#Making new textures for Chipped

i must make a concrete block for every set with sand now
was starting to work on the blocks that were bordered, and i had to change one of Qzimyion's blocks a bit more
the border of Chiseled Tuff aligns perfectly with the border for Chiseled Tuff Bricks
for Qzimyion's calcite blocks however, it does not
this would already be mildly annoying on it's own, but several tuff blocks i designed use an identical border to Chiseled Tuff. the incorrectly aligned border on calcite however would mean similar designs wouldn't fit like the designs on tuff blocks did
so i redesigned the border, to be more in line with how mojang designs tuff (though the border isn't a copy and paste like tuff, i did want some of the original design to show)
In other words, redesigned the Chiseled Calcite block to connect much more smoothly with the Chiseled Calcite Bricks block, because most of the set will borrow part of both blocks' designs, and i want them to connect properly.
ok so
i have not been happy with a few of these textures
like
at all
gonna really try and lock in today though
For now though, I will only focus on making new textures
i was originally like, confused about what i'd do for the single blocks, but i'd rather figure that out, and have it look distinct from tuff
i know i said i'd wait a bit, but it was bugging me too much lol
much happier witht he newer one
the current pillar line up
much better now, at the very least
I can actually say the quality of the two sets is comparable now
Why isn't the lattice properly latticed ? 🤨
what do you mean?
Half the gray lines are constantly on top instead of alterning up & down
Oh
Well that's how I made the original, and I've just recolored it whenever I've reused this texture
Actually I see what's wrong, I can try and fix it later today
I remember it was originally me being new, and not properly counting where the lattices would loop on the texture that made me make it like that
wait..
i messed up still lol
there lol
If you know, you know
Aaah... bliss
Real
my friend made this one, basing it off of Terraria textures
i took it and did this
thinking about making borders for most deepslate blocks slightly darker
gonna competely redo a couple of my deepslate textures
i feel like i could make them stand out more
I can always add the one's I'm replacing to the mod later, cause it's not like i hate them, i just would like a little more visual consistency in the set
Oh, in the mod I made an extra block that's just a single square
I intend to do that for Calcite too btw
Is that randomised ? Or patterned ?
Lol
I thought that was its own block ! Like, the top of a collumn !
4, as in...?
like the texture is randomized between 4 slightly different looking tiles
Does that make 2 ? Normal brick and square?
thought that looked better than just one static texture
Ooooh yeah you have to look closely
I thought you meant you had 2 OTHER patterns, like 3 block-long bricks or 1½
these would be all my "Massive" tuff blocks
Like something like this, I mean
Where you'd have a 3 block-long brick, and another version where the "middle" block texture has a seam in the middle (rather than on the side) so you end up with two 1½ bricks
oooh
Just as a suggestion, I mean. Not telling you what to do. You already do so much !
well, i did have a plan to add an extra add on mod for chipped that was JUST bricks
Massive bricks are fun 😆😆
My favorite part of Chipped and Re-Chiselled
cracked variants, mossy variants, variants with randomized brick sizes, etc etc. and that could extend to these massive bricks as well
And is there some code in it that knows which texture to use in adjacence to which ? Like, how does it know to out two 1-block bricks next to one aother rather than a 1-block on one end and the left half of a 2-block on the other, that doesn't connect ?
Or are those actual separate blocks
oh idea
i could do a horizontal ctm
and make it so you can make a massive brick any size you want
I've started messing with horizontal and vertical ctms recently with my deepslate blocks lol
it wouldn't be perfect, but it would let you wrap that massive brick texture seamlessly around an entire wall or building if you choose
Okay but the question is : who would actually use it ? Don't get me wrong the idea is cool but 4×8 bricks seem like overkill... 😵
Just, balance out the supply (ammount of time you're willing to spend making that) and demand (how many people would benefit from it)
true
I'll think about it more when i get closer to it
that's also why i think this would be an extra add on, because I would imagine some people would love a bunch of little brick variants, but some people just want the texture pack with the few left over blocks i also made
Also, I would have to see how this would work, this sounds like something CJ would primarily have to help with, cause I'm bad with code
I could do massive tiles, and 3 block long bricks, but past that, like you said, I'm unsure how much people would use them.
one more calcite/tuff comparison for the texture pack
i don't think i wanna design another face tile, so i got one block i could replace with basically anything
What's that ?
Spiraled Deepslate
ended up using the last face tile for this instead
made it brighter so it merges with the tiny bricks well
starting the modded blocks now
v0.2 is out!
now you guys can use those calcite and deepslate textures for yourself
damnit
the localization isn't working 😭
well, the textures work at the very least, i'll fix the localization tomorrow
When did chipped add spiraled blocks?
