they mentioned him as a prominent character, is he gonna follow the brothers into the mushroom kingdom?
maybe?
what if he gets kidnapped by bowser too?
Tries bargaining for their old jobs back with luigi or something when mario shows up to rescue his bro., but they ultimately reject his offer and send him back home?
lol
maybe
idk we'll just have to see
im so excited
apparently Bowser is going to have a musical number about how much he loves Peach
which sounds funny
but like Bowser
Luigi is right there cmon
Luigi hasn't even seen what peach looks like yet
Unless bowser shows him or something
It will be so god damn dumb if they make a new antagonist just for the sequel
Or maybe...
Wait
What if when they make the sequel...
A new mario game drops simultaneously?
Fuckinnn... SpongeBob: the movie: the game style
oh im suggesting that Bowser and Luigi should get together lol
I see
haha, classic training montage.
A teaser for the live action Christopher Nolan Metroid movie, obviously.
I want the Subspace Emissary from Brawl as a movie. Like fully storyboarded with a similar ending to the game. But half those characters aren't even owned by Nintendo so I don't think it's possible lol

!!!!
it really seems like the cast genuinely loves Mario which makes me happy
Well tbh if this movie is successful it's a huge potential future income for those actors, there's no way they would not love it anyway
i guess if you want to be cynical about it
what do you mean
the whole "actor shows interest in doing film/television/etc" thing
Of course they do, they like to get paid
Well I mean, excluding that specific part, if they genuinely enjoy (say in this case) playing a certain character, why reject their enthusiasm? (what I said may not make any sense, but idk how to reword it to say what I really mean
)
no i agree
Some actors really do want roles or cameos in some IPs because they really enjoy them, see Star Wars/Star Trek.
I'm not sure DK would apply here.
But if Robin Williams was still around he'd be super into a cameo or role in a Zelda film.
I mean, I'm not saying it's never the case
I just think a lot of the time it's very 'duh' for very cynical reasons
so uh
it seems Seth has confirmed that the DK Rap is in the movie
https://vxtwitter.com/supermariomovie/status/1641485445816102920?s=46
DK Rap is straight-up 🍌🍌🍌
#SuperMarioMovie
Probably should've put that behind a spoiler tag
tbf, this is a spoilers channel
I’m kinda unclear on that, though. Like, the thing isn’t out yet and all discussion is quarantined to this thread, but it’s also an open spoilers thread?
Is there actually anywhere we can have lengthy spoiler free discussion of not video game content in this server? I’ve been rather confused by that.
We do the games threads and spoilers are enforced, but television and film threads, spoilers aren’t?
that's fair; I'm not one to enforce things here, but I'll try my best when I send things here
tbf, I don't really know half the time either. It's hard to know what to spoil and what to talk about openly. On paper, the whole channel is spoilers, obviously, but compartmentalizing them into forum threads kind of concentrates the discussion for the topic, which is good, but it also means there's nowhere for someone to talk about, for example, last week's mando episode without being spoiled by this week's
Exactly
Or just be somewhere to nerd out about hype for a future thing while also making it clear that spoilers for said future thing shouldn’t be casually tossed out
Like what generally happens in the gaming channels such as Zelda
yeah...
I'm not sure if there is a "solution" to this
in practice, every thread gets its own informal spoiler policy because that show/game/franchise is in a different situation and it's usually "obvious" that many people in the thread won't want to see X yet
and if the situation is "everyone but you has seen it already"... I'm not sure it's possible to do much better
the exceptions that prove the rule are the game threads where someone new plays it for the first time and all the existing fans of the game use spoiler tags for stuff that one person hasn't gotten to yet; I've been in more than one of those, but then, half the reason that works is because no one was actively discussing it before that new player
being one episode behind on a still-ongoing TV show is a very different situation for which there might just be no audience
not pictured is the Bowser spikes on Jack Black's jacket
But look at his shoes
I feel Seth Rogan could have worn a DK tie at least
yea
Like, come on it would have been in character, & classy
or at least like a brown suit
Anya Taylor Joy and Jack Black def look the best imo
please say he showed up looking like a wizard
He's looking at the photographer like "the fuck you want?"
