NS0-162?
Yeah
6+ months of day to day admin helps with that cert.
it's not written to any specific doc or class either.
basic hybrid cloud knowledge is helpful as well.
I did a blog a few years back as to how we write the exams - some folks find it helpful to understand how the tests are actually written before they take it.
awww all of my fav ppl are on that thumbnail @mild hazel
Indeed. 🙂
I have a little over a year on an A250, but with exams I always overthink the material. Like if they decide to ask, if it's a tuesday and you have 3 AFF A900s, what is the color of the SSD's PCB?
lol. :). we don't have questions like that.
Purple, because aliens don't wear hats.
The questions on the offical practice test are actually from the test writing sessions. they're not just made up as examples.
Yeah, with the learning center stuff the questions are clear. I am used to ISC tier "everything is technically correct but only one thing is 'isc correct'"
Thank you!
Has the Learning Center crew ever explored a top tier cert with a practical portion akin to VCDX and CCIE? I can imagine what a heavy lift that is
That's been talked about several times. and a few A-Teamers push it when we have writing sessions/meetings with NLS.
I got CCNP en route to CCIE 20 years ago but bailed because of the hardware lab requirement. In todays world you could sim it all virtually
Do you still have any certifications with numbered diplomas embedded in glass? 😛 (Think I still have one of them somewhere. Can't remember what it was for, though..)
Last bit of swag folks got I think was the pins at INSIGHT
How the times have changed..... :/
what year was that? early 2010s?
Just checked. Dublin, 2012
Not all of them
Would you like an intro to Eva and join the program with us? She’s doing a great job of reimagining the whole lot end to end.
no not all of them your right @hearty perch
My first Insight was 2009 in Athens. Was before they started inviting customers along. Think I’ve only missed one since then
What was the one in LA? I think that was 2009 as well
My SE took me and I met Jennifer Edgell the first time. She was our resident Exchange expert and she helped me devise a Snapmangler for Exchange plan as we were virtualizing Exch.
Oh the good ol days
I told her that at Cisco Live last month, that she was the first person I interacted with at NetApp and we had a fun trip down memory lane
Was that the one where we were all evacuated into the street? Fire alert or something
Bomb scare, but yes
Then there were some protests the night of the offsite event so the busses couldn’t get to the venue
Somewhere I have a photo of Acropolis, mirrored in the glass face of the builings during the evacuation.
The world was a crazy place then as well
I kindof liked the events more before customers were invited. The presenters wasnt always the most ... energetic personalities, but comments like "good question. I remember thinking when I wrote the code....." were epic! 😛
I think there is probably room for different types of events for different audiences. Mind you I don’t work in that department so don’t quote me on anything. But I think the world has changed significantly the last few years, maybe smaller more frequent and more geographically dispersed events are a good thing. Less global travel, more local resources getting to participate, less expenses for attendees. Add to that everything that can be done with Hybrid events like Q&A/Panels etc here in discord and I think the future could be a bright one
We have some surprises in store for all of you in a few weeks for VMworld! #StayTuned
Hello everyone
Hello @cursive cove!
Is there a procedure for "joining" customer accounts?
We have a few customers that have changed names, and so new equipment are registered to the new name, and old systems on the old account. Also the customers user accounts are registered to the old name, so they are unable to see new systems on NOW.
I'm afraid I'll mess up entitlements if I start opening cases to reassign systems.
-I'm working for a NetApp partner/reseller
Open a "non-technical" case. If you'll sign-in to the support site first, you'll see a lot more category options available. There are two or three that fit what you're describing, so pick the best-fit.
https://mysupport.netapp.com/site/help
I've done that in the past, but had to open cases for each individual system. Might be ~30 systems in total.
Maybe I'll wait til the lady that does our renewals are back from vacation.
I don't want you to have to open 30 cases either! It might be quicker to wait.
Also, we need to move the customers user accounts at the same time. Their email is still the same, but should connect to another company name
Do any of them have a SAM/.
?
other option is work through your TPM and see if they ccan work through the bulk change.
Any tips for a small new company aiming to become a partner and eventually provide basic through advanced deployments? I’ve got NCDA, NCSIE, and I’m training a second employee to get those certs
Not really interested in reselling hardware/software just providing PS. Our companies’ only revenue atm is through Website Solutions for Small Businesses
Which region are you in? Maybe we can find the right contacts to put you in touch with.
I'd suggest heading over to https://www.netapp.com/partners/#become , regardless of what partner program you want to be apart of you will be asked to fill in this form - https://netapp.tap.thinksmart.com/prod/Portal/ShowWorkFlow/AnonymousEmbed/26c8b2c2-68d6-4b30-b522-a81075a97c56
Request will get routed to the local channel mgmt folks to review etc 🙂
@hearty perch I am in AMER conveniently located in Ashburn. I've got experience with deployments as an employee for an existing CDP though was the only one in the area (Which I still find unfathomable) @quartz veldt thank you for the resource. I have taken a look before and am going to apply soon. I am just concerned about how it might look being a newly established company. Thanks again for your help!
@half flame As you're more interested in CDP side of things, someone on this Discord from AMER can hopefully put you in touch with the right people. Filling in that form should also get you in touch with the right folks.
Let's give a big NetApp welcome to members of The Pub community joining us! Excited to consolidate these two great communities!
Now I have a legitimate reason to stare at discord at work!
Don't forget to do the thing that was mentioned in the Slack post 🤐
Is there a procedure to attach a NetApp logo to a profile?
I'm a NetApp employee, writing Ansible modules for ONTAP and others.
I'm with a NetApp partner, working with filers since they could be booted from just one floppy...
Toasters!
I don't understand how Discord is a better fit for this than Slack. This is just requiring that I have a separate app up, in addition to the one that I'm likely to already use for work. It probably just means I'll never be here
I mostly just use the web client for Discord
sure. whichever. it's still effectively a separate thing.
Slack have been making a lot of changes as they struggle to become sustainable as a business, one of those most recent changes would mean that there would be no history over 90 days available in the slack we used. That isn't a limitation here.
We also have a lot more interactive features in this platform, the ability to do stage channels, host watch parties, do panel sessions, have live Q&A sessions on launches.
More and more open communities are having to abandon slack because it is becoming a difficult to use platform for those not willing to pay for it as an enterprise tool.
NetApp low on cash, then?
but okay. Just means I won't be here unless I have a specific question. (I'm sure you're all crying at the loss.)
It’s not about cash and it’s not about numbers. It’s about bringing two similar communities together in the same place that has a future. There are things that Discord does that Slack doesn’t. And rather than make multiple investments and split-brain things, we opted to bring the ~100 actually active users from Slack over here. I’m sorry if it’s a disappointment, but we’ve got some bigger exciting plans for The Pub and wanted to integrate. I think if you give it a chance, you’ll find similar kinds of people helping people conversations happening over here.
It's also about how communities change with time, I've been around long enough that I remember being on BBS, IRC, then vBulletin/PHPbb, plus a whole myriad of things in between then and now. Discord is where people are already gathering, the coding group I am in has 110K users with 20K active at any one time. Similar story for the SRE/DevOps groups I am a part of. A lot of the modern tech stack folks have already settled here and that is a good barometer for where things are headed.
BBS rocked back in the day
vBulletin… that is a name I have not heard for an age.
There's some cobwebs on them brain cells.
I think I still have a couple of active vBB sites out there
I get that change is always uncomfortable, but sometimes its necessary
I remember converting to aggregates and FlexVols was taxing as well...
I think, and this is only my opinion, the driving force of Discord in tech has been that people in the technology space are often associated with adjacent communities already, so gaming, live streaming, content creation, programming, home automation, open source projects, block chain (the list is endless), most of those communities are already here and have been here since the platform started. So since I was already here for my gaming guilds and my consumer tech interests, it just became easier to find more communities here that fit the goals I had. The user model here is much easier for me personally, its one account, its tied to me and I can join whatever communities I want, I don't have to sign up each time, I don't have to remember oh which email was I invited to that Slack group again now. With the recent per server user profiles I can also keep things pretty well organised across what I do for my work and what I do for my hobbies.
I don't give a damn about "change". I give a damn about the fact that, since I have Slack open all the time for work communication, using Slack to interact with NetApp is virtually zero friction. Now I have to open up an additional app, and an app that is likely to be viewed as a gaming app at that. ("Hey, wfaulk, what's this you have open that says 'Playing Counter-Strike', 'Playing Borderlands', 'Playing Genshin Impact', 'Playing Hearthstone', 'Playing League of Legends', 'Playing World of Warcraft', and 'Playing Overwatch' on it?")
But you made your decision (just like NetApp support made their decision to require that I interact with email in order to log into the support site) and there's certainly nothing I can do to change your mind. I just think it's a dumb choice and that you should know that.
This is sad, I really liked the idea https://www.tomshardware.com/news/intel-kills-optane-memory-business-for-good, wonder what will take its place, I know there’s work on going with CXL as more of an industry standard
Optane was cool for niches, Intel spent so much that they have to try to sell it to masses and that made no sense
I think they missed the mark not continuing it and pivoting it in the HEDT market
Gamers would have benefited, content creators editing large video files etc.
Even software builds benefit from it as far as the testing I had done in the past.
Gamers have 1500-5000Mb/sec nvme ssds and 32-64GB RAM.
Adding a new component type that displaces storage probably doesn’t excite much
It’s more about adjacency, which is why Nvidia and others are working on things like Direct Storage Access for GPUs. The benefits of Optane for end users were around one less hop in the chain to get data to the right place. CXL and the Direct Storage APIs will resolve a lot of that going forward though
Holy cow, what is going to happen to VAST.
Their entire platform is built off of optane and qlc ssd's
Tips of best place to learn about Netapp and Spot to prep for an interview?
Beyond trawling the documentation you can look at,
There is a section on NetApp TV with a bunch of SPOT related content - https://www.netapp.tv/cloud?mcid=91161331710227571031226952374615371287
Some case studies documented here https://www.netapp.com/customers/netapp-it-spot/

