It was literally the first thing I built on the whole base, that Reactor room xD, pretty and functional. 1 multipurpose with 1 reactor and a plant in each corner (actually, only 6, there are 2 missing behind that I left without since it actually gave the room more character xD I only had 6 seeds at the time and I never did the last 2 corners because they became a doorway leading to the plantation and I kind of left it like that.
That room has literally kept me fed, healthy, filled my water and energized my base from the exact moment I picked the Habitat Builder, and it looks freaking pretty

Here's my base from the top. First level multiroom is where I keep the jukebox and some decorations(branches off to underwater scanner room and moonpool), second level is where I have my storage, fabrication, and charger. The 2 level large room is an aquarium with half of the top level being a greenhouse. The single large room on the left is my living area with a section branching off to my water filtration.

I was testing it and discovered what it is.
If you place the decoration with the lights on and turn the off, they will still be illuminated, but if you place them with the power off and turn it on, they will stay dark (I'd guess if you go far away enough from base and come back, it will update the decoration's lighting as well)
Personally, I love it and wish they would ALWAYS remain like that as a feature ❤️

even considered permanently leaving the power of the room only turned off like that (but it becomes weird during the day because light from the outside doesn't really come through the windows)

The large room and the control room really take it to the next level! But it's worth it for so much more. The design of the environments is just so outta there. And all the various critters that you can actually interact with - you haven't lived until you held a Pengling and it sneezed! Plus, the story. OMG the story.

a way to make it look okay is to make it the actual center of the base - it's really practical too, since everything is within reach of your main entry point which the moonpool naturally serves as.
Like, personal quarters on narrow side one (leaves room for observatories) and alien compartment stack plus scanner room on one wide side, storage and crafting plus reactor on the other. vehicle upgrade console on second narrow side.

@vagrant cove here's a design that would work for survival in any depth:
bottom 3 hold alien containment thingies, the one above has all of the plants and an awesome aquarium floor
no matter how many windows you want - just stick the reinforcements where they don't matter visually
the bottom one of the living unit is another alien containment tank, I like having my food fish/reactor fuel oculi separate. Creates another nice aquarium floor for your living room.
the two-stack has the reactor and the water filtration unit at the bottom and a crafting room on top, the singular one is mostly there for symmetry - but makes for a convenient storage space
compact, visually pleasing, and has everything you could want. You can, theoretically, add another moonpool behind the one that's there, but in my experience, one moonpool really is sufficient.
if you're a complete stickler for symmetry, you can also do this, I suppose. But it really feels like overkill 😄
adding growbeds to the moonpool roof makes for a nice garden that you can admire from your living quarters.
but while you can stick that kind of base p much anywhere, in my experience, bases look their best if you take cues from the environment and include the landscape in your design.

Some of them are a bit obvious (Though they don't work all the time. Some Lantern Fruits didn't light up when the lights were off in other plants.)

Not really, but kind of, yeah. I wish we had more freedom to place the partitions. Or at least a lot more snapping points and positions to place the door AND the ability to place bulkdoors as well.
I used it for bioreactors, water filtrators, huge alien containment, central connection to the rest of the base and stuff like that.
Like, a Large Room is really easy to build stuff out of if you make it the center piece of a base.

I can't be the only one that is seriously maddened by not being allowed to place Bulkheads between two rooms without a compartment in between in places like these black dividers that almost just shout "I'm a snap point!"
Or in doorways like this, which would make a LOT of sense, to place a door in a doorway...

Right side (from the bottom): 4 nuclear reactors, aquarium for power fish + bioreactors, more aquarium and storage, more aquarium and storage
Left side (from the bottom): aquarium for food fish, plant level, aquariums containing every fish that can be in them (I got bored), and lastly there's an area with cosmetics
And the moonpools are in the middle

the Aquarium is 4 stages high tons of space for tons of species
Hoping to always add more, but I fear we won't have as many species as with the frist game I guess
This is where I started years back kept adding more to it in Survival mode as the grame progressed updates were made and such, I aalways kept my own custom saved games, by making backups everytime a patch of BZ was released.
Inside is very colorful 🙂 found all the bed blankets as well afaik.

It let's you craft seeds to plant all the plants you can't in vanilla in growbeds. It let's you build rotatable picture frames that can be resized and turned into posters. It lets you craft office supplies and leviathan dolls and food trays and the other collectable items you could get in vanilla as well. It also lets you place items like wiring kits and power cells, eggs, minerals, chip bags from the vending machine, water bottles, and other stuff,

why do people make bases so big? my base is just 2 multipurpose rooms, a moonpoo...
because they are bored and want to build more
if you want functionality then what you have is all you really need
a scanner room is nice as well
but i have a large base with lots of alien containment, power sources, a lab, a break room, a cafateria, my bed room, 3 story storage, 2 moonpools, a plant room, a fabrication room with my food source.
theres some other things too
i also have a decoration mod so now im working on my base again
