It has some stuff I like but you are correct that it doesn’t have enough. Almost every unique voice line is just a reference to previous games. No funny lines about limitless power or being a 3 man vehicle or take food and drinks along for the ride. The tadpole doesn’t even HAVE a voice line when you make it

You have alan in your ear pretty much all the time and then there are marguerite and another person in the satellite kinda looking over you so I didn't feel the desperation as I did in first game
As for the second one it's too early too call it, I played the whole story available rn and it's more interesting that subz but it could be recency bias

That’s very interesting to me. I agree that below zero is more investigating but to call it less interesting than 2 would be wild considering we are CALLED qualified investigator in it. Stand next to the beacon at the delta island and turn until you are facing east, then get in a sub and drive it 1000 meters in that direction until you see 2 or 3 large icebergs. Then you get out of your sub and explore them. The greenhouse is on the top of one. Remember to keep space in your inventory to bring some plants home because you will need some of them later

But squidsharks are classified as Leviathans. The classification Leviathan is just the creatures size

I would not call Below Zero trash, I honestly think it meaningfully expands on a lot of elements and is, in some aspects, better than the first game. It is, however, very different in terms of tone. If you liked the isolation and introspection of the first game, you probably won't like this game, because the protagonist talks, and the protagonist talks A LOT

It was a little jarring at times because I would be experiencing a moment and the main character would start talking and what I was being told I should be feeling was completely different from what I was actually feeling and it can be immersion-breaking at times, but I like some of the unique dynamics that you get from that aspect of the game so it's not like it's all negative even if that's my one issue with Below Zero

I liked the differences in the games they aren't all the same. As you mentioned, there were the heroine's monologues and conversations with the protagonists, and they also showed that they're making graphical progress. In my opinion, the biomes and caves were beautiful, and the music was even better. In my opinion, the game is just as good as Subnautica, or maybe a little worse.

Everything feels more condensed so even if the map is smaller, there is a lot more content packed into those tighter locations

The cramped biomes is compensated for by some changes they made like encouraging free swimming much more than in the first game with things like oxygen plants and the Cyclops and Seamoth fused into one as the Sea Truck so you can customise it to fit into smaller spaces if you need to and make it big for when you want it to be

I personally like the Sea Truck more than the Cyclops. I always found the Cyclops controls to be abysmal. I only ever used that thing to move resources down to build a base at the cove tree and then used that as a station to swap between the Seamoth and the Prawn suit and I would literally never use my Cyclops again after that

Honestly I think a big factor in my enjoying Below Zero a lot is that I don't get that fear of the ocean or fear of isolation thing at all so to me these games are just chill exploration games where I build a house and hang out with cool fish and Below Zero was just more of that and I don't care if it's "less scary" or what it is about it that made it not be as scary because that wasn't a factor in my enjoyment of Subnautica in the first place

The issue I think people have with Below Zero isn't "the game is bad", but the game has a different tone than they expected and because it's not the game they had in their head, they don't like it.

-exploit nerfs to fun stuff (scanner room, battery crafting)
-slower default movement speed alongside other nerfs to stuff (no medkit generator, coffee isn't infinite water, etc.)
-camera locking cutscenes outside the start and end
-weird retcons (in my humble opinion)

Personally it's a decent game but not what I expect of Subnautica. Alone removing narration and giving back the faster speed and exploits (I just love some of them too much, sorry) would make the game much better, which goes to show that its issues are moreso personal preference than anything. It has great potential for a fun time, if you're the person that likes more narrative driven games.

tbh the story feels not linear at all, if you liked the progression and playstle of 1&2 you will not like BZ.

BZ is not immersive at all, the story is everywhere, and the progression is VERY confusing.

I think its an amazing game, the creature and enviroment design is the best they've done ever, easily. But the first game has smoother gameplay and story I think. Wasn't a lapse in ability with below zero, poor thing was just a victim of circumstance.