Hi @eager bolt feel free to just ask in #╰・software and we can all try to help then
Hi all! Trident dev here, just moving over from Slack 😄

You can set it up to interact with your organization's SSO.
^ good point. Check out the identity federation section of the SSO FAQ:

@twin flint probably a better place, but have you seen the new SE/30 motherboard PCBs you can get from Kai Robinson?
I have! Pretty amazing stuff in that vintage hobbyist market.
No big deal if my SE mobo isn't repairable.
(I have an SE/30 that is ok, last I knew...)
@twin flint I’m in Perth Western Australia and I spent a while looking for an SE/30.. location is important since shipping is a great way to end up with a broken tube and there’s no other cities nearby. In a one year period, one came on sale here and it was about USD$800
I passed on that and kept looking.. then I had a friend randomly reach out and ask if I wanted one that a friend of theirs was looking to give away, and I got one for nothing! And a few months earlier I’d ended up with a bunch of ADB keyboards, including two which were the right ones for it- I gave one to a guy starting a Mac museum on the other side of Australia, so now I have my white whale of old Macs 😉
On my birthday last year I was working and out at a University I deal with for NetApp and had a friend who works there message me and ask if I’d like a Mac classic new-in-box that he’d found.. I think he was a bit surprised how quickly I showed up, since he didn’t know I was on campus at the time. Unfortunately the analog board was totally dead.. I’ve recapped it, but still no good. That’ll be a project for another day I suspect.
Nice! Yeah I got most my vintage computers back in the day when they were cheap - or even trash. I did recently spend close to real money for a NeXT Cube - that’s the other thing awaiting repair on my bench now.
ooh nice! when I worked at that uni, I was involved with the computer club - they had/have a nextstation. And two BeBoxes
I have one of them at my house right now, I've been trying to coax it back to life - it apparently died in about 1999.. I've got it back to showing a boot logo at least - I need to get back to making a bootable hard drive
I got a dump of the right one for it apparently (it's a pre-prod prototype, so the versions of BeOS that run on the production ones won't boot on it), but couldn't get it to boot.. a friend tried it and found he needed to do byte order swapping for dd.
Hi guys, just wondering where you can see the size of your volume snapshot?
Let me check
Will I get the Ransom ware feature by default if I am upgrading from Ontap 9.8 to 9.11?
Also is there any document proof of the same?
it's an add on license. but yeah the feature is there.
No, it is a seperate license you need to purchase first included on 9.10 systems - https://docs.netapp.com/us-en/ontap/anti-ransomware/index.html#what-ontap-anti-ransomware-detects
Yooooo -- Join us over in the Hang Space for the first round of Open Office Hours! (post-event edit: We'll see you next week!)

Time to get on board! Happy to see so many familiar names 😁
Whoot whoot, even Joost is here! 😉
Hey NL team!
Ugh, I don't want to change Discord to my real name though...do I need a separate account? 😛
There are per server profiles now, so you can make the change just here and it won’t be seen anywhere else

Hello all
morning tony
It’s interesting to see those figures in bulk, but they can feed the brand fanboys. I’ve seen the occasional “waaah we bought a NetApp and it comes with crappy Seagate/WD/Toshiba/etc drives” 😑
All drives fail eventually. Some sooner than others. We balance that risk with software and support contracts
1 is none, 2 is one
Isn't that like the close door button on the elevator?
@fast needle Hey Nick. How does a fellow NetApp soldier get staff creds?
Howdy!
Also, I'm affectionately referring to you as Aeon Flux from now on. ❤️
I'll take it! Flux also happens to be the name of my Tesla 😆

Were we supposed to hear music on there? I joined it once and I couldn't hear anything.
I just clicked on the NetApp Radio channel and it's playing Coheed and Cambria right now 🙂
May have been coincidental when I was shifting things around upon first setting it up. It’s all set now. Enjoy!
The plan currently is to rotate certain days based on the voting
As long as it's at least on par with the radio stations from Fallout, then we are good here.
I think Drew would take issue with that
I meannn, Diamond City Radio is pretty solid. I love that most of the tracks are real songs.
howdy!
hello !
A lil bit about me. I'm preparing for the NSO-162 exam. I am a remote student of Mr. Anderson. I'm here to absorb as much positivity and knowledge as I can.
Glad to have you join us!
Thanks Drew!
You're in the right place! Welcome aboard!
Thank you Nick!

Don't play Janet Jackson too loudly in your data centers
Now I know why my uptime was so bad.
The best was when I found out the high powered fan in my little 1U supermicro server was literally vibrating my sata disks to death. That was fun.
how do you even diagnose that?
We noticed two things, abnormal failure rates, but also poor performance of the disks in the RAID1. Our build logs from when we test and build each server showed the performance of the RAID as fine, but then later on once in DC / Racked performance would drop (and later disks would just fail out of the blue). Was able to reproduce performance issue simply by removing disks out of the chassis whilst still connected and re-running the performance testing and it would be fine. Then you put disks back inside case, close lid, re-test, performance would be trash. Only difference was the chassis, so we then realised that when you close the lid, the heavy duty high speed fan was vibrating the whole chassis (when lid was no). So yeah we then put disks in the chassis again, but turned fan off, and left lid off. No performance issue. Solution was to insert like a rubber layer under the drive then screw drive in. Rubber would absorb all the vibration. Good times.
Supermicro since revised the fan inside that particular model case! 😄
Damn, wonder how many got caught by this.
Yah good question - who knows!
Hello everyone! just joined the server.
<@&855078901109227608> can I get an empoyee role?

Not sure why I didn't join until now, but hi! Worked on the E-Series QA side of things for ~19 years, only recently moved over to ONTAP QA land.
Glad to have ya John! Welcome!
The cool kids must hang out here
I don't have the hair or the beard to pull of that headache inducing manoeuvre.
Fun fact: the first tattoo I ever got was the Godsmack sun logo
Should have a Discord bot that lets us save quotes for the history books !nickfunfacts random quotes.
I noticed it got quiet earlier so I decided to press ▶️
I know some of you already, but wanted to say Hi as I just joined the Discord. I worked at NetApp for ~7 years and am now at AWS working on the FSx ONTAP product.. 👋
Hey Chris! DM me on Teams and I can add your N flair
thanks guys! Mike I don't have a NetApp account yet.. still issues with federation apparently
@fast needle that beard deserves its own Discord account 😵
oh i missread. Youre at AWS now. 🙂
no worries!

I'm currently reading MetroCluster's PDF. It's amazing how marketing jargon can say so little with so much text.

