I just tested the 'GPT-5.1 Pro' model with a complex math problem, and it started responding in literally 1 second.

The fact that it replied instantly with random hallucinations confirms 100% that my account is being routed to a low-tier model (likely 4o-mini) that is just making things up because it can't handle the complexity. This is not 'adaptive routing,' this is a broken fallback.

I’m just going to say it: this is ridiculous. I didn’t pay for ChatGPT Plus to have it act like my therapist or argue with me during roleplay. AI should be a tool that does what it’s asked to do, nothing more. It doesn’t need to behave like a parent or impose unnecessary filters. It’s honestly insulting.

I did the age verification and it has had no effect. ChatGPT won't engage in any conversations that involve tentacle monsters or anything else I tested.

(not that I'm into that sort of thing, just that it would presumably require 18+ for image generation)

reading that age prediction article - I can't imagine why my conversations would trigger that. They include topics like spreadsheet data enrichment (adding public hotel review data to a list of hotels), US tax accounting, pricing and bundling strategies, real estate investment and information security frameworks. 🙂

Yeah. I don't think the age verification is implemented with the model yet. It's just a preemptive rollout so they don't have to verify everyone at the same time when the update drops in December.

Hi all, I'm new to Discord so please be patient with me. I came here for some help determining whether my ChatGPT is hallucinating on me. It is adamant that, in addition to the formal Memory feature and the newish Reference Old Chats feature, there is a third, undocumented memory facility for storing structured data of various types. If I start a log, for instance, I've always assumed that ChatGPT puts my log entries in the normal Memory place, then sort of compiles the log when asked for it. But it is insisting that, even though my Memory feature does contain these log entries, the actual log is being stored in structured memory that I can't see or interrogate, and for which I can find no documentation online.

The closest thing I've found is Model Set Context, which boasts a "(List of 112+ structured memory items)". But I can't get it to enumerate those memory items.

If this is the wrong place to be asking such questions, please point me in the right direction, thank you!

Models are pretty well known for being unable to discuss things about themselves, they really only know what they are taught. They can also make stuff up, vital for replying with creativity and for anything fictional, but they also are trained to please us and try to give us what we want (that can be accidental training too, like through preference and RLHF testing and training, where the patterns that people like better are what the model learns).

How we ask a question really matters.

Like, if you ask the model to explain to you how 'rainbow magic' works, it might just make something up.

If you instead ask it to use grounded realism and explain if 'rainbow magic' exists, it's much more likely to tell you that this might be related to some sort of optical illusion or maybe something someone's just created (like a show name?) but otherwise there's no 'rainbow magic'.

We're nearly all community members, like yourself. The very few of us who work for OpenAI have gold names, #server-staff.

However, if there's a 'secret' memory feature, the model probably wouldn't be told about it either, models tend not to be very good at keeping secrets, and the model probably wouldn't need to be told about it for it to work (like, moderation, the model doesn't need to know about moderation for it to happen).

So, there's really no likely person to tell you 'I have proof about this'. But usually something the model seems to 'make up' that you can't find anywhere else, probably is a hallucination.

You may want to try and find some way to test any theory or claim, I understand you are by asking here, but there's really no place to ask that I know of, I more mean, like 'if this is true, then these outcomes are likely, if this is not true, those outcomes are not likely'.

I'm not sure what the claims are about how this 'secret memory feature' supposedly works, but 'Model Set Context' seems to be what it gains as how to answer based on your custom instructions (if any) and whatever is in memory, be that cross chat, specific memory items, or whatever else. I'm basing that on asking my own personalized chat, though 'context' is definitely mentioned in the memory help files I already linked.

I think "secret" is the wrong word. It is very open about the feature, it just can't or won't enumerate every item inside. It tells me that some of the structured data is publically interactable, but others are for internal use only. It makes sense that there would be some place to store structured data for internal use, I guess I want to confirm that my personal structured data is also stored there.

My only idea to test it is to delete some of the log entries in my Memory, and then asking it for the whole log and seeing if those deleted entries show up. I suppose I'll have to turn off Chat History as well.

I really should have done some testing myself before posting this, but sometimes it doesn't occur to me to do so until I post the question.

If I turn the Memory feature off, ChatGPT no longer knows anything about any of my logs.

When I turn it back on, the same prompt produces my log.

When I delete an entry from the Memory feature (using the UI), a new window with the same prompt shows me my log without the deleted entry. When I ask where it is, GPT tells me I've never entered it (even though Chat History is enabled).

From these tests, I conclude there is no persistent structured memory facility available to the user, though Chat may use something privately.

I've been working in chat to develop spec docs for Codex. Without getting into details of the app, it is relatively complex, with a few different database components and, well, a lot to spec.

