I was one of the first active talkers in #📚lore-dungeon and was even one of the few who asked for the channels creations. I probably still have the most messages in that channel considering how dead it is. I’ve picked apart genshin story and world building for 3 whole years and after playing hsr as well as just getting into more general fantasy settings it’s made me realise that genshin is an inconsistent mess that horribly describes its story to the player which causes a massive disconnect between the casual and dedicated reader.

i get your point and of course i also think that genshin could stand to improve on a few things (like appropriate representation, etc.) but i also think that the unknown is part of the fun! theorizing about the future is a timeless activity, and it is admittedly a great way to retain interest in the game
and yes, there are inconsistencies but i imagine that things of that nature would happen naturally when trying to cater to two different audiences (casual and hardcore)

• plus, HSR is built off the foundation of HI3 so there are already some things that the two share
  • isn't HSR meant to kind of plug the "what-ifs" of HI3? so naturally there would be less inconsistences if the game is dedicated to mopping them up

genshin is trying to serve two masters - the casuals don't want to go through 30 minutes of exposition but the hardcores don't want a flimsy background

• but lore casuals are more populous than the hardcore ones, so i believe that the writing reflects that to some degree

Genshins story telling was always slowly drifting away from me. I first noticed it in the absolute mess that was Story Quests, and that’s something everyone was slowly noticing. What really got me with those was the over need to have a final plot twist to make the core character seem really smart, but every-time it was needlessly unearned. Yelan and Al Haitham both did it but what really got me was Baizhu’s which was such a great story until the last 5 minutes.

Using Doctor Who as an example a lot of people had an issue with Mofit’s writing for this exact reason. The show would stop feeling like a show and people would just see Moffit’s attempt to sound clever, especially with the whole “name of the doctor arc”

I think it depends on the magic system that argument is being applied. For example, in a hard magic system governed by thought out laws, like for example in Lotr, this applies very well. But for soft magic system with no thought out laws such as hp, this doesn't apply at all.

like i said a while back, genshin is trying to please two masters since it was marketed to casuals but hardcores tend to spend more money