PSA: No office hours today, as we're all going to be watching the Apple event. We'll be back next week!
Surely there are some apple/iphone fans here? What are you excited to see today?
I've gotten a new iphone on launch day for the past 5 years or so... you can probably guess what I'm after 😆
I'll be watching it as part of my work.
I mean they're just releasing the iP14 and Apple watch 8 probably.
Rumors for Airpods Pro 2 as well
📢 ALERT
Quick note: We're aware of an Azure problem that is preventing some users from logging into NetApp properties via Single Sign-On. You can follow that here: https://status.azure.com/en-us/status
EDIT: Systems are available again for some regions.
EDIT 2: This has been fully resolved.
Dynamic island is pretty cool on the new iPhone
If things go well in the morning, I'll get to experience it next week
Apple won’t send you a charger in a box but NetApp will send you two replacement SFPs in individual boxes 😂
New shirts have arrived! Coming soon to a video near you! 🤘
Ooooooooooooooooooooo.
where can i find the topics for the NetApp INSIGHT 2022?
Don't think the agenda is released yet, I know you can register, but that's it for now. No doubt the full schedule of topics and sessions will be released soon. 🙂
please someone help NS0-102 exam ........dumps 😪
Asking for (or sharing) exam dumps is not allowed.
If you have specific questions about the materials or how to study, that's a welcomed conversation
thank you bro.
Dumps really don't get you anywhere. Feel free to ask questions though on what Drew mentioned, there are folks in here that are involved in NetApp's test writing process.
What info/help are you looking for or struggling with on the test?
Peace y'all, I'm out.
PSA: Be sure to keep an eye on the Events module in the top of the channel list over the next few weeks. Some exciting things coming as we ramp up for NetApp INSIGHT 2022 on Nov 1st!
Thoughts with everyone in central Florida and Ft Myers area this morning! Stay safe!
Good times in the Office Hours hangout today, thanks guys!
hello
Good mornin'
can you please include timezone information in the Events channel?
It should represent your local time
Yah was just about to say, I am Singapore based and the event times all show what it will be for my time.
Hi my Name is Jacob bakhtiry from Munich Germany. I am 28 years old and i started my NetApp journey on February of this year in the s3 Academy class 12 as a PSA.
Hey Jacob - Glad to have you here in the Discord with us!
Is anyone else having issues in the support portal? A co-worker and I can't see any of our systems in the profile, and we're being told we're unauthorized for trying to download an ontap update.
greetings!
seems OK here. check your cookies?
also, which version of ontap?
I can see my systems now... 9.11.1.P2 is what seems to be current, but it also kicked me back on P1.
let me test
I walked it back to 9.10.1P7, same result. Flushing the browser.
That didn't seem to help the downloads, but I can see my system inventory now. Hmm. I want to say I was able to download an image two weeks ago. Let me reach back to management and poke the business arm of things. Sorry for the trouble.
It'd be really (really) weird that we didn't re-up on support or something. These things are central to our operations.
If you want to go ahead and log in to the support site and create a non-tech case, the support team can check into it from our side.
I appreciate the help. I got to the bottom of it on our end, unfortunately. 😦
The good news is our partner we go through is super awesome to work with, so if anything it gives us an opportunity to touch base with him and catch up. 🙂
Anyone else jumping into Overwatch 2 on launch day?
And yes, this is real game footage
(no it's not lol)
I may do, depends how well the kids sleep today. Ones got a cold and the other had 4 month immunisations. Could be a busy night
Congrats on the youngin'! Yeah, sounds like it could be busy indeed. It'll be there. Always interesting to see how a first day launch goes anyway.
If only to stress MegaPC running it on Ultra settings, yea I'll give it a go. I'm not sure I wanna pay for it, that's the only thing hodling me back
There’s part of it that’s free
oh are they doing that Season Pass stuff Immortal used?
A little different, not as intense. More like Halo Infinite, Fortnite etc, more inline with other games in the genre
More of a BF2042 player myself, so been working through that battle pass. Slowly they're improving that game update by update, but yeah def a lack luster release in comparison to previously titles.
What's BF2042, Ross?
Battlefield 2042 ?
BF5/1/4/3 here
Yah that's it! Battlefield 2042. IMO Def not as good as some previous releases like BF3/BF4, but they've made some improvements with recent patches / content releases, so its... enjoyable now.
My favs personally are BF4 and BFV.
Boarderlands for me. Along with the weirdness that is now Tiny Tina's Wonderlands.
Played all the Borderlands. Didn't enjoy the most recent one to be honest. Never heard of Tiny Tina's Wonderlands haha. 😂 Such a random game title. I have been playing a little of a game called Deep Rock Galatic. Basically it's Space dwarves, mining for things underground on random planets, and killing bugs. Quite fun if you have a squad.
It's a spin off of BL3. She's a character in a few side missions and became super popular. The Game is smialier, but it's told in the context of her running a Dungon and Dragons type campaign and you're a character. So it's a weird mix of RPG and FPS
Fine, let's see what this is all about.
You'll have been in there before I have! Tried to join the first day and was in the same "30,000 players ahead of you" queue that many others were complaining about on social media
. Haven't tried since, but I hope it's a good time!
Yup, looks like its still queueing 500-600 players.
and it wasn't moving fast. I'll try again another time.
The queue seems to jump really quickly, I’ve got in on average after 5 minutes most times
HAHAHAHA amazing
So, based on the latest email about how NetApp 💘 Cloud, in the Insight announcement, does that mean we on-prem customers, need to look for alternate vendors.

So based on the latest email about how

Hi Everyone, Matt Trudewind - Security Evangelist at NetApp all aboard here now. 😁 Here's a quick bio/introduction on me.
This is my 2nd tour here at NetApp totaling about 10 years. As a Security Evangelist I have a primary focus on ransomware prevention and recovery, cyber resiliency, and data-centric portfolio security. This includes but is not limited to Zero Trust, Data Governance and Privacy Frameworks, Security Tools, and Security Best Practices.
Prior to this I held a dual role of Product Manager and Technical Marketing Engineer for ONTAP Security driving the latest security features and capabilities into NetApp’s flagship product ONTAP
I’ve also held the position of Staff Engineer at NetApp during which I focused on ONTAP product Supportability specifically in the areas of networking and SMB/CIFS.
In between NetApp stints I worked with a NetApp partner (Eze Castle Integration) for 7 years as pre sales/post sales storage architect focusing on early 7-mode to cDOT migration.
I’ve also focused on Microsoft Windows Active Directory, Exchange, SQL and VMware during my 23 years of IT experience with 17 of those years coming in the storage industry.
Prior to NetApp and ECI, I worked a contract at Microsoft as a Technical Support Engineer.
Welcome! Drop me a message on teams and I'll add your staff role.
Welcome aboard, Matt!
We've got a special #┊・security channel down below you might want to monitor 🙂
Welcome @vital coyote Good to have another expert floating around this community Discord!
Is it possible to transfer a RAID10 array from an integrated HP RAID controller to a Dell PERC6/i without clearing the data?
Hey @floral smelt this Discord is a community channel for enthusiasts, customers and partners (and staff) of NetApp (netapp.com). So not sure you're going to get an answer to that specific question here. You could try heading over to reddit.com/r/homelab or reddit.com/r/storage and likely someone will be able to help you out.
The answer though is no, unfortunately. You'd have to transfer from one raid controller to the same one and then move the data between two raid arrays connected to discrete raid controllers on the same host.
You COULD just move the data between two different arrays, same as you would between two drives.
Even detecting RAID configurations between different family's of the same raid cards was sketchy for some brands.
Exactly, I think LSI were the only ones that had that capability 20 years ago
Either way, you're ultimately doing a data move from source to destination. No way to just plug drives into a diff raid controller and have it work.
Ah the memories of dealing with Adaptec raid cards over the years.
Just an Idea.
Couldn't you guys create an announcements tab for software? When new releases is available etc.
Hey @livid vault thanks for the suggestion. We do put announcements out on the #╭・announcements channel, and for example, for ONTAP releases, we do update in the #╰・software channel, #╰・software message - It's a manual process atm where our community team puts up the posts, so no doubt that will be something we want to expand / automate in the future.
Ontap versions is awesome. But I know I would love some automated announcement for SP/DiskFW/ShelfFW etc 🙂
Thanks for clarifying your feedback. Appreciate it. That's a great suggestion. I know the Community Management folks who look after this Discord will see this and take that suggestion onboard to see whats possible.
@livid vault - We've got a little-known changelog on NSS (login required)
https://mysupport.netapp.com/site/downloads/software-changelog
The unfortunate part is that there's no ability to subscribe to updates on the changelog. I'm sitting in a room with most of our Support Site team right now, so let me ask again to see where we're at with it 🙂
that's correct. currently we do not have a way to subscribe to the updates within the changelog. it is a requirement that we are still working on.
this is a great feedback! we do not have any changelog for firmware today. i'll have to take this back to the team and discuss possibilities.
@desert flax @fresh helm
It would be much appreciated! I know it's deeply wanted by a lot of us!
Got a lot of colleagues that would love a solution for this 🙂
@fresh helm Thanks for the link, didn't know this existed :p
Windows PowerShell SSH client not bad
Just recently that Microsoft added the client?
Hello, sorry if my question sounds inappropriate. I work at AWS, is there a way for me to have access as a partner to lab-on-demand? I don’t think AWS is on the gold partner list, isn’t it?
Ended up having to wipe the drives again, good thing I made a backup before then... ||technically NetApp since the drives were from a NetApp server that I had to sgformat to get working on other cards /jk 😆||
You might check with the LOD team specifically. The LOD page has contact info.
If there is something specific they can probably hook you up if you need it.

