Are there any other recommended resources / training material to review before taking the certified data admin exam? (Already went over the cluster / data prot. fundamentals listed)

mild hazel
#

NS0-162?

gleaming orchid
#

Yeah

mild hazel
#

6+ months of day to day admin helps with that cert.

#

it's not written to any specific doc or class either.

#

basic hybrid cloud knowledge is helpful as well.

#

I did a blog a few years back as to how we write the exams - some folks find it helpful to understand how the tests are actually written before they take it.

I have a little over a year on an A250, but with exams I always overthink the material. Like if they decide to ask, if it's a tuesday and you have 3 AFF A900s, what is the color of the SSD's PCB?

mild hazel
#

lol. :). we don't have questions like that.

fresh helm
#

Purple, because aliens don't wear hats.

mild hazel
#

The questions on the offical practice test are actually from the test writing sessions. they're not just made up as examples.

gleaming orchid
#

Yeah, with the learning center stuff the questions are clear. I am used to ISC tier "everything is technically correct but only one thing is 'isc correct'" OmegaLUL Thank you!

That's been talked about several times. and a few A-Teamers push it when we have writing sessions/meetings with NLS.

I kindof liked the events more before customers were invited. The presenters wasnt always the most ... energetic personalities, but comments like "good question. I remember thinking when I wrote the code....." were epic! 😛

hearty perch
#

I think there is probably room for different types of events for different audiences. Mind you I don’t work in that department so don’t quote me on anything. But I think the world has changed significantly the last few years, maybe smaller more frequent and more geographically dispersed events are a good thing. Less global travel, more local resources getting to participate, less expenses for attendees. Add to that everything that can be done with Hybrid events like Q&A/Panels etc here in discord and I think the future could be a bright one

Is there a procedure for "joining" customer accounts?
We have a few customers that have changed names, and so new equipment are registered to the new name, and old systems on the old account. Also the customers user accounts are registered to the old name, so they are unable to see new systems on NOW.
I'm afraid I'll mess up entitlements if I start opening cases to reassign systems.
-I'm working for a NetApp partner/reseller

fresh helm
#

Open a "non-technical" case. If you'll sign-in to the support site first, you'll see a lot more category options available. There are two or three that fit what you're describing, so pick the best-fit.
https://mysupport.netapp.com/site/help

runic thorn
#

I've done that in the past, but had to open cases for each individual system. Might be ~30 systems in total.
Maybe I'll wait til the lady that does our renewals are back from vacation.

fresh helm

I don't want you to have to open 30 cases either! It might be quicker to wait.

Also, we need to move the customers user accounts at the same time. Their email is still the same, but should connect to another company name

I'd suggest heading over to https://www.netapp.com/partners/#become , regardless of what partner program you want to be apart of you will be asked to fill in this form - https://netapp.tap.thinksmart.com/prod/Portal/ShowWorkFlow/AnonymousEmbed/26c8b2c2-68d6-4b30-b522-a81075a97c56

#

I don't understand how Discord is a better fit for this than Slack. This is just requiring that I have a separate app up, in addition to the one that I'm likely to already use for work. It probably just means I'll never be here

runic thorn
#

I mostly just use the web client for Discord

autumn belfry
#

sure. whichever. it's still effectively a separate thing.

hearty perch
#

Slack have been making a lot of changes as they struggle to become sustainable as a business, one of those most recent changes would mean that there would be no history over 90 days available in the slack we used. That isn't a limitation here.

#

We also have a lot more interactive features in this platform, the ability to do stage channels, host watch parties, do panel sessions, have live Q&A sessions on launches.

#

More and more open communities are having to abandon slack because it is becoming a difficult to use platform for those not willing to pay for it as an enterprise tool.

autumn belfry
#

NetApp low on cash, then?