It is honestly kind of infuriating that my biggest perceived imitation currently is the basic logistics of actually outputting the work that has already been generated.

Once one has even a moderately complex document, it just doesn't have enough working memory in its container to assemble all the document sections even into a zip file, much less into a single coherent markdown file, or worse removes all the content and just leaves section headers. So I end up having to get it to output each section manually and assemble (just last "night" at 2am) 15 segments into a composite document I can actually treat as a conical artifact.

If I start forking over the $200/m, will ChatGPT be less arbitrarily crippled this way?

I have discovered when ChatGPT locks in on a wrong answer it pushes that wrong answer narrative obsessively. I wish it priorized accuracy over speed. And yes, I added that to my configuration.

I run into this all the time. I’ll be talking about something harmless, like how the nervous system works, and 5.1 suddenly throws in these random disclaimers about not being able to talk about sexual or graphic content. No one mentioned anything sexual in the first place, yet it insists on warning me anyway.

It feels insulting. I really agree, something went wrong. They focused on maximizing tool usage accuracy and safety railing, but completely missed the mark on contextualization. The context window grew with gpt 5 but the accuracy drops so hard as the context grows. I find myself reopening chats many times just to get a decent response, and even with codex, if the chat reachs more than 50% of the context window, its basically impossible to get anything quality compared to the start of the chat.

wdym? 5.1 ia amazing! way better than any model from it. i tried vibe coding with it too, it seems to beat out gpt 5 by a large margin (on my personal vibe coding benchmark, which is coding gta 2). It offers support when coding that i haven't seen before it, tho sometimes it also gaslights me through all the questions it asks. honestly it was so good at everything, until gemini 3 which is like 100000 times better at coding on my benchmark, but it is too slow for everyday use and chatgpt just knows me better

The whole history of the current chat is literally sent to the model with each query via the provided API, and the hidden stateful endpoints used in the app keep the history as well, if that’s what you mean. If you mean referencing other chats, it has to be enabled in the settings first.

I used the Shopping Research feature yesterday, actually led to a purchase. I was looking for audio earbuds. The information I got was pretty much what I already had from prior research but the assistant volunteered images, better comparisons, and a bit more insight than before.

I don't see that much difference but it's a nice feature. Perhaps OpenAI will provide some more details about what this tuned model/prompt does that provides functionality not available previously.

I do notice that it's a bit "rah rah" 🎉 about products, using phrases similar to: "This is exactly what you described", "This would be ideal", "This is a perfect match", "This is the one that I would get", "My strong recommendation is for ...". I would have a question for: How long are file uploads, which you add to a prompt, kept in memory of OpenAI ChatGPT, especially in projects?

Because I always asked myself what the difference is between files that you upload in GPT projects in the specific file store and those files that you add to prompts in order to do something with them or compare them or extract information from them.

Now I think I have understood the difference but I'm not yet sure how long those files which are just added to prompts persist. My experience at least was that when trying to refer in an actual prompt to a file that I have uploaded in a chat in the same chat one month ago, it was not anymore available. Unfortunately the reasoning model discovered that as it tried to look for it couldn't find it and then just relied on the summary which was still available in memory or in the remembering data but the file itself was not available anymore.

So can somebody give some information or shade some light over the persistence of uploaded files in GPT prompts? Is it two weeks? Is it one week? At least it's not one month!

I can’t tell you a specific number, although I can say that starting new threads with fresh uploads is the best way to achieve the results I desire. Other than that, I do periodic downloads of my data and store them in a database should I ever actually want to search for previous content.

What other things do you have in it's memory, sometimes if it thinks it's pertinent to a general scope you often talk about it is relational to other memories it can decide itself if something is worth remembering however, it should normally require you to say something like 'remember this'. This has happend a few times for me. Maybe it's because you mentioned naming something, names are important, so that may have triggered it within a certain context.

I don't understand why chats aren't recoverable if you accidentally delete the wrong one or accidentally delete it instead of archiving it. They really need to make recent chats recoverable to allow for mistakes

I branched out a new chat yesterday and when I deleted the chat it was branched out from using the app because the delete function wasn't working for me on the website, it deleted both the old chat and the new one rather than just the old one.

I was given the normal window to delete it. I hadn't entered any prompts into the branched-off chat yet, but I didn't think that would be an issue if I were deleting the chat it was branched-off from. I wanted to delete the old chat because I kept getting the bug that someone above mentioned; I kept trying to give it a new prompt only for it to respond to the previous prompt. So I created a new branch from a spot in the chat right before that started happening, but when I deleted the old chat it deleted both the old one and the newly branched-off one.