Oh they've always been there
The default texture is from MC Dungeons, which is actually true for most of those stone textures
also, fixed the block names, they appear correctly now
Deepslate modded block time
was gonna have a worn out variant like Rechiseled, but opted for a flipped version instead cause
choose your own floor pattern
this one is just the center texture for the cobbled deepslate tiles block from Rechiseled
but i felt like it was a fitting replacement
what happened
Also
Commissioning an art for a few Polished blocks and Bricks
Tried picking some niche blocks I don't really have an idea for yet
Oh and a few Ruby blocks, causey mod includes Rubies
Commissioned these for the pack
I asked them if I could use their work, because it's ✨amazing✨ but they said it's up to the client.
But then their comms were like, three bucks a sprite, so I figured I'd buy textures for some sets I wasn't really sure what to do with yet.
Thankfully this did give me some ideas of my own, so it was pretty worth it imo
looking at blue ice
the artist accidentally showed the texture map from Dungeons they used for the Runic Ice Block
MC Dungeons has a few variants of that block they use, and you can see them all on that particular block
gonna make the new texture base off one of those variants i think
Finally
The cobble variant texture does not look ugly
It finally looks good
Nothing, just thought it looked awesome
(You have to picture the .GIF with the Gangster's Paradise choir 🤣🤣)
And who made these ?
Remind me again the definition of rOUNDED
Based on the snow golem face ? Now THAT'S a reference !
I knowww, but it's a polished block now because chipped doesn't have a single polished block texture
You like them? Cause I was debating putting the faces on a different looking block. Like I'd keep the blank one, cause I like the shape, just use something else for the faces
tbh i was worried how i'd make snow stand out, but still be obviously snow
think i did a good job, adding more colors to it. making it stand out
and ice and packed ice are identical in vanilla, so i'll only be showing these three
also the before and after for snow is gonna be funny, cause for 90% of them, you won't have any idea what the "before" actually is supposed to be lol
gonna make the spiral and pillar have a ctm similar to deepslate, they'll connect vertically, but if they can't. they'll conect horizontally
or i reckon one of the blocks will be a horizontal version of this
the spiral block will have a ctm though
also, i see the three other inlayed blocks as a wild card block
cause i ain't making three versions of a square lol
might make this one of the pillar textures, uncertain atm
so intersting thing about this texture
this proves a few things
one, the stone textures for chipped are from MC Dungeons, cause this is straight up a texture map someone forgot to crop
two, that means these recolors were done manually. which is especially frustrating cause Chipped's original texture work is actually good - but they got lazzy for the stone textures in particular, and decide to take the long way of doing it.
also three, my version ended up being the alternate texture on the map, but slightly redesigned to fit Blue Ice better
Thanks!
Most likely no textures today, or at least, very late if I do
Melting snowman
Man, all these textures are... cool
REAL
Interesting development
Instead of making an ungodly amount of modded blocks
I'm gonna make a texture pack for EveryCompat as well, concerning whatever it adds to Chipped
MUCH less work for me, and I reckon most players use that mod anyways
Well, much less coding in particular, which is what I loathe
This means Twilight Forest, Biomes O Plenty, and Create will have support in the texture pack, not the mod. Which is significant because that's several hundred blocks I don't have to make, and it's just a light texture pack for you guys
when you make a texture that sucks, but just have a feeling a small adjustment would make it work, it really sucks
but when you finally figure out how to make it look good, it's like crack
i'm liking the new one much better
ok i found something bizarre
i originally lined up chipped blocks in a test world based off of if the also had rechiseled support, to see which rechiseled blocks i'd use/redesign
was looking at a few blocks not in that line up
for some reason
there was an attempt to make Packed Mud specifically unique from the stone/dirt type blocks
I reckon i'll still give it a once over, but like, the blocks aren't just a lazy recolor, only for that set
was thinking about the EveryCompat portion of the textures
most excited for Create tbh
got a spark of inspiration too
the mineral stones from create all have a "Cut" and "Polished Cut" variant, but no polished variant in the traditional minecraft sense
was thinking i'd design the new textures based around the idea of a true polished block
Kind of stuck on Crimsite and Orchium, the red and yellowish-beige stones respectively
But for Veridium and Asurine, the green and blue stones, I was thinking Malachite and Sodalite. Both have a distinct marbling, and those minerals actually look like the Create blocks kind of - it wouldn't shock me if that was their intention in the first place when designing them, since Veridium and Malachite at least are both derived from copper.