@edgy zinc might be able to point you to the right person
Ummm do you have a valid netapp support account? If so you should be able to view almost all the labs available.
Hey Steven, my account is super limited, cannot even download the simulator…is there anything we can do?
Hi folks, happy to be here. My name is Jeff Baxter, I'm currently Sr. Director of Product Marketing at NetApp, and you might recognize me from almost 15 years at NetApp (wow, really?). Really looking forward to being a part of Insight 2022 coming up, both in a session or two, and in one of Mr. @fast needle's crazy Discord festivities. If someone from <@&895299822712659999> feels like giving me a Staff role and/or an immediate perma-ban, please do so. Thanks!
Done! And welcome to the fun Jeff!
Hey Jeff. Welcome !
Welcome Jeff!
Umm perhaps your account rep can do something for you but I’m not part of that team no more
Now it’s a party @worldly drum is in the house
Alright, thanks Steven!
15 years! nicee! this year I've got my 10 year anniversary in my company and they forgot
😂
Happy Friday, everyone! Have a great weekend! If you've already been through the INSIGHT Events previously, look back through them again, as 5-6 new sessions have been added today! Click those RSVPs on anything you're interested in!

What is the best place to chat about AWS FXsN? And Powershell as well. I finally have FXsN working at 2 regions and syncing using snapmirrors and wrote a lot of this in Powershell to control volumes "break. delete mirror, create-mirror, resync, etc" for a true working DR setup and like to maybe share some of this and ask questions like why just about every Powershell cmdlets works but warn error 404. Was lots of work so far but it starting to pay off. 🙂 Thanks for any help pointing me to the right place as I am not clear that should be done in here or somewhere in AWS support/chat with Ontap.
Hi Mark! Hop down to #┊・hybrid-cloud for the FSx for NetApp discussions.
Powershell conversations generally happen in #┊・ontap-api.
I had a reminder that there was a "Hardware Universe Portfolio Overview" in the Hang Space on here from 11-12 EST on 10/26, but I can't seem to find it anywhere. Did I get the date/time wrong? I don't see anything listed under "Events", so I'm not even sure where I got it from initially.
You didn’t, we ended up postponing that one until INSIGHT next week. We’ll pick back up with regular updates post-INSIGHT!
Hello
Welcome!
Howdy!
<@&895299822712659999> can you give me NetApp staff access? Thanks
Hey Matt! Can you please message me on teams and I’ll sort you out? Thanks!
Sure thing Alex
Done!
Hi everyone, thought I might be missing out on some fun stuff happening here, for those of you that don’t know me I’ve been at NetApp longer than @worldly drum and am one of our tech evangelists. Nice to meet you all
Welcome!
Welcome @sleek fulcrum !
Anyone know if there's a powershell command to get the DQP datecode?
Oh you just have to start off with the flex on being here longer than me, huh? 🙂 Welcome Matt!
The champ is here!
Can't find a hands on lab to test CLI stuff. Anyone know if you can remove a VLAN if it's in a broadcast domain?

How long we talking? If you been here longer than Matusie/Mahesh Bolar you can talk. 😄
Just compared their employee ID numbers and Matt just slightly loses out on that one. 😉
Ha.
Sounds like more than e.

April 2008. Feels like just yesterday. LOL.
Yeah I'm beat.
I did say "almost 15 years" in my intro. I might have been cheating by six months.. 😉
Missed that.

What's your hire date Chris?

That's also his luggage combination...

And he loves this company!
Really? Would never have known
I'm just a youngin.
@past kayak 😉
Can’t say I’ve been on the employee train anywhere near as long but I was a customer in 98
Ditto. I was in HS in 98
❤️
98 was when I started down the path which led me to NetApp. Went to Canada as an exchange student, did a unit on Unix and C, found the CS department had their NFS shares open to the whole world. Became a LAMP developer before it was called that, then a sysadmin, then back to canada and working at a NetApp customer in 2009 😉
May 2005 was my start date but I was working with NetApp at a partner for about 4 years before that. First system I worked on was an F740 and sold a few old Smokey’s (F85’s)
Symmetrix and Clarriion were all I really saw and worked with as a contractor (mostly worked on large Exchange environments) until we started doing VMware in 2006, and got called on by some local reps for this new thing called “shared storage.” 🙂
I remember seeing them and thought they had really cool bezels, but always thought they were backup target appliances because they were mostly associated with tape backup libraries. My only exposure at that time. Here’s a throwback word… “Nearstore” with the black metal crinklecoat bezels.
Early 2000's I was almost entirely working in Solaris environments, on large-ish sendmail installations on Sun/StorageTek (1Gb FC-AL if I remember, but hazy?) Then we got our Clariions, and Celerra, and Centera, and Symmetrix, and and and. Then I went to work as a contractor and they asked my specialties and I told them Unix/EMC and they put me on a Windows/Exchange/NetApp job. I of course went in determined to get rid of this stupid "toaster" and replace it with some "real storage". Accidentally fell in love with a toaster, applied for an SE job on a whim at my local NetApp office (USPS in DC-area at the time), and ~15 years later here I am.
Now, who's ready for Insight?!? Wooooooooooooo.....
I was a Solaris/irix/hpux admin for a while in 2001. It was.. a lot coming from a pure Linux background
Sun V880's... who remembers those refrigerators? Fun fact: When we finally got the Oracle team off SPARC and onto x86/RHEL, then VMs, we pushed one of those V880's off the 3rd story parking garage, Office Space style.
i fell in love with NetApp in 2001 when i was 1st able to work on a 740 (my 1st :-D)....bunch of HP-UX and Sun systems which eventually got ported over to RedHat systems and VMware
V880's had freaking handles built into them cuz they was so dang heavy lol
i'm still on the hunt for a Fas 740 faceplate for my home office
I had one of those black crinklecoat Nearstore 720 bezels at one point in RTP
We should make a special 30th anniversary branded toaster with one of the iconic bezels
I think we took out some aggression on some mainframes, trying to remember if we dropped one from any higher than the loading dock. We did have fun unplugging some systems cord by cord and just watching the error messages scroll on the console. "Stop Dave. Will you stop Dave? Stop Dave. I'm afraid." LOL.
"No not that one!"
We had a contracter use a V880 as a sawhorse for cutting MDF on..
That decision cost them a LOT of money
We didn’t think that when you hired a datacenter refit company you had to tell them not to cut MDF inside the datacenter, nor use the servers to do it on. Neither did their insurance, but they did end up paying to detail clean the insides and outsides of every single server in there
At a different job we were running v240d and v1280s (in 2010..) and I had to keep them running without support contracts. Did lots of hardware repairs 🤣
thats wild @dry herald that insurance claim call was prob epic
Is DPQ in the context of your question "Disk Qualification Package"?
Yes 🙂

I used an old AVAYA 10/100 POE call center switch as a table in my garage for a long time before I recycled it.
Thing caused many issues with STP and loops due to call center techs learning that they could take a day off by causing a loop.
Hello guys, does it have an impact on SVM DR if we enable Aggregate Encryption? Meaning, is there more bandwith usage or more performance impact on the system, compared to no aggregate encryption?
Hi guys,
By any chance would anybody have a document on NetApp flexclone bring used for provisioning virtual desktops?
Svm-dr copies at the volume level, aggr encryption is below that, so the volume is clear when transferred by svm-Dr/snapmirror
Sorry, I’m at end of day here in Australia right now, but hopefully someone can help soon! I’m out of the loop on VDI these days.. all my googling comes up with stuff I helped write at a customer in 2009 😅
Thank for the reply Alex, appreciate the efforts!
Needed it to map a particular use case for an opportunity. 🙂
Good Morning...Steve Foster here employee 3195

Just be better than the toaster that Bungie created that looked like the Jotunn fusion rifle, and that had to be recalled for being a fire hazard: https://bungiestore.com/coming-soon-destiny-toaster
In June 2020, the Destiny Community raised more than $800,000 for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital® during Bungie’s livestream supporting Gaming Community Expo (GCX). During the livestream, Bungie announced that if we hit $777,777.77, we would look into offering an Official Destiny Toaster.

