I haven’t seen anything official about it. But it’s likely, there are some models in stealth testing which could be from OpenAI.

And just a quick thing about new models: most people won’t see any difference anymore, the models are way too capable already to have any big impact. The next frontier will be science. We can still make big improvements there. The email you let it write won’t get any better, the research for the next meal won’t get any better. (Just silly examples of course to get a point across)

And obviously, some countries ban erotica altogether, in those cases it would be a selective rollout. OpenAI isn’t stupid, they know exactly what they’re doing. I honestly don’t get why OpenAI even has a bug-report button when stuff like the Mac app Project/model switch bug is still there. Very strange behavior on my 5.1 this morning. I primarily use it for my image rendering and prompt development. Today in response to my prompts, GPT 5.1 retrieved images from sites like Etsy. That never happens. So I went to do it again, it acknowledged the error and did the same thing again.

I once again said that I am creating my own image and don’t want it to retrieve anything online. It then produced an original image, but decided on its own that it didn’t really follow the prompt as well as it should’ve so it wanted to do it again.

Finally, I got the either or prompt asking me to choose from one of two responses. I had previously asked it never to do that when I’m prompting because to fully evaluate, you would need to actually try out both prompts. Still I chose the prompt on the right. It once again said it was not happy with the image that it gave me, and said again it hadn’t followed my directions but would do it next time. Somehow I was able to select the other prompt (which would normally disappear when the first prompt is selected) and that one was the rendering that the GPT told me it was happy with.

I’m just not used to seeing behavior like this. I’ve been using GPT through all the changes over the past 2 1/2 years but this was odd enough for me to post about.

I had a similar experience last week, maybe slightly longer ago where it retrieved images from the web instead of an image generation. I can't remember if I was using 5.1 or 4o at that time. I mostly do my creative explorations under 4o. I ran a prompt under 5.1 just to see what would happen and the very first run retrieved images instead of generating the image. I explained in my response what it did wrong and what I expected (i.e. using the image tool) and it ran the generation correctly. The rest of my experience didn't mirror yours, but it had its own oddities.

When it generated it correctly, 5.1 took 36s to "think". I was tempted to skip it, but chose to allow it. The listed thinking step focused on whether it should break the guideline to not return any text or include an apology. It chose the latter. So it returned my generated images plus the apology and acknowledgement what it did wrong.

Where it gets weirder is in a new thread, I re-ran the image gen. Just to see if I get the web results or image gen. I got the image gen. But I also get another apology--guess from the recent chat history context in the other thread. Even though in this run nothing was done incorrectly. 5.1 was apologizing again for the prior mistake in the other chat thread while also still generating the images.

Thanks for your response. I had also posted in our curators chat. Zoom pointed me to an announcement that was made around 1:15 this afternoon. Apparently they are testing new responses in the GPT. After I read it, it seemed to me to be the explanation for what is happening. I hope it’s become clear to them that the new approach does not work.

I just fear that the engines that I created even before 4.0, which have already been compromised because they were formed with D3 as the main output, are going to be toast. I’m at the point where I’m just gonna design a new one when there are finished working the kinks out. No idea when that will be. But I have the guts of my engine concepts so I don’t think I’ll be especially difficult. All I know is I’m glad I am now working multiplatform. It’s important to become less reliant on one engine/platform alone.

Every once in a while, I get routed to a sub-model that's not brain damaged. Every once in a great while. I've been a plus user since early 2023, just saw an 'upgrade to pro for better answers' banner timed right after an extremely frusturating experience in which ChatGPT seemed to be practicing weaponized incompetence, either that or some kind of major inference bug. Context window is like swiss cheese. The timing of the 'upgrade banner' -- I was literally hovering on the cancel subscription button. If the december update doesn't resolve this model stupidity, I'm at the end of my rope with this company. An open weights 4B param model is smarter than this supposed frontier model that I'm paying for. It's really quite amazing.

I wonder, it may not be possible to get the model to 'not see Grokipedia or any other specific site' yourself (unless you own the site and adjust its robots.txt to say ChatGPT is not welcome to look), but it probably is possible to discuss with it what sources you want it to use for discussing results.

I 'kind of' do that in my personalization, I specify what fantasy (a custom world and mythos) is welcome, and that grounded realism is otherwise a pretty strong preference.

