I think levels 1-5 in fighter levels offer fighter currency. You might just be able to grind out 3-5 fighter levels on a character you haven't played yet for 500 currency.

They are updating the game (not sure if they already did) so that you can try out all the characters in local and training mode. I'd recommend you play a little bit with characters to see who feels nice for you and then looking up some guides online for characters your interested in before buying anyone.

Ultimately, just pick a character you like for you. No matter where someone puts a character on a tier list, this game is relatively well-balanced so there aren't any truly unwinnable matchups. Just have fun!
