It's kind of odd to me that I don't really hear much about Luka Doncic in the MVP discussion. He's having a great individual season (as usual), and the Mavericks are like half a game out of the 4th seed in the west. I get that some of these guys are on teams with better records, but DeRozan, Morant, and Embiid have a better supporting cast than what Luka is working with.

and unlike guys like DeMar for example (another darkhorse candidate), Luka’s got the insane all-around numbers to back it up

He's playing at an absurd level. Luka has carried his brilliant play last postseason vs the Clippers into this season and has been tremendous. I feel like so many people were ragging on him about his "weight issues" and some of the "struggles" he had at the beginning of the season that he has been riding under the radar.

The one caveat to the record argument is Jokic. The Nuggets have a worse record than the Mavericks, yet Jokic is arguably the favorite for MVP. Don't get me wrong, I am a supporter of Jokic winning MVP this season, but Luka is an example of people putting too much emphasis on records and other negative narratives. Luka's team and Jokic's team don't have elite records, but look at their supporting casts. Those two are the literal definition of what an MVP truly is.

He has struggled this season, obviously; however, he is taking way too much flak for the struggles the Lakers have been through. This is a poorly constructed roster, which is not Westbrook's fault. As a whole, the Lakers are easily one of the worst defensive units in the league. Outside of LeBron, they also struggle to shoot and score consistently. It also doesn't help that Anthony Davis gets sidelined with an injury anytime someone looks at him the wrong way.

Westbrook is taking less shots per game this season than he has since the 2009-10 season. This is also Westbrook's lowest usage rate season since 2009-10. One huge problem with Westbrook is that he has lower usage rate numbers this season, but he still turns the ball over at an absurd rate.

Westbrook has always been a non-efficient shooter and a turnover machine. Him doing those things on the Lakers shouldn't be surprising.

I'm a Ben Simmons fan as well. He's has the tools and physical gifts to be an elite player, but he has so many issues on offense. He's not aggressive and he is unwilling to shoot. Potentially, a bigger issue is that he is such a poor free throw shooter. Maybe if he was a better FT shooter, he would be more aggressive offensively.

It's a complete mystery as to how his shot fell so far. He was never the most efficient but he wasn't whatever the hell is going on now.

There was an interesting post on r/nba explaining how Westbrook might have the Yips, which did make sense of the situation. Never really an efficient scorer (and his numbers aren’t THAT far off from his averages) but now he can’t even hit the rim on a lot of these shots.

Idk, that is an interesting theory and could be right. What I like to look at is free throw percentage to tell if a players mechanics may have changed. His last year in okc he shot 65% from the line. Every year before that he was closer to 80%. But like you said this could also just be yips especially when your home crowd is actively encouraging you not to shoot and the boos.