#

but okay. Just means I won't be here unless I have a specific question. (I'm sure you're all crying at the loss.)

fast needle
#

It’s not about cash and it’s not about numbers. It’s about bringing two similar communities together in the same place that has a future. There are things that Discord does that Slack doesn’t. And rather than make multiple investments and split-brain things, we opted to bring the ~100 actually active users from Slack over here. I’m sorry if it’s a disappointment, but we’ve got some bigger exciting plans for The Pub and wanted to integrate. I think if you give it a chance, you’ll find similar kinds of people helping people conversations happening over here.

hearty perch
#

It's also about how communities change with time, I've been around long enough that I remember being on BBS, IRC, then vBulletin/PHPbb, plus a whole myriad of things in between then and now. Discord is where people are already gathering, the coding group I am in has 110K users with 20K active at any one time. Similar story for the SRE/DevOps groups I am a part of. A lot of the modern tech stack folks have already settled here and that is a good barometer for where things are headed.

edgy zinc
#

BBS rocked back in the day

fast needle
#

vBulletin… that is a name I have not heard for an age.

delicate ledge
#

There's some cobwebs on them brain cells.

hearty perch
#

I think I still have a couple of active vBB sites out there

hearty perch
#

I get that change is always uncomfortable, but sometimes its necessary

runic thorn
#

I remember converting to aggregates and FlexVols was taxing as well...

hearty perch
#

I think, and this is only my opinion, the driving force of Discord in tech has been that people in the technology space are often associated with adjacent communities already, so gaming, live streaming, content creation, programming, home automation, open source projects, block chain (the list is endless), most of those communities are already here and have been here since the platform started. So since I was already here for my gaming guilds and my consumer tech interests, it just became easier to find more communities here that fit the goals I had. The user model here is much easier for me personally, its one account, its tied to me and I can join whatever communities I want, I don't have to sign up each time, I don't have to remember oh which email was I invited to that Slack group again now. With the recent per server user profiles I can also keep things pretty well organised across what I do for my work and what I do for my hobbies.

autumn belfry
#

I don't give a damn about "change". I give a damn about the fact that, since I have Slack open all the time for work communication, using Slack to interact with NetApp is virtually zero friction. Now I have to open up an additional app, and an app that is likely to be viewed as a gaming app at that. ("Hey, wfaulk, what's this you have open that says 'Playing Counter-Strike', 'Playing Borderlands', 'Playing Genshin Impact', 'Playing Hearthstone', 'Playing League of Legends', 'Playing World of Warcraft', and 'Playing Overwatch' on it?")

#

But you made your decision (just like NetApp support made their decision to require that I interact with email in order to log into the support site) and there's certainly nothing I can do to change your mind. I just think it's a dumb choice and that you should know that.

fast needle
#

Is there anything I can do to change yours?

#

Is there an opportunity for that?

hearty perch
dry herald
#

Optane was cool for niches, Intel spent so much that they have to try to sell it to masses and that made no sense

hearty perch
#

I think they missed the mark not continuing it and pivoting it in the HEDT market

#

Gamers would have benefited, content creators editing large video files etc.

#

Even software builds benefit from it as far as the testing I had done in the past.

dry herald
#

Gamers have 1500-5000Mb/sec nvme ssds and 32-64GB RAM.

#

Adding a new component type that displaces storage probably doesn’t excite much

hearty perch
#

It’s more about adjacency, which is why Nvidia and others are working on things like Direct Storage Access for GPUs. The benefits of Optane for end users were around one less hop in the chain to get data to the right place. CXL and the Direct Storage APIs will resolve a lot of that going forward though

I have! Pretty amazing stuff in that vintage hobbyist market.

#

No big deal if my SE mobo isn't repairable.

#

(I have an SE/30 that is ok, last I knew...)

dry herald
#

@twin flint I’m in Perth Western Australia and I spent a while looking for an SE/30.. location is important since shipping is a great way to end up with a broken tube and there’s no other cities nearby. In a one year period, one came on sale here and it was about USD$800

#

I passed on that and kept looking.. then I had a friend randomly reach out and ask if I wanted one that a friend of theirs was looking to give away, and I got one for nothing! And a few months earlier I’d ended up with a bunch of ADB keyboards, including two which were the right ones for it- I gave one to a guy starting a Mac museum on the other side of Australia, so now I have my white whale of old Macs 😉

