The best energy/slot ratio is root pustules, but they cannot be farmed at your base. I think many players grow fevered peppers next to the reactor, and they are at least above average. Breeding fish like arctic peepers in alien containment would also provide quite efficient biofuel

Don't be afraid to print the map and pencil in the rough locations of things you find. That's what I did in my first playthough so I could track objectives and where I put bases. I always do "vegan runs" for some reason (survival mode without eating any fish or using them for water), so I needed convenient bases with food growing in them to stay alive.

if you do restore the save folder, wipe it first. That works. Mixing old and new files can have this effect
