Were you playing with someone else or did you use one of the two omen’s shackles? There is a light on an elevator that spawns another chariot, that when struck will rise up to summon it right on top of the other chariots. Using a shackle hits the elevator wherever you are in the dungeon, or you could just find it normally.

Also the armor set is the reward for destroying them.
