If you mean the difference between chat.openai.com and the GPT-4 API tho: API has a few more settings you can meddle with, such as setting the "system message", max token count for the answer, "temperature" of the response and so on.

I have it ask for a google search or an article summary when it needs it, and i have a script to feed it that. but it almost always ask to google then just trust the first result there even when it knows the result perfectly well and it's not likely something that will change.

That's a bit complicated. ChatGPT seems to limit a single input message to around 4k tokens, which by a rough estimate is about 3k words. If you want to know the amount of tokens a specific text translates to, you can look at https://platform.openai.com/tokenizer .

It read a redacted set of data, some from the internet, some from "partners" like GitHub, some from open source text databases like Project Gutenberg. But I doubt they had access to the data from book publishers. Alas there seems to be a dataset of books called "bookcorpus" consisting of crawled "unpublished" books.

Always costs, you have two options: 1. Pay for ChatGPT Plus, where you get a limited amount of GPT-4 conversations (25 messages per 3 hours atm) or 2. apply for the API waitlist and once you're in, pay per the amount of text used.

With 3.5, the quality of responses can vary wildly on the prompt you give it. Sometimes certain words make a big difference, sometimes reminding it of certain stuff you want it to do or certain details that are important, help a lot.

Probably. But always keep in mind: GPT-3.5 is also very capable, especially for coding. It's just not that good. Like, GPT-4 is around for around three weeks now. Before that everybody was flashed about how good GPT-3 was. For any serious use case, you have to go to GPT-3 anyway because 4 is way too expensive.

It wasn't previously having issues like this. i pasted a list into it early where I just asked it to add quantities to the end. It did that, but it also added a random letter to each I didn't ask for while maintaining the integrity of everything else. Not the type of thing I would have had to double check before. Still could be an unrelated fluke.

What also might work: Make GPT-4 write an explanation to a "dumb" coder (3.5) of how to approach a problem in a series of prompts and then feeding the tasks step-by-step to 3.5. So you use less prompts on GPT-4.

Poe has several models. Sage is gpt 3, ChatGPT is 3.5 and GPT-4 is, well, 4
there is also Claude and Claude+
GPT-4 and Claude+ in Poe are limited to 1 prompt per day though