Was thinking about redoing the tiny Tuff and Calcite bricks
I shall address this after the Christmas update though
BIG BRICKS 🧱
YEAH
so i gotta split the christmas update in two
hopefully CJ actually uploads BlockVault by christmas so i can have that part of the update out as well
but imma do Packed Ice, Blue Ice, and Snow for the texture pack. Then at least Candy Cane and Gingerbread for BlockVault
and that'll be before Christmas hopefully
then afterwards I'll work on the other Create Confectionary sets, Ice, and a couple of my own custom blocks after
Gonna have to call off the Christmas update
PC issues
Which I was able to figure out what needs to be fixed on it, but it just isn't happening any time soon
Will still make the next update Ice though
Iii'm mister whiiite christmas
I'm high on crack
So true
Thanks!
CJ was indecisive about uploading the mod anyways, so that's a lot of stress off my back having to make sure it's out ASAP
I think I'm just going to put off all things outside the texture pack for the time being.
So that means
Ice and Snow will be next
Then cleaning up some Tuff and Calcite textures
Then I was gonna get every Brick and Polished block out of the way after that
And from there, I wanted to work on Obsidian and Dripstone. Wanted these two blocks to be designed similarly to Tuff and Calcite
ok, finally got my PC back
still maight take a few days to actually get back to work though
hi there, wondering if you are interested in making PBR?
it is not hard to study, and I did made 2 python scripts to make it much easier
im currently making PBR for chisel reborn instead of chipped
i can share my palette
it is the sample visual effect i have achieved so far
i believe it would be better with your texture
that would look really good
though atm, i'm focused on getting the base textures out first
but i will say i would consider making a version of my pack that supports that once it's done
sure, i can collab with the pbr texture once you decide to make that
Ok!
Gonna finally update you guys soonish
just double checking a few things
got a couple of annoying ctms done for ice and snow
What was annoying btw, was i had to make a couple optifine formats, because these shared common textures i didn't want them to. That and my WIP folder was a little disorganized, cause my PC broke down halfway through these textures 💀
hi Samuel, are you redrawing all of them or just some part of whole the chipped
i can see you have done ice, snow, some stones and prismarine
uncertain about planks, metals, gems etc
I intend to do metal and gem blocks as well. I intend to redraw most of Chipped, block wise.
I'm unsure if I'll do planks or logs. I would prefer to find a texture pack for vanilla wood that looks good first, to base my redesigns off of. So for now, no.
Blocks I will never do are Wool and Glazed Terracotta. Wool, because I think those textures are already acceptable, and Glazed Terracotta because I would point people to Reglazed Terracotta - that texture pack is very good, and you can make it work for 1.21 by changing the mcmeta file (I'll have an official 1.21 for Rechipped at least, don't worry)
Additionally, I intend to eventually cover EveryCompat, every version of it.
So the texture pack will eventually cover mods like Create, or Twilight Forest. BUT that is after 1.0 releases, and vanilla Chipped is finished
will you rename the files or change the file structure?
thats (making textures, not edit the structure) pretty inspiring, i rarely see someone make remasterd textures for mods
Thank you! I got inspired by all the other mods that add blocks out there. I originally started making this for an SMP I have, because my friends wanted a lighter pack, but I love all the options these kinds of mods bring. So it's a way to have hundreds of unique blocks, but still only one mod. Plus this makes most blocks have a purpose now lol
i personally hand drawn the pbr for gregtech modern before
I don't think so. I know internally it's called "RehauledChipped", but CJ would prefer the structure stay the same for our future projects that use Chipped and my pack, and it's close enough to the final name at any rate.
thanks, i think i may start with the wool soon
Nice!
I forgot if I said it here
But after I push the Packed Ice, Blue Ice, and Snow textures, I want to clean up some Tuff, Calcite, and Deepslate textures.
I think I'm happy with Prismarine, but I'll have to double check tomorrow.
do you have a github or something
But let me know how your work goes in the meantime!
I don't atm
thx
I'll have to talk to CJ about that
would CJ merge your texture to main or just as a separate pack?
Separate
seems fine
Oh shoot yeah
The only thing that might be annoying for your work
Glazed Terracotta
Cause I just use a different texture pack for that
thats fine? as long as they don't overlap eachother
They don't
would you like POM effect for wool?
like this
though i dont recommend that
@novel talon a short question, how do you make the texture pack to work? I unzip the chipped trying to use it as a texture pack for editing, but it seems the folder could not be recognized by the game
it usually works but here it doesnt work
i dont know how do you make it works
nvm
just miss a pack.mcmeta
I use programs like 7zip
It lets you look at each jar and zip without unpacking anything
Also be sure Chipped is untouched, the texture pack should be a complete separate file in your "resourcepack" folder. You can copy and paste, but the original should be untouched
@drowsy slate what are your thoughts on this?
hmmm.... is this basically for shaders?