I canceled my ChatGPT subscription because it kept insisiting I was under 18 and blocked my ability to use certain features unless I sent in copies of government ID and selfies, which I refuse to do. Now I constantly see "Memory Full" and when I try to Manage that memory, I'm finding only about two pages of text. Is that really considered full? I deleted a bunch of the text, but, it's still full. How much do I have to remove before it's not full?

There's no specific measurement of memory listed in any of the helpfiles about memory, like https://help.openai.com/en/articles/8590148-memory-faq.

If I was in your situation, I would likely open memory, copy the whole list of memory and paste it into a document file, then continue to delete them until I found whatever measure.

It's also possible that your account is being affected by a bug related to memory, like potentially them not actually deleting despite your clicking for it to.

I'll explain I have my ChatGpt customized as a persona and when I ask anything it'll give me in detail things according to the personality I gave it. Anyone else who uses GPT for biological engineering purposes getting totally blocked by filters at every turn? I'm a student in my final year and am try to utilize ChatGPT to help with some problems in a Vaccine Development Capstone project, but it refuses to give me anything actionable. I asked why and it cited the use of Caustic agent and Biohazards, but I know for a FACT that this process is a max of BSL 2 (lower level biohazard). Sometimes it blocks things it has literally said earlier when I try to get it to summarize. I'm not asking to make a bomb here, I'm asking for reactor flow and kinetic values that I can't conceive would ever be harmful, especially since the process is entirely isothermal and has no runaway reaction issues.

I'm afraid this is the start of a bad path where they limit any useful information, or god forbid lock it behind payed accounts (which I have).

I'm also NOT a fan of how it states that the content is limited because, and I quote, "This type of information may be used to benefit or to harm people." Harm makes sense, but benefit? Excuse me? I thought it was weird that I was not being told I had reached the free limit to wait till (time) to keep using this model or roll back to the even dumber version. Feature Request:

I would like to suggest a new interaction layer for ChatGPT designed to dramatically improve long, complex, multi-step conversations.

The idea is a Conversational Navigation System (CNS) based on “nodes” (conversation anchors).
Users could manually mark any message or section as a Node, making it act like a checkpoint inside the conversation.

Core features:

1. Create Node:
   The user clicks a message and selects “Create Node” or uses a command/voice command like “Mark this as Node X”.

2. Node List Panel:
   A right-side panel shows a list of all created nodes with titles chosen by the user.

3. One-Click Return:
   Clicking a node scrolls the chat directly to that point, instantly repositioning the conversation without manually scrolling.

4. Continue From Node:
   After navigating to a node, the user can use a button like “Resume from here” to restart the chat context from that point.

5. Voice Navigation (optional):
   “Go to Node 3” or “Return to ‘Business Model Draft’ node”.

6. Node Sharing:
   Users can export node sets for collaboration or continuity.

Why this matters:

ChatGPT is increasingly being used for complex planning, product design, multi-layered business development, and long-term creative work.
Manual scrolling to find past sections is inefficient and breaks workflow.

The CNS solves this by giving the user:

Fast navigation

Structural memory

Context continuity

Higher productivity

Better collaboration across lengthy threads

It transforms ChatGPT into a true workspace, not only a chat window.

I hope this feature can be considered. It would massively improve usability for long and professional interactions.

Would think that would be good but its asking things you already told it in prompt or details that dont even need to be asked. Goes like 2-3 confirming details when you just want the image. And the way it works the longer the chat goes on for the less it will remeber the original prompt and reference photos so you'll have to remind it again anyway😩

For the second day in a row, I had the same issues with GPT 5.1. Yesterday it took me four or five new chats, following my continually asking for the picture to generate. It started self diagnosing, and eventually with the last command finally worked.

Knowing what happened yesterday I immediately let it know that there was no image again and to retry. Today it took me only two new chats to get it working properly.

Since it’s a bit confusing, I can’t pinpoint exactly what triggered it to work, except for the fact that I asked it to analyze the issue and it was able to self diagnose, and clear the pathway to let me generate images. Best advice I can give is to let the engine know you’re not getting images, (repeatedly if necessary) and to please correct it. It was the only reason I got it working today and yesterday. I’m just letting you know what happened with my account. While the issue still isn’t fully corrected it allows me to work around it. It was a matter of me, forcing the issue with the engine I was talking to. Not sure why it took as long as it did, but it did work eventually.

I’m not going to show my thread. But it definitely self diagnosed and gave me instructions on how to fix the problem. I’m not doing this on a browser. I’m doing this on the open AI app.

It also gave me specific words to start the new chats with. That wasn’t magic.
