@stiff sonnet you should add a decimate modifier to all the sticks especially the one the bird is standing on, tune the slider until it makes the branch look like it fits better

I tried a lot different settings and it seems getting better result using VRay is difficult.
If I decrease scattering it creates abrupt transition between lit and shadowed part ruining the impression of skin, to make it look better would probably require editing the render in Photoshop.

I usually just scribble things out to get an idea of the drawing. This up there was a few stages:
- The idea: two blobs flying around each other
- Scribble of the environment around
- Lineart x.x
- Base colours
- Shading and glowing effects
- Like 5 Million Layers for colouradjustment
- Cry in the corner for a bit to release tension
- Even more colour adjustment
I used a lot of references (like 15), and finally getting the colours right waa a true pain... I ended up with a Layer called 'Layer 143' but like half of them were sketchlayers....
It's just a long process for me to get to the finished thing x.x

Sneaky tip about the squiggly base colour under the lineart:
Copy the lineart onto a new layer
Change that lineart colour with a filter to the base colour (can't remmeber what the filter os called x.x)
And merge the lineart with your base
You now have a steady blob of paint and the lineart of your choosing!

There are many freeware programs :)
I've tried so far:
Firealpaca: easy to use, not overloaded with brushes and doesn't need that much resources => great for older machines
Medibang and Krita: many pretty brushes and things to play around, but a more difficult layout that needs to be learned first
Gimp: Is great for photoshopping, also has a lot of useful brushes, but the selection tools always confused me (can't tell how it's now, there was a huuuge update)
Autodesk sketchbook: amazing brushes, needs a big screen because the toolbars can't be scaled into smaller sizes (so the tools hide the canvas), it always got angry at me for wanting to change the shortcuts somehow
These are the programs I've used so far
For Vectorart I'd suggest Inkscape, because it's the only program ai know for that thing

Well I don’t know what program you are using. I would recommend using a basic round brush and set density all the way up and make it small for lineart