lol
Waitwaitwaitwaitwaitwait
Is that an actual plumber van in the back behind miyamoto?
oh yeah they made the Mario Bros plumbing van irl

it's pretty sweet
I wonder who is payed to drive it around
someone very lucky
oh the reason Charles Martinet wasn't at the premiere was because he was busy at a convention in Orlando

Nice to see he cares for fans
I mean, it's not his movie
it should have been, but it's not
ye
oooooh Kit and Krysta went to the premiere as well!
https://twitter.com/kitandkrysta/status/1642318431579152385?s=46
Can't say I know who they are
they hosted Nintendo Minute
This might be the first movie I see in theaters since Endgame.
The movie isn't complete unless those two do a live action scene to lead in.
Charlie Day is like "okay, get in"
2 days to go! I'mma be Patient 0! lol

No, I don't necessarily rely on critics scores, but uh
It's a bit scary
oof
47 vs 8.0 user score
good point
most likely critics aren't going to like it, but fans are going to love it
I'm probably going to go see it anyway because a) I want an excuse to go outside
, b) everyone I know will be talking about this for a while so there's significant value just in being able to participate
i wont shut up about this movie for like 3 weeks
and then when it comes out digitally i again wont shut up about it
it's going to be like The Batman all over again
when cap finally stops talking about the mario movie, the sequel wouldve released by that point
lmao
Yeah, I'm not trusting those critic scores either, especially metacritic. The audience scores are gonna mostly be low 80s to high 90s, guaranteed. That said, even all the positive critic scores are saying that the story's a little thin, but we were kinda all expecting that. The days of Mario having super deep and compelling stories have been over for a while now (last one was Dream Team, iirc).
i mean
This one's gonna be all about the hidden Easter eggs, the wonder and excitement, the colors, and the adventure, rather than the destination.
this movie is based off the mainline games which have never had particularly deep stories
Yeah
I wasn't expecting this movie to do well with critics, but I expect it to do very well with audiences.
It's a fact of life: people love Mario, no matter what the "story" is.
hold on a second
i am going to POINT and LAUGH and SMILE at the wahoo man and there's nothing you can do to stop me

Bursting with infectious energy, vibrant visuals, and smart implementations of franchise history, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a fireball of animated fantasy.
#IGN #Movies
From all the polarizing reviews, I expect it to be a great movie
4 hours till I'm in the theater!!
just got out of the theatre
it’s exactly what we expected: by movie storytelling standards, competent but unremarkable, but the fan service is off the charts so we’ll have a lot of fun with it
What would you rate it as?
uh, I dunno, 7? I don’t really do number ratings
would you rate it: mario? Luigi? Wario? waluigi?
What we all wanna know is was King Goomba in the movie
||I don’t remember seeing him, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he was one of the other kings invited to the wedding and I just missed him||
||oh man oh man||
Yeah, this is about what I expected. Sounds like it'll be a good time for most of us.
I'll probably go Thursday night
Y’all just go to movies huh
when I have the week off anyway, yeah
It's not often there's a movie i actually want to go see
I got 20 minutes before I leave for the theater
the D&D movie and this were the first movies this year I had any interest in
(I'm just not feeling John Wick atm)
Imma probably go see that new Kraken movie from Dreamworks. Seems interesting
I don't see very many movies in theaters. And I usually see my favorites through reactors
ixrec did this happen in the movie
https://twitter.com/camillecailloux/status/1643323544695349249?s=46
no
||Bowser does interrogate Luigi but only that first line was in the actual scene||
||not only that, his singing is a running joke||
||YAY||
ixrec im so excited
im going to get the special popcorn tin
i can keep all my gay little items in it
my theater had that too but I don't like popcorn
WHAT
I am NOT spending 15 bucks for a novelty item...
i am 😎
I like popcorn, but not theater popcorn. It tastes like salted cardboard. Real popcorn that you pop yourself tastes amazing, especially with real butter.