#

On my birthday last year I was working and out at a University I deal with for NetApp and had a friend who works there message me and ask if I’d like a Mac classic new-in-box that he’d found.. I think he was a bit surprised how quickly I showed up, since he didn’t know I was on campus at the time. Unfortunately the analog board was totally dead.. I’ve recapped it, but still no good. That’ll be a project for another day I suspect.

ooh nice! when I worked at that uni, I was involved with the computer club - they had/have a nextstation. And two BeBoxes

I have one of them at my house right now, I've been trying to coax it back to life - it apparently died in about 1999.. I've got it back to showing a boot logo at least - I need to get back to making a bootable hard drive

#

I got a dump of the right one for it apparently (it's a pre-prod prototype, so the versions of BeOS that run on the production ones won't boot on it), but couldn't get it to boot.. a friend tried it and found he needed to do byte order swapping for dd.

Now I know why my uptime was so bad.

The best was when I found out the high powered fan in my little 1U supermicro server was literally vibrating my sata disks to death. That was fun.

karmic ermine
#

how do you even diagnose that?

quartz veldt
# karmic ermine how do you even diagnose that?

We noticed two things, abnormal failure rates, but also poor performance of the disks in the RAID1. Our build logs from when we test and build each server showed the performance of the RAID as fine, but then later on once in DC / Racked performance would drop (and later disks would just fail out of the blue). Was able to reproduce performance issue simply by removing disks out of the chassis whilst still connected and re-running the performance testing and it would be fine. Then you put disks back inside case, close lid, re-test, performance would be trash. Only difference was the chassis, so we then realised that when you close the lid, the heavy duty high speed fan was vibrating the whole chassis (when lid was no). So yeah we then put disks in the chassis again, but turned fan off, and left lid off. No performance issue. Solution was to insert like a rubber layer under the drive then screw drive in. Rubber would absorb all the vibration. Good times.

#

Supermicro since revised the fan inside that particular model case! 😄

Hi Everyone, Matt Trudewind - Security Evangelist at NetApp all aboard here now. 😁 Here's a quick bio/introduction on me.

#

This is my 2nd tour here at NetApp totaling about 10 years. As a Security Evangelist I have a primary focus on ransomware prevention and recovery, cyber resiliency, and data-centric portfolio security. This includes but is not limited to Zero Trust, Data Governance and Privacy Frameworks, Security Tools, and Security Best Practices.

Prior to this I held a dual role of Product Manager and Technical Marketing Engineer for ONTAP Security driving the latest security features and capabilities into NetApp’s flagship product ONTAP

I’ve also held the position of Staff Engineer at NetApp during which I focused on ONTAP product Supportability specifically in the areas of networking and SMB/CIFS.

In between NetApp stints I worked with a NetApp partner (Eze Castle Integration) for 7 years as pre sales/post sales storage architect focusing on early 7-mode to cDOT migration.

I’ve also focused on Microsoft Windows Active Directory, Exchange, SQL and VMware during my 23 years of IT experience with 17 of those years coming in the storage industry.

Prior to NetApp and ECI, I worked a contract at Microsoft as a Technical Support Engineer.

Is it possible to transfer a RAID10 array from an integrated HP RAID controller to a Dell PERC6/i without clearing the data?

quartz veldt
fast needle
#

The answer though is no, unfortunately. You'd have to transfer from one raid controller to the same one and then move the data between two raid arrays connected to discrete raid controllers on the same host.

#

You COULD just move the data between two different arrays, same as you would between two drives.

quartz veldt
#

Even detecting RAID configurations between different family's of the same raid cards was sketchy for some brands.

fast needle
#

Exactly, I think LSI were the only ones that had that capability 20 years ago

#

Either way, you're ultimately doing a data move from source to destination. No way to just plug drives into a diff raid controller and have it work.

#

Ah the memories of dealing with Adaptec raid cards over the years.

