So for context I downloaded nightreign at launch and really liked it, so much so that I also bought it on ps5 so that I could play it with my friend who’s never played a souls game in his life, obviously he didn’t know what he was doing at first and was a bit of a hassle to play with, but it’s all good we homies at the end of the day and I was just happy to play nightreign with some I knew. He ended up liking nightreign so much that he bought base Elden ring and I was very happy, I asked if I could watch the start of his gameplay and he said yea, I let him do his own thing and do whatever he wanted until he asked me how to get a base and start the game and I gave him some tips, then he said he wanted a way to farm runes, I thought this would be as a last resort so I said sure and told him how to complete white mask varre quest line up until you get to the rune farm in mohgwyn palace, then I left him to his own devices, so far he has beat godrick last time I saw, but then I came back, he has been at that rune farm since I left…he has been there, for 2 hours, just shooting that same bird with the arrow over and over, he got 2 million runes and then leveled himself up to level 104, keep in mind he hasn’t even fought rennala yet, I almost regretted showing him the rune farm cuz he’d just trivialized pretty much the entire game. At least that’s what I thought, obviously I watched his gameplay of him just shooting this bird for hours (mind you he is complaining about not having any good weapons when he hasn’t explored any of the map, in his words “he’s too scared to cuz he’ll just die all the time and that’s depressing” and wouldn’t stop asking me where to find good weapons, of course I told him, it’s his game if he doesn’t wanna explore then so be it, but I just wondered why the hell did he even buy the game if he just wanted me to hold his hand through it or rune farm the whole time?

Light and darkness signify balance and the existence of everything, chaos represents entropy. during the age of creation light and darkness sealed the 3rd aspect to stop it from devouring reality. fast forward a few thousand years. there are multiple worlds adjacent to each other like multiverses, in one of those worlds is a woman, a goddess who is obsessed with perfection. she is the goddess of mystery, memory, unbearable truths and knowledge, her name is Ariadne (ripping off actual mythology xD), in short she fails spectacularly in her pursuit of perfection, after years of trying to create a perfect world she failed again and again, coming very close but never what she desired. at one point she discovered the existence of the primordial aspects of light and darkness, she planned to use the power of the aspects of achieve her goal, while following that plan she accidentally released the previously sealed aspect of chaos. in the process it destroys her home world and tries to corrupt her and making her its vessel. ariadne resists for long enough for the other 2 primordial aspects to prepare a seal again and lock their chaotic sibling but in the end she becomes partially corrupted, she perishes there but her desire for a perfect world persists. it takes the form of an harrowing entity named "abyss" which is basically a twisted manifestation of the goddess's desire of perfection. it devours worlds which it deems "imperfect" to have a clean slate then start anew and create the perfect world.

Power System
Basics:
Humans and other humanoid creatures have divine lineages hidden in their being. “Humans” were born from the same primordial source that gave birth to gods, The ‘Primordial Aspects of Light and Darkness.’

However, to awaken one’s divine powers they need to break seals which were placed upon them to suppress their divinity- to save humans souls from being detected by the abyss and to protect their soul from collapsing under the burden of divinity, seal broken entities attract the abyss and act as a gateway for it to manifest into reality, the higher the seal count the more substantial this effect is. [Note: Refer to worldbuilding and plot doc for lore]

The Seals:
There are a total of 7 seals, breaking each seal brings the person closer to divinity. [Note: Refer to plot doc for modern obscured theological interpretation of the seal breaker status]

Seal breakers/seal broken beings are referred to as such:
Sealed/No seals broken = S0/Mundane
1 seal broken = S1
4 seals broken = S4 -> and so on up to S7

Sealed Abilities:
After breaking each seal, the person will gain a new ability related to their divine lineage, for example someone who carries the divine lineage of water may gain an ability called [Water Controlling] and be able to give shape, bend, utilize their surrounding water. In total a S7 entity/true god will have 7 abilities/skills.

All of the 7 abilities will correspond to their seal level. So, abilities unlocked at a lower seal level will be weaker than an ability unlocked at a higher seal level. Ex: S2 ability < S4 ability. However, as the person themselves ascend further on the path of divinity their previously obtained abilities will also scale up to their current seal level, in this way previously obtained abilities won’t become useless. So, while a S1 [Water Controlling] ability may become weaker than a S7 ability of the same water lineage it can still have practical and intelligent use cases which the user can utilize to gain an advantage over their enemies.

Domains:
Domains are what divine lineages are consisted of. They are the embodiment of mastery over an element/a concept/ an idea. For example, the water goddess’s domains can be water, starlight and reflection. A dragonlord’s domain can be fire, lightning and storm. There can be more metaphysical domains as well like mystery, memory, truth and knowledge. In short, domains reflect their wielders and the wielder’s mastery over various parts of their divine lineage.

Domains can be manifested as well. Manifesting a domain gives it a physical form and brings it into reality, in most cases a domain manifestation is a “personal space” created by the user.

The technique is called “Domain Manifestation.” There are 3 tiers to this:

1. Partially manifesting their domain, somewhat easy to do, most new seal breakers of S1-S3 stages can do it after a decent amount of training.
2. Fully manifesting a single domain, signifies the person has fully grasped the meaning of their domain and they are very skilled. Mostly wielded by S4-S6 seal breakers.
3. Manifesting multiple/all of their domains at once, doing this is very risky and draining on the user, takes a lot of experience and skill to even initiate in the first place. Only true gods at S7 will be able to consistently do this but we do see a handful of instances where S6s do it as well.

Domain Authority:
Simple, there can be multiple entities with the same domain and domain authority is the determining factor in such circumstances, at the very basic level higher authority is determined by seal count, so an S4’s authority over their water domain will be more than an S3’s authority over the same domain.

Before delving into complex mechanics let’s talk about 3 types of domains. Common, Rare and Unique. Common domains are things like water, fire, wind etc. Concepts that are not too complex and understood by many so multiple people can have those. Second type is “Rare,” scarcer than common, this type of domains are more complex concepts understood by few, for example “Judgement.” Lastly, “Unique.” As the name suggests, unique domains are unique to only a single entity meaning they have absolute authority over it at any point, its is extremely rare and we only ever see 2/3 people with unique domains in the story including both of our protagonists.

There are other factors that determine someone’s authority over a domain as well. So, people can have a different understanding of their domains, for example: someone could think that the fire domain exists to spread destruction where another could think the fire domain exists to light the dark path and fight for a brighter future. Different understanding of the domains plays a major part in authority levels. Some beings also resonate more with their domains than others. For example, someone who has personally inherited the divine lineage from the previous deity will naturally have more authority over someone born with a subtle affinity to water.

In short, it depends on 3 things: Seal count of the being, their personal understanding of the domain and their resonance with the lineage.

When seal broken beings fight another with the same domain it essentially becomes a game of “tug of war” of gigantic proportions.

oh heres a neat thing about domains and domain manifestations. when manifesting domains, the faith of the user in their domain matters a lot. if someone doubts their domain or thinks its ineffective, it will be ineffective. i have a chapter where a seal 3 entity defeats a seal 5 corrupted angel purely by sheer faith in their domain. this guy's domain is "tea-brewing" in his early life he used to sell teas in a stall. he loves his craft of tea brewing to the point where he thinks that brewing tea is a sacred-no DIVINE act. he sincerely believes that the world is nothing more than a vessel to create the perfect cup of tea. in the battle he manifests his domain with sheer will and conjures a divine teapot that literally sucks the surrounding reality of the abyss including the harrowing enemies into it and boils them into a cup of tea.