Holy frick 15 dollars
That was a great movie!! Cringe in some places but not too much fan service, great action scenes and hilarious jokes, I give it a 9.5 out of 10! Oh and definitely has sequel bait/material
||But that Banzai Bill scene tho! I nearly busted out laughing when it suddenly turned to face mario. Like they've never been homing like that unless they're red or cats lol so it was seriously unexpected.||
It does
Theater popcorn is amazing
I spent $44.80 today at the theaters.....Not doing that again until I get a job
I already seen the movie!
I’m going to see it in about an hour and a half
I’m amused at all the news headlines saying it’s deeply terrible
Yet the audience score is 96%
Is good!
Fuck critics, that movie was ballin
Just got back from it
I also got a special popcorn tin but it's not the cool box and now I'm kinda jealous. What cinemas had that?
What was your favorite scene? Obviously spoiler tag it, but I'm curious
This is a spoiler channel, it's not necessary
Coming in here is acknowledging you may see spoilers
Anyway, I loved the overall brotherhood between Mario and Luigi, but I can't really pin down a favorite scene
I liked the Mario vs. DK fight
As I stated above earlier, my favorite was the Banzai Bill. It just caught me so off guard when it actually homed in on Mario lol
I also enjoyed the references galore to not only Mario but other Nintendo IPs
Punch Out, F-Zero, Kid Icarus, etc
Don't know those so I wouldn't have recognized them
All classic SNES titles alongside SMB
So was this confirming Mario and Peach are suppose to be an item in canon lolol
Like DK literally called the flirting out I find that hilarious
Well that was pretty good
A nice torrent of Mario franchise references strung together into a Mario style story
In true Nintendo fashion, and deeply unusual to the film industry, they have not released the soundtrack to this film. Anywhere.
Also what’s fascinating is that Nintendo owns the film, not Illumination, despite Nintendo not making it. The copyright at the end of the movie was very clear about this.
They are the sole authors of the film as per the copyright.
That must’ve been a long argument with the lawyers
Nintendo’s aggressive protection of their IP continues to be bordering on obsessive
Some sad news, though. Grant Kirkhope wasn’t credited for the DK rap and he’s really sad about it. The movie just credited it as “From Donkey Kong 64”
I saw the thing! And agree with both scores given - it’s a bad film with a barely coherent plot but also an excellent way to just keep stringing Mario references together for ninety minutes
(So basically a Mario game, but a film)
My only disappointment is that it could have had even more Mario references
Saving those for the sequel(s)
There’s like 40-ish years of material to work with, after all
I just watched it and I blew up
I was about to give a rating but I need recency hype to die down for myself before doing that, I'll wait about a week
It might be an intentional thing as well; if Illumination wants to portray itself as a sort of mercenary film company, one you can hire without having to expect to share ownership of the product with, it might pave the way for other companies buying the services of Illumination for their own IPs
"Mercenary film company" just sounds funny.

So funny they have to use audience score because they can't use critics score

Sonic 2 literally also did this
to be fair, this is a product where the audience score is the more useful metric for most people anyway
Yeah I'm not saying it's bad
uhh
Well I rarely watch movies
haha why even mention the score
it's been a few years since I went out of my way to watch Oscar bait
I think the last popularly loved movie I’ve watched was puss 2
this tweet is an invitation to challenge them with the critic reviews
what qualifies as Oscar bait
Cats
?
