There’s not what I’d really call a “beginning” place for magnetite, unless you’ve played the game before and know where places are.
Once you’ve gotten into the game a fair bit, you’re best place you’ll grab some is when you end up going to the deep lilypad place (I call it the cotton anemones place)

Depends which biome you choose to get them in. If you're going to get them from inside the Ventgarden Leviathans then you can go to the Tree Spires biome which is 70 - 460 meters deep. If you choose to go to the Deep Purple Vents to get them then you're looking at 160m - 480m deep. I recommend the Deep Purple Vents though because it's not too far away from the middle of the map.

4-5 nut plants will get the job done in the early game. Eventually you get something that changes the game, however, and lets you cultivate a food item that is off the charts nutritious and hydrating and that has an infinite shelf life.

That is one definite downside of that thing. Prawn, you can still enter from wherever. Even the old seamoth from the first game. The Seatruck only lets you enter from two spots, IF you have a module attached, one otherwise.