Will there be any recordings?
I wanted to catch the VMware BP session not sure if I missed it
Check the Events schedule up in the top-right to check what we've still got coming up here. Anything listed on insight.netapp.com is available on-demand from NetApp.tv
Sweet, thanks
Sorry -- our VMware Best Practices session was yesterday. There are recordings and we'll share those once they're posted.
Awesome
Yes all sessions have been recorded, save one, where we had an audio issue and it wasn't captured. But I'm already planning to reach out to that individual to have them come back during a particular large event happening later this month.
hi all
Is that "the" Norbie? As in Keith?
Hello from snowy Canada.
Hello ehy!
It was 30c in Bulgaria, I had no shorts with me
@hearty perch wow, greetings from Bulgaria also
It was really hot for November indeed 🙂
Zdrasti! I'm taking a few days to visit my family who are here getting 2nd childs passport sorted while I've been travelling between conferences.
Zdrasti! Nice. Hope you like the stay 🙂
This Discord channel is great. Thanks for all you people for the effort
I always enjoy my time here, family, food, drinks, good weather. Can't ever complain. Also we live like 5 minutes from the airport here in Plovdiv so travel is so simple
Glad you enjoy it, we have been trying hard to bring a modern community space together where the audience could get all of the different forms of information in one place
Yeah this discord is great, got strong IRC vibes when it was popular and you can meet nice community and some stars that you can talk with
Never thought that guys who I read about and are considered gurus will lend me a hand and discuss some things
A fair number of us were IRC nerds back in the day I think you’ll find 😉
Myself and a NetApp SE based in Vancouver were IRC Operators for Undernet IRC in the late 90s/early 2000s

Hello, AFF A250 can compete witch Alletra 6030 on performance? Where can I find a comparison between alletra and netapp?
Thank you
@sterile verge Hit up your ATS/SE and they can walk you through our competitive information in relation to HPE's Alletra.
they say yes but they seem to me to be two completely different machines.
I was asking discord because of the impartiality
AH makes sense! Here is how I would look at it... Alletra is just Nimble rebranded right. So take that with a grain of salt as far as what all you are looking to get from the production, the solution, and the overall landscape provided by the vendor.
shouldn't the performance equivalent of a 6030 be A400?
Also, if you look at how they are branding Alletra... I find it funny that they are marketing it as the industry leading entry storage SAN platform...
I've not seen the performance numbers from the 6030, but I would imagine that you are right in the comparisson of the A400 to the 6030. Just like the 9xxx series on their side to our A800.
Also, unless something has changed as of recent, the 6xxx series is Active / Passive compared to the A400 that is Active / Active.
I don't even see performance reports via SPC on Alletra...
my vmware environment has about 35 vms
it was estimated to need about 30000 iops with throughput 700 mega.
so it should cost even less netapp; it doesn't look like 😄
ps the 250 would have 24 tb of storage.
I don't think you even need an A400 with that in mind.
I would have to see how it was sized to be honest on our part
An A250 would run circles around that workload.
Honestly, the C190 would do what you need...
Also, don't sleep on the FAS500f. Granted it uses QLC drives, but is basically an A250 with 15TB drives available for max capacity. All in a 2U footprint and the ability to add an additional DS224C shelf for another 24 drives.
@sterile verge Two questions. One, what's the total capacity you need? Two, will this grow (number of vm's, capacity, performance needs, etc.)?
Let's take this to #┊・hardware please. My bad for not suggesting that sooner.
I replied you in hardware
700 MB/s or Mb/s?
#hardware Mike :p
In case anyone is near South Bend... I can't wait to watch this video.
Mother of God, look what I just stumbled across... THOSE DAMNED v880s!
or thos might not even be them, I think that's the stuff that was there before the v880s
Circa 2006
No, that's them, down there on the bottom. I just reorganized the cabinets after this. I think this was my first trip to the DC when I was new to the gig and was taking "before" pictures of what I was walking into.
They didn't even have a proper KVM, so that was the first order of business. Then we reorganized everything and consolidated, eliminating 4 of 8 cabinets. This was my first true task and all before I saw vMotion.
For perspective, ALL of that you see in the racks was JUST for Oracle. v880s were DB and everything else was middleware.
One of my biggest achievements was turning ALLLLL of this into 3 ESX hosts and a FAS3140.
Man, that’s some memories in a picture
Well, to be fair we had about 2 full racks of DS14 disk shelves as well
Closeup... I still have bile in my stomach for those things.
i love old gear but i get ptsd from all the long nights of effing with them
Old IBM AS/400 up top. #GreenScreen
@fast needle I actually still have the 6lb torque screwdriver for installing CPU boards into Sunfire 880s. Want it?
Yes, so I can throw it in the sea.
set it on fire first, on youtube.
I once modified one of our V1280 chassis near end of life to remove the anti gravity clutch.. it had bound up and wouldn’t let cards back in.. taped the CPU card in place with a warning so you didn’t end up having the card slam into the backplane
BlueXP well - somebody is a Windows XP Fan at Netapp? 😂 i am not a fan of blue color, i wish i couöd choose a dark theme
We just got Dark Mode in SysMgr if that means anything? 😬
@edgy zinc man, I think I have the same TShirt !
Is there a reason you prefer a different color? I get dark mode for readability in low-light and less eye strain. I can certainly ask about BlueXp plans for dark mode if that's an ask.
Without dark mode, BlueXp will be that guy that flips on the lights after a presentation.
I just use the DarkReader extension.
Hi all. My name is Mark-Allen and I am a PM in the PMO group under Brian Borgardt. One of my tasks is to learn as much about devops and help teach the other PMs. Thanks for having me.
Btw, I have never used Discord, so if I am doing anything wrong, please let me know.
Thanks.
Ping Drew or Nick if you're an employee and they'll get you added as a staff member in Teams.
Welcome!!!
@fast needle : Hello, I am an external for NetApp, working for the PMO under Brian Borgardt. I have a (at) netapp . com address, if that helps to slot me someplace.
Many thanks.
You're all set here @sterile verge! Welcome to our Discord!
The NetApp ad on the Freakanomics podcast, really odd pronunciation of NetApp. Could tell the person reading the copy had never heard of the company before reading the ad. wow
Pronounced as two very separate words?
Net_______App
I'll try to refrain from commenting any further on that 😆
NET APP
Sigh
🙂
In our office we joke about working for “the netapps”
For reasons which are lost to time but which I believe relate to what someone called us once at an event
I hear all the time "the NetApp" when they mean their filer. 😄
The NetApps. I like it. Feels like a destination.
The netapps were half of the customer calls back when I was a TSE
Ah yes, I would like to speak to The NetApps Support please.
We should add the OG Network Appliance logo as an emoji as a way to meme on stuff like that
Hells yes
Anyone know if there could be any compatible issues with Trident if you upgrade to the newest Ontap 9.11.1P3? Can't find any compatible matrix
Hey Jon you may get a better answer over at #┊・astra🔒 channel, but from my understanding any version of ONTAP that is 9.3 or higher is supported - https://docs.netapp.com/us-en/trident/trident-get-started/requirements.html#supported-backends-storage
Yeah, that's what I found as well. Thanks 🙂
Hi Team - I cannot find an answer to a simple question - “What does FSx stand for?”
Anyone know the answer?
@fresh solar could confirm, but I think it’s just a name, not an acronym
I always thought FileSystem X???
I don't think it's officially defined; we just refer to it as File System X like Mike suggested. Because there's Windows, ONTAP, Lustre, etc.