I'm unfamiliar with the format but I could learn it and we could potentially adapt it if Samuel's willing to learn how to do it
Oh and another thing
For Rechipped, I can leave the file unzipped, but for our mod, for some reason I have to rezip the files for the textures to show
conflicts with Athena or the Modpack setup usually
They were willing to help us do it btw, they'd just like to know how we want it to look
I don't have a problem with the idea
I personally won't be able to use this so I don't have a preference on how they look sadly
I'll leave this opinion up to you
for once whatever you say goes in this case
Ok!
I know a couple of people in our SMP use shaders, so they'd actually get use out of it
I like this, but what other ideas did you have?
chipped is untouched, this is how it looks like, add a _n and _s png
i wrote a fundamental tutorial of these textures before
PBR guide for basic knowledge please readhttps://shaderlabs.org/wiki/LabPBR_Material_Standard_s.png for RGB channel of _s texture simply choose the named color from palette and cover the correspond regionthere is already a set of palette for common materials in minecraft, from wood to gem,...
not really, these can hardly be presented on 16x
besides there are some issue with the yellow harshe quilted wool
the pattern is wrong
here in the ctm folder
this is in black wool folder
there should be 4 png
but in yellow wool there is only 1
@novel talon are you going to redraw terracotta? i remember you said you wont draw glazed terracotta
i pretty like this, from another texturepack
I believe i will redraw terracotta yes
I am unsure what to do with the wool
do you have a method to recolor the wool with other colors to fix this?
like the white wool
i believe this is a code error
i tried to edit the blockstates in the texturepack but just partially fix the issue
why is he there
Funny
I'm unsure what's causing this
What version are you using?
I'm using 1.20
Which shouldn't matter for the texture pack, but maybe there's a bug for later versions of Chipped?
im doing 1.21
there are issues with the blockstate file, though i edit the file in texturepack
it still doesnt fix the problem
not sure where to report the issue
I would recommend asking the Chipped team themselves
ok
I think I shall
Revisit this pack at the end of the month again
Gotta at least finish what I currently got, and polish those Tuff and Calcite textures like I said I would
As far as after that, I'll think about what to do next after all that's finished
is there a way to download this?
Yeah!
If you can't run Continuity in your mod pack, anything that renders the optifine texture format works
I just put down Continuity because that is my personal choice
Welp
Kinda annoyed rn
Idk what to do with this project now
I had the creator himself say this was a neat idea, only to find out out of nowhere they were texturing Chipped themselves
I might still try and finish it, since I've put money down on some of these textures
Yeah, I gotta admit it's uncool of them to pull the rug from under you
Going "good idea" while thining "VERY good, in fact... VERY good... TOO good..."
Yeah...
I think I will finish what I have currently in progress at the very least though
which are those ice and snow textures, as well as the textures related to the ones i commissioned, and polihing some older textures
I did consider extending it to EveryCompat, which would mean it would do something Chipped can't, which is include mods like Create or Twilight Forest.
So maybe there's a future for this pack that works even with the updated textures, I don't know
I'm sorry if it came off that way. We have wanted to do something like this for a while, but the overhaul being done to chipped is more than a texture overhaul. We're essentially remaking the mod, with not just new textures but new palettes entirely.
Chipped 5.0 will only launch for Minecraft 26.1, so your resource pack can still function on 1.21 and older. In addition, our code for Chipped is MIT, so if you want to fork Chipped and upload your own fork of it with your textures, thatd be kosher and would be really cool to see!
actually
We're uploading all of Chipped as it used to stand as "Chipped Legacy"
We were planning on discontinuing it after we were done with 5.0, but if you want to continue it on afterwards I might be open to it!
like a "Roots Classic" and "Roots 3" situation. Maybe we'll launch it as Chipped Classic instead
It would be nice to have a Chipped Classic instead of deprecating it after a certain update. There are also mods like EveryCompat that rely on the current version.
But yes, if there is a bigger reason behind it, I understand. It was just a little jarring because it did not sound like this was being considered at the time I was only considering making a texture pack.
well mods like Every Compat will just need to eventually support the mainline Chipped version, as that is where we will move the bulk of our support to