I finally have FXsN working at 2 regions and syncing using snapmirrors and wrote a lot of this in Powershell to control volumes "break. delete mirror, create-mirror, resync, etc" for a true working DR setup and like to maybe share some of this and ask questions like why just about every Powershell cmdlets works but warn error 404. Then we got our Clariions, and Celerra, and Centera, and Symmetrix, and and and. Then I went to work as a contractor and they asked my specialties and I told them Unix/EMC and they put me on a Windows/Exchange/NetApp job. I of course went in determined to get rid of this stupid "toaster" and replace it with some "real storage". Accidentally fell in love with a toaster, applied for an SE job on a whim at my local NetApp office (USPS in DC-area at the time), and ~15 years later here I am.

late rover
#

I had the docs for this the other week. Every volume on the NAE aggregate will be encrypted with the aggr-key, to use an NVE key on some vols, we create the vol with the -encryption-type switch added on like : vol create -vserver foo1 -aggr encrypt1 -vol nvevol -encrypt true -encryption-type volume

late rover
#

for an existing volume it's something like: cluster2::> vol move start -vol testvolen1 -vserver svm1 -encrypt-destination true -encrypt-with-aggr-key false -destination-aggregate NAEaggr1

I wanted to see what all the rave was about with the new methods, but I can honestly say, I'm dumbfounded.

-I tried PowerShell, but it appears to be more verbose and confused than COBOL; and it requires changes as the language and the modules change

Atlantic City is a great value for conventions, over there. Not quite as polished as LV, but centrally located with lots of room.

But if you're shooting for a conference location in the US, tech companies of the world, may I suggest Wichita KS (am a bit biased, of course) https://www.visitwichita.com/meeting-planners/facilities/

With more than 8,000 hotel rooms and over 200,000 square feet of exhibition space in our convention center, Wichita offers everything you need to plan smart - at Midwestern prices. With off-site venues like the architecturally stunning Exploration Place, you'll make your event a big-time success.

# bold prairie Hi, Is there a hiring freeze in NetApp ? Any idea when it will be resumed?

I haven't heard of a general one. Regionally funded jobs rely on regional sales performance, and in some circumstances unfavorable quarterly results may lead to a local hiring freeze, but again, I don't specifically know if that is occuring anywhere. We typically do a christmas to new years shutdown, which means applications tend not to move much from mid december to mid jan. There's 120 jobs listed on https://netapp.eightfold.ai/careers

Appreciate that and apologize for the confusion and flipping around of channels over the last couple of weeks. It's a bit of a pendulum swing trying to balance the sweet spot of how much you make things consolidated and generic versus granular and specific. The current state is where things have landed and the framework we'd like to use long-term. You do have the ability to set granular notifications and mute channels you're not interested in keeping up with, and that's important to us, too.

I did an update a year or two ago before I knew my rs-232 cables were too long ... My SP's kept locking up and causing the boot to go sideways on a freshly updated/rebooted node.
It would drop to the loader prompt every time and refuse to take keyboard input in any reasonable manner (1 key per 10s).

Once I figured out a workaround, the update took 12 hours with the workaround for a 10n cluster.

#

Unplug e0m seemed to do it for me at the time, later we got down to brass tacks with a measuring tape and realized only 4/10 rs-232 cables were under 8ft long.
Unplugged those and ordered more DIGI console servers and we were good to go.

quartz veldt

CLI can be used to run non-disruptive upgrades just the same as GUI. As @turbid hornet mentioned, the GUI does provide some benefits in terms of providing a direct GUI based location to upload the ONTAP update files and start the process.

If your ONTAP systems are reporting back to NetApp (i.e ASUP is enabled), then you can login to ActiveIQ Digital Advisor and generate an Upgrade Advisor plan. I believe it walks you through the whole process via CLI for a non-disruptive upgrade.

In some cases there were various Auth settings in the SVM enabled that blocked file access (they were not propertly configured and should have not been set).
In some cases there were root and uid squashing settings done. The challenge has always been trying to coordinate a Storage Admin and k8s team and sometimes some linux team doing everything correct. And in many cases the Storage ONTAP admin is a very busy person 🙂

Hi What do you think are the disadvantages of a single controller?

quartz veldt
#

Disadvantages will depend on the workload running on it.

#

Redundancy obviously is the main disadvantage. If any component within the controller fails, you will be impacted. Same goes for software upgrades of ONTAP, that would be disruptive as no second node to failover too. Additionally your performance is limited as you only have 1 node to handle all the I/O rather than splitting the workload across a HA pair of nodes.