Cats
i know what it means i was wondering what some examples would be
atm I'm just not paying attention to the cinephiles who would've told me what the latest critically loved / good oscar bait flicks are
I suppose the simplest stereotype of oscar bait that's relevant today is dramas in present day or historical settings that depend on actors portraying compelling characters
often as opposed to sci-fantasy action epics with comic relief
(this is obviously a painfully reductive way to classify all films made in our lifetime, but you get the idea)
oh duh, Joker (2019) is probably a good example
(it definitely was not oscar bait in the original, narrow sense of a marketing strategy specifically centered on getting awards to make people want to watch it, but it's "that type of film")
I think Oscar Bait is a nice sandwich, you put it under a box propted up by a stick and then if you're lucky you capture Oscar Issacs
The Lighthouse (2019) is another one that got some discussion here
I'm pretty sure oscar bait is basically a film that's rather unpopular with anyone except the people who vote for the oscars
yeah but The Lighthouse is the best movie ever
it did drift heavily towards that for a while
but these days whether a movie is the sort of thing oscar voters like seems almost entirely decoupled from whether it's popular or liked by its audience (yes those are two different things)
which is why the usage I usually see now is that vague type of film usage that's more like a genre cluster than anything else
In someways it feels a bit like Atwood insisting she's not writing science fiction
yeah, ultimately I think the term itself is dying out because we just don't care about oscars much any more
because of all the bait
I really think people got turned off by a bunch of rich people congratulating themselves on works that are neither popular or even particularly well known
wasn't there a film a few years ago that was basically hollywood on hollywood?
"Hollywood is really great" - Hollywood
anyway I heard mario is making a decent amount of money so that's probably all the big N cares about
Looking forward to the Legend of Zelda film
I'm not sure which film you mean, though IME "write what you know" leads to every medium having a disproportionate number of works about its creators (books about authors like Stephen King's Misery, video games about game makers, films about moviemaking like Singing In The Rain or Sunset Boulevard or La La Land)
It might have been La La Land
🎶 Without a nickel to my name / Hopped a bus, here I came
Could be brave or just insane / We'll have to see
agree that's part of it
I think another part is that general audiences are usually not after something radically innovative that experiments with how films can tell stories and makes you feel like shit about whatever or challenges you to think through really difficult problems
or a relatively standard narrative that makes you feel like shit
and it's fine not to be into that; I was for a little but these days I'd much rather have my popcorn action flicks
you don't like experiencing depression in imax?
I do not
yet another part is the explosion in high-continuity TV shows that could tell much longer stories than any single movie could; even if you do love the language of cinema and deep emotional dramas, you might just be more drawn to TV shows these days
Breaking Bad comes to mind; that's 100% "oscar bait as genre" and depressing AF, but it was also wildly successful
very true
simple generation gaps are also likely to be a factor
historical prejudices against animation and against "genre" films largely don't apply to anyone my age, but were standard enough for a while that the oscars needed a separate animation category, and it became cliche for the best sci-fi/fantasy movie each year to win best makeup/effects/etc instead of picture/actor
yeah
tl;dr "it's complicated"
Very insightful
Even though this is true, it's still a big middle finger to the critic score and I'm laughing at how blatant it is, lol.
Nintendo always knew that the audience score was gonna top everything else, and I think they were gunning for that rather than the critics. They know that their fans and the kids would just eat it up.
One of my favorite parts of the movie was Luigi immediately going to bat for Mario when he's captured by Bowser. Defending him and saying that any princess with good taste would like him
And for the record, I agree with Nintendo on this one. The critic score for this film deserves to get ignored. We all knew it wasn't gonna be some masterpiece of cinema. It was gonna be a fun, joyful, cute movie about Mario becoming the hero we know him as, and that is enough.
dawww
The brotherly love was real
I enjoyed the ||nihilistic blue luma, that was edgier than I thought the film would allow
||
"There is no escape except the sweet release of death"
Entire prison groans
a movie is either:
critics-95% audience-15%
or
audience-95% critics-15%
no in-between
Ummmm...
that feels like an exception not a rule
two towers of 95%
ok GT i get it
also keep in mind the tomatometer is a uniquely terrible summary of even critic opinions, because it relies on reducing every review to a binary good or bad
a 95% tomato is more like "nobody thought it sucked" than "everyone thought it was amazing"
Paddington 2 has like 100%
a film not sucking is amazing these days
because no one hates that movie
wait until Paddington 3 drops and it gets 150%
oh it's only 99 now
never heard of paddington til now
WHAT
they're like the best warmest nicest kindest happiest movies ever
they feel like a warm hug
I have both Paddingtons, but have never seen them. All I know is that it's about a talking bear who lives near London and...likes...honey...
