I think one thing that Subnautica did well was that there was always something that made your defenses useless or less effective , and perimeter defense was limited to the Seamoth which can only go so deep

Like even if you had perimeter defense, warpers can still just take you out of your vehicle and attack you

Or like with Cyclops shields preventing all damage, it sucks a ton of power and in the lava zone the lava larva suck out even more
