It has to do with the fact that your king is now in danger and your pieces are too far to support your king. (c4 would've blocked white's rook, therefore no mating attack)

your opening choices are pretty good, if you like reading chess books, i suggest reading "the complete manual of positional chess" vol 1 and 2, it's a pretty great book, I used it to increase my rating by 200 points

or if you don't really like books, maybe there are yt vids about your opening that will give you ideas for a better middlegame

just for a recommendation based on my personal experience: For beginner: White, i recommend italian or very basic vienna, (gotham reference) or london system. Black for beginner, maybe carokann, with the 3.c5 varaiation, which is really good. Or simply e4 e5 is fine. Intermidate white: i played Ruy lopez or if ur a 1.d4 person, then try the Jobava london. Intermediate black - maybe french which is what I did as it really helped me understand the middle game pawn structure. If not, you could experiment with the scandnavian but honestly, only if u like attacking. For Advanced white: this is where opening theory is a lot and people basically play random openings but still win cos their opening theory. But must positions either lead to Nadjorf or Nimso positions. This is just from personal experience though.

If you take the knight I take the queen
If you ignore the threat I take the queen with the knight
If you move the queen then bishop takes knight is a fork of king and rook

Bg4 is like a sacrifice of a bishop with check so you have 2 options:
Move the king and not take the bishop then we get a free queen coz of discovered attack
If you take the bishop with the pawn then we take the queen anyway and protect the rook from any attak

I think there are 2 ways to get more brilliant moves I think we should try the ICBM gambit and then we should see other gms and it's brilliant moves and understand why it is brilliant then we will look for such patterns

Basically deflection sacrifices are easier to get
Like the ones in paul morphy opera games

but the Nf6 variation is something that is very interesting