...
.>
marmalade
marmalade yes
Oh, I thought it was honey. Never mind then, I thought I saw a connection.
i think Pooh and Paddington would be friends
As I said, I've never seen the movies.
yes
The ||luma|| was great, best character.
Why are we spoiling the character? They were shown in a trailer already.
Including their jokes.
oh, I never saw that
There's nothing wrong if people want to spoil tag.
Are we talking about the movie?
Yes
Yay!
I do enjoy it, from beggining to end
Also, that page from the commercial is real
I just wait for the film to be released in my country on April 20th (early Eid), I hope I will go to watch the film at the theater!
The soundtrack is out now on Apple Music and whatever other streaming services you like.
h-h-h-hooked on the brothers

While watching "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" (2023), I could not help but think of two other movies: The 2020 film "Sonic the Hedgehog" and its 2022 sequel, "Sonic the Hedgehog 2". So let's just look at the ratings:
Sonic 2020 got from me a 4/10 rating
Sonic 2 got 5.5/10.
And now, wanna know how I rated Mario?… ||9.5/10||.
It's that good.
I've heard Detective Pikachu was good too, but… this might be the movie that breaks the gaming movie curse.
And this is certainly the movie that finally proves Illumination's worth as a capable film studio.
…Is it? I’m not convinced it’s better as a film than their other works
I wanna see Sing 2 since I kinda like Sing
For that matter I think it’s also only acceptable as a “video game movie” in that it is a bunch of references to a series of video games. As a film it is incoherent.
Its key feature is that it didn’t even try
Which worked well for it!
I found it very reasonable
time to buy another ticket?
no now im gonna wait for digital haha
maybe i'll see it again if it comes to my home town theatre
oh, you had to travel for it?
I don't know where that is
it's the capital of Iowa
I see
that was so good omg
i don't know how someone who isn't a Mario superfan like me would react, but i felt nothing but pure unadulterated joy throughout the entire movie it felt just like the games and Mario and Luigi had cute brotherly moments and Mario and Peach were super cute together and Bowser was really funny and
gahahahah
is it the best movie u ever watched?
yes
my highlights are
-seeing Jumpman voiced by Charles Martinet (his name in the credits is Giuseppe)
-seeing Mario and Luigi's family !!!!!
-Mario stumbling his way through all the pipes was super funny
-Peach and Mario's love at first sight was really cute :3
-seeing the Sand Kingdom in the travel montage !!!!
-Donkey Kong coming out to the DK Rap was funny and epic
-the entire Mario vs Donkey Kong fight was super fun and cool and i loved the cat suit
-THE RAINBOW ROAD MUSIC ???? OMG?????
-Mario's awful attempt at flirting with Peach lol
-Bowser's "Peaches" song was really funny
-the Rainbow Road sequence was cool
-the eel from SM64/Odyssey swallowing Mario and DK was fun
-Mario and DK using the rocket barrel from DKCR and Tropical Freeze was a neat reference
-the Mushroom Kingdom fight with Mario and DK fighting Bowser's troops on the ground and then Peach fighting all of the guys on the floating island
-Mario using the tanooki suit to direct the Banzai Bill away from the Mushroom Kingdom like Superman was awesome
-the entire final fight in Brooklyn!!!!!!