If you tell me what ONTAP stands for, I'll tell you what FSx stands for 🫠
yeah, that's the one I remember being told.. but I also remember someone asking Dave Hitz what it stood for and he just chuckled and said "It doesn't stand for anything"
I heard it was also a reference to having beer on tap.
And WAFL might stand for Write Anywhere Find Later.
Everyone knows it’s sweet snacks
Why I said might 😬
The Write Anywhere File Layout (WAFL) is a proprietary file system that supports large, high-performance RAID arrays, quick restarts without lengthy consistency checks in the event of a crash or power failure, and growing the filesystems size quickly. It was designed by NetApp for use in its storage appliances like NetApp FAS, AFF, Cloud Volume...
I know. This was a slide from my preso the other day.
It’s just a spoof on the acronym.
Like… PCMCIA. People can’t memorize computer industry acronyms.
TWAIN - technology without an interesting name
That’s a good one. Also makes me feel really old that I remember learning that as a kid.
Can we have it as a badge too for anyone who worked here when it was the logo? 🙂
How do we vet that?
Employee number?
Clearly employee ID number. 😉
Or honor system and we harass anyone who asks for it who hasn't earned it? 🙂
can i get an honorary one for working on the gear since 2001 🙂
Crazy thing about WAFL is that it functions more as a Write Anywhere Block Layout..... but who would want to use a file system called WABL ("wobble")??
I have this on a mug. That count?
official name confirmed to be File System X. 😎
Any relation to Mr. X?
I could tell you, but.. you know.
Off to the island of people who know to much. got it...
Heading home after a great week of conversations at VMware Explore EMEA in Barcelona! The buzz over here was much more than what was in San Francisco for the US event. Where can I find an honest comparison between netapp - pure - alletra ?
Everyone has their biases. We think we are pretty great 😉
The best choice comes down to what is most important to you, vs how much the options are that provide it
It’s a tough decision to make , but we feel our portfolio is flexible, sustainable and reliable, and at the right price
<@&855078901109227608> Hey, I'm an employee, (and missed the link on the pub to be a 'pub veteran :(' ) though I was over on the slack a little. How can I get bumped up to 'staff' ?
@late rover Send me a message in Teams and I’ll help ya out.
Thank you 🙂
Hey @neat niche I found it... For those of you that attended Keith's INSIGHT session here in Discord, we told the story about how Keith found me wearing a blue NetApp cap at VMworld 2010 and gave me an iPad. Little did we know I would be joining the company a few months later.
Not sure I believe that's you without the beard.
Its like baby Nick!! Wow hard to believe it was that long ago....
Hello guys, just a quick question - if in Ontap we have aggregate encryption enabled, and we also at the same time want to enable volume encryption, how is that done? Also when I define -encrypt true while creating a volume it just creates an NAE volume.
I had the docs for this the other week. Every volume on the NAE aggregate will be encrypted with the aggr-key, to use an NVE key on some vols, we create the vol with the -encryption-type switch added on like : vol create -vserver foo1 -aggr encrypt1 -vol nvevol -encrypt true -encryption-type volume
for an existing volume it's something like: cluster2::> vol move start -vol testvolen1 -vserver svm1 -encrypt-destination true -encrypt-with-aggr-key false -destination-aggregate NAEaggr1
Thanks @late rover !
nice
(and no, it's not in production.... 😉 )
If you ever need to move it, have a look at one of these to maintain uptime https://wiebetech.com/products/hotplug-field-kit/ 😉
which product(s) and/or Features?
Problem solved thanks
EPIC!
Hey!! Can anyone access the NetApp Learning Center ? seems like theres a problem
Loaded up for me. What problem are you getting?
Hello guys, quick question - on which interface does the cluster svm on ontap resolve dns requests? It doesn't appear to be on the cluster_mgmt interface.
it depends on which version of ontap to an extent
but also which routes the cluster SVM has to the DNS servers
9.10.1P8
Hmmm, how could I find that out?
@dry herald because we are trying to troubleshoot some dns issues and we can't do a tcpdump without the right interface
the outbound behaviour of ONTAP is.. not as deterministic as it should be until 9.6, so you should be in a better place..
Ok perfect, thanks! I'll have a look
night!
Looks like papa Pat on the right...
my reaction when I'm looking deep into AIQUM logs and I see references to DFM
#featurerequest - increase inodes much like a volume resize using a plus
vol modify -vserver <vserver> -volume <volume> -files +<amount>
Little something sweet I got from the Spot booth last week at re:Invent!
@neat niche Something you can address?
fPVR via the account team is probably the best route for that.
Anyone else participating in adventofcode.com 2022? Curious if we should do leaderboard for the NetApp Discord. @blazing pond
I haven't sent it through any official channels yet, was just feeling out the discord if anyone agreed. 🙂
@fast needle Datacenter dude merch store spinning up?
I need to troubleshoot my Day 7 code. Test input is successful, but actual input fails.
Start a thread here and let's talk about it?
I need to troubleshoot my Day 7 code
I've been trying to get into coding, but I don't know if I have enough time to work on it.
Welcome aboard to all the new folks! Please keep in mind that this place is open to the public, so no confidential sharing, and check out the #╭・getting-started channel for additional info! We're excited to have you all here!
If you're a member of NetApp Staff, please reach out to the <@&855078901109227608> team or Drew/myself and we will get you updated.
Hey @fresh solar I was told by @autumn crow that you need to fix your crappy El Camino.
tell him I sold it a few years ago! I lost money (it's a project car - that's a given) but honestly it was a huge relief to get rid of it..
@fresh solar you'll just buy another money pit. We all do eventually. Case in point, I'm losing thousands of dollars a year now offroading.
and, long time no see @fresh solar hope you're doing well sir!
we had a kid so I'm losing thousands of dollars the old-fashioned way!
How do we get Jay Horn in here with us?
Jay is too good busy to be here with us plebs!
Hi, is the slack channel closed? Are the Information from slack channel lost?
In August, the decision was made to move to Discord and everyone was invited to join us here. Channels were locked with an announcement on September 1. With Slack’s “new” 90-day message retention policy, all information on The Pub Slack had been aged out and was inaccessible. As such, the Slack workspace has been closed.
Someone mentioned my name?
🤐🤐🤐
@autumn crow what happened to the Corvette?!
@stiff kiln long gone my friend! My open track days are on hiatus so I've moved on to Jeeps. It's "cheaper".
Are you like Beetlejuice? Just show up randomly when people summon you, cause havoc, leave.
Hah! Something like that. I do tend to cause a lot of havoc. Not sure about the name calling though. Love the AWS flare!
Hey guys, how can you deconfigure mail hosts on ontap for asup? We can't seem to get it working via CLI
#┊・just-chatting Perhaps I am in the wrong place; But I have a serious issue with NetApp's latest turn towards REST, POWERSHELL, PYTHON and ANSIBLE. My job is to run the (ONTAP) storage in our data centers as quickly and efficiently as possible. I've been doing this for decades using BASH and the CLI. I wanted to see what all the rave was about with the new methods, but I can honestly say, I'm dumbfounded.
-I've had CLI scripts which have been running for years
-I tried PowerShell, but it appears to be more verbose and confused than COBOL; and it requires changes as the language and the modules change
-I just looked at the REST lab; what can I say. It appears worse than Assembler.
I understand AUTOMATION, but you can't automate using (spaghetti code)
Some-one help me understand; What happened to KISS?
IAC (Infrastructure as Code) is in my opinion the way to go, and is also the direction the market/IT world is moving to. Tools like Ansible enable you to do that in an efficient way. We save a lot of manpower by automating as much as possible 🙂

