If you kill fenix you can get lucky and get big mags (or also small) thats probably the reason for the different sizes
The asval is pretty good and deals huge damage with its fire rate
But with fmj you are often better off shooting the legs if fighting against geared players

Hide, keep yourself hidden and stealthy. For the first 15min of raid, avoid players ultill the gunfight sounds stop, give it like 10min after the exfill opens. Then go grab the stuff from the dead players. I did that in the first wipe days.

Tracer is visible, so it helps to aim better, by seeing the bullet trajectory you can basically just hipfire the gun by aiming the line of fire to the target.
Also helps if you have pacience to fill the last rounds of your mag with tracers, you will know when it's running out of ammo without needing to take the mag out and shake.

In terms of damage, the Tracer it is a little bit lower.
Ex: The AK-Alpha FMJ deals around 50 of damage, while the tracer does 48 (According to wiki)

It's still valid to use it. Some missions will also ask for it. Had a mission asking for 8 headshots using tracers on assault rifles.

But beware that while they let you see if your aim was off, helping you to correct it, it will also let your TARGET see its trajectory and reveal your location.