anyway critics were dead wrong and this movie is amazing :3
Yeah the final fight was really awesome
I just loved how faithful it was to the games
I truly believe this is how Mario and Luigi would act if they could speak
I built a Super Mario themed domino project to celebrate the release of The Super Mario Bros. Movie! This setup contains 18,000 dominoes, which I built over 24 days. It features Mario characters including Toad, Princess Peach, Luigi, Mario, Donkey Kong, Bowser, and more :)
See how this was built in my detailed BTS video: https://youtu.be/Ga-oOG...
||Bowser singing give me cringe feelings||
Also, if you have emetophobia take care with the movie.
i dont remember there being vomiting ? except in the brief 5 second scene of Mario throwing up after trying the obstacle course
Yeah, if the dude have a too much strong emetophobia even gags or coughs can trigger them.
So it's good to warn that the scene is not visual and not audible but we understand he is doing it.
‘THE SUPER MARIO BROS MOVIE’ earns $377M in the film’s worldwide opening weekend.

I walk into the relevant r/movies thread and it's like it's a bunch of captainmarios. everyone seems to love it
actually, if pinkie were to undergo mitosis, the first step would be withdrawing her limbs and plasmatic extensions prior to dividing the organelles and then the DNA. THEN you get cytokinesis
I am about to watch The Mario Movie
See yall in a bit with my in-depth and deep review
Review:
REALLY FUN MOVIE
MIYU LIKES
mama mia
The star scene with the epic music version of the star effect sound
I smiled the whole scene
that hit right on the feels of happiness and nostalgia
yay
you guys are making me want to go see it
it is good
It’s worth seeing
Just saw the movie, was an enjoyable watch, definitely need to rewatch to catch all the details/references
I can't see it because it keeps selling out.
So I saw it
With the BABSCon gang
It's okay, pure sugar, the plot is all over the place
The animation is excellent, the music is great
But yeah imo the plot absolutely is a disaster
Bowser was far too silly for me to take seriously imo
I think the characterization of Mario and Peach is excellent
I wish Luigi had more screen time, he just kinda did nothing until he got the star power thing
I didn't expect Donkey Kong but I guess he is canon to the Mario Cinematic Universe and it's fun and works.
Seth Rogen as donkey Kong and jack black as bowser was really fun
I wish Bowser had been less silly
But I guess that's the vibe they were going for
Idk
I forgot who voiced donkey Kong until he did the iconic Seth laugh
Idk who Seth Rogan is but whoever they are they did an excellent job with DK, yeah
The whole movie went for a silly vibe
I think to its detriment imo
This version of bowser is accurate to the canon
Perhaps
He does try to get peach to Mary him with that particular wedding outfit getup in one of the games
I also wish that they had never gone to the human world and had their final fight there
I think it's more important that Mario proves to himself that he can do it and succeed
I agree
I thought Mario entering the Mushroom Kingdom world at the beginning was a bit random and silly, but I was willing to suspend my belief for that bit, I don't know how else you tie the two aspects together
Them coming back to have the final fight in Brooklyn I just couldn't
And again, I think that aspect is soooo irrelevant to the story
Like almost to a detrimental aspect. It pushes the point of Mario succeeding too far
Tbh I had no idea what to expect plot wise other than a Mario vs bowser fight
As in, it forces an external realization of Mario being successful instead of the internal realization that he actually needed imo
Also I haven't played Mario games in awhile, I'm used to a more serious and threatening Bowser instead of the Nintendo family-friendly push towards sillyness
Which is a driving factor in me not playing Nintendo games
If things feel more real, the stakes feel higher
MLP does a very good job of making the villains actually feel threatening
Nintendo has aggressively pushed the games to be more and more family-friendly and silly over time
And I think that's to their detriment
Also the dog scene was completely pointless and a waste of valuable time
Replace it with a short montage of them struggling to find work
Bowser has never been super serious or threatening???? the only time i can think of where he was is Galaxy, all his other appearances he's been pretty silly
this is such a weird complaint lol
He's quite literally one of the silliest villains ever made. The only one who can rival him for equal parts silliness and menacing (off the top of my head, anyway) is Eggman.