Need more east coast conference centres clearly
Atlantic City is a great value for conventions, over there. Not quite as polished as LV, but centrally located with lots of room.
But if you're shooting for a conference location in the US, tech companies of the world, may I suggest Wichita KS (am a bit biased, of course) https://www.visitwichita.com/meeting-planners/facilities/
I would argue we're one of the MOST centrally located 😄
Branson MO? 🤣
we could go get some rolls thrown at us.
Or the Raleigh Convention Center is kinda nice, Kevin Smith said it was just as good as Hall H at San Diego. It worked for All Things Open
I've been through the free NCSIE training. Anyone know of any other free study material or exam dumps?
I'd encourage you to edit the request for exam dumps out of your message.
Hi,
Is there a hiring freeze in NetApp ? Any idea when it will be resumed?
I haven't heard of a general one. Regionally funded jobs rely on regional sales performance, and in some circumstances unfavorable quarterly results may lead to a local hiring freeze, but again, I don't specifically know if that is occuring anywhere. We typically do a christmas to new years shutdown, which means applications tend not to move much from mid december to mid jan. There's 120 jobs listed on https://netapp.eightfold.ai/careers
Careers at NetApp
many people 😉 one of our best selling models of its time 😉 what is on your mind regarding it?
I had a feeling @fast needle was going to reorganize some of this 😊
Ha, Nick and Drew are all over it. Any feedback let us know!
We were just waiting on Forum Channels to open up for us!
Flood gates opened with the new feature, lets enjoy the ride. 😄
I hope none of you had any early morning flights today 😬
Ouchy. 😮
those damn win '95 updates lol
On on version 9.2 now. Very excited to update that sucker soon!
9.2? That's an old version of ONTAP!
Superb first OnAir stream, fellas! Congrats on the new show and it was good fun!
hello
Thanks dude!
Yeah... It needs to go. Shooting for 0 downtime
Not a great idea when we have patches every month or multiple times a month for new zero day vulnerability patches.
Why not just patch ONTAP?
Agreed. Why not keep it up to date (unless the filer is EOS and you can't download/install ONTAP versions).
EOS is May 2024 for FAS26xx.
Any of you being beat up by the weather today in the SE US ? 🌩️ 🌪️
No but if I wanted to live in Seattle I’d live there instead of the Bay Area. At this rate, the Oakland Zoo is going to have to start loading their animals two by two into a wooden boat.
I do love the Seattle area. I’ve always said that Washington is my second choice state, if I were to leave NC. It’s beautiful up there (on good days).
Good morning, everyone! We've continued to evolve and expand the structure of our Discord community here with some added channels and granularity. Please let us know if you feel like we've missed/overlooked anything. We're building this for the long-term future, but slight tweaks can always be made.
it's pretty chaotic at the moment... someone might be trying to do too much too quickly
i've stopped checking in here very often... too many places with "updates" to keep up with... automatically collapsed threads or different policies for different groups with almost the same name
There’s a new feature coming soon to discord that may help with that. There’s a channel browser and the ability to subscribe to only what you are interested in.
Appreciate that and apologize for the confusion and flipping around of channels over the last couple of weeks. It's a bit of a pendulum swing trying to balance the sweet spot of how much you make things consolidated and generic versus granular and specific. The current state is where things have landed and the framework we'd like to use long-term. You do have the ability to set granular notifications and mute channels you're not interested in keeping up with, and that's important to us, too.
YES! Many years ago I rewrote the lyrics to “Forgot about Dre” and made it “Forgot about FAS” and wanted to have GK do it with me (him as Dre, me as Shady) but we never got around to it
Here’s a sample of the note…
did you put in "DataCenterDude" or "Aquaman Server Rack"?
would pay to see this
/r/oddlyspecific
Ester’s turned out much better, but took a LOT of prompt iterations.
I also did a fun one in Chibi style for the lols, and the scary part is that looks more like me.
I need to try that bot. i've been trying to get a pic for a Ramen food blog my daughter and I are doing.
almost got the fingers right too!
Yea we had a good laugh about that
It’s always fingers and teeth, it just doesn’t understand
I had a play with remini with some old photos recently and my word it did a good job on some and on others it was totally useless. Very weird which was which
AI just thinks that we need more fingers to be more effective
@fast needle i also went down the AI rabbit hole as well. ChatGPT is pretty much correct their.
I’ve been looking at the discord integration to see if it’s something we could use here
The ONAIR info graphic looks like 🔴 NAIR as in the hair removal product. Which is probably the last thing @fast needle needs LMAO. Maybe 🔴 N-AIR is better with the dash?
Thanks for the feedback!
Been tempted to get one of those on air signs that light up and put it on my door, that way family knows not to walk in during meetings...
Okay, someone needs to give me a primer to start trying this out. I had played a bit directly with DALL-E, is that what this is?
Oh okay, Midjourney huh? Lemme see...
Hello, I have a PS script I would like to share with the community, what would be the best way to go about this?
Drop it in #1062051481966084167 if it’s something you can share in text. Discord supports markdown, so use the three backticks (```) to wrap the code.
My wednesday was quite alright but finding this made it infinitely better! That is brilliant and a music video needs to be made! 🎤 🔥
It’s been fun. We shall see if I’m back. Good luck with this Nick. ~JD
Hey, I am a NetApp staff member. Looking to get the proper roles if someone could help me with that 🙂
Hey Chris - shoot me a message on Teams
Dang, bad enough I got laid off, but demoted to "member" too.
How about an upgrade to A-Team! That was a miss, and you should've had it already.
Some big lay offs in NetApp again? In which team you were?
8% from what I heard.
Seems to be the industry standard for layoffs right now
bless the monthly and quarterly results focused markets for encouraging long term investment and strategy
How's yall's Friday going?
How'd the upgrade go though? 🙂
I have some thoughts I’ll be packing up and sending to Gebhardt 🤓
I did an update a year or two ago before I knew my rs-232 cables were too long ... My SP's kept locking up and causing the boot to go sideways on a freshly updated/rebooted node.
It would drop to the loader prompt every time and refuse to take keyboard input in any reasonable manner (1 key per 10s).
Once I figured out a workaround, the update took 12 hours with the workaround for a 10n cluster.
Unplug e0m seemed to do it for me at the time, later we got down to brass tacks with a measuring tape and realized only 4/10 rs-232 cables were under 8ft long.
Unplugged those and ordered more DIGI console servers and we were good to go.
It’s always the dumbest thing, isn’t it?
I had to go through two cases to help get root cause.
First was during the really unstable SP' firmware for the 8200's that had back to back internal switch updates.
The next was finally down to the root
I found some awesome usb-c to rj45 serial cables on AliExpress.. such a cool promising idea.. and of course they don’t work properly 🙁
A connector does not an interface make. Haha
Yeah, they went ham with 12-24 port Digi console boxes, I'm debating next refresh to get them to jump to a network based 2-4 port more industrial solution for simplicities sake.
Lantronix is my personal preference for those. We also just wired them with CAT5 and used regular RJ45 connectors with DB9s as needed. Had a few devices connected over 100’ with that setup.
Yup can confirm Latronix worked quite nicely during my DC days!
I had maybe 25 32-port terminal servers just in my part of the lab. Couldn’t get rid of the Digis fast enough
When we come up for device lifecycle I'll bump them out!
It gives off a "stealing your bank details" sort of vibe.
You see a mixed bag. More experience ONTAP folks tend to use the CLI or those using older systems, but I see newer customers, and generalist IT Admins (i.e not solely storage admins) tend to just stick with the GUI. Both are well documented.
I prefer to use CLI however my workmate wish me to use to GUI
If you only know the older version of System Manager I would give it a try. The newer version (beginning around 9.10.1) are really nice.
When we're talking ONTAP-update: Being able to directly upload the update-files from the browser is a neat feature in the GUI.
thanks
One of my workmate said using GUI to do the ONTAP upgrade is non-disruptive and said CLI is disruptive under certain situation I was wondering how is going
CLI can be used to run non-disruptive upgrades just the same as GUI. As @turbid hornet mentioned, the GUI does provide some benefits in terms of providing a direct GUI based location to upload the ONTAP update files and start the process.
If your ONTAP systems are reporting back to NetApp (i.e ASUP is enabled), then you can login to ActiveIQ Digital Advisor and generate an Upgrade Advisor plan. I believe it walks you through the whole process via CLI for a non-disruptive upgrade.
Thanks Ross
Cyclades.. is that showing my age?
Do NetApp admins/installers not use things like AirConsole? I couldn't live without mine back when doing FlexPod installs. I had a 4-port version that allowed me to connect to both controllers in an HA-pair and the cluster switches without needing to swap cables during setup. https://www.get-console.com/shop/en/22-airconsole-pro-20l
I'm using GUI only to upload image because it's awesome feature - no more PITA estabilishing IIS servers because hosting guys didnt wanted to have images on their repos
🤣
That's neat, never heard of it before
i had a 2 port one a while ago. was great for installs so you didn't have to sit/stand behind the rack.
I had something similar. I also had the multiport serial to USB adapters. It all became so much easier when they started adding USB serial ports on the devices though, just had a hub and a shed load of USB cables in my bag
my friend who does not love CLI that much when I've shown him how to update disk firmware from GUI in 9.10.1:
Then show him how to enable automatic firmware updates.
Mixed bag.
Until v4 I preferred to make new aggrs via gui.
But I almost exclusively do management from CLI I les I'm showing a coworker how to do something new
Otherwise I give them swimlanes, some tasks don't get done by either and just get shoved through Rundeck/Ansible
None of them have created anything via cli or GUI vol/share/lun wise in like the last year and a half, thankfully. The margin for error was too high
That’s always the thing about CLI - you have an easily defined and recorded set of commands for an outcome, vs “click this, check that, uncheck this, type this value here” of GUI. For small environments, GUI is fine, but for larger ones, CLI is likely more common
It’s a nodes root aggr
thanks
If I perform a giveback with option -only-cfo-aggregates true, only root aggregates is given back, right?
Yep.
thanks Mike
What is POST mean in Netapp?
Without much info from you, I am guessing it's referring to a POST call to the ONTAP API. Just a guess though 🙂
It is about POST is done on boot? I am not sure what is it stands for
Sometimes people use the term POST when speaking about nodes booting up, i.e have they posted.
Yup it can be used in that context as well.
thanks
