There's a mode called training which you can use to actually see if the character is suitable for you or not really.

Like I doubt anyone can easily master 3-5 characters to the point they can switch between them simultaneously in a tournament

you level up gems from getting the rift milestones, the first time you beat a rift node, and completing rift nodes that are daily missions, which you get 5 per day. If you've done all of those things, wait for the daily reset, and then do the daily missions again
