I am a teacher from a university of applied sciences from the Netherlands. I teach pedagogy, the study of childrearing and child development.

Some students recently fount out about ChatGPT and I've been wondering: how can our systems detect a paper that is fabricated by AI? Should we be worried that we won't be able to tell the difference between an 'original' paper and an AI generated one, or might that be an overreaction?

There's an issue currently with the fact that it can't be detected because of the factor that what it outputs is just words at the end of the day so there's no official detection for it, the only way that it would be theoretically possible would be to have a separate AI scan over a students previous exams and if it detects a massive change over a section of time then flag something as a "Possibly written by an AI" however currently there isn't anything, apologies about this.

and another issue is that you won't be able to prove it otherwise due to the fact that it was ai-written so it should be different to most things you'll find online so it'll be even harder if not impossible currently to be able to 100% prove if someone has cheated an essay or similar, until a counter for such thing has been developed there's not much you can do unfortunately.

Issue with that is that if someone has an issue with writing with pens etc... then they're usually given permission to write it on a laptop

and most times essay homework will be given for home-work so not written in classes so there's no way to currently counter this.

However, traditional research does have it's place, and creating a theoretical framework from which you introduce your research method is something that every university should be competent in. The thing is sapphire when you specify the more AI's become good at solving simplistic issues/problems/tasks, it's already been done and an AI is very capable of doing such easy tasks, this function has been capable for almost half a decade now iirc, most of the complex and advanced AI's are just being kept back due to laws and fear of what an AI would do in society so to the fullest extent we don't know what an AI is capable of fully doing however it should be noted that a lot of breakthroughs have happened with AI's the past couple of years.

and AI's can already outperform humans in a lot of factors and work industries, it's just being kept back due to fears as said before.

I mean you already have my view personally on it, and if people have to result to an AI to generate a large amount of text for an essay then it shows a lack in the educational system and showing that things are too traditional, that they have to rely on paper-only based methods instead of making it creative and interactive like every project should be, giving the students something truly to enjoy and work towards at home outside of school, otherwise people will cheat (and have been for years) because the resources and tools are available to them and it speeds up wasted time on something they likely won't have enjoyed otherwise.

Correct ChatGPT doesn't access google. The only way I've seen possible is through like node app middle layers-- but they don't call ChatGPT, but instead davinci-model-03

Negative. You can use OpenAI api's to generate content from a prompt. How you handle that would be outside of that api. So like-- whatever language you are calling from-- you might process the result into a pdf-- and then using an integration with G-drive-- upload it.

I am not certain how many tokens this limit is.

Who would they be plagiarizing? Personally, I am finished with school, so I don't have to worry about about this. I think everything is gonna change soon enough though. Ai will most likely be accepted and incorporated in schools down the road. I don't see it as immoral, but I was always of the mindset that there should more of a focus on kids learning than being evaluated.