Bowser is a guy who created a giant robot arm for the express purpose of picking his nemesis, his brother, and two random Toads out from a brunch party with Peach and then winding up a pitch with said arm and throwing them halfway across the kingdom.
But delicately. As in, first two fingers move Peach's chair a few feet away, and then it grabs the Mario Brothers.
that was funny
And of course, the whole reason why Bowser Jr. stole all the Shine Sprites was so that it could power a gigantic jacuzzi for Bowser to bathe in.
And let's not forget literally ALL the silliness that Bowser went through in the M&L games (although he was also pretty menacing in them too).
Misty must be from the N64 era
Bowser was kind of a real bad guy in 64 and Paper Mario
I'm glad they went all-in on the "marry Peach" motivation because, of all Bowser's canon schemes and motives, it's the only one that is a) more interesting than your standard rule-the-world nothing of a villain, b) makes it really easy to portray him as hilariously pathetic and, in the relevant metaphorical sense, "small"
I mean, that's usually his motivation in the main games too
He just goes about it in a weird way
No Bowser, you are not supposed to cage your future wife over a pit of boiling lava and spikes.
I guess it's been a while but my memory was that only in Odyssey was Peach herself Bowser's goal, and usually he just wants to conquer the whatever and if marrying Peach is mentioned at all it's just a formality to crowning himself
He only appears once in Sunshine but there the whole point is to kidnap Peach to play house
man I remember none of Sunshine
Few people do
90s kids do..
It's Mario's "Sonic 06", but not nearly as broken or terrible. It's still fun as f`ck, but can also be very annoying and has one of the dumbest stories in Mario history, and has some of the worst NPCs and side missions in Mario history as well.
its my favorite 3d mario because it came out when I was like 9
wait... you're not?
Shit.
BRB

Galaxy, Bowser’s Fury, SM64 wasn’t too silly (his third battle music was pretty intense)
But yeah, Bowser in general isn’t particularly aggressive. A bunch of games like the Paper Mario games have made him out to be a joke
I still remember most of Sunshine. Fun game. Quirky but fun.
Now I want a paper mario game where bowser was movie level threat
You should play the first one
Yes, I'll just go buy me a new gamecube...
Nintendo 64
You see the problem?
N64, Switch Online, Project64 is an excellent emulator
Bowser was an ally in the third one
I've said it before. I.do.not.know.how.to.emulate.games
I need to finish Super Paper Mario
after spending a lot of time on emulation, I've found the RetroArch meta-emulator is by far the easiest and most reliable option; sadly the consoles with BIOSes still need that magic file downloaded separately, but aside from that it "just worked" for the dozen or so consoles I've asked it to emulate for me
true
(the Gamecube is not one of those consoles, that one worked out of the box)
I'm sure I'd like the first 2 Paper Marios, but I'm a guy who likes Sticker Star unironically. Like, my 2nd favorite of the ones I've played (3 lol)
somehow it's far more reliable than even using the individual emulators it's wrapping; I have no idea why raw Dolphin is so much glitchier than RetroArch wrapping Dolphin but it is
Alas, the GameCube is not a cube despite the name
The dimensions are wrong
It’s a GameBox instead
Personally I’ve found that RetroArch and similar frontends make emulation more complicated by virtue of adding a lot more UI
Most emulators work out of the box, really
Basically all Nintendo emulators except the Switch and WiiU don’t need a BIOS or firmware for example
weird, I have the exact opposite experience
even UI-wise, RetroArch is literally fewer clicks and menus to get all the same stuff done most of the time, including for Dolphin with GC games
(even before factoring in having a single unified "history" for all the consoles I emulate, so I can completely forget about which program was involved for which game)
RetroArch was baffling and super buggy IME
I just don’t use it because it made everything harder
“Peaches” from ‘THE SUPER MARIO BROS MOVIE’ is eligible to be nominated for Best Original Song at the Oscars.
