Swinging your weapon at an enemy won't always hit, your Attack stat (determined by Dexterity I think?) will determine whether you hit

also there are enemies outright immune to physical attacks. Ghosts for example (you meet one in an early dungeon soon after getting your first magic weapon, to teach you this)