It comes from the term Power On Self Test (POST), to describe the sequence that a computer system goes through after it is turned on but before it loads an operating system.
Well done, totally could not remember what it stood for 😄 but yes good point it's basically booted the BIOS but not the OS.
thanks a lot
Do you know whats is GX_PRIMARY_KERNEL_URL?
Is it used to point to the correct version of ONTAP?
if I run setenv GX_PRIMARY_KERNEL_URL in loader prompt
Hey can you try posting in the #1062049169520476220 section this question?
i had fix the issue, thanks
Hwu should tell you, additionally #1062049169520476220 !
Hey I haven't been on this server for a hot minute. Has anyone else been getting DMs from a senior member of this server soliciting feedback on their contents, plural?
I'm sure it's all on the up and up, just an unexpected contact.
Yes, I was duped by a spammer
They've been banned, and apologies for any confusion this may have caused.
they pinged me as well
I suppose this means I've made it to the big time now?
SONOFA, glad I didn't interact too much. they got as far as my first name and the state where I live
Do we ask general non-Netapp hardware questions here?
We’ve got a whole category called DISCUSSION above with various chat channels in there, depending on what your topic is. This is more of a water cooler hangout community section.
As the FY24 partner program policy has changed, I have to get additional certificates, but I'm worried.
Which exams are being required?
I thought both of those were in there for awhile? I had to take both of those as a partner a while back. Did the number of people required to have them go up?
Anyone else having issues logging into mysupport?
Just saw this -- the team is looking into that
Three weeks ago I got some more: Hybrid Cloud Admin (because cloud everywhere) and one of the FlexPod ones. I'm more worried for next year when the whole bunch of those NCIE, NCSIE, etc expires. 🙈
Also I'm still missing that damned NAHSE cert. Bah, I hate that one 😤
I don't know the details yet. I think you need to get a license for at least one track in order to maintain a changed partner rating.
me 2
(I'm a ontap newbie) From the k8s side, I've seen a number of times ONTAP SVM's being misconfigured / and hosts in a trident scenario. We either used NFSv3 or NFSv4.
In some cases there were various Auth settings in the SVM enabled that blocked file access (they were not propertly configured and should have not been set).
In some cases there were root and uid squashing settings done. The challenge has always been trying to coordinate a Storage Admin and k8s team and sometimes some linux team doing everything correct. And in many cases the Storage ONTAP admin is a very busy person 🙂
Any toughts ?
Hey @sterile verge we have a dedicated question section for Astra over at #1063542596221284523 - suggest dropping your question there for the Astra folks to jump on! Hope this helps.
Hello all
somebody gave me an Netapp NAJ-1001 and wants me to remove all data. this is the first time im touching an NETAPP so i dont know what to do with it? is it a serial console CLI device? is it an webui device ? do i need software ?
Got a picture?
I honestly don't recognize it.
Oh nevermind Google...
https://www.ebay.com/itm/401563709466 NetApp DS2246 NAJ-1001 Array 24x 900GB 10K X423A-R5 2x IOM6 Controllers + 2x PSU
It's a disk shelf only. It won't have any data.
That's a JBOD.
i mean.. it MIGHT have data on it. but can't really wipe it without connecting it to something.
how to connect it?
it has 2 sas connections, 4 sfp connections 5 rj45 connections
cant find any info on it
can you post a pic of the rear?
even a usb
that makes it sound like it's a controller. like a 2552
little different than what was in the ebay link. same chassis though.
yup
via the boot menu you can do a wipeconfig / re-initialize all the disks.
can you do a post in either #1062049107096633454 or #1062049169520476220 and we can continue this out of the chatting channel.
how do i access the boot menu ? CLI ?
from the state it's in. serial console would probably the simplest.
i can do that 🙂
on a side note. the lighting and composure of that photo is amazing.
lol.. samsung phone and fenix flashlight 😄
i dont understand why i cant find documentation on what the connections do.. the icons SEEM to say that the 4 sfp's could do fiberchannel and ethernet
start that post in #1062049169520476220 and lets take this there.
found https://library.netapp.com/ecm/ecm_download_file/ECMP1609081 and it explains the connections.. tomorrow is a new day 🙂
Oh good point.
smartphone cameras have gotten much better.
Aw man. This seemed like a home run a year ago. Wonder if they couldn’t make it work?: https://www.crn.com/news/cloud/netapp-shuts-down-its-spot-pc-vdi-business
Yeah, bit interesting. As the summary says, uses some existing NetApp technologies and assets. Can’t speculate on the reasons though 🤷🏻♂️
Today installing a new Metrocluster for a customer I found this :
Up and running without any error !
What's its uptime? I retired one of those a few years back that had been forgotten about and it had over 4000 days uptime. Running DOT6 IIRC
Over 4000 too ! I will check that and I’m back with the exact uptime
That's the box that became the DS14Mk2 shelf eventually!
Did we start with it as the controller? Interesting!
na those started as DS14's then a controller head was added iirc
Did a few swap outs of controller modules back in to shelves in my day
I had a fas250 running 20ish flexclones of a 2tb DB2 db way back in the day.
Did an Ontap update and a port died (ESH/at-fcx? I can't remember).
Support shipped me a new one. Something was wrong and it wouldn't fit?
My VAR at the time had a guy with a spare FAS270 in his garage, he drove me the part, was there first thing in the morning, got licenses moved and we were ready to roll.
We eventually swapped out the head and connected it to a 3140 and did an aggr import, kept the 20-30 clones.
3140s with DS14s were the business in the late 2000s. Those rigs for what they were, were beastly and could take a whoopin.
production VMware, Exchange, and Oracle with 10GbE NFS and iSCSI, and it ran circles around the old Sun and HP hardware we replaced
I had two 3140's that the only short comings to them were the SATA shelves we had running exchange of all things.
Throw the FlashCache cards in those suckers, put VMWare on NFS over 10GbE, deduplicate the heck out of everything and have 7s bootup time on ESXi v5 (I think it was 5...)
My vmware guys thought I was nuts for wanting VMWare on NFS then, until I showed them the benefits of deduplication and those cards. We couldn't migrate quick enough.
Yeah my first exposure to NetApp was FAS3170s running nfs for Vmware
6280s still running in the house here beside my commodity nas, kinda silly..doubles as a heater in winter months ofc 😆
wish i could do select as i have the hardware for it but the landing page for a trial for it is broken for me
Mine was a mix enviroment, but the most fun one was a 6290 running 8.1 cdot.
You guys are all newbies. 🤣 My first filer was a 1400, which was a deskside with non-swappable 1G drives. The F220 with warm-swappable drives was a huge upgrades. The F540 with the chrome bezel was the best looking filer ever.
i was still in HS when that was relased
"My first filer was a 1400". had to look that one up. I was just starting HS / Leaving Middleschool
There was one at the university department I worked at around 1998, but I couldn’t tell you what model. Then I purchased one at a company I worked at in around 2000-2001, again not sure on the model. After that another company I worked at ordered one of the first 3020c’s in the UK, that and an R series nearstore.
Message me the uni and maybe we can find sales records 🤣
It was one of the Cambridge Uni departments, I’m pretty sure that’s why the biotech startup I went to after that purchased one, all the scientists had used one before.
We had a ton of Silicon Graphics workstations as well, those things had VR long before it was cool
I admined a lab of indys and a handful of O2s 2001-2004. I didn’t love irix, but man they seemed like they could do some cool stuff for the time 🙂
I had two old Indys 2005-2009, but they didn’t get much use. Ran Linux on one of them and irix on the other. Also the monitors were magnificent Sony gdm17e11 based ones #chefskiss
I was eyeball deep in Y2K updates and AD/Exchange migrations. You guys were all way ahead of me on storage. The closest I ever came were the Symmetrix's that Exchange was running on.
one of my first computers was an SGI Octane that i bought off Ebay in like 1999 or 2000ish. Then I got an HP 9000 with HP UX 11i 1.0
Man I am old. And I was just doing inbound Tech Support for HP LaserJet
I also have an old HP Workstation with HPUX 11i v1.6 with an Itanium processor in storage somewhere.
HP 4100DTN is best printer ever.
I wondered why that sounded so familiar then I googled it and realised my first Desktop Support job we had 20 - 30 of those suckers dotted across the campus I worked at. Ah memories.
My home school district was loaded to the gils with these, they were pretty bullet proof.
I adminned i think 12? Yeah, loved them
Hi What do you think are the disadvantages of a single controller?
Disadvantages will depend on the workload running on it.
Redundancy obviously is the main disadvantage. If any component within the controller fails, you will be impacted. Same goes for software upgrades of ONTAP, that would be disruptive as no second node to failover too. Additionally your performance is limited as you only have 1 node to handle all the I/O rather than splitting the workload across a HA pair of nodes.
🙂
hi
how do you guys study NS0-593?
NetApp Certified Support Engineer – ONTAP Specialist
WAY back when I was running a datacenter, we had a SnapVault secondary that was a single controller. It was the third tier in a cascade that was Production > SnapMirror + SV Primary > SV Secondary. If it went offline temporarily, it wasn't a huge deal.
when stuff was called "nearstore" ?
A lot of that one is expierence + ONTAP troubleshooting knowlege and knowledge of NetApp Support tools. e.g. WAFLiron.
If you're a customer you might not have access to some of the material though.
thanks, mike
yeah.. WAFLiron and latX saved my bacon several times when i was still member of the club. Now as a customer theyre all but a faint memory...
Hi
I took NS0-194 on 17 Mar 2023 and NS0-093 28 Mar 2023. I passed the exam however there is no email send to me
I believe you should have access to the NetApp Learning Center? If so, I believe there is a place there to submit a ticket for help. Possibly that could be a good place to start.
thanks
You can also email ncp@netapp.com
Absolutely insane severe weather day today here in the US. I hope all of you in the areas of concern are safe.
As of an hour ago, there has been 130 Tornado Warnings so far today.
130! What? Wowser.
ORD last night had a tornado watch and everyone in T1 went into the tunnel between B and C terminals. Was nuts.
Buddy of mine sent me this last night just after he landed there.
that's absolutely the way we pronounced it in the late 80s and well before todays gifs we called animated gifs when they were new.
hi
I cannot login my netapp vue account
i click the forgot password button but no email was sent to me
what should i do?
@split wigeon Email ncp@netapp.com and they should be able to help you. I know there was some changes going on around 11th April 2023 to do with Pearson Vue and CertCenter.
I sent an email last friday but no one replied
Please have some patience it's not a 24x7 monitored email account and it's primarily monitored by our US team whom are out of the office due to the weekend.
If you don't hear back in the next 48 hours, update us here and we will see what we can do.
Is https://devnet.netapp.com/ broken for anyone else? I get a 403.
Its working for me
Hmm, doesn't seem to like my corporate VPN...
